he dilemma with wellness retreats is that many operate on a formula aimed at the average punter. It can make you feel less than special when you are paying all that money – and being asked to set the alarm at dawn. Only once before have I ever been encouraged to make my wellness experience a family affair. At The Cassowary Rainforest Retreat in Port Douglas, I was encouraged to not only bring along my eightyear-old daughter, but also my best friend and her daughter too. And we didn’t have to get up at an ungodly hour. I know what you’re thinking: a wellness retreat with children

43 sounds like an oxymoron. But owner Sam Kozak encourages guests to reflect on their lifestyles. “Parents are constantly challenged with getting kids off the iPads and phones. Imagine a retreat where your kids come away enjoying exercising and eating vegetables,” Sam says. I like the concept, and it means I can focus on my own health for five whole days, minus the guilt of being away from my family.
