Lizard lifeboat crew member to take part in a single-handed challenge Lizard lifeboat crew member Simon Fayers is taking part in the Jester Baltimore Challenge, a single handed yacht race from Plymouth to Baltimore, Republic of Ireland. Simon will then sail to a position just off the Continental shelf, a round trip of almost 900 nautical miles in his 26ft yacht before returning to the Helford River via Brest, France. Simon, 53, has been a member of the lifeboat crew for over 7 years and is an experienced sailor who owns the 26ft yacht ‘Shebeca’ which is moored in the Helford River. He has taken part in a number of single-handed yacht races but on this occasion he will be completing his challenge without the use of any electronic navigational aids he will be attempting to navigate by only using a sextant and compass. He is currently teaching himself how to use the sextant. This challenge starts at Plymouth on Sunday 14 June. Simon is hoping to complete the challenge in less than 10 days and during the trip will be celebrating his 54th birthday.
Simon has decided to use this fantastic challenge to raise funds for both The Lizard lifeboat station and also the Fishermen’s Mission, two very worthy charity’s that ensure the safety and wellbeing of seafarers. I always thought it would be really good to learn how to navigate using only a sextant and this challenge was what spurred me on. As a lifeboat crew member we get called to yacht’s which have been disabled and are unable to use their electronic navigational aids. I think it is great to be able to use just the basics of a sextant, compass and chart’. Continued on page 16

Coverack opens gardens for Children's Hospices Coverack Horticultural Society is hosting its 9th Annual Open Gardens Day on Sunday, 7th June from 12noon to 5pm. There are a number of gardens to explore and enjoy in and around the village and returning visitors will love rambling through the garden tour in June instead of August when the gardens are at their prettiest. The gardens are all delightful in their individual, diverse styles, while retaining an overall unique charm of 'Cornishness'. Coverack is sheltered from frost and harsh winds, creating a micro-climate where tender, exotic palms, echium, agave and agapanthus thrive and flourish - one garden path winds down enchanting terraces to the water's edge, with sheltered areas and running water, creating an ambience of meditation and calm and another is a gardener's treasure trove with an exceptional collection of specimen plants. Where one is wild, another organised and immaculately tended. There's a stunning garden dating back to 1939 with protea from South Africa, a fish pond and original Cornish apple trees and close to the harbour is a walled courtyard which is proud to be the smallest garden in Coverack! And en route to the hamlet of Ponsongath is Terence Coventry's sculpture garden, dis-
playing the magnificent work of the internationally renowned sculptor, in nature's wild and unconfined 'gallery'. Entry to the gardens is £3 for adults and accompanying children under 16 and well behaved dogs are free. Every penny raised is being donated to Children's Hospice South West, a charity that cares for and enhances short and precious lives by providing the only hospices in the South West for children with life-limiting illnesses, ensuring support for the children and their families having to cope in the most heartbreaking of situations. To start the tour, a plan of the gardens and guides are on sale from the marquee on the grassy area opposite North Corner car park from 12 noon until 5pm. Coverack's gardens promise a delightful experience and there will be a produce stall and no day out in Cornwall wouldn't be complete without a Cream tea, available from St. Peter's Hall. To reach the village, take the B3294 from Helston and follow the signs. Gloria Knight, Chairman of the Horticultural Society added "We really hope that people will enjoy visiting the gardens, be inspired to take home some ideas and help us to support Children's Hospice South West'.

Cornwall Council invites the public to visit the Council stand at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show Are you planning to visit this year’s Royal Cornwall Show on 4, 5, and 6 June? If so visit the Cornwall Council stand where you can find out about the Case for Cornwall as well as information about a range of other Council services. Each year public spending in Cornwall amounts to about £4.3 billion, however the majority of this spending is either carried out by the Government or by other organisations – with little local choice on how it is spent. The Council are seeking new powers and freedoms from the Government so they have greater control over the decisions which affect Cornwall. They want local residents to help shape the final proposals to submit to the Government in July and are currently holding a series of public consultation events to give people the chance to find out more and have their say. One of these events is taking place at the Royal Cornwall Show where Council Leader John Pollard and other members
of the Council’s Cabinet will be at the Council Pavilion on Stand 92 to provide information about the Case for Cornwall and answer any questions. You will also have the opportunity to give them your views on the future of Libraries and One Stop Shops and have the chance to find out more about their adoption and fostering services. There will also be displays from the Road Safety team, with advice on how to stay safe on our roads; information from the Communities and Devolution team on how they are working with local communities and partners, and advice on how to protect your home from flooding. You will also be able to learn some simple Cornish phrases from the Cornish Language Partnership, visit a display of electric vehicles, and talk to officers from the Building Control service. So why not go along and join them on stand 92 and find out what Cornwall Council is doing for you.

