LEADING ACADEMICS

AUTHENTICALLY CHRISTIAN

FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR

OUR HISTORY

N

ew Life Christian Academy began in the fall of 1992 when North Hills Christian School and Great Lakes Christian School merged. In the fall of 1993, the school moved to its current location at the corner of Wadhams and Griswold Roads in Kimball Township. Here, the school has continued to grow in academics, athletics, and ďŹ ne arts.

In 1994 NLCA joined both the Association of Christian Schools International and the Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools. These memberships provide enhancement and accountability to the academic excellence of NLCA. In 2005 NLCA was able to make needed improvements to both the playground and the hallways. The following years NLCA saw renovations to the parking lot and the creation of a regulation soccer field. These modifications continue to make NLCA a great place for your students. To continue to enhance its connection to academic innovations NLCA joined Christian Schools International in 2013. The school year 2016-2017 marks 25 years that NLCA has been providing academic excellence in an authentically Christian environment.

NLCA’S STATEMENT OF FAITH We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:1; John 10:30, 37, 38) We believe the Bible to be verbally inspired and the infallible, authoritative, inerrant Word of God. (II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:21) We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right-hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory. (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:35; Hebrews 4:15; Hebrews 7:25; John 2:11; Hebrews 9:12; Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14; John 11:25; Acts 1:11; Revelation 19:11-16) We believe that man is sinful by nature and that repentance, personal faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit are absolute necessities and the only way for his salvation. (Romans 3:23; John 3:16-19; John 5:24; John 14:6; Ephesians 2:18-19; Acts 4:12; Acts 21:21; Titus 3:5-6; Luke 18:9-14; Luke 13:3) We believe in the continuing ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life. (Ephesians 5:18; Ephesians 4:30; I Corinthians 3:16, 19, 20) We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost - those who are saved unto eternal life and those who are lost unto eternal damnation. (John 5:28-29) We believe in the spiritual unity of the believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 8:9; II Corinthians 12: 12,13) We believe in creation by the direct act of God. (Genesis 1:26-28, 5:1-2) We believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God. (Genesis 1:26-27) We believe in and follow the Biblical definition of marriage, which can occur only between a man and a woman. (Genesis 1:27-28, 2:18, 20, 23-24; Matthew 19:4-6; Ephesians 5:23-32)

MISSION: Seek to provide a Christcentered education and challenge each student to reach high academic, personal, and spiritual standards.

PHILOSOPHY: W e believe God has given parents the responsibility of

educating their children. New Life Christian Academy desires a partnership with parents to integrate Biblical principles and spiritual values into the educational process. We are committed to developing the whole person with challenging academics, social standards, personal spiritual development, physical well-being and emotional balance by teaching a Christian worldview based on the Truths of the Word of God.

These aspects of NLCA have been built into the school’s culture over the past 25 years and have become what makes the NLCA school experience unique.

Academic Commitment

NLCA provides a broad scope of academic courses including all of the following: Basic Grammar and Composion, Advanced Grammar and Composion, American Literature, Brish Literature, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-calculus, Stascs, Personal Finance, Accounng, Biology, Conceptual Physics, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, Psychology, Civics, Geography, Modern World History, US History, US Constuon, Economics, Spanish, Personal Character Study, Church History, Basic Theology, Apologecs, Praccal Chrisanity, Choir, Band, Art, and Speech. Teachers promote students using crical thinking and reasoning.

Authentically Christian

New Life Chrisan Academy encourages students to grow in their relaonship with Christ through academics and personal relaonships. Students are guided by a strong spiritual focus and given a firm Biblical foundaon. Students are loved, supported, encouraged, and strengthened by the staff at NLCA; by this they learn to live as Jesus would by caring for others.

Teachers Who Care

Teachers at NLCA focus on the personal needs of each student. They are passionate about their jobs and genuinely show that they care. Teachers endeavor to be Godly influences in and out of the classroom. Students oen describe them as a “loving family of staff.”

Leadership Skills

Students are given the opportunity to help lead the school through student council, chapel services, mock elecons, homecoming events, public performances, speech meet, and science fair. Due to the smaller size of classes, students have a greater chance to be leaders.

Wisdom

Students learn the value of invesng in others by the investment that the staff make in them daily through course work, extra-curricular acvies, and advise in mes of need. It is not only what NLCA students know, but it is how they use it that makes their knowledge special; that turns their knowledge into wisdom.

