LIONS CLUBS INTERATIONAL DISTRICT 410 B

As the year is rapidly drawing to a close I am in two minds, it has been a great year for me, I have met some wonderful Lions and made some firm friendships. But on the other hand it will be nice to get back to normality and be a family man once again. My grandchildren have missed both of us this fiscal year. I would like to sincerely thank the clubs who assisted with the District Growth Fund, and I sincerely hope we can continue with this fund and build it to assist any needy Lion or assist new clubs or struggling clubs in the process. We had a wonderful Multiple District convention in East

London—I might add we had an ideal opportunity to visit our two eldest children in Grahamstown, they were so grateful for a day before the convention and a day after. The grandchildren could not understand why we couldn't stay longer. It would be remiss of me not to congratulate the clubs who received awards, and my banner patch, well done—you guys went that extra mile. We won the Multiple District Golden Pen Scrap Book Trophy. Peggy put many hours into my scrap book. I now have a wonderful reminder of my many visits to clubs and projects so far.

Lions Club of Phalaborwa Visit What a pleasant surprise on arriving in Phalaborwa to be informed I should do a new member induction. Four ladies were ready to join the organisation. LP Sussie is the driving force of the club, they do so much good in the community. I thought Warmbad Lions was the reigning pancake queens until I heard how many are made and sold in Phalaborwa! Thank you LP Sussie for your dedication!

Lions Club of Letaba Tzaneen Visit Since their club-house was tragically burnt down the Lions of Tzaneen have pulled together and have now become a closely knit family. They are all eager to rebuild and restart the club-house under the guidance of their capable President Lorette. Our stay there was unforgettable! Thank you to the members of Tzaneen, Lorette, ZC Philip & RC Martin.

Lions Club of Pietersburg Visit

Many thanks must go to Karl Varkevisser and the members of Pietersburg Lions Club. We had a great time and it was wonderful seeing you all again!

Lions Club of Germiston Visit The Germiston Lions Club under the expert guidance of Lion President Victor Hanger was very impressive, such a small club and they do so much in the community —many elderly Lions. How about some new blood—youth? All those years of experience could be put to good use and be passed on.

PDG’s Ladies Luncheon A very pleasant luncheon was arranged by PDG Lilian McClarty in Kemptonpark recently for all the ladies of the Past District Governors of District B. It was nice to see Dianne Reid again. Dianne is now living in Johannesburg and I am sure she will attend all the future functions. Dianne is the widow of PDG Steward Reid.

Region A Buddy Day

Buddy Day—what can I say, what a wonderful project! Still going strong getting bigger and bigger every year. Zone Chairperson Karl Bands is the very capable Chairperson. Most of the clubs in the region A join in and do the entertaining. We were joined by the new Prospective St Augustine Lions Club, Monash was also there to lend a hand.

Roodepoort Clearwater Cyber Club Visit After Buddy Day a very pleasant afternoon was spent with the Roodepoort Clearwater Cyber Club relaxing on the stoep with an icy cold one. Lion President Paul Maartins has done a sterling job of Presidency this year and was promptly voted in again, well done. Thanks for a very pleasant afternoon.

Nelspruit's Trail for the Blind Opening We were invited to attend the official opening of the Nelspruit Botanical Gardens, Blind Trail. I was very impressed to see this child read the plaque and feel the plants below. What a wonderful project for the blind! Thanks Nelspruit for a wonderful stay. We thoroughly enjoyed the weekend.

Jakaranda Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt was held at the Carel du Toit on Wednesday 13 March an early Centre. The name Carel du Toit Centre in Pretoria has changed to Whispers. Eight Lions gathered to hide eggs in the garden. The Children had fun collecting the eggs, enough for them, the teachers, and other staff at the centre as well as the Lions. It was great fun only to be topped by the handing out of toys, books and crayons. The toys were thanks to a donation received from “The Bikers Toy Run”. Once again the Lions of Pretoria Jakaranda managed to gladden the hearts of these children.

Manzini Lions Club Visit The Lions of Manzini under the capable guidance of LP Karen Byars, do amazing things in their community. They built a clinic for diabetics on the right. They contributed towards the renovation of St Theresa’s Eye Clinic [below] which was opened by His Lordship Bishop Louis Ncamiso Ndlovu. But believe me, they can also have fun! We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast at their clubhouse and then a delicious lunch later after the tour. You guys are great.

De Kaap Lions Club Visit Thanks must go to the van Dyk family for the wonderful evening we spent at your home. We enjoyed it immensely, among the bearded dragons, snakes and parrot. LP Jeandre van Dyk is doing a sterling job of being President of the club. He takes no nonsense and is very capable! LS Eureka apart from being a great secretary you are also a wonderful cook. Thank you!

Peace Poster Presentation Thokozane Masanabo receives his Merit Award from Lions Clubs International. Here DC Beaulieu Mare’ and DG Ivan did the official hand-over. Along with the Merit award, Thokozane received a cheque of R5000 which was promptly taken from him by his mother. That money will go a long way to feed many hungry tummies. Well done Beaulieu!

Edenvale Lioness Meeting Why these ladies aren't a fully fledged Lions Club I really don't know! They do a tremendous amount of work in their community and are all so capable. Lionesses, thank you for a lovely informative morning! We thoroughly enjoyed your meeting under your President Henny Nooy’s guidance. Keep up the good work!

Benoni Lakes Lions Club Visit What I enjoyed most about Benoni Lakes was that the children were present! They are truly a family! Lion President Graham Clare managed to get the best out of all his members, there was a wonderful atmosphere at the meeting! We enjoyed the meeting very much! The delicious pizzas, and visit to the Keg was even more enjoyable afterwards! Well done guys you are doing a wonderful job!

Glenoaks Lions Club Visit We spent a very pleasant evening with LP Mark Meltzer and his members. We enjoyed the promotional speaker too! Well done Mark.

Soweto Host Lions Club Visit Its always a pleasure to go into the heart of Soweto to their Community Centre and meet with the President Ltumeleng Kwapeng and his members. They always give me a job to do, this time I had to induct two new members and plant a tree! It was a pleasure! Well done!

Zone 3’s Fun Day Zone 3 in the capable hands of Lion President Neels from Rustenburg Lions Club. A day of fun and games was enjoyed by all. A new member was inducted under the shady trees by ZC Karl Bands. Welcome to you! After all these years you are now a Lion! The Fun Day trophy is presented to Helderkruin by LP Neels.

Lions of Club of Vereeninging Vereeninging Lighting Project - they delivered 44 lighting kits (solar panel, 1 light and a cell phone charger) to an impoverished small community. (no electricity or running water). Great stuff! That’s what its all about!

DC Lions Alert, Gerrie Schoeman District Chairperson for Lions Alert lecturing the Lions who attended the ‘Recruiting for Blood Donation’ class recently.

District Golf Day—Growth Fund

Reading Country Club

A very big thank you to all the clubs who contributed to this wonderful day. Those Lions who played thoroughly enjoyed the day and would highly recommend playing next year. Thanks everyone! Approximately R40 000 was made.

Lions Club of Soweto Host

Soweto Host planted 25 trees at Glenridge Primary School which is a relatively new school in Soweto. They have adopted this school and have distributed stationary packs in the past and are busy with a reading initiative with them. The trees were donated by Wildlands a conservation company involved in green initiatives throughout South Africa. Keep up the good work!

There is so much in the world for us all if we only have the eyes to see it, and the heart to love it, and the hand to gather it to ourselves…
