New cars are purchased or leased to provide a reliable mode of transportation. But some vehicles malfunction even when they are fresh off of the dealership lot. Other times manufacturers or safety watchdog groups determine that certain cars and trucks have an issue that requires a recall to keep roadways safe. Vehicle recall statistics are difficult to pin down. That’s because there is no standard rate of recalls per year, as recalls depend on safety statistics for particular makes and models. For example, in 2009 more than 40 million Toyota vehicles were recalled due to a faulty gas pedal. An automotive recall is how manufacturers inform drivers that there could be something about their cars or trucks that presents a risk of injury or property damage. The recall may be independently conducted by the manufacturer or ordered by a safety group, such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall involves the manufacturer providing a free, safe and effective remedy for the faulty component. When a recall is announced, drivers may not have to immediately visit a dealership to have the problem corrected. Owners should wait for an official letter. The letter will narrow down which vehicles are affected. There should be a specific window of time presented in which the vehicle can be repaired. Vehicle owners are urged to pay attention to the performance of their cars or trucks to see if they are exhibiting any problems. If so, schedule an appointment for repair according to the recall instructions provided. The notification letter should include the risk of hazard posed by the problem as well as the free remedy and how long the repair should take. There also should be a description of what an owner can do if he or she is unable to have the problem remedied within a reasonable amount of time and without charge. If repair work has been done on a vehicle prior to knowledge of the recall, owners may be eligible for reimbursement for their expenses, provided they kept their receipts. While reimbursement for damages that the defect may have caused are not covered by recalls, owners may be able to solicit reimbursement privately. The following are steps to take when informed of a recall: 1. Contact the dealer service manager and explain that you are inquiring about work required as part of a recall. 2. If the manager has not remedied the situation and provided the next steps, contact the manufacturer, which should be able to handle the situation. 3. If all else fails, Americans can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at www.recalls. gov. Canadians can contact Transport Vehicle safety recalls are designed to keep Canada at www.tc.gc.ca. roadways and passengers safe.

Revive the art of letter-writing

Getting a handwritten letter nowadays is extraordinary, as people often do not take the time to write letters in an age when emailing, texting and tweeting have revolutionized the way people communicate with one another. However, writing notes, letters and exclamations of love can be more intimate, especially on Valentine’s Day. In France, love letters are called billet doux. The French are known to be romantics at heart, but that doesn’t mean people from all over the globe can’t put pen to paper to express their feelings. Handwritten letters are often seen as thoughtful gestures, especially when those letters are expressing intimate sentiment. Here are some guidelines for writing a love note or letter. • Visit a stationery store and find a nice piece of stationery and envelope to use for the letter. If you are putting forth the effort to create a beautiful, handwritten letter, you can add to the experience by selecting a fine paper on which to write. There are many different types of paper, including some that are embossed. Some may even feature flower petals or leaves embedded in the paper. • Brush up on your penmanship. A letter will be rendered useless if it isn’t legible. Therefore, practice penmanship before sitting down to write your letter. • Have a picture of the person to whom you will be addressing the letter nearby. This may provide some inspiration. • Jot down ideas on a piece of scrap paper. Think about how your romantic partner makes you feel and the qualities he or she possesses that you find appealing, and use concrete examples why you love and care for this person. • Write a rough draft of the letter and be sure to proofread it for misspellings and grammatical errors. • Always write from the heart and be sincere in what you say. Try to call out specific examples that recall particularly fond memories. • Write your final copy of the letter on the good paper. Make sure it is neat and legible. Be sure you date it because it is likely the note will be saved. • You may want to wait a day or two before sending the letter to be sure the sentiments you expressed are truly what you want to say. If so, mail or hand deliver the note. Love letters and other handwritten notes are quickly becoming a thing of the past, as technology has largely replaced pen and paper. Yet, those who want to add a special touch to any occasion can choose to write a letter and make a lasting impression.