Practical Life Skills

NLCA believes that community service is a way for students to give back to the community as well as an opportunity for the student to build character. Community service starts in 6th grade or the first year a student enrolls at NLCA. Parent support is needed to help run the school and its programs effecvely and serves as an excellent example of love to your children. The Family Service Hour Program is designed to complement our staff and faculty at New Life Chrisan Academy.

Preparing for College

Graduates from NLCA have the opportunity of graduang with honors. This requires students to maintain a grade point average of 3.3 or beer, compleng 4 credits in fine arts, and a minimum of 8 credits in math at least through Algebra 2. Students who graduate as Valedictorian or Salutatorian must maintain a minimum 3.8 grade point average, aend NLCA full me their junior and senior year, and complete offered college prep courses.

Christ Has Pre-eminence

The staff at NLCA is commied to Christ and passionate about seeing their relaonship with Christ unfold in their daily lives. NLCA takes me to focus on making a relaonship and walk with Christ a priority by having a week long spiritual retreat, courses in Bible, and weekly chapel meengs.

Strong Principles and Values

The principles and values at NLCA are derived from the Bible. The Biblical and philosophical goal of New Life Chrisan Academy is to develop students into mature, Christ-like individuals who will be able to exhibit a Christ-like life. NLCA hopes to cooperate with the home in forming good habits in the student such as: cheerful obedience and respect for authority, responsibility, courtesy and respect for others and their property, cooperaon with others, cleanliness in person and property, truthfulness and honesty in work and life, promptness, and morally good conduct.

AROUND AROUND THE THE WORLD WORLD

New Life Christian Academy has had international students on three continents; four countries including Canada, Brazil, South Korea and China. This is made possible as NLCA is registered with the Student and Exchange Visitor Interaction System (SEVIS).

BEYOND OUR COMMUNITY

Christopher Gearhart 1994 I just turned 40 years old – as I look back at my life, I really appreciate the time I was able to attend NLCA. I feel that my spiritual foundation was strengthened during my time at the school. I grew up as a “P.K.” (pastor’s kid) so I was regularly in church and youth group, but having the privilege of attending a Christian school helped me stay on track through my later teenage years. I worked at a church for 10 years in media production before I started my company, Eighth Day Media, in 2005. I am so thankful for everything God has done for me and my family, and the Divine favor He continues to give me and my business! My wife Andrea and I have three children, and I’m proud to say that they all attend NLCA and LOVE being there! We are so blessed to be part of the NLCA family! We would highly recommend NLCA for anyone seeking Christ-centered education. Josh Hossler 1997 I am currently the Founding/Lead Pastor of Evident Church in Chesterfield, MI, and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at Rochester College in Rochester, MI. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Ministry and Masters of Arts in Theology from Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN (2002 & 2006). NLCA was a great learning environment for me because it gave me a very strong relational connection to the teachers and staff. They personally invested in me and my education and that made a huge difference. Along with that, the strong spiritual focus helped guide the trajectory of my life. No matter what field God would have called me into, I know my faith would have remained strong and I would have remained on mission for Him. I am extremely proud and grateful for my NLCA education.

Aaron Achatz 1998 My current profession is a Registered Nurse, highest level of education completed Associates Degree in Nursing. Graduating from NLCA helped to solidify faith in Christ. Looking back it provided an atmosphere that allowed me to grow as a Christian and created healthy spiritual habits that I would not have received in a public school setting. It is a safe, family oriented environment that provides a great education. It was never a question over where my own children would go to school, and I have been proud to see my daughter become a New Life Knight.

Saundra Brown 1995 I have been teaching at NLCA for 17 years having graduated from Spring Arbor University with my Bachelor of Arts degree. I’ve been married to a wonderful man named Don Brown for 11 years. I’ve benefited by graduating from New Life in that I had an excellent foundation to build upon. I’d recommend NLCA for their hearts for the children and commitment to God centred education. Stephanie Kimmerly 2000 I am currently the Academic Dean of an elementary school within Elkhart Community Schools in Elkhart, Indiana. I earned my bachelors in Elementary Education from Bethel College and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership & Administration from Ball State University. The impact New Life Christian Academy had on my education is profoundly evident in my everyday life. Attending NLCA prepared me for a career in which I am committed to positively influencing the lives of others. New Life’s education helped develop significant qualities such as integrity, courage, passion, and focus which have been crucial in my leadership role in education. Not only did attending New Life impact my education and future career, but my heart and spirituality as well. I will never forget the incredible memories such as: Spiritual Emphasis Week, Winter Retreat, and who can forget the far-out activities of the student council’s Spirit Week? All of my experiences at NLCA were filled with praise, personal growth, and fellowship. The teachers and administrators taught me what the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ is all about. As an adult, I can clearly see that my experience of, “striving for excellence” at NLCA enabled me to grow into a lifelong learner, teacher, leader, and Christian. I would not trade that experience for anything!

