Helston Police Station facing closure HELSTON Police Station is set for closure under plans announced by Devon and Cornwall Police last week. Helston has been included in the list for closure along with stations and offices in Camborne, Redruth and Truro, with the stations likely to close in the next four years. In total the plan is to close 13 locations across Cornwall as the force looks to make savings of £29million. Andrew White, chief executive for the PCC said that they were comfortable that the plans announced will have little impact on operational delivery but, if the full cuts become a reality, there would be a significant reduction in the services that can be delivered. Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer is reported to have said: “We are planning for the future by dispensing with buildings which are costly in terms of maintenance while investing in newer and more effi-

cient premises where needed. "We are not removing ourselves from our communities, we are being more efficient and organised around where we base our people to ensure we continue to deliver the best service we can. Police officers and staff solve crime and keep our communities safe, not buildings.

"The vast majority of frontline officers already spend their time out in communities either responding to incidents or engaging with the public. Our police stations are primarily used as a base for officers to work where they can carry out administrative duties, receive briefings and access welfare and hygiene facilities."

Calling all Cornish songwriters and bands A SEARCH has begun for a song to represent Cornwall at the 2016 Pan Celtic Festival in Ireland. Applicants are invited the competition by entering songs written and performed in the Cornish language and the Cornish Language Partnership (MAGA) is offering assistance to writers and bands. Cornish language development manager Jenefer Lowe said: “If you would like to enter but feel you don’t have sufficient knowledge of the language

to write lyrics in Cornish yourself, MAGA can help by assigning you a translator to work with you on your song, free of charge.” Each applicant is able to enter one song into the competition and entries should be newly composed but may be in any genre. Shortlisted entries to the competition will compete against one another at a live concert in Cornwall at the end of January at which a panel of judges will make the final decision.

Building community fund reopens for nominations A BUILDERS merchant in Porthleven is continuing a drive to help local community projects. RGB Building Supplies aims to help community groups complete projects by donating £1000 of building materials every two months via the company’s Well Built Community Fund. Beneficiaries so far include a youth group, an animal welfare

centre and a project to help the homeless. The company is now seeking groups that provide health and fitness facilities to those in their local community. Groups looking to update changing facilities or require materials to create an area to use for sporting activities are invited to apply. RGB spokesman Keith Harris said: “Throughout the area there is a wide range of groups that pro-

The saviour or the killer? A personal connection to a former Helston icon WE will soon discover whether the opening of J D Wetherspoon in Helston will make or break the town centre when the doors finally open next month. We are fortunate to live in a town that is not only historic but remains a pleasant shopping experience and the majority of my own money is spent within the town. Although I feel that some new businesses could enhance the prosperity of Helston, such as more menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clothing options and an electrical retailer spring to mind, I cannot recall many people saying we were in need of an extra place to get hammered on a Saturday night. Do we really want another place where groups of dirty smokers will be congregating in the street puffing their cancer sticks as they do outside â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;spoonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in Penzance? Unless we are talking the strip

variety,â&#x20AC;&#x2C6;I feel that we are â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;well coveredâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with bars. One argument in favour of the pub chain is that they create tons of jobs, but do they create them or close smaller businesses and just move jobs from other locations? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth noting that three months ago the chairman of Jâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6;D Wetherspoons spoke out against the introduction of the living wage, which is exactly what it suggests - being paid enough money to cover basic living expenses. He complained about how it would hit the company hard, a company that only made ÂŁ78m pre-tax profits last year. Perhaps it will give the town centre a boost and we will all indirectly benefit financially on the back of it. I hope so as the alternative of people losing their businesses is an uncomfortable thought.

I ALWAYS feel a twinge of sadness when driving past the new housing estate on land where the Gwealdues Hotel once stood. Thirty years ago my parents moved us to Cornwall to start a new life when they bought the hotel, which they owned for many years. I always felt it was a shame the subsequent owners could not enjoy the same success as my parents and with regret I soon watched hotel begin a rapid decline.