Seduction, Hollywood style Alas, your better half is determined to watch one of her favorite romantic movies (for the umpteenth time) on Valentine’s Day with you. But why on earth do women love Romeo and Juliet stories so much? It’s simple: the hero falls madly in love with the heroine! In other words, the plot covers everything that’s required to ignite the flames of love in the fair sex. This year, why not try something playful? Make the dreams of your loved one come true by inviting her to re-enact one of the famous love scenes that make her sigh with envy. To make it even more realistic, obtain all the necessary accessories for the scene and learn some of the seductive lines that she’ll love to respond to—after all, chances are that she knows them by heart! Here are a few suggestions: • •

Johnny and Baby’s dance in Dirty Dancing Sam and Molly’s pottery session in Ghost

• • • • • • •

A huge shopping spree like Edward and Vivian’s in Pretty Woman Peter and Mary Jane’s upside down kiss in Spider Man Noah and Allie’s passionate reunion in The Notebook Rhett and Scarlett’s game of seduction in Gone with the Wind The refrigerator scene between John and Elizabeth in 9 ½ Weeks Practically any scene with Jack and Rose in Titanic A Brad Pitt movie, such as Thelma and Louise

There's no better way to say Happy Valentine's Day Than with a box of chocolate covered strawberries

Other film suggestions: Moulin Rouge, Out of Africa, Love Story, Love Actually, When Harry met Sally, Top Gun, The Bridges of Madison County, The English Patient, and Doctor Zhivago.

1001 ways to say “I love you”

On this special day of love, both for sweethearts and for friends and family, saying “I love you” is a must. Repeating those same three little words on a daily basis can make them lose their shine, so it’s up to us to restore the luster they deserve. Fortunately, love can be expressed in many different ways.

$12.49 a lb.

Show it! What could be better for expressing our feelings than to put them down on paper, such as by writing a poem, for example? Now that’s a demonstration of love that is bound to touch your loved one. If writing isn’t one of your strengths, think about a gift instead. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune; just choose it with loving care. Why not offer a bouquet of favorite flowers, a box of luxurious chocolates, or anything else that will make your loved one say “You shouldn’t have—but I love it!” Share it! Another way of expressing your feelings is to spend some quality time with your loved one. A few suggestions: sharing a romantic dinner for two at your favorite restaurant; concocting a meal together, accompanied by some gentle much-loved music; sharing the pleasure of a massage together; stretching out side-by-side in a whirlpool bath; going to the movies or cuddling up on the couch while watching one at home; going away for a lovers’ weekend; or flying to a romantic destination. Say it in a different language! Impress your soul mate by whispering words of love in a different language. Here are a few ways to say “I love you” other than in English: Je t’aime (French); Ich liebe dich (German); Te quiero (Spanish); Ti amo (Italian); Ik hou van jou (Dutch); Minä rakastan sinua (Finnish); Jag älskar dig (Swedish). Have a happy Valentine’s Day!

An Antidote To Post–Super Bowl Blues

(NAPS)—Each year, many Americans experience “Heart- break Monday,” the start of the workweek following the Super Bowl when reality sets in: The football season is over. Dr. Angelos Halaris, the medical director of adult psychiatry at Loyola University Medical Center, explains: “When a person engages in a pleasurable activity, such as watching a football game, a neurotransmitter [brain chemical] called dopamine is released in a part of the brain called the nucleus accumbens. When the pleasurable activity ends, the person is left with a feeling of deprivation.”* It may ease the sting to remember that Valentine’s Day is just a few days away. Consider these tips to “Wow Her” this Valentine’s Day (and remember, a new season of football is only a few months away). • Let the roses do the talking this Valentine’s. 100 Premium Long Stem Red Roses in a Vase can be the ultimate way to say “I love you”...and so much more. This spectacular arrangement is artistically hand-designed by expert florists and is sure to Wow Her. 100 Premium Long Stem Red Roses in a Vase is available at www.1800Flowers.com. • The more you give, the more you get. Handcrafted in small batches for Valentine’s Day, these exquisite heart-shaped chocolates are made from the freshest and highest-quality ingredients from around the world. FM Artisan Heart includes a wide variety of flavors, from Caramel and Chocolate Dipped Strawberry to Bourbon Vanilla and Double Shot Espresso. A box of 25 pieces is available at www.FannieMay.com. • Give her office-bragging rights, even if it’s just for one day. Unlock a unique Valentine’s Day surprise: gorgeous red and purple blooms gathered into a deep purple vase for one unforgettable arrangement. Perhaps the best part, however, is the delicate silver key necklace that lets her know she’ll always have your heart. “The Key to My Heart’’ arrangement is exclusive to www.1800Flowers.com. *Loyola University Medical Center, loyolamedicine.org, January 30, 2013 Roses never go out of style and always deliver a Valentine’s smile.
