Ionic balance The ionic equilibrium studies the equilibria that occur in the aqueous solution. The acid-base balance in biological systems is so important that it can mean the difference between health and disease. The species they produce in the charge solution are called electrolytes. An electrolyte is any other species that allows the conduction of electric current.

The Water Solutions A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. These substances are known as solute (found in lesser amount) and solvent (which is in greater quantity).

Properties Of Water Solutions SOLUTE + = AQUEOUS SOLUTION The ability to conduct electricity from a solution depends on the number of ions it contains. Solution of NaCl in Water Each Na ion is surrounded by water molecules with its negative pole oriented towards the cation. Likewise, each Cl ion is surrounded by water molecules with its positive anion-oriented pole.

Basic Acid Theories Arenius: It expresses acid-base dissociation as an ionic dissociation where the acid species is cationic and the ionic base AB → A ++ B-

Lewis An acid is a substance capable of accepting a pair of electrons and a base capable of donating electrons

Electrolite

All solutes that are soluble in water can be: Electrolytes: are those that dissolve in water, conduct electricity. These in turn are divided into: 1. Strong electrolyte: Contains a large number of ions 2. Weak electrolyte: Contains a small number of ions No Electrolytes: They are those that do not conduct electricity when they dissolve in water.
