Two Council meetings wil be held in smaller communities and monthly informal ‘meet and greets’ planned right throughout the region this year. Mayor George Seymour said Council was keen to ensure all of the region’s 100,000 plus residents got access to their elected representatives and the support they needed. The list of Council meetings dates is available on the Council website at www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/ council-meetings. All Council meetings are also livestreamed on Council’s YouTube channel.

Learn how to help an injured turtle or take a spectacular cruise around the Great Sandy Strait as part of February’s celebrations for World Wetlands Day on the Fraser Coast “The incredible Great Sandy Strait is one of five Ramsar Wetlands in Queensland which has an international importance,” said Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour. “To celebrate 50 years of Ramsar and remind ourselves of the many reasons our Great Sandy Strait Ramsar Wetland is so precious,
Council has partnered with Qld Wetlands Program, Burnett Mary Regional Group and local conservation groups to organise a range of activities for the community to participate in.” Activities include ‘Find a Frog’ excursions where residents can help photograph or record calls of frogs they encounter; guided walks to learn about mangrove species, a turtle workshop in Poona and a Great Sandy Strait Boat Cruise. The celebration will also include a month-long photography competition with three double passes to go whale watching up for grabs. To get involved with any of the activities, check the Council’s website for more details and RSVP quickly as numbers are limited.

The Fraser Coast Sports Awards Council hosts, acknowledge and celebrate the efforts of regional sporting groups, their volunteers, players, officials, and coaches. “If you know someone who has done a great job, either as a player, volunteer, coach or on the organising committee, please take the time to nominate them,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said. “Sport is an important part of life. It is not just the competition; the action on the field or the court; sport also includes the behind the scenes action - the training, the
organising, the volunteers. Award Categories • Sports Person of the Year (male); • Sports Person of the Year (female); • Junior Sports Person of the Year (under 14); • Sports Masters of the Year (40 years plus); • All Abilities Sports Award; • Team of the Year; • Event of the Year; • Coach of the Year, and; • Club Person of the Year. Nominations can be lodged online though the Fraser Coast Sports Awards page on the Council website www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/frasercoast-sports-awards Nominations close on March 7 and the awards ceremony will be held at the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough at 12pm on March 28.
Green Thumbs get ready
After nearly a year, the Hervey Bay Garden Club is resuming monthly meetings on Thursday 11 February at the Community Centre in Charles St, Pialba. Come along for a 9am start. Members are invited to bring in a special plant, or one they need to have identified, and they can be the guest speakers for February. There will be a Bring and Buy table, Plant of the Month Competition and raffle. Bring your own morning tea.
