FAQs

Q: A:

What are Harmolan yarns?

Harmolan is the brand name for the polypropylene and olefin fibres used to create Viva Life products. This brand name is used only when this special process is followed. Harmolan is a sustainable material with a low carbon footprint and strong performance. It boasts the lowest thermal conductivity of all natural and synthetic fibres, which means that it regulates temperature exceptionally well, ensuring that Harmolan fabrics feel comfortable at all times.

Q: A:

Viva Life fabrics are “upcycled” – what does this mean?

The polypropylene used to produce Viva Life yarns is made out of waste from the oil industry. When crude oil is refined, gases are released that would usually dissolve into the air. In this case, gases are captured and “cracked” into a powder, which is used to produce granules. The granules are then melted, coloured pigments are added and these are extruded to form yarns. This process happens at a low temperature and no water is added to the solution.

Q: A:

In what way is the production of Viva Life water-wise?

The dyeing process – which usually requires a large amount of water – is skipped as coloured pigments are added to the granules to create the spinning solution. As such, about 5 000 litres of water for every 1 000 metres of yarn produced is saved. That is the equivalent of the amount of water produced if a tap is left running for 14 hours non-stop.

Q: A:

What is the best way to clean Viva Life fabrics? Because no additional chemicals are used to make Viva Life dirt repellent, the fabric is inherently cleanable.

FAQs

What are the advantages of Viva Life fabrics?

1. Viva Life is stain resistant. Harmolan, the special fibres used to create Viva Life products, is inherently resistant to stains, chemicals, mould and bacteria. No additional chemicals are used to make the fabric cleanable; it is inherently cleanable and is washable.

2. Viva Life is durable. Harmolan is the most durable synthetic fibre available, making Viva Life fabrics exceptionally strong and durable. They exceed all industry standards for abrasion, pilling and colourfastness, feature 100 000 Martindale rubs and exceed 5 on the Blue Scale, a measure of lightfastness.

3. Viva Life is upcycled. Viva Life is produced from upcycled waste material and is 100% recyclable. It can be recycled up to 10 times and has an average life cycle of 100 years.

4. Viva Life is water-wise and energy efficient. Viva Life fabrics are made entirely without water, during production and dyeing. Other synthetic fibres require an average of 85 000 litres of water per 10 000 metres of fabric produced. (That’s one shower a day for six and a half years.) Viva Life products are produced at a lower temperature, requiring less energy than usually required to produce synthetic fibre.

5. Viva Life is chemical free. Viva Life products are free of potentially harmful PFC chemicals.