Coty LaVere 2004 I'm currently the Director of Field Operations for a company by the name of Advantage Solutions. We are a third party marketing agency who oversees the in-store demonstration program for Meijer. I am a 2008 graduate of GVSU with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration (B.B.A.) with an emphasis in Management and Marketing. Twelve out of my thirteen grade school years were spent at NLCA. It was an incredible journey and opportunity to be a part of a school who valued knowing Christ above all else. Having a Christian foundation built into every class was indispensable in developing my Christian faith. This truly prepared and equipped me for the real world as I entered my freshman year of college at GVSU. I loved having smaller classroom sizes where you developed deeper relationships with your peers. Some of my closest friends to date are ones I met during my time with NLCA. The teachers were also phenomenal. They were passionate about what they did and genuinely showed they truly cared about their students. Spencer Bing 2005 In my current role, I am both the Director of Support and the General Manager for a startup in the esports industry, called Proguides. We have built a video library (similar to Netflix), and our users subscribe in order to improve at a video game called League of Legends. We work exclusively with professional players, and I have been lucky enough to be part of the team since its inception in early 2015. NLCA was a safe environment in which to learn and grow as a student and a Christian. I definitely recommend students to take advantage of the many extracurricular opportunities NLCA offers. Whether athletics, drama, or something else, your time at NLCA is a great chance to dive into things you are passionate about.

Ben Wickman 2004 After graduating from NLCA, I went on to receive my Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Grand Valley State University and I am currently a physical therapist at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids. Going to New Life helped me gain a biblical foundation and equipped me with the knowledge and skills to succeed at a public university. My close-knit community of classmates at NLCA has given me lifelong friendships that I will cherish forever. I would recommend NLCA to anyone who is seeking a solid education, a firm understanding of the Bible, and an authentic community.

David and Elizabeth A. Ozzello 2005 David and I both graduated from NLCA in 2005. We recently celebrated our ninth wedding anniversary! I graduated from Lawrence Technological University with a Master of Science in Architectural Engineering and I am a structural engineer at SmithGroupJJR. David is a foreman at J&P Electrical and has worked there for seven years. David and I both enjoyed the sports program while we attended NLCA and, academically, we were both well prepared for college and our professions. The small classes allowed us to receive more individualized attention from our teachers, increased our ability to participate in extracurriculars, and led to lifelong friendships with many of our classmates.

Kate Harrington 2006 I have a bachelor’s degree in social work from Indiana Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in social work from Wayne State University. I was a medical social worker at McLaren Port Huron for five years, but recently moved to Czech Republic to pursue long-term missions. I currently teach English. NLCA not only provided a solid education, but also developed my walk with Christ. I believe that the faculty and staff at NLCA work with a passion for students and Christ that makes such a difference in the education. I can't say enough good things about my experience and would recommend it to anyone.

Adrianne Reynolds 2008 I attended New Life for my 5th-12th grade years. I later attended and graduated from Maranatha Baptist University with my Bachelors in Liberal Arts and currently serve as faculty, athletic director, and media manager at NLCA. The education I received at New Life not only prepared me academically for college, but also socially and spiritually. I would recommend the family atmosphere and Christ-centered teaching to anyone looking to educate and raise their child on a solid foundation of truth. Kathryn Wickman 2008 I have a Masters of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and I am currently working as a therapist in an inner-city elementary school in Denver, Colorado, as well as doing individual and couples counseling in a private practice. Working in a public school has helped me to realize how fortunate I was to attend New Life, with teachers and staff who care deeply about their student’s academic and social/emotional needs and whose small class sizes made it impossible for anyone to be unseen or discounted because of their needs. It’s the personal investment the staff had for me to succeed that is why I would recommend New Life to others.

