PROJECTS

Master Projects Projects from the different Master Studios going with the writing of research reports

Final Diploma Project “Art&Care - Architecture to link artistic facilities & a mental institution

PROJECTS - MASTER STUDIOS

accompanied by written research

Divers[Ident]ity Project : Design of a European Conference Center in the city of Terezin (Cz). The whole City has been used as a jewish ghetto during the WWII. This terrible episode is still present on the walls of the town. 8

Problematic : In a very strong historical context, how to design a Conference Center to make it more than a memorial ? Primary themes : The transmission of the memory - Intervention in deeply marked places.

Studio director : G. Prasenc (At)

The Structure’s Speech Project : Urban restructuring of the Regional Hospital Center of Lille + Design of a Parking Structure for 1000 vehicules. Problematic : How to transform an Hospital Center into a hybrid living place ? Primary themes : The medical project - frontage interventions - hybridization of the public space - Construction techniques - Agriculture in the city

Studio director : B. Verney & D.Debarge (Fr)

Theater-Hospital Project : Reflection on the possible mix between an hospital and a theater, in the city-center of Lille. This project is an experimental approach to the question of the social project in the architectural design : How to make the hospital a more confortable place ? Problematic : On a small area, how to integrate different process without disturbing one another ? Primary themes : Complexity - Hybrid buildings - Cohabitation of different programs - Theater design

Studio director : C.Franck (Fr) & F.Ross (UK)

Atelier O (Water Studio) Project : From the theme of the WATER in the metropolitan area of Lille, to develop a new process of urban intervention. Before the XXth century, Lille used to be a water-city. The last hundred years, it has experienced an artificial process of drying out. We started to consider rainwater as a mark of a natural timescale in an entropic environment, and as an energy for spontaneous developments inside the city.

9

Problematic : How to make the people live more naturally with their environment ? Primary themes : New urban intervention process (bottom-up) - History and marks of water in the cities - New landscape intervention and design process

Studio director : B.Grosjean & F.Andrieux (Fr)

Art & Care

[final project]

Project : Urban intervention around a mental institution and reflection about the possible link between the institution and theatrical facilities. “The show factory” is in my opinion the best place to make people meet. The public, the patients and the artists could meet and work together on theatrical projects. Problematic : How to organize the theatrical facilities to generate a new medical process for patients, in order to make their way to the public life easier ? Primary themes : Complexity - Atmosphere of public spaces - Hybrid buildings - New design for mental institutions - Theater design

Studio director : C.Franck (Fr) & F.Ross (UK)

Final Diploma Project

“ART & CARE” Architecture to link artistic facilities & a mental institution

CONTEXT AND

PROBLEMATICS

A town within the town ... and borders The mental institution of Saint-André was founded in the XVIIth century. At this time, it used to be an autonomous village of 1000 inhabitants, surrounded with fields and kitchen gardens. The evolution of the insitution, of the technologiy and of the town made it a big district surrounded by a wall: a strong border to separate the hospital and the public life. Most of the buildings are now abandonned, and the

10

fields arround them are useless. What to do with this space ?

Central composition The hospital has been built on a grid, and around the main building (the H). Arriving here, we can feel a strong and stern atmosphere of the old mental institution.

Borders to cross The abundance of unqualified spaces is the main argument to rethink the place of the hospital and the privacy of the grounds. How to make it more confortable for the institution ?

URBAN INTERVENTION HYBRID PUBLIC SPACE

Opportunities for the local life Density & intensity The residential areas have grown around the wall. To bring down the wall means to give large spaces to the inhabitants : the wood to the north become a public park. The new spaces are a centrality for the area, dedicated to a recreational and pedestrian public life, in an environnement that gave untill now the priority to the car.

Dissolution Change the hierarchy The composition of the new residential area has to neutralize the hospital :

13

the symmetry is broken to beneďŹ t ambivalent public spaces.

Reduce the hospital area and make it better The hospital is now concentrated in the nothern part of the building : more quiet, next to the park. The south wing of the building hosts the theater and the public (up to down)

The theater’s workshops and the hospital Between the hospital and the theater, the workshops are indoor spaces where the people

(patients, artists and volunteers) can come together on theatrical projects (body practices / rehearsals, props building,...). It takes the form of a comb (alternance of outdoor and indoor spaces) to create transparencies and dynamism

“U.F.O” - UNKNOWN FLOATING OBJECT

HEMICYCLE

SMALL MEDIUM

COLYSEE

The original project brief called for the design of a floating architecture intended for various activities (exhibitions, conferences, official receptions,...). The design has to be original enough to relate the dynamism of the regional companies. The polyvalence and the flexibility wanted force us to develop the idea ea of sharing the sufaces in several smaller identical structures that could be assembled according to needs of different uses. 24

The design creates two meeting all places: an inside room, and a small theater on the roof. TUGBOAT

Meeting room

Toilets Office kitchen

Moving culture The small modules are easy to move all over the waterways (that are really important in the region). From the “Small” mode to the

25

“Colysee” mode, spaces are increasing to host from 15 to 150 people for moving exhibitions, music concerts,...

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT COMPETITION

NORPAC

RETHINKING THE COMPAGNY HEADQUARTERS 26

The goal of this very fast competition (only 24 hours) to find an original design implementation - way of life - to transform the company headquarters and make them more adapted to the sustainable development. Our team proposes to work on the skin of the building. The intervention would be done with recycled and stabilized toxic waste coming from the multiple dredging operations in the local canals.

GRAPHISM COMPETITION

INSTITUT FÜR ZEITGENÖSISCHES KUNST This is a competition between all the students of the course of Miss DeibholzHummele. The paintings are realized on large paper with natural pigments. The evaluation examines the creativity regarding a theme, graphic efficiency, and the skill to use the small group of available colours z