Whereas our family hosted functions for thousands of Helston families, the couple who took over from us soon stopped accepting functions and converted it to a Thai restaurant. What sort of idiot buys a business that is generating huge profits and changes everything that created those returns? That is almost like taking over the Playboy group and dropping the magazine in favour of a church leaflet. The new owners were soon forced to

put the hotel back on the market and left to lick their wounds. The hotel never recovered and a couple years later the doors closed for the final time. Although it does please me to see houses on the site rather than the crumbling wreck it had become, am I the only person wondering where the hell all the home owners will park their cars?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a dogs life to be older and fatter I AM often reminded of the tales of my former unruly pet dog printed on this page, and am encouraged to bring them back. I would, however Dexter the Great Dane was shared with a former girlfriend and he went not long after her. But now I have another dog, and another girlfriend, but this one does nothing as interesting as Dexter and has never even chewed a shoe in the house. His name is Arnie (after the legend Schwarzenegger obviously) and is well

trained, eager to please and the only thing he does that could be called interesting is eating his own faeces in the garden, but then, who doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t? Regular readers of the Helston Advertiser will know that I like to talk about myself as like most people I live with the mistaken belief that my life is fascinating. Many people know that I am a competitive bodybuilder but I have been troubled by the amount of people asking

if I have retired. Presumably they think I look chunky but I can assure you I am only what we call â&#x20AC;&#x153;off-seasonâ&#x20AC;?, which is our own way of saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am fat, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care, shut up skinny and pass me that piece of cake.â&#x20AC;? Next year, I will be back on the stage, if I can be bothered to diet, but then, being chubby tastes great, right?

Cops â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Robbers descend on Cornish Studies Library THE MURKY past of Cornish criminals, and police, will be brought to life this month as Cornwall Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Archives and Cornish Studies Service holds an exciting event at the Cornish Studies Library in Redruth. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Cops â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Robbersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; will use material from Cornish archives such as a register from Bodmin Gaol which gives a glimpse of crime in 19th century Cornwall including physical descriptions of criminals and

sketches of their tattoos. There will also be a range of fascinating artefacts from the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary Heritage Learning resource to illuminate many of the tools and skills used in policing. To top it off, Dandy/Beano cartoonist, Nick Brennan, will be leading two workshops inspired by the material on display. Principal Librarian Kim Cooper said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re delighted to be welcoming Nick

and the police heritage learning resource to the library and think the day will be a really fun and engaging way of learning more about cops and robbers in Cornish history.â&#x20AC;? Jesus Christ Superstar at HfC TIM Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera is coming to The Hall for Cornwall this month and tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through an extraordinary musical score. Jesus Christ Superstar burst onto the musical scene in 1971 stunning audiences and changing the face of musical theatre forever. As compelling today as it was at its inception, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre’s most legendary songs including I Don't Know How to Love Him, Everything's Alright, and Gethsemane and, of course, Superstar. Leading performer Glenn Carter returns as Jesus, a role he has played in the West End, on Broadway and on film. Musical theatre star Tim Rogers, whose

Coast Path Challenge gets off to a flying start on the Lizard THE SOUTH West Coast Path Challenge got off to a flying start in Cornwall last week as more than 40 people took part in the 10-mile walk on the Lizard between Gunwalloe and Lizard Point. Participants were treated to the rare sight of the Cornish Chough and a seal, along with the stunning views on a quintessential Cornish coastal walk. The challenge took in the iconic Kynance Cove, considered one of the

most beautiful beaches in the world and the picturesque harbour of Mullion Cove where walkers were treated to a free drink courtesy of nearby Mullion Cove Hotel. It finished at Lizard Point, the most southerly point of England. Hayley Partridge, Events Officer for the South West Coast Path Association said: “The Lizard Challenge walk went really well and we’re very grateful to all those who supported us by taking

part or donating to our cause. This is without a doubt, a unique and exceptionally beautiful stretch of coastline that has been shaped by time and tide, but we need to take good care of it to ensure we can continue to access the coast. It costs at least £1,000 to maintain just 1 mile of Coast Path and all money raised from the month-long South West Coast Path Challenge will go towards Path improvement projects.”