Beauty salon celebrates third birthday in business There were giggles and cake galore as a holistic massage and beauty salon celebrated its third birthday in business this week. The owners of Pure Bliss in Mullion handed out slices of a specially-made cake to clients throughout the day. The salon was established in 2012 by owner-therapists Melanie Walters and Christine Morey, who decided to set up their own business to offer more choice to local people. Melanie said: “The last three years have been hard work but it’s been fantastic and we’ve had great fun along the way. “We started off by offering just a small number of beauty services but expanded the range as more and more clients visited the salon. We’re grateful that the people of Mullion have made us to feel part of the community and by way of thanks, we try to do our bit for local charities.” Since opening the salon the therapists have raised more than £1000 for local good causes, by hosting coffee
mornings, organising the annual Christmas market and donating gift vouchers for charity auctions and raffles. Beneficiaries include The Lizard Lifeboat, Macmillan Cancer support and the local cricket club, among many more. The community-driven owners also try to help other businesses in the area by using as many local suppliers as possible, such as stocking a beauty product range manufactured by a skincare company based in St Keverne. The salon offers a range of treatments including aro-
matherapy massages, reflexology, facials, manicures, pedicures and wax treatments. Culdrose Top Gun finds hidden talent A young Air Engineering Technician (AET) has discovered a winning-way on the rifle range, which has scooped him a large haul of cups and trophies at the recent Naval Air Command Operational Shooting Competition (NACOSC). Known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hinderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Haulâ&#x20AC;? - AET Daniel Hinder who normally maintains Merlin helicopters on 829 Naval Air Squadron, at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose is rightly proud of his first time achievement. competing and range-days behind them. All the shoots are with over 20 kgs of weighted webbing, body armour, helmet, eye protection and contact gloves plus a service rifle. As well as a physical component of moving between distances at speed and the complications of changing points of aim at different ranges, whilst accounting for environmental effects such as wind and rain. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Having won almost everything at this event, I am looking to compete for the Queens Medal, which is the highest accolade for a Naval Shooter. I will have to compete in the Inter Services up against the best the Army, Air Force and the whole armed forces can muster,â&#x20AC;? continued Daniel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be honest itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all a bit of a surprise to me, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m happy to see where this journey takes me.â&#x20AC;? Seahawk gunners raring to go HMS Seahawk Field Gun Crew head-off to Portsmouth for the annual Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charities Competition in good spirit, after their final public run in front of personnel from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose. Clocking a cracking time of 1 minute 24 seconds on their final run at the Fleet Air Armâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cornish base they depart for this closely fought competition in a buoyant mood, confident they can compete amongst the best. Long hours spent training together, exhausting sessions in the gym and repetitive drills on the track producing a closeknit crew, that are raring to get to grips with the opposition. Lieutenant Commander JP Moran, HMS Seahawk Field Gun Officer said: "1.24 is the fastest time a crew has left here for Collingwood. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been lucky with the weather, we havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t missed a day of training and fitness levels are high. Pride