Chelsie (Bennett) Squires 2005 I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature. I was privileged to teach junior high English at NLCA from 2013-2014. In 2014, I married the magnificent Brendan Squires. I've returned to college for my state certification to teach secondary level History, as well as English. While I'm in school, I've been working as a full-time nanny, caring for two beautiful little boys. NLCA was a second home for me—maybe even my first home, since my Mom was the 5th grade teacher and cheerleading coach, while my Dad coached girls' basketball and soccer. It felt like I was always in that building! Even after Mom passed away, NLCA continued to be a home and a family for me and my siblings. We were loved, supported, encouraged, and strengthened. I will always cherish the relationships that began there, with both classmates and teachers, which continue today. I was surrounded by Godly influences, both in and out of the classroom; and that is exactly the environment that I want my future children to have. Lorena (Nowakowski) Mendez 2006 My name is Lorena (Nowakowski) Mendez, and I am a proud graduate of NLCA. The value of benefit I received from the dedicated teachers and staff at New Life is immeasurable, and I cannot thank them enough for the academic and spiritual impact they have had on my life. New Life gave me the preparation to continue on to earn bachelor degrees in Education and Foreign Language, and equally if not more important, a spiritual foundation for an unwavering faith in God. Along with teaching Spanish the past 3 years, my husband and I have answered a call to cross-cultural Missions, and have recently returned from Nicaragua where we worked with the National Wesleyan Church for 6 months in church planting and community development. The teachers, administrators, staff and fellow alumni who make up NLCA have had and continue to have a significant positive influence in my life, and that has continued to be a blessing and benefit beyond compare. P.S. I can't exclude my parents and their part in all this: Mom and Dad, I know you'll read this at some point so THANK YOU for the commitment and investment you made in sending me to NLCA!

Heidi Harrington Sampson 2008 BA in biology/public health from Houghton College. Currently a Foster Care Family Specialist in SC. I learned to love science through my education at NLCA. My teachers let me see how important, and interesting the sciences are! Having my teachers also become my coworkers for a few years was such a neat experience. I could see the hard work and dedication from teachers as a student, but to be a part of the team alongside them was an honor. The small setting was one of my favorite parts at NLCA. Being able to build relationships that have lasted a lifetime with not only students, but teachers and staff. At NLCA kids are able to experience an education in a Biblical, supportive atmosphere that is hard to find elsewhere. It's more than learning, it's joining a family and becoming an active part of your child's education and support system. Eric Williams 2009 My name is Eric Williams. I graduated from NLCA in 2009, married a fellow classmate in 2012, and we currently have a two-yearold son and another on the way. I am an HVAC Technician working for my family's business and serving as the worship leader for Woodside Bible Church - Algonac on a volunteer basis. My time at NLCA prepared me to be the husband, father and leader that I am today and strive to be in the future. I am so grateful for my time at New Life and hope many more people have the opportunity to learn from the motivated, loving family of staff. I often recommend NLCA to people for the focus on Christ, love and compassion that drives its mission of educating godly leaders. Brittini Whetstone 2010 I'm now a second grade teacher. I felt that a great benefit from graduating from NLCA was being prepared for my college classes. If you are looking for a small, tight knit community, New Life is for you. I often tells others, the small class sizes and environment was a great fit for me!

Brittany Tester (née Bennett) 2007 In 2011, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the US Air Force Academy and was commissioned as an officer in the US Air Force. Currently, I am a Project Manager on a new $2.5 billion radar defense program, stationed at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts. For me, especially going into the military, where you’re surrounded by people who have such vastly different upbringings and value systems, a firm foundation of who you are and what you believe is invaluable. While I think a lot of teenagers feel lost and helpless during those transitional high school years, NLCA was really a firm foothold for me during a difficult time in my life. It helped cement those values that my parents instilled in me at a young age, which, consequently, has affected my actions in both the workplace and how I live my life on a daily basis. Because it’s a small school, NLCA has the opportunity to give kids, who maybe otherwise wouldn’t have a voice,a chance to really grow as an individual and take on their own leadership roles. This could be in athletics, in speech meet, in academics, in drama, etc. But these unique opportunities can help kids, at a young age, figure out what they’re being called to do when they grow up, and, more importantly, how the Lord can use them.

