Castaways to perform at final Meet Me in the Street The third and final “Meet Me in the Street” concert for 2012 will be held on September 13 and will feature The Castaways — a band with nearly 50 years of experience in the beach music industry. From their beginning in Durham in 1961, The Castaways have been pleasing audiences with their unique flavor of beach, soul, and rock n’ roll music. The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce hosts these free, local concerts which are presented by sponsors Harris Incorporated of Henderson and Budweiser. The 2012 “Meet Me in the Street” concert series started out with a few surprises. The first event, scheduled for April 26, had to be postponed due to inclement weather and was rescheduled for May 11. That event, which featured local band, The Konnection, turned out to be a perfect evening with food, fun and a dancing crowd. The second event was held on May 31 with The Entertainers commanding the stage. Again
the weather cooperated with temperatures well into the 90s. These concerts are made possible by our many Chambermember sponsors. Gold sponsors for this year are BB&T, Maria Parham Medical Center and Toyota of Henderson. Silver Sponsors are AA Self Storage, AAA Gas & Appliance Company, Greenway’s Authentic Charcoal Grill, P&G Petcare, Philips Optimum, Progress Energy and Satterwhite Point Marina. Other sponsors include: Contributing sponsors Bobbitt Signs, For Your Occasion Party Rentals, Franklin Brothers Nursery & Greenhouses, Inc., KARTS, Kerr Lake Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Mike Brooks Productions, Quick Print, Rural Health Group at Henderson and US Cellular; Food and Beverage sponsors Coca-Cola, Community Workforce Solutions, Harris Incorporated of Henderson, Pizza Inn and Sunset Slush. Media sponsors for each event are The Daily Dispatch, WIZS 1450 Radio and WLUS 98.3.
The Castaways will bring their nearly 50 years of experience in the beach music industry to bear for the final Meet Me in the Street event scheduled for Sept. 13.

2012 Leadership Vance graduates 20 The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce announced 20 graduates from its annual Leadership Vance program. Leadership Vance is designed to create a group of informed and dedicated leaders who will contribute to the community. The program is organized into 12 sessions, which began on Feb. 16 with an orientation breakfast at VanceGranville Community College and concluded on June 19 with a graduation ceremony and dinner at Greenway’s Authentic Charcoal Grill. Participants are exposed to various aspects of Henderson and Vance County, specifically in regard to city and county government, health and community resources, economic development, agriculture and natural resources, history, media, criminal justice and law. The 2012 Leadership Vance Class completed its sessions on June 7 with the group hard at work on the required Community Service project which is selected, organized and completed by class participants. This year’s class spent the day building six raised, wooden plant beds for the children at Clarke Elementary. Teachers will use them to show students how to plant food crops so that they learn first hand that food does not originate in a grocery store. The experience will also likely allow students to prepare and cook the items as well. The plan was originated by Pete Burgess with the support of Farm Bureau, who wrote a note of thanks to the class for their time and efforts. On June 19, the class celebrated their graduation with a dinner at Greenway’s Authentic Charcoal Grill which offered them a choice of 6 oz. filet,

After a delicious meal for graduates and their guests, diplomas were awarded for completing the five-month course. Program manager Rachel Hedrick was presented an autographed piece of granite from Greystone
Quarry with the words “You Rock” and signatures of all the class members as a memento. The event ended with a pictorial Powerpoint presentation featuring memories and highlights from the five-month class. Participants in this year’s class included: Sherri Shontiee Alston (Vance Co. Dept. of
Social Services); Catherine Blankenship (Maria Parham Medical Center); Kelly Bondurant (Vance-Granville Community College); Michael Bobbitt (self-employed); Porcha Brooks (Vance County Tax administrator); Thomas Hampton (P&G Pet Care); Freda Hawley (Walmart Distribution Center

BB&T celebrates 90 years locally Joint Business After Hours held in May, June
BB&T hosted a Business After Hours at their location at 632 Dabney Drive on July 31. The event was held to celebrate the company’s more than 90 years of service to the local community and to thank the community for its continued support. Beer, wine and a variety of foods were served as part of the celebration. BB&T continues to be a major sponsor of Chamber events including the Annual Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament for which they have been the presenting sponsor for the last 14 years.
A joint Business After Hours was held on June 28 along the streets of Downtown Henderson. The event was hosted by Rosemyr Corporation, Vance County Arts Council and Interiors and Gifts Too. First stop for this event was in beautiful Emrose Park where guests registered for door prizes and sampled a variety of ice creams with all the fixings. From there, guests meandered next door to the Arts Council facility where champagne and finger foods were served while touring the gallery and its many
fabulous works on display. Two other tours were offered to showcase the new upstairs apartments recently completed by Rosemyr (across the street from the park) and the apartments available above Interiors and Gifts Too. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages were available while browsing through Interiors and Gifts Too. Finally music punctuated the evening back at Emrose Park where guests gathered for the door prize drawings. Voted Best Nursing Home in Vance County
Clarke Elementary School hosted a ribbon-cutting on July 31 to celebrate the new gazebo and raised plants beds that were built for them through the joint efforts of the 2012 Chamber of Commerce Leadership Vance Class, Vance County Farm Bureau and Vance-Granville Community College. Pete Burgess, representing Vance County Farm Bureau proposed this project in response to a request made by Leadership Vance for a community service project. He did so in order to acquaint elementary school students with how food is grown before it is processed and sent to the grocery stores for purchase. The students will be involved in planting, growing and harvesting the food that is grown. The class built six raised plant beds at Clarke Elementary in order to teach them about agriculture and where food comes from. VGCC built the gazebo and Farm Bureau provided the funding. The ribbon-cutting was held behind the school. Breedlove Electric was instrumental in transporting the gazebo to the school.

Preparedness plans necessary advice offered to small businesses While weather experts are predicting a “nearnormal” 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, last year’s Hurricane Irene is a reminder of the erratic and devastating nature of tropical storms. The six-month season, which began June 1, typically peaks between August and October. Now is a good time to put a disaster preparedness plan in place to protect your employees and your business. The U.S. Small Business Administration and Agility Recovery Solutions recently hosted a free webinar giving tips on how to prepare for hurricane season and each month they will host a free webinar providing business continuity strategies. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the Gulf Coast or the Upper Midwest — all kinds of risks exist, and small businesses are particularly vulnerable. Businesses eligible for Work Opportunity Tax Credits For the past five years, the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce and the Vance County Department of Social Services have been partners in the STEPS to Self Sufficiency and Job Boost program. This program is a free three-week course designed to help unemployed individuals gain knowledge in how to become more employable and competitive in today’s market. Some of these individuals have become unemployed through no fault of their own as a result of layoffs, businesses closing, etc. and may have worked only one job for several years. The program helps enhance their interviewing skills, job searching techniques, resume preparation, and other skills necessary for securing a job. Participants are also given the nationally recognized Work Keys Certification, which is a test on
Reading, Math and Locating Information. This skills test is also provided free of charge through a partnership with Vance-Granville Community College. Individuals can place in one of three categories: Bronze, Silver or Gold. Employers can use this as an additional tool to recognize and hire highly qualified individuals. Other benefits of hiring these participants include a free criminal background check and a Work Opportunity Tax Credit. The current calendar year has seen 60 participants. Of these 60 participants, 38 of them have gained employment in the local area. For more information about the program or to have a presentation made to your business, contact Connie Ragland at the Chamber at (252) 4388414.
