Matthews said that at times they will deploy manual-fire fireworks, using the port-fires or flares, igniting a fuse. "There are several different methods, and we use all of them," he said. "You can electronically fire them, and you can use computer controls. It all depends on how

elaborate the display is to be." He has worked on projects that range from easy open settings to precision conditions in a city. East Coast also does indoor shows. A unique opportunity for Matthews was launching from the wooden deck of a famous World War II aircraft carrier about 15 years ago. "If you're out in the middle of the country, it's easy," he said. "If you are wanting a show launched from a roof top, that's different. Shooting from the flight deck of the USS Yorktown, that was very unique." Their inventory

includes multi-effect barrage devices, lowlevel effects such as "walls of comets," mines and precision exhibition candle scenes, traditional aerial shells, state of the art graphic pattern shells, and exotic European manufacture imports. Matthews said that for Kerr Lake, tradition is holding the upper hand. You can't improve much on what has already worked so well:
