OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

BACKHOE OPERATION (If Equipped)

WARNING: Before you operate the backhoe in an area where your visibility is reduced, such as next to a building, etc., always install a guard rail and warning signs to keep other persons away from your machine.

SA062

WARNING: Before operating the backhoe, always be in the operators seat. Serious injury or death can result if you do not follow these instructions. SA126

WARNING: A working backhoe can injure or kill. Before you start, always make sure that all persons are away from the DANGER AREA. SA061

General

Be a careful operator; you can prevent accidents. Read the following information and the Safety section of this manual. The backhoe will dig more material in less time when a smooth, short dig cycle is used. A good operator is not just a fast operator. Keep each dig cycle smooth. IMPORTANT: Before you operate the backhoe for the first time, move the machine to an open area. Run the engine at 1/3 throttle. Actuate each backhoe control lever until each movement is smooth.

It is recommended that you run the engine at no greater than 1/2 throttle when you operate the backhoe. If you are a new operator, move the machine to an open area and operate the backhoe at a reduced engine speed. You must know the operating speed of this backhoe before you operate in an area with other persons.

Hydraulic Power

See Hydraulic Power for the Backhoe, page 71 and set the foot pedal or hand lever for continuous hydraulic power.

Digging with the Backhoe

WARNING: Always know the location of all workers in your area. Warn them before you start working the machine. Always keep all other persons away from your area. Serious injury or death can result if you do not follow these instructions. SA015

Filling the Bucket

Fill the bucket by operating the boom, dipper, and bucket as necessary to keep the bucket parallel with the cut. Let the bucket teeth and cutting edge cut through the ground like a knife blade. The type of material that you dig determines the depth of the cut.

Bucket Position Correct Trenching Cycle Method

CORRECT

WRONG

Bucket will dig-in and cause a stall.

WRONG

Bucket is pushed up. This will also slow the cycle time.

BS99C010

IMPORTANT: Do not backfill a trench with the backhoe by swinging the bucket against the soil.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING: Before you start to work in a new area, walk around and look for holes or obstructions. Failure to find hidden holes or obstructions can cause an accident and injury. SA019

Procedure to Move the Machine When You Dig

Make sure that you check the area for obstructions, holes, etc., before you move the machine. Your visibility to the rear is reduced when you are digging with the backhoe.

When you move the machine, raise the boom and retract the dipper. Raise the stabilizers. Move to the machine operators seat, fasten the seat belt, and pull the seat bar down. Carefully move the machine away from the hole you are digging.

Do not try to move the machine using the backhoe.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Lifting with the Backhoe

It is important to remember that lifting operations with the backhoe attachment are subject to strict legislation. Your machine must be fitted with the following statutory safety equipment: 1.Approved load fitting ring. 2.Boom lowering speed control device. (ISO 8643) 3.Audible or visible alarm device to warm the operator of loads in excess of those authorised. 4.Special load lifting chart. See your CASE dealer.

IMPORTANT: IMPORTANT: Read the backhoe manufacturers instructions, before doing any lifting operations. The backhoe is NOT a crane. For this reason, always be very careful when you lift a load with the backhoe. Read the precautions that follow before you begin. 1.Know and understand each signal from the signalman before you begin. 2.Always know the location of all persons in your working area. 3.Attach a hand line to the load before you start. Make sure the person holding the hand line is away from the load. 4.Test the load before you begin your job: A.Move the machine close to the load. B.Use a cable or sling to fasten the load to the end of the dipper at the bucket pivot pin.

C.Lift the load with the backhoe so the load is one or two inches (25 to 50 mm) above the ground.

D.Swing the load all the way to one side.

E.Move the load away from the machine. Make sure you keep the load one or two inches (25 to 50 mm) above the ground.

F.Lower the load to the ground if (1) one of the stabilizers is raised above the ground or (2) there is any other indication that the stability of the machine is reduced. 5.Always move the load slowly. Do not move the load over persons. 6.When the load is raised, keep all persons away until the load is lowered fully on the ground. 7.Remember, lower the load to the ground if (1) one of the stabilizers is raised above the ground or (2) there is any other indication that the stability of the machine is reduced.
