Jake gets a helping hand from Culdrose When five year old Jake from the Isles of Scilly needed medical assistance at the weekend, he was very pleased that not only was he helped to feel better, but he also got the chance to fly in a Royal Navy helicopter. A Search and Rescue Sea King helicopter from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose was scrambled to the Isles of Scilly on Saturday morning (8th March) to transfer a

young boy to the Royal Cornwall Hospital. On the way to St Mary’s, the duty crew from 771 Naval Air Squadron picked up a South West Ambulance Paramedic from Penzance. Five year old Jake, who was suffering from respiratory difficulties, was waiting for them to arrive at St Mary’s airport. The young boy was being looked after by SWASFT and regular 771

Squadron paramedic Wayne Davey. Petty Officer Craig Gabraitis (Aircrewman and trainee paramedic) took over the care of Jake and then the Culdrose crew took him and his mother to Treliske by helicopter. Whilst being monitored closely by the crew and Paramedic Sean Gray, Jake very much enjoyed his first flight in a Search and Rescue helicopter.

Bouncing Basil the Cocker Spaniel has won the hearts of judges and voters in a national competition to become the new furry face of veterinary supplies company Vygon Vet. Basil beat off competition paws-down to win the Vygon Vet Star Pet competition which comes with a year’s worth of food and pet insurance from Vygon Vet. There’s also a £100 donation from vet training providers Improve International, that’s going to The Cornwall and South Devon Boxer Rescue charity, the choice of Basil’s owners. The happy hound from Helston was picked from nearly 70 other cuddly contenders. He will now feature on 2014 exhibition stands and marketing material nationwide on behalf of Vygon Vet, a leading supplier of veterinary products. His delighted owners Emma and Phill Jones, couldn’t believe it when they heard their appealing pooch had won the title. Emma, a paediatric nurse at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Treliske, said: “I saw the contest on Facebook, but never for a moment thought we’d win. I’ve never won anything before and when I first heard I thought it was a hoax.”

Phill, who’s in the Royal Navy Air Squadron 857, based at Culdrose, said: “I was in Afghanistan when Emma put Basil forward and my mates serving out there with me voted for him online because they all know him back home, he’s a very popular dog.” Emma’s competition picture of the 18-month-old cuddly Cocker Spaniel chomping on a carrot, proved a real winner. Online voting put Basil as one of five finalists from nearly 70 entries. The doleful-eyed dog melted the judges’ hearts with his doggie good looks and unusual penchant for root vegetables. Vygon Vet General Manager Chris Kenyon, said: “Basil is a lovely dog, he’s handsome and a real character. The photo of him chewing a carrot was quite quirky and he won us all over.” As part of the winning package, Basil, Emma and Phill were treat-

ed to an all-expenses paid weekend in the Cotswolds where they met Chris and the marketing team at Vygon Vet’s HQ in Wiltshire, and took part in a photo shoot - complete with carrots. The cuddly young canine took it all in his four-legged stride and posed like a real pro. Vygon photographers Mark Buckley and Molly Cox were both amazed at Basil’s impeccable behaviour. Mark said: “They always say never to work with children or animals, but Basil was fantastic.” And Molly added: “He was so wellbehaved and did exactly what Emma asked. He was and is a real star pet!” Back home in Helston, starspaniel Basil returned to his favourite pastimes of ball-chasing, swimming, beach walks, scaring seagulls and of course, chomping on carrots!

The Lizard RNLI lifeboat and Falmouth RNLI lifeboat save six crew from a sinking ship The Lizard’s Tamar class allweather lifeboat Rose and Falmouth’s Severn class allweather lifeboat Richard Cox Scott, launched this morning just after 7am to go to the assistance of an 87 metre (257 feet) long cargo vessel, 11 miles south east of Lizard Point which had a flooded engine room. The Barbados registered vessel Sea Breeze was on passage from Liverpool to Shoreham with a cargo of lime stone when it called Falmouth Coastguard reporting a flooded engine room approximately 11 miles south east of Lizard Point and requesting immediate assistance. The Lizard lifeboat and Falmouth lifeboat were both launched and a Mayday relay was broadcast on VHF channel 16 requesting any vessel in the area to proceed to assist the Sea Breeze. The Lizard lifeboat crew launched within 11 minutes of being paged and arrived on scene in less than 30 minutes. Contact was made with the crew of the Sea Breeze and two volunteer crew of The Lizard lifeboat

