Evening events relaunch at CAST in Helston CAST IS RELAUNCHING its programme of evening events at its Penrose Road building in Helston on Friday, September 18, with a screening of Taika Waititi’s film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, preceded by CAST Café supper.

The outdoor project “CAST-Off” provided artist-led activities for children and families at locations along the Cober Valley throughout August, with around a thousand children participating, and CAST will continue to provide cultural events and activities into the autumn.

The screening evening has been carefully planned within Covid-19 guidelines. Performances and activities in COVID-19 secure venues are not affected by the new ‘Rule of Six’ and the CAST screening space can safely accommodate up to thirty people with social distancing

measures in place. CAST aims to offer activities that are open to all, but a booking system will operate whilst event numbers are restricted.

The free programme of shorts by artist filmmaker John Smith has also been extended, and will now run until Saturday 3rd October. The hour-long programme is presented on a loop and can be seen Tuesday to Saturday during opening hours in CAST’s black box screening space, no booking required.

Nobody wants a wart. Much less on our hands where they can be seen and felt by other people.

But what are warts?

Cutaneous (skin) warts are small, rough growths that are caused by infection of keratinocytes (skin cells that produce keratin) with human papilloma virus (HPV). They can appear anywhere on the skin but are commonly seen on the hands and feet.

When Melons Go Rolling, DUCK! A COUPLE OF Sundays ago, the Helston Community Interest Company held an Arts & Crafts Market.

It was a great success with nearly thirty stalls and 600 visitors. The Stall Holders were well chuffed about how much money they took. Another Sunday Market is going to be held at the end of November, and hopefully next year it will become a regular monthly affair. Is this the beginning of Helston becoming, again, a Market Town?

This was Helston’s unique selling point. It was what used to make Helston prosperous, energetic. It was its character. Maybe next year we could even close off Coinagehall Street for one Sunday a month, and have markets going all the way down to the Monument. There’s plenty of space

to ensure we can all socially distance.

This must, surely, be our objective.

Let’s think Big, and bring the market back to Coinagehall Street!

This is personal to me. As a kid in my mid-teens, I used to work on Jim’s Fruit & Veg stall. My job was to set up the stall, on my own, at five in the morning, and be ready for Jim to arrive with his lorry. We would then unload the lorry and prepare the stall for the early morning trade.

It was a nightmare getting up at that time. But once I was up, walking down the centre of Helston, on my own, the whole street just to me, it was a pleasure. Now, back in the mid-eighties, the Good Old Days as they are fondly known, it was perfectly acceptable for a boss to physically harm their child workers. And it was no different with

Jim. Sometimes, being half a sleep at this unearthly hour, I’d pick up a box of say melons, not from the base, but by the side. The bottom would giveaway, and the melons would go rolling down the road, coming to a rest in the kennels.

Jim would go ballistic, and would chuck an apple towards my head while screaming expletives. I’d duck, running down the street picking up the now bruised melons. These days such behaviour is, unfortunately, no longer acceptable. Bosses can no longer try to injure their child workers when they screw up. Political correctness gone bonkers, if you ask me!

As always feel free to pop in and see me. What did I learn from an apple being thrown at me at high speed?

Firstly, don’t drop the melons.

Secondly, if the melons do go rolling, DUCK! Life really is that simple. And no, I never got hit by an apple, even though I am sure I

Good literacy, accuracy and attention to detail are vital. You must also be IT literate as the position involves significant computer use.