The Brickwoods competition simulates the drills undertaken to bring a naval field gun into action during the march to Ladysmith. The main characters are the family members of Grandfather Abel Merryweather,
whom they think as deceased, allowing them to get control of his personal things. The family will do anything to get their hands on the modest Estate. But they are all in for a SHOCK! The characters allow the actors to get to grips with Grandfather’s miserable, grasping relatives! “IT WILL BE ALRIGHT ON THE NIGHT” is a comedy written by Stella Wyn James, and is an hilarious farce, where the Producer is rehearsing their Dress Rehearsal for the following day’s performance. Pirate ship gets Culdrose refit A popular play area at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose has been past ‘fit for use’ by the kids from ‘Helitots’, the Air Station’s children’s day nursery. The play area, in the shape of a Pirate ship has slides, ropes and nets, which for the youngsters at Culdrose open up a whole world of adventures for exploring and creating imaginative scenarios. “Having the Pirate Ship refitted and refurbished has made a big difference to us,” said Steph Richards, manager of Helitots. “It gives us an extra play area for the children. It's a very popular place with everyone, they all want to explore. Having a pirate ship on the naval base is great fun, the children like to think it's what their mummy's and daddy's do.” Over the years, the wooden structure has stood the ravages of hundreds of tiny hands and feet across its decks and rigging. Situated conveniently at the rear of the Wardroom, the play area proves itself extremely popular to all base’s sailors with dependants. However, has recently started to show its age and a little bit of TLC (tender loving care) was required. To the rescue came The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, who happily gave a grant of £4,306.68 for its restoration. Anne Carr, Head of Grants at the charity said: “We were pleased to help with funds to repair this play area at RNAS Culdrose, especially as it has proven very popular with all children from across the base.” She added: “At the Charity, we endeavour to support our sailors and marines and their families. Sometimes it’s just simple things, like funding repairs and improvements for recreational assets, such as this pirate ship used by
so many children, which help ease the stress and pressure that can accompany life in the Service. We truly hope all these ‘young pirates and princess’ will enjoy having their ship back." Stanley, a member of RNAS Culdrose’s ‘Helitots’ has a different take on it, “I'm really glad the Pirate ship's been mended, we can keep the crocodiles away now!" The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) exist to support Sailors, Marines and their families, for life. As strategic partner charity of the Royal Navy, RNRMC delivers support to – and advocates for – those in need. It does this through its grants to benevolence charities, dependants after bereavement and the serving community, through improvements to amenities and by funding projects that improve efficiency, morale and welfare. Other projects the charity has funded at RNAS Culdrose include £35,000 worth of improvements to the Station Briefing Facility/Cinema and additionally assisting in the cost of training ASA Level 2 teachers for the Air Station’s young swimmers club.

Banger season continues to thrill with metal bending Meet The third meeting at West Cornwall Motor Racing in Gweek was packed full of every nudge, spin, rollover and metal bending hit that you would hope to see and the perfect day for the racing family to pay tribute to 643 Kier Millar. Gold bumpers, many carrying the young driver’s name and race number, were driven onto the track at the start of the meeting as a sign of respect from the furthest track in the UK. A good line-up of top drivers in both banger classes ensured that the pace was fast and the hits were hard. In the Small bangers 269 Matt Larvan & 81 Rob Johns were indestructible and ensured no car was left with a good scraping of paint, a hard nudge or a good whack. Both classes saw the first rollovers of the season. Unlimited banger 99 Bam Spooner, with the aid of 131 Steve Cock, took the lead with his roll over in the first heat and 205 Matt Cottle provided the first roll over for the small bangers. In the Rod Classes the energy was high as 534 Kev Roberts, 303 Roo Jumunjy and 428 James MRB Bennetts
ensured every finish was tight with 534 Kev Roberts dominating the top slot. In the Cornish Rods it was 88 Lewis Gilbert that started the day with a win but it was also his last race of the day and it was left to 808 Lewis Gilbert, 131 Nick Diment and 229 Jonny Kind to set the pace, 808 Lewis Gilbert finishing the remaining three heats in first place. The Junior Micra’s were on form and although there were a few moments that caused a sharp intake of breath they all raced to a standard that would challenge some of the adult drivers. 837 Barnabie Carlton-Barnes and 899 Zack Thorpe delivered some exciting close finishes with 837 just coming across the line to win all four of his heats. 46 Jason Read and 50/50 Andrew Trewin were joined by 12 Pork and new driver 146 Mike Plant in the Grass Stox. 46 Jason Read ended the day with a full list of wins. The next meeting will be taking place on Sunday June 14th and you can find the track at TR12 7AB in Gweek.