were put onboard the casualty vessel with an RNLI pump. When the rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose arrived on scene they also placed a navy pump onboard the ship. Shortly afterwards the Falmouth lifeboat arrived on scene and placed one volunteer crew member and their RNLI pump onboard. The ships engine room was badly flooded and it was quickly evident that the pumps were unable to cope with ingress of water. As the Sea Breeze was now lying low in the water it was considered too dangerous for the crew and RNLI volunteers to remain onboard. The Falmouth lifeboat took off all the ship’s crew and RNLI crew members. The captain of the Sea Breeze was airlifted off the Falmouth lifeboat onto The Lizard lifeboat due to the sea swell, but later transferred onto a naval vessel HMS Tyne, that was on scene having responded to the Mayday call for assistance. The Falmouth lifeboat then returned to Falmouth with five members of the ship’s crew and the two Lizard lifeboat crew and

all three pumps and later The Lizard lifeboat was stood down and returned to station. A salvage tug Vortex from Falmouth has been on scene all afternoon and HMS Tyne has been standing by the Sea Breeze. Falmouth Coastguard are currently dealing with the vessel and broadcasting safety messages to all shipping in the area making them aware of the situation. The Lizard lifeboat Coxswain Andrew Putt said ‘Conditions on scene were good. Although there was a moderate swell we were able to get alongside the casualty very quickly and transfer a pump and two of our crew onboard. Unfortunately there was alot of water in the engine room and the three pumps couldn’t cope. It was far too dangerous to leave the crew onboard. Sponsorship needed to help man run London Marathon for Arthritis Care A Helston man running the London Marathon is looking for sponsorship and donations to help him make a donation to a charity close to his heart. Jason Saunders is running the marathon on Sunday 13th April in aid of Arthritis Care, a condition that members of his family have suffered from for years and says, “I felt this was my part to contribute to help them and many others who suffer.â€? Arthritis affects over 10 million people in the UK and Arthritis Care is working to raise to raise the awareness of the occurrence on arthritis in young people as over 27,000 children and young people are also affected. Jason has run the Marathon before, in the early 2000’s for cancer charities and so is confident of doing well again and has been hard in training getting ready for the big event. He needs to raise a minimum of ÂŁ1800 sponsorship in return for his place in the marathon and you can donate through the website and searching for Jason.

Merlin 2 ‘tested to the max’ during first visit to type 23 frigate A Merlin Mk 2 has set down on the deck of HMS Lancaster, marking the very first time the Fleet Air Arm’s new submarine hunter has joined a frigate on which it will ride into battle. The Merlin Mk 2 is the Navy’s new-and-improved version of the world’s leading anti-submarine helicopter, conducting its initial trials with the Royal Navy’s first line of defence against the threat from underwater foes: the Type 23 frigate. The Merlin has been in service with the Royal Navy for more than a decade, but is in the middle of a £750m revamp which will see the fleet of helicopters, all based at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall, ready to take the fight to submarines until the end of the 2020s. Although it looks almost identical outwardly, inside the Mk 2 Merlin is an entirely different beast, fitted with a state-of-theart touch screen, integrated command system for both flying and fighting. In its normal configuration, the rear of the helicopter is a mini operations room that uses numerous sensors to detect and identify both submarines and ships on the

surface. Those hi-tech consoles can also be quickly removed by Merlin engineers to convert it into a troop carrier or flying ambulance. For now, Lancaster is focusing on the basics of working with the new helicopter in the Channel. So once the helicopter from 829 Naval Air Squadron – which supplies Type 23 frigates with Merlin’s, aircrew and engineers for operations around the world – was embarked, numerous exercises began. Crash on deck exercises were practised that run out the ship’s emergency response organisation, while the Merlin conducted numerous sorties and secondary duties, such as winching a casualty from the frigate’s forecastle. “I am very proud to be the first to operate a Merlin Mk 2 from a Type 23 Frigate,” said Lt Cdr Simon ‘Stevo’ Stevenson, 01 Flight Commander. “It is an exciting time and I am looking forward to working together with HMS Lancaster, testing its capabilities to the max. This short embarkation represents another major step forward of the integration of a vastly capable and complex aircraft into the Royal Navy, ensuring we