Under 9’s tackle new rules head on THE DAY after England awkwardly exited the World Cup, a small group of future generation superstars from Helston were embarking on the next stage in their rugby education. Helston U9’s have proved to be a gradual success story since they first started Tag Rugby two years ago and this Sunday saw the team play their first competitive game of full contact rugby against Lankelly Fowey. Singing Seagulls in Helston LOCAL choir favourites The Singing Seagulls will be performing at a Cornish Evening in Helston later this month. Businessman runs half marathon for CLIC Sargent LOCAL businessman Chris Nicholls recently ran a half marathon for charity. The car dealer, who has premises in Long Rock and Helston, entered the Windsor Half Marathon on September 25. Finishing in a time of 2 hours 13 minutes and 13 seconds, Chris has so far raised £893 for CLIC Sargent,

DB10 tour roars in to Aston Martin works THE ASTON Martin DB10 built exclusively for James Bond in the forthcoming movie, Spectre, roared into Newport Pagnell on Saturday as part of a tour. The event saw more than 500 people visit Aston Martin Works to get a close-up view of the exclusive new sports car. DB10 is limited to just ten examples, all of which are used in the highly anticipated new Bond film which premieres on Monday October 26. Stunt driver Mark Higgins, the man behind the wheel for the extreme driving scenes in three Bond films, was also at Saturday’s event to share his fascinating insights into both the making of Spectre and the experience of driving the exclusive DB10. Aside from the rare chance to see the stunning Aston Martin DB10 ‘in the metal’, visitors to the historic Newport Pagnell site were treated to a display of one of the immaculate Aston Martin DB5s used in the previous blockbuster Bond film, Skyfall. Guests also had the chance to put their own

driving skills to the test behind the wheel of an Aston Martin sports car in a Sony PS4 simulator challenge, with prizes for the fastest laps in both the morning and afternoon sessions. Aston Martin Works Managing Director Paul Spires, said: “The whole day was a superb occa-

Former Avengers Jaguar reaches £62,000 at auction THE ORIGINAL Jaguar XJ12-C Broadspeed that appeared in the cult 1970’s TV series, The New Avengers, has sold at auction for £62,000, £50,000 over initial estimates. The iconic Jaguar, driven by secret agent John Steed (played by Patrick Macnee) in the hit series, began life as a pre-production prototype vehicle for the Jaguar. Bought by a private collector at the H&H Classics’ auction the XJ12-C completed its early development and testing work with Jaguar before being

sent to Broadspeed Engineering Ltd. to be fitted with upgraded bodykit including wider bumpers and wheelarches plus bigger wheels and tyres in preparation for filming. Following the series finale in 1977, the car was then sold and passed through the hands of multiple keepers and eventually put up for auction at the NEC Classic Car Show in the early 1990s. After the sale, the famous Jaguar disappeared from public view and remained in hibernation for the next two decades – during which

time the car has been subjected to vandalism and general disrepair. Jaguar Heritage Managing Director Tim Hannig said: “There is no arguing about the desirability of this iconic Jaguar. The XJ12-C Broadspeed still looks fantastic today and although the condition of NWK 60P has deteriorated over the 20 years it’s been locked up, it still shows how the demand for Jaguar Heritage models has increased in recent times along with their values.”

Unprecedented numbers surge to buy ultra low emission cars LATEST new car registration data shows booming demand for plug-in cars as motorists tune in to the cost-saving benefits of ultra low emission motoring. Analysis by Go Ultra Low shows that 20,992 motorists made the leap to plug-in power between January and September this year, bumper growth of 138.5% against 2014. Fuelling the demand is a

greater choice of models, with more than 27 pure electric or plug-in hybrid cars now available in the UK, ranging from highperformance sports cars to capable family runarounds. The data also shows consumer appetite rising rapidly for plug-in hybrid models with demand accelerating ahead 226.5% against 2014 with 14,041 registrations.

Head of Go Ultra Low, Poppy Welch, said: “The growth in plug-in car registrations is excellent news and in line with our expectations. This trend should continue over the course of this year as we know that motorists are keen to achieve maximum miles for the lowest cost, while minimising emissions and environmental impact.”

