for their speculation that given the type of relations existing between two towering personalities, it could well have been a ploy to push the team to the Second Division. Certainly, there is no proof in the matter as the decision after Mahindra’s withdrawal was taken by the committee. But it could have well been influenced, like it has happened when warning Churchill for his right utterances on the poor standards of refereeing.

ham City on Saturday and United beat Wigan Athletic 2-0 at Old Trafford. Arsenal, in third on 26 points, lost 3-2 at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Mancini’s multi-millionpound squad had scored only three goals and taken five points from their last five matches to leave their fans frustrated with the Italian and his cautious style.

Inter Milan's crisis intensified on Sunday with a 2-1 defeat at Chievo, where Samuel Eto'o appeared to commit a Zinedine Zidane-like headbutt that could result in a lengthy suspension. Inter president Massimo Moratti gave coach Rafael Benitez his backing after last weekend's derby defeat by leaders AC Milan, but another loss has left the Spaniard exposed with the champions now nine points off top spot. Eto'o was not cautioned by the referee for his headbutt, but the Cameroon striker could be punished retrospectively. He scored Inter's consolation goal late on after Sergio Pellissier and Davide Moscardelli put Chievo two up. Second-placed Lazio also lost ground on Milan after a 1-1 draw at Parma that left the gap at

Premier League club Blackburn Rovers are set to have their home ground Ewood Park renamed by their new Indian owners, a newspaper report said on Sunday. Poultry giant Venky's, which sealed a £54-million ($86.07million) deal on Friday to become the first Indian company to own a Premier League club, would name the ground after itself or another sponsor, the Indian Express newspaper reported. "We need to improve the brand Blackburn Rovers. The management thus far has done a good job but has not been proactive enough. We are looking to change that," Venk y's chairperson Anuradha Desai was quoted as saying. "We are looking to spread the name of Blackburn Rovers wherever we can. India is our major target," she said.

Benitez under pressure ahead of CL REuTERS MILAN, NOV 22

Inter Milan coach Rafael Benitez is under immense pressure for a win in the Champions League this week but a number of his colleagues are also under the Spotlight. Holders Inter know a home victory over Twente Enschede in Group A on Wednesday will seal progress to the last 16 with a game to spare but their form is so bad that nothing is being taken for granted. Injury has ravaged Benitez's side but a derby defeat by AC Milan two weekends ago, Sunday's 2-1 reverse at Chievo and the 3-1 loss to Tottenham in the Champions League have led to reports his job could be under threat if Inter lose to Twente. ''I am a professional coach and I have had situations like this before and I know the only way out of it is to work hard and do even more,'' Benitez said. ''It's a difficult situation with a team that has won so much. It's not easy for them.'' Jose Mourinho, who inspired Inter's treble triumph last term

before leaving for Real Madrid, is under no such pressure at the Bernabeu with his side already through but his conduct in Wednesday's Group G game at Ajax will still be under scrutiny. The combative Portuguese has just served a two-match domestic touchline ban for arguing with a referee while he faces a separate punishment for a spat with Sporting Gijon coach Manuel Preciado. Mourinho, who suggested Gijon had not made a serious attempt to beat Barcelona earlier this term, must make sure Real are fully motivated in Amsterdam to avoid similar accusations from group rivals AC Milan as they seek qualification at Auxerre. But with the Clasico against Barcelona the following Monday, Mourinho may be tempted to rest players as Ajax try to take the race for the second qualification spot to the final game.