remain at the forefront of antisurface and sub-surface warfare.” For the Commanding Officer of the Portsmouth-based warship – which was instrumental in trials helping the original Merlin into service nearly 15 years ago – the arrival of the ‘souped-up’ helicopter is a real bonus to Frigate operations. “The new Merlin is a huge step forward in capability for the Royal Navy and Lancaster is very privileged to be part of these trials,” said Commander Peter Laughton. “In the weeks to come we will be working very closely with Merlin Mk 2 and her crew to ensure its successful introduction into frontline service.” Two of the Royal Navy’s four Merlin squadrons have now converted to the upgraded helicopter, which has deployed overseas for the first time (an anti-submarine exercise off Norway). The biggest test yet for the new Merlin will be a huge submarine hunt led by HMS Illustrious in June, when eight Mk 2’s are lined up to join the veteran carrier for Exercise Deep Blue in the Atlantic.

Shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes across Cornwall have received confirmation this week that their business rates will be £1,000 less this year. 3,877 businesses in Cornwall have so far been identified as eligible for the scheme which affects retailers with a rateable value of £50,000 or less with around £3,383,128 of business rate rebates set to be confirmed. Cornwall Council has taken up the Government’s offer, announced in the Autumn statement last December, which gives local authorities the option of providing rate relief of up to £1,000 to all occupied retail properties with a rateable value of £50,000 or less for both 2014/15 and 2015/16. Richard Parish of David Parish Menswear in Launceston, which is one of the small businesses set to benefit from the rebate scheme, said: "This rebate is, of course, very welcome but we need to see a complete overhaul of the business rating system if high street retailers are to have any chance of sur-

vival and if new businesses are to be encouraged to set up and to flourish. We, along with other Cornish small businesses, have really suffered in the recession yet we are still expected to pay the high business rates set during more buoyant economic times. In addition, the growth in online shopping coupled with the proliferation of out of town retail outlets has created additional challenges for traditional high streets. In their first season at the club The Blues have had no easy passage to the final having had to overcome the likes of Charlestown Pumas and Looe Town both of whom are currently top their respective leagues. Proud team Coaches Charlie Young and Ross Wara have nothing but praise for their squad who give everything they have both in training and on match days. Charlie commented 'When former coach Danny Everard gave me the chance to take over as The Blues manager I did not hesitate to accept given the players are such hardworking and dedicated bunch of lads. Much of this seasons success is down to the earlier groundwork completed by Danny'. Kobayashi hails Caterham Seven 620 R as “pure car” Caterham F1 Team new boy, Kamui Kobayashi, warmed up for the first Grand Prix of the season in Australia by taking his first ever drive in the legendary Caterham Seven. The Japanese didn’t do things by halves either – his first ever Seven drive was at the wheel of the most powerful production Seven ever built and the ultimate incarnation of Caterham’s ethos of ‘accessible fun’, the raucous 620 R. With 310bhp, a top speed of 155mph and a 0-60mph time of less than 2.8 seconds, the 620 R made its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year and was put through its paces by F1 fan favourite Kobayashi at Silverstone just before he travelled to Melbourne. A video documenting Kobayashi’s first Seven drive and capturing his thoughts on the iconic British sportscar has been released today and can be seen at It certainly made an impression on the 27-year old, who said: “For me, this is a pure car; everything else is just transportation. “Normally, with a new car, it takes a few laps to understand it; with this car,

Alfa Romeo 4C is the FIA WTCC safety car The Alfa Romeo 4C was chosen by Eurosport Events as the Safety Car of the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) for the entire 2014 season. The multi award-winning coupé will be finished in a special livery and will be on the grid for every World Touring Car Championship race during the 2014 season, beginning with the Moulay El Hassan Circuit of Marrakech (Morocco) on 12 and 13 April. The decision is a result of the Alfa Romeo 4C being named “Most Beautiful Car of 2013” at the 29th International Automobile Festival of Paris. The compact supercar was the winner of the poll organised, in partnership with the International Automobile Festival (IAF), on Eurosport’s international website network. Eurosport produces and promotes the