GEM urges young people to take responsibility for their own road safety ROAD SAFETY organisation GEM Motoring Assist is calling on young people across the UK to take more responsibility for their own safety on the roads. The call follows the release of video footage showing two young men in their speeding car, moments before they both died in a crash. The video, filmed from inside a Renault Clio, shows driver Kyle Careford and his friend Michael Owen speeding along rural roads in Sussex. They crash into a church wall in the village of Rotherfield, where both die instantly. The video, whose contents some may find distressing, can be viewed at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=K39N4PvKQxc GEM chief executive David Williams said: “It is heart-breaking to watch this video and to see two young lives ended instantly. We commend the courage of the young men’s families for supporting the release of the video, which we

hope will challenge anyone who thinks it’s alright to drive fast because they think it’s fun and there are no consequences. “Figures show that one in five drivers will have a crash within six months of passing their driving test. Inexperience means they may not spot hazards that are developing ahead, while their age means they are also more likely to take risks. “So we’re challenging them first of all to get their attitude right, and to ensure they concentrate 100%, develop good observation and anticipate what hazards could be developing ahead of them. “We would like as many young drivers as possible to heed the clear warnings provided by this video, and to do everything they can to reduce the risks they face and the risks they pose – to their passengers and to other road users as well.”

Don’t let the sun set on your driving enjoyment

THE INSTITUTE of Advanced Motorists’ head of driving standards Peter Rodger takes a look at how drivers can better cope with low sun and the effect of dazzle. Read his latest tips to help you through your journey. • You will often see dirt and grime highlighted on your windscreen in low sun, so it’s important that you clean your windows. Use a microfibre cloth to wipe down the inside and make sure your washer bottle is filled with a good quality screen washer liquid. • A sun visor will not necessarily stop low sun from beaming into your windscreen. Keep a pair of sunglasses in your glove box so you can get to them easily. • With the night’s drawing in, ensure you

switch on your headlights before sunset and keep them on for an hour after sunrise so there is no possibility of other road users not seeing you. • Always drive at a steady speed, and if low sun is obstructing what you see ahead slow down – this is particularly important at sharp bends where it’s important to have a clear view of the approaching hazard. • When road surfaces are wet, the dazzle from the sun is increased by the reflection of the sun. Take care when driving on wet road surfaces and ease off the accelerator if necessary. • Look out for vulnerable road users including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, mobility scooter and electric wheelchair users – they are all difficult to spot in low sun conditions. Always take extra precautions at known hazard spots like schools, junctions and crossings. • If you’re affected by low sun, the chances are other drivers are too. Pay attention to vehicles around you and anticipate any sudden manoeuvres. As a rule of thumb you should increase the stopping distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you. • Looking directly at low and sharp rays can affect your vision. If this happens to you, take a break from driving by stopping safely and legally. Peter said: “The key aspect of driving in low sunlight is how it reduces your vision. If you cannot see, you cannot drive the same way. Don’t continue at the same speed if you cannot see where you are going. It might sound obvious, but many drivers will battle on in near zero visibility despite being blinded by the sun. Trust your instincts – slow down and prepare to stop if this happens to you.”

The home side scored once in the first half, Mark Goldsworthy netting shortly before the break after his side had several good chances just off the target which had demonstrated their danger. Phil Cattran added a second for Helston twenty minutes into the second-half but his team then gave Falmouth a glimmer of a chance when they conceded a penalty and Rob Wearne powered it into the back of the net. Helston pushed on chasing a place in the last 16 of the competition and Matt Fox got the final goal with five minutes remaining. In other games involving local sides, Wendron were outplayed by St Austell, losing 8-2, six of the Lilywhites goals coming before the break and Porthleven lost at home to St Dennis in a league fixture, the visitors hitting seven goals with no reply from the Fishermen.

Mullion Golf Club hosted their Ladies Seniors Cup on Friday with ideal playing conditions helping attract a good turnout. The ladies enjoyed a warm and dry afternoon on the course and a closely fought contest was won by Jenny King on 34 points from Margaret Thomas just a single point back. Pamela Stanley rounded out the top three with 30 points. The Daily Mail Foursomes were played on Wednesday with Jill Simmons and Margaret Howells winning with 33pts and the pair progress to the national knock outs. A busy week at the Praa Sands club with several competitions being played. The men played for the Ninnis Cup (scratch) with the Lawrie Fogg Qualifier on the weekend.
