HISTORY

Outside view or Cover4: Label placed on the outside of the upper lid of the box or chest. It is the element that gives the most information to the consumer: name of the factory and manufacturer, brand, awards obtained, type of size (vitola), manufacturer’s address, etc. In addition, the printing was of the finest quality, generally with a profusion of gilt and beautifully designed.

usually similar to tapaclavos (nail concealers), although these tend to be smaller with the larger axis placed horizontally. At last, on August 21, 1884 there was another Royal Decree repealing all prior laws, allowing manufacturers to protect their products with registered trademarks under their names, for a certain number of years, with the possibility of renewal after a certain period. Inside view or simply, Vista: Label placed on the inside of the upper lid of the chest. It barely provides information to the consumer since its main function is to embellish the interior of the chest. It is similar to the exterior view of the box.

We must warn the reader that, from this point forward, we shall refer to the set of pieces currently in use, since with time this set has changed and some elements once used have disappeared, as the so called “name papeleta” or “the second password” (la segunda contraseña).

Bofetón or bocetón: Label affixed on a side of the chest while the remainder rests on the cigars. The printing is modest, no reliefs nor gilt; it also does not provide information to the consumer since its role is to protect the product and avoid or diminish the loss of aroma and taste. Label placed on the side panel of the chest, on top or bottom of lid or back, for the purpose of acting as a seal or closure. Its format is, generally, small and of the same design and quality as the vistas. It affords the consumer with a great deal of information on the manufacturer and the product. Although papeletas do not have specific shapes or dimensions, most are rectangular with two sides approximately 10 to 12 cm by 12 to 14 cm, at times with four beveled corners. Formerly, oval-shaped papeletas were used, generally arranged with the larger axis vertically, from 12 to 14 cm. These oval papeletas are 18

The first and main function of these pieces is to make the product more attractive, that is, allowing preservation of the aroma and the flavor of cigars, in its function as a seal or wrapper that avoids deterioration. Lastly, some of the elements shall also provide the consumer with product information: The elements that form the set currently known as a “Juego de Habilitaciones”, are as follows:

Tapaclavos or contraseña (nail concealed or password): A small-sized label placed over the nail, for the purpose of concealment, which joins the lid to the front side panel. It is strongly adhered to the chest since it requires breaking when opening in order to avoid pilferage or the fraudulent substitution of cigars. Independent of what we have just mentioned regarding its shape and dimensions, and although generally oval in shape, there are some tapaclavos that are round, square or rectangular.
