South west corner of main house. All of the roofline woodwork was missing, the arrow shows the only remaining fragment on this elevation, paint to this area was original. Samples were taken for historical documentation and colour scheme guidance. Positioning of the brackets were clearly visible due to the wall having been painted before the brackets and frieze were removed in the past. Site location of new addition prior to excavation.

South East Corner There are many areas of evidence showing the “shifting” of the building , the aluminum storm window shown here has popped out due to the pressure of the shifting structure bearing on the window assembly.

This window and the one below it were approximately 1 1/4” out of square and both boxed sash windows were removed then taken apart ,restored and reassembled square. Working in conjunction with the heritage masonry company the windows were reinstalled in the original positions but now plump and square.

Installation of the soffit Notice the gaps that we deliberately placed between the soffit (and frieze) boards. This was done to match the existing conditions found on the soffit and frieze on the north and east elevations. The original boards would have been air dried and as such they would have continued to dry out once installed on the building. This resulted in the often wide gaps found between the boards. The new replica boards being kiln dried and primed all around are much less disposed to shrinkage to the same degree and therefore create this size of gap. Hence we artificially moved them apart to give the same historic appearance as the original heritage fabric.

Dutchmen Repair using old growth pine Original note to the carpenters/joiners. This piece of history was found when we took apart one of the bracket assemblies.Note how the 18 is overwritten onto the original 16. In fact 16 was the correct amount required for the building addition. However normal trade practice was/is generally to provide an allowance for breakages.

New moulding blocks for brackets made out of Douglas fir as this area is the “Achilles heal” in the design. Snow can build up on the top edge and sit here creating potential moisture issues, modern eastern white pine is not robust enough to withstand this exceptional condition. The Douglas fir matches the characteristics of the first growth pine in its density and is therefore a better solution in this situation.