Allison Simmons 2011 After graduating from New Life in 2011, I attended Hope College in Holland, MI where I received a BA in Musical Theatre. Post college graduation, I spent a year acting with different theatres across Michigan. I now live in Atlanta, GA where I am still working as an actor. It was at NLCA that I found my passion. It began with the first music classes I ever had - elementary school music with Mrs. Lane. That passion for music grew and manifested in different ways once I discovered theatre. I was in a production of “Beauty and the Beast” my sophomore year. Mr. Smith (our director) and that production showed me how music, acting, and dance can come together to create art - and I suddenly knew what I wanted to do with my life. At NLCA, you will become a part of a small but tight-knit community. You will know everyone, and everyone will probably know you. This is a foreign concept to people who attend large public schools. At New Life, you will have a chance to become a part of something that can truly feel like a family - a family that will teach you about the Christian faith while supporting your dreams. Michael Williams 2011 I graduated from New Life in 2011 and went on to get my bachelor's degree in political science at Oakland University, and I now am working on staff with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, a ministry to college students, at OU and Oakland Community College. The life I now live is centered on the priorities instilled in me by attending and graduating from NLCA: God, family, and helping others. New Life's focus on the importance of serving and worshiping God and doing one's best is commendable and appreciated, and has greatly impacted my life for the better.

Kelly Aschauer 2010 I am currently in the advanced standing master’s program for Social Work at Kent School (University of Louisville). I work as a youth counselor at a residential treatment facility for the most traumatized teenage girls in the state of Kentucky (Maryhurst, Inc.). At New Life I was not only academically prepared for my college career, but also prepared for the spiritual trials that came along with transitioning to that new chapter of my life. While my parents were foundational for my spiritual growth and teaching me to make wise decisions, New Life staff aided in instilling the importance of reaching out for help and developing a strong community in the school setting. The New Life experience is unique and intimate. Teachers go above and beyond to help foster learning and forming positive relationships with their students. Students are encouraged by staff to go deeper in their relationship with Christ and to show Christ's love to each other. The relationships that were formed at New Life are still some of the most precious to me.

Molly Harringotn 2011 I am the Executive Assistant/Scheduler for Congressman Paul Mitchell- Michigan’s 10th Congressional District. Graduating from NLCA has benefited me in many ways, but I think the one that sticks out the most is the constant conversation of living out our faith in the world around us. Mrs. Mills Apologetics class taught us how to defend our faith, but she also instilled in us the importance of being the light wherever we are. Recommending NLCA to others is not difficult for me. New Life has been a part of my family for my entire life. The teachers were not just my teachers. They have become my mentors, greatest cheerleaders, support and most of all my family. The education that students receive is outstanding, but I think that the lifelong relationships and family that are started through New Life is almost just as important.

Josiah Weber 2011 My names Josiah Weber. I graduated from New Life in 2011. I graduated from Spring Arbor University in May 2015 with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Biology and Health Science. I currently work as a medical scribe but I will begin Western Michigan University's Physician Assistant program in September 2017. I think NLCA did a phenomenal job preparing me for my college studies. I was shown how to study many different subjects but always use the gospel as a lens through which I could really study the world. I also really appreciated the community they strive to have in the school among students and even teachers. If anyone is looking for a truly Christ centered education, I would highly recommend NLCA. Cabri Aldis 2016 I am currently in my first year at Macomb Community College, pursuing a career in nursing. I would like to specialize in surgical or forensic nursing. I have greatly benefitted from attending New Life because of the quality of education that I received which definitely prepared me for college. I would recommend NLCA because of the excellent education and the atmosphere of the school. The teachers are involved in your education and your faith; it really is like a family at New Life. Rebekkah Jones 2016 I am currently a freshman in college working towards my master’s degree in nursing in hopes of becoming a neonatal nurse! I benefitted in many ways because I attended and graduated from New Life. These benefits include a better education because of smaller class sizes, Christian curriculum, and Christian teachers who are genuinely concerned with my success. Another benefit is that my faith is a lot stronger because of the encouragement and accountability of Christian teachers, friends, and parents. I would definitely recommend NLCA to anyone who wants to have a personal relationship with the Lord! I loved New Life because of how everyone genuinely cared about not just my education, but my character, faith, and relationship with God!

Luke Janiszewski 2015 I have currently completed my associates in general business from SC4, and am now pursuing a bachelor’s in business administration with minor in Advertising and Public Relations from Grand Valley State University. NLCA gave me a foundation of faith that I plan on building upon for the rest of my life. New Life was a great experience, I made so many friends and was able to be involved with so many activities, it has shaped my life. Maggie Kimmerly 2016 I am currently in my first year of college, where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. While in college, I also work retail (gotta pay for college). One thing I appreciated about NLCA was the level of consistency found there. We knew that an encouraging and loving environment awaited us every day when we walked through the doors. I would recommend New Life to others because it invests into each student individually. Since the school is not huge, it is definitely quality over quantity.

THE FUTURE OF NLCA New Life Christian academy has seen much growth over the past 25 years. The next 25 years will continue this growing process, with God all things are possible!
