HENRIETTE BIRCH HANSEN Industrial design portfolio 2016

I DESIGN BECAUSE I CAN’T HELP MYSELF Hi there, I’m Henriette a young industrial designer with a strong eagerness to learn. I enter projects with curiosity and a desire to create great products for the end users as well as being a motivating team player in the design process. I believe in an experimental and holistic approach to design which focus on offering a strong value proposition to the end user. I love working back and forth between exploring the user needs and converting them into solutions. I believe we has a responsibility as designer to ask relevant questions about how things is done now and use the answers to design a better future. I have a drive to challenge myself to develop my skillset and become a better designer. The following pages will be a tour through my professional profile and a selected work - I hope you will enjoy my portfolio

SAY HELLO TO GEORG “GEORG” was an individual project where I had to choose and analyze a designer’s products and design philosophy. The task was to design a candlestick holder based on the designer’s philosophy and design approach. I choose to work with Georg Nelson. Georg nelson designed several modular products especially in the office furniture category. This was used as inspiration to design “GEORG” as a triangle which could be a part of a big pattern or just stand alone and light the room. Designed by Henriette Birch Hansen

Design is a process one starts with a need, a problem, and ends up with a design for a thing. The basic rules are not complicate: a designed object has to do what is was made for – Georg Nelson

Experience Stokke Nursing The new Stokke Nursing series is a fictive project where Stokke is used as a case-company to design a new product series. Stokke Nursing consists of Stokke Mom and Stokke Bonding. The series create a relaxing environment around the breast pumping experience. You can support the baby with the Stoke Bonding pillow or use it for your own relaxation. With the unique hydronic massage and pumping solution, Stokke Mom is much quieter than alternatives, and provides the calm and quiet atmosphere throughout the pumping session. By gently messaging the breast and applying a fast suction, Stokke Mom creates a more pleasant and natural feeling, mimicking how the baby mouth would extract the milk. Designed by Alexander Sun, Lasse Jepsen, Niels Bach and Henriette Birch Hansen

ANALYZING THE PROBLEM VALUES VS. MARKET OFFERINGS In this project the initial research revealed a big gap between the values the markets breast pumps offer and what the mothers actually wants. This lead to a project which focused on reframing what a breast pump could be, based on the mother’s values and needs.

Market breast pump offerings looks like this, they work but the mothers hate them The right values with the right functionalities

Value gap

The products make the mothers feel vulnerable, exposed and like milking cows

This is the experience the mother wants even though she needs to use a breast pump

Stokke nursing helps the mother to get a bonding experience and feel more like a mother instead of an exposed milking cow 7

Stokke Bonding nursing pillow which enables the mother to bond with the baby while milking out. It gives a better milk flow and a more relaxed situation

The breast pump provides massage and suction on and around the nipple using a hydraulic pump system

Leather handle for transporting the Stokke Mom breast pump. The design permits the mother to carry the baby at the same time

8

Transparent breast cups which can be placed in the bra for a hands-free experience

MARKET POTENTIAL USING STOKKES WORLDWIDE DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS

TARGET PRICE & PRODUCTION PRICE

With access to a global distribution network Stokke will be able to address the breast pump world market.

The target price is based on the market standard of similar products. Calculations showed that the contribution margin for the different stakeholders and how much each earned. What was left was the target production cost. It turns out that if Stokke Mom takes 2% or more of the breast pump market then Stokke can have a CMR of 40% as targeted. Production price 950Dkr Stokke 380Dkr

Wholesaler 270Dkr

DIFFERENT PRICES FOR DIFFERENT NEEDS The breast pump market consists of products in all price ranges from high to low. Stokke Mom is in the mid-high to high price range, but the product architecture is designed to support a scale down, allowing Stokke to address the mediumlow to medium price range, herby expanding the potential customer base.

TARGET RETAIL PRICE 3000 DKR

Retailer 800Dkr Double pump - high price-

VAT 25% 600Dkr

Singel pump - medium price -

PECTUS AN ECG MONITOR In the United States a lot of different home monitoring systems exist and are rapidly emerging the market. In the heart disease area different monitoring systems are made for patients who already suffers from heart diseases. EY predicts that home healthcare will be the future due to the technology development and the era of big data (www. ey.com). This made me think; could we maybe make an intuitive product which would help the patients to give them self a checkup? Pectus is my proposal for a new home monitoring ECG system for everyone who wants a quick health scan. Pectus was an individual assignment where finding a trend and combining this with a technology and a form was in focus. Designed by Henriette Birch Hansen

LED FEEDBACK

Interviews with 9 potential users indicated a fear of not using the electrodes right. The users biggest concern was that they couldn’t see if the electrodes was connected to the App. To accommodate the users, concern an LED light band is integrated in each electrode. When connecting the electrode to the Pectus App the whitw light appears. The App gives feedback as well.

COMPONENTS Pectus is designed based on how existing electrode technology works. Due to the wireless connection and the LED light band, electronics needs to be fitted into Pectus. The dimensions and component structures is inspired by other products on the market. This was a necessity due to the complexity of the electronic.

INTERACTION DESIGN One of the focus areas was on how the user should interact with Pectus. A small analysis of how other products in the category worked formed the basis for the new interaction vison. 1.Pectus comes in a small box

2.The box contains three electrodes and one-time use patches

3.Take one electrode

5.Place the electrodes on the body as shown on the image

6.Connect the Pectus App with the Pectus electrodes using the wireless internet

7.ECG monitoring can be started and will take around 10 minutes

8.Remove and throw out used patches

9.Place electrodes in the Pectus box

10.Close the box

11. Connect the box to the charger Pectus is now ready for next time

DATA FLOW The Pectus system uses Big data to analyze the ECG scan. The electrodes register the electrical impulses from the heart and monitoring them. The information from the electrodes is transmitted to the app through the wireless internet. The app used big data to compare the ECG with other ECG’s which is stored in the cloud. The app evaluates the information and sends back a binary answer. This means that the user will only know if there is any abnormality but not what disease they might have.

EVE A ROBOTIC VACUUM CLEANER Eve is a robotic vacuum cleaner which helps the user to get an automated floor cleaning at all times. The small hand cleaner can be detached to clean surfaces where Eve can’t go, like the sofa or in small corners. This project epmaphised on disassembling other robotic vacuums to get a deep understanding of the mecha-tronic components. The shape and interaction, among others, was based on the design of the internal com-ponents. To test Eve several models to examine the interaction and shape was made. Designed by Rune Gyntzel, Louise Ullmann, Kristine Kronborg, Simon Freundlich, Janne Thomsen and Henriette Birch Hansen

Munio is a lounge series devolved for the furniture company Cube Design. A collaboratoin between the company and Aau was set up and made it possible to get feedback from Cube Design during the project. With Munio Wall it’s possible to make a cozy defined soft seating area. Munio can facilitate small meetings between colleges. If needed the area can be used as an informal relaxed space. Munio Wall and Sofa is upholstered with a fabric named Xpress, designed by Gabriel. The modular wall system gives you the possibility to combine patterns and colors as you please. Some potential combinations is shown to the right.
