Live Auction LOT 8: JOHN BOYD-DUNLOP CRICKET, BOYS! Watercolour on canvas

HEREWORTH GALA 2018 9

The day John Boyd-Dunlop picked up a watercolour pencil just over two years ago at the age of 68 his new career was cemented and his life of stress was converted into these wonderfully quirky and yes - childlike, but humorously clever observations of the more interesting and happy times in his life. The difference between these works of art and a child's is that these drawings have not been produced by a child at all. A six year old child could perhaps have drawn one of these images but would have stopped there, limited by his brief experience of life but eager to learn more about the future. The pensioner who after a lifetime of cut-throat business stress and a roller coaster ride through life is sitting back reflectively and reverting back to those childhood years of innocence. These few works are a miniscule example of John's output that is spewing off his drawing pad every day in a passionate effort to celebrate a hard but wonderful life where all the negatives have been filtered out only leaving the humour, innocence and happiness seen through the eyes of an older man seeking that long gone spirit of a six year old. John was a pupil of Lindisfarne College in the early 60s and spent many happy times playing cricket against Hereworth on its cricket pitch.

LOT 9: LOUISE STOBART SOUTH ISLAND ROBIN Acrylic on canvas 25cm x 25cm

10

Louise Stobart, owner and founder of Havelock North’s Birdwoods Gallery, has created this charming and playful work, especially for the Hereworth Gala. As a sculptor with an international following, Louise is more accustomed to working with large pieces of metal than with acrylics. However, following the success of her paintings at previous Hereworth Art Auctions, she was convinced to pick up her paintbrushes yet again. Louise and her husband Bruce opened Birdwoods in 2005, and it has become a ‘must see’ destination for locals and visitors, offering a gallery, sculpture garden, café and old fashioned sweet shop. The name originates from Zimbabwe, where Louise established Birdwoods Metal Sculpture in 1991, using her designs to create a wide range of unique metal sculptures made from recycled 40 gallon oil drums. In the 20+ years since she designed and welded her first prototype, Louise’s sculptures have gained an international reputation, with notable exhibitions including the Chelsea Flower Show in London and Keukenhof Tulip Gardens in Amsterdam. 1200 BOTTLES MADE Hot tar, liquorice, blackest cherry and cracked pepper are all characters that spring to mind when spending some time with a large glass of this. We don’t think there is another Syrah out there like this. EASTHOPE FAMILY WINEGROWERS 2014 MOTEO, HAWKE'S BAY MERLOT 900 BOTTLES MADE Aromas of plum, star anise and violets come to mind, but also a hint of soy, charcoal and trace vanilla. The palate is where this wine's more individual traits show; the uncommon inclusion of whole bunches in the fermentation lend this wine another dimension of textural interest, which tames the abundant fruit flesh.  You really need a large glass and some time to get to know this wine…