FIA WTCC through its Eurosport Events division. Designed by Alfa Romeo engineers and built at the Maserati plant in Modena, the Alfa Romeo 4C is the brand's modern icon and represents the essential sportiness embedded in the 'Alfa Romeo DNA': performance and technical excellence for maximum driving pleasure combined with a breath-taking style. The mid-engined, rearwheel-drive, two-seater coupé is a true, uncompromised driving machine that delivers its best on the track, where speed, short braking distances and transverse acceleration are essential in achieving first-rate performance times: 0 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds, 160mph top speed, 1.2g of deceleration force and lateral acceleration forces in excess of 1.1g. This is thanks to an optimum weight distri-

bution – 40:60 front to rear – and its ultra-lightweight construction – comprised largely of carbon fibre, aluminium and SMC – which results in a dry weight of just 895 kg. The first-rate performance is also due to the combination of the new 240hp 1750 Turbo Petrol engine with the latestgeneration 'Alfa TCT' dry twin

clutch transmission and the advanced Alfa DNA selector with the new Race mode. The all-aluminium engine, complete with direct injection and a high-performance turbo charger, sets new power and torque records for the segment, at over 137hp per litre and 200Nm per litre respectively.

The Alfa Romeo supercar is therefore the perfect car to play the role of 'Safety Car' in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), the international competition for production-derived saloon cars. Produced and promoted since 2005 by Eurosport Events, the FIA WTCC consists

of 12 stages across four continents in 2014. In keeping with tradition, the season will wind up in Macao at the Da Guia circuit on 16 November. All 24 races will be broadcast live by the Eurosport and Eurosport 2 channels.

Appeal for landlord tax concessions The Residential Landlords Association (RLA) is appealing to the Chancellor and political parties to adapt this year’s Budget, along with any future legislation, to help the individual private landlords who make up 90 per cent of those in the private rental sector. In light of the current era of ‘Generation Rent’, in which one in five households are expected to be in the private rented sector by 2016, RLA Chairman Alan Ward is arguing that in order to secure the homes needed by the UK, the potential of small scale landlords should be untapped. In its Budget submission, the RLA is asking for measures which will allow landlords to develop on plots of vacant public sector land which would be too

small to interest institutional developers. Furthermore, in order to improve standards in the sector, which often comes under fire for rogue landlords providing low quality housing, the RLA are calling for tax reforms. They argue that should renting a property be treated as trading activity with incentives for investment, then standards would consequently improve. Suggestions have been voiced in relation to individual landlords being permitted to pool their developments together in order to reach a £10 million valuation which would enable them to collectively qualify for the Governments’ housing guarantees scheme. The RLA did not limit their campaigning merely to this

year’s Budget. They also called for all political parties to agree not to restrict rents via rent controls or index linking rents, claiming that this would cause irreversible damage to the sector. RLA chairman Alan Ward said: ‘Whilst the private rented sector is the only housing sector to be growing, much more action is needed to boost the supply and quality of homes available to rent and keep rent levels down. Our recommendations would help unlock the enormous potential for the army of individuals who rent out property to expand and create more homes and through this they will be feeding more resources back to the Treasury.’

Government to consider fast track evictions Government plans may be afoot to introduce measures for speeding up eviction, in the hope that this will encourage potential landlords to join the sector. Landlord Assist, the tenant eviction and rent recovery firm, are showing their support for plans which may see evictions fast-tracked, after concerns that lengthy court cases may lead to landlords being out of pocket, with possession claims often taking 6-12 months. Therefore, troublesome ten-

ants can be costly, potentially damaging the landlords credit rating due to a lack of rental income causing them to fall behind on their mortgage. However, it has been reported that landlords and housing charities are set to attend a government working group in order to discuss the options in relation to speeding up the eviction process in the private rental sector. Managing Director at Landlord Assist, Graham Kinnear, feels that such a move will have benefits for

landlords and tenants alike, the former welcoming the chance to be rid of antisocial and uncooperative tenants, whilst the latter will benefit from the expanse of new properties vacated by nuisance tenants. Kinnear said: ‘We do not feel that there is a real need to alter the grounds of securing a vacant possession or the methods by which a landlord can gain possession of their property. What we would like to see is a swifter possession service which will reunite the land-

lord with their property in a timelier manner. This will help to minimise the losses incurred by many landlords and may even encourage further landlords to enter the market place, which would help to address the current housing shortage in the UK. At the same time introducing a swifter eviction process will also support decent tenants looking for rented accommodation as they will be able to replace troublesome tenants much quicker than is currently the case.’
