22nd Anniversary Banquet Keynote Speaker Announced San Antonio, TX - August 30, 2012 The National Executive Board of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. (SIA) announces Carmen M. Ortiz as the keynote speaker for their upcoming 22nd Founders’ Anniversary Banquet. Nominated by President Barack Obama, as the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, Ms. Ortiz was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in November 2009. SIA National President, Cristina Luna commented, “As the first Hispanic woman to represent Massachusetts as the United States Attorney she is a prime example of a Latina leading the way and an inspiration to our members. We are very excited to have Ms. Ortiz join us in our celebration as we honor the foundation of our organization and the values set forth by our Founders.” Ms. Ortiz is a graduate of Adelphi University (B.B.A.) and George Washington University Law School (J.D.). She has received numerous awards and recognitions including Latina of the Year, El Mundo Newspaper (2012); Bostonian of the Year,
The Boston Globe (2012); Las Primeras Award for Exemplary Achievement, Mass. Association of Hispanic Attorneys (2011); El Planeta Newspaper, 100 Most Influential People for the Hispanic Community of Mass., (2011); Mass. Women’s Bar Association, Pioneering Women of Color Award (2010) to name a few. Ms. Ortiz will be introduced by SIA’s Honorary Member, Mrs. Lynda Perdomo-Ayala, who is a longtime friend and colleague. (SIA): SIA was founded in New York on September 29, 1990 by thirteen Latina women with the purpose of creating an organization that would help their communities, unite women, promote the Latino culture and uphold a set of distinct goals.
