Herlufsholm clothing
Herlufsholm clothing SCHOOL - SPORTS - LEISURE TIME The use of uniforms at Herlufsholm dates back to the 1800s, and the idea has proven durable and expedient for pedagogical as well as practical reasons. The shared guidelines create a visible expression of community and shared values and most importantly an equal foundation for the development of individual abilities and character. The guidelines provide a clear framework for the students’ clothing with the possibility of different combinations and variations. The overall feature of the clothing is a classic cut and the colors dark blue and medium or dark grey in combination with the light blue Herlovian shirt with the Gøye coat of arms. The school clothing has to be comfortable, and we therefore strive for a balance between practicality and quality. It can seem overwhelming to have to purchase new clothing for a school life at Herlufsholm. Right from the start of the school year, the students need to have the clothing necessary for day-to-day life, but it might be a good idea to see if it is not possible to use a great deal of the clothing the student already owns. It is always possible to buy supplemental clothes during the school year. Seasonal clothing can also be purchased as needed. The school’s supplier of clothing is Mister in Næstved. Mister is in charge of the custom manufacture of parts of the school uniform, including blazers and ties, shirts and sportswear with the school logo. These clothing items can be combined in a basic package or bought individually at Mister. Other parts of the uniform can also be bought at Mister, but the parents and students are free to shop elsewhere as long as the style and colors are in accordance with the Herlufsholm clothing’s standard and classic look.
It is important that all clothing brought to the school be labeled with the student’s name. Name labels can be ordered from Mister which sews name tags in all clothes bought at the store. 1

Overview and supplemental clothing The students need the necessary number of shirts, socks, underwear, etc., to get through day-to-day life with clean and proper clothing. It is therefore important to take stock of the number of various clothing items not only before school start but also at the end of the school year in order to establish what supplemental clothing is needed for the next school year. The students usually take home their clothes for the summer vacation while other possessions to a certain extent can be left at the school. It is possible to buy and sell gently used school clothing through the school’s Linnedstue. Parents who are interested in selling used clothes or wish to hear about the selection are asked to contact the Linnedstue at: linnedstue@herlufsholm.dk or call +45 55 75 35 83 (Tuesday-Thursday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm). It is also possible to set up an appointment, if so desired. On Facebook you can find the group “Køb/salg Herlufsholm skoletøj” where parents are able to get information and contact each other if they want to buy or sell used school clothes.

Personal appearance It is of course expected that the students are careful with their clothing and appearance. During school hours as well as during leisure hours, the clothes must be clean and whole with ironed shirts, nice pants and polished shoes. The clothing must fit well, and the hair must be neat and in natural colors - and cut at regular intervals. Tattoos must not be visible, and piercings and other personal experimental expressions are not allowed. At-school weekend On Saturday after school hours and on Sunday, the students may vary the school attire with the different options in leisure wear. However, all students must wear Herlovian shirts at the breakfast and dinner table. Travel weekend When traveling from the school, the students must wear the regular school uniform/leisure wear. If the students return to the school in other clothes, they must change into the school uniform/school leisure wear immediately upon their return. Field trips During field trips, study trips, theater visits and other events, the students must wear regular school/sports/ leisure wear or half gala, as agreed with the teacher. Test period, writing days and exams As a general rule, the school attire is used during reading and study time before noon. Supplemental leisure wear attire may be used after the lunch buffet unless the students have tests or exams. The rule for the middle school students is that they wear half gala at oral exams. Laundering of clothes and bundle The school Linnedstue offers laundering of all parts of the school clothes. The students hand in their bundle with dirty clothes to the Linnedstue on Thursday morning before the breakfast table and pick up their bundle with clean clothes on Thursday morning after breakfast. All dormitories have washing machines and dryers where the students can wash additional clothing items, for example athletics wear. The students use the washing machine and dryer according to the instructions of the dormitory and at their own risk. Dry cleaning Certain items of the Herlufsholm school uniform cannot be washed but need to be dry-cleaned as necessary. The Linnedstue will arrange delivery and retrieval of clothes to be cleaned at a local dry cleaner. The clothes to be cleaned are handed in to the Linnedstue on Tuesday before a travel weekend and can be picked up on Friday before a travel weekend. The dry-cleaning expenses will be charged each quarter to the student’s school account. 8
