Culdrose hands over Search and Rescue baton along with Ace of Clubs badge THE Royal Navy was stood down from its role in saving the lives of people around Cornwall after 40 years carrying out the role. The baton was officially passed on to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency contractor Bristow Helicopters, who will be based at Newquay airport. Since 1974, 771 Squadron has delivered search and rescue coverage across the Southwest 24 hours a day. At the handover, the Commanding Officer of 771 Naval Air Squadron, Lieutenant Commander Dick Calhaem said: “I am immensely proud to command this outstanding squadron on this the final day of search and rescue operations. 771 Naval Air Squadron has made a huge impact during the past 40 years and the personnel, and their famous ‘Ace of Clubs’ helicopters will always have a place in the hearts of the population of Cornwall and
the Isles of Scilly. The squadron will never be forgotten for its efforts and the innumerable lives saved.” To ensure a smooth handover, 771 personnel have been liaising with the new Bristow Helicopter team at Newquay, many of whom have been based on 771 themselves. Such are the strong ties, that 771

End of an era as a naval legend stands down IT was the end of an era, but to new beginnings as the RNAS Culdrose 771 Squadron passed the Search and Rescue baton to a contractor based at Newquay airport last week. The helicopter squadron has been saving lives for as long as I have been alive; first delivering rescue operations in 1974. The service they have provided has impacted many people in Cornwall, having carried out more than 9,000 operations and saving an estimated 15,000 lives. Originally using Wessex helicopters, the Sea King took over in 1988 and have been a familiar and welcome sight
to people in distress ever since. It is with sadness that we say goodbye to these legends of the skies who have flown with honour, but times change and the ageing Sea Kings have now been stood down to make way for new Agusta Westland and Sikorsky helicopters. A new private contractor, Bristow Helicopters, will be delivering UK Search and Rescue operations on behalf of HM Coastguard with state-ofthe-art helicopters equipped with the latest technology including night vision, mission management and increased onboard medical capabilities.
The new coastguard crews are almost entirely former 771 squadron personnel to ensure continuity and maintain a high quality service. However, the famous red and grey ‘Ace of Clubs’ Sea King helicopters will always have a place in the hearts of the population of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The squadron will never be forgotten for its efforts and the innumerable lives they saved and I would like to take a moment to thank everyone involved in the operation over the last 40 years.

Don’t let wet weather rain on your parade, says the IAM With wet weather continuing to engulf the UK, the Institute of Advanced Motorists’ (IAM) director of standards, Mark Lewis, looks at how drivers can best prepare for driving in heavy rain. 1. Before setting off, check for any weather alerts, traffic updates or planned road closures that may affect your journey. Only travel in extreme adverse weather conditions if it is really necessary. 2. Check lights and windscreen wiper blades are clean and working properly. Also check the tyre pressure and tread depth to ensure the best possible grip on wet surfaces. 3. Plan your route in advance and try to avoid any roads that are prone to flooding, even if it extends your journey. 4. Heavy rain often leads to dam-
aged road surfaces and puddles can hide deep potholes – look for clues such as loose chunks of tarmac. 5. In heavy rain, don’t forget to switch on your dipped headlights so other motorists can see you easily. Reduce your speed when travelling in the rain to decrease your stopping distance. This will also help you pass through large puddles and potholes smoothly, without spraying other road users or risking aquaplaning. 6. Torrential rain may interfere with the electrics of a vehicle causing a breakdown. Prepare for the worst by keeping your mobile phone charged and with the number of your breakdown service provider already saved on it. While you wait for help keep your bonnet closed as soaking the engine will only make it worse.

30,000 vehicle thefts a year ‘not worthy’ of police investigation THE THEFT of as many as 30,000 vehicle thefts a year, worth £229 million, are not even investigated by police according to new research. Data from 43 of 45 UK police forces from the last six years shows that, of the estimated 117,000 cars a year stolen in the UK, 59,000 are lost entirely and half of these are deemed not worthy of police investigation potentially because of swinging cuts to police budgets. The hardest hit are businesses, because police often classify the taking of fleet or courtesy cars a ‘civil crime’ and will not automatically open a case if a car is thought to have gone missing. Last year, a report revealed that, on average, a quarter of vehicle theft-related crimes in 2013 were not attended to by police. The new research, by Accident Exchange and its motor fraud
investigation team, APU, found that an estimated 700,000 theftrelated car crimes took place between 2009 and 2014. Neil Thomas, APU’s Director of Investigative Services, said: “If a vehicle owned by a business rather than an individual, such as a fleet vehicle or garage courtesy car, goes missing, frequently the police tend to consider it a civil crime because the business has effectively allowed someone the use of that car. Increasing pressure on police forces in the form of budget cuts and overstretched resources means not enough time can be dedicated to the investigation and retrieval of stolen vehicles. The monetary value of the lost vehicles can only be described as the tip of the iceberg, as many recovered vehicles are found damaged or burnt out and subsequently written off. In reality, the loss figure is likely to be higher still.”

However Lizard FC A and Helston RBL A are making sure its not just a two horse race as both teams had good victories last week; Lizard FC A defeating Helston RFC A 8-1 and Helston RBL A a 7-2 win over Mullion FC. Division Four Queens Arms A lead the division after a 6-3 win over Out of the Blue B and their B team are close behind after a 5-4 win over Out of the Blue A. Martin Bray, Rob Green and Ben Lugg all won for the Wheel Inn as they defeated Lizard Kissoffs 5-4. The league would like to pass on their condolences to family and friends of Ron Poore who sadly passed away just before Christmas. First shot of the year at Mullion drops straight into the cup as Mark Twynham hits hole in one Mullion Golf Club caterer Mark Twynham was the first person in 2016 to hit a ball from the 1st tee which resulted in a hole in one. This could be a first in the country as not many clubs have a par 3 as their first hole, and not many ‘Aces’ scored by the first player on the tee this year. The George Thomas competition was played with a keen group of golfers braving the appalling weather of gale force winds, driving rain and the very toughest of condition to play the first competition of the New Year. Celebrations continued in the club house with Mark buying everyone the customary first drink of the year with his impressive hole in one achievement. The traditional New Year’s Day ‘Putters off the Tee’ was held in very wet and windy conditions, with seven men and one lady taking part, and was won by Scott Willett. A Triathlon was held the same day and was won by Ronnie Barr. On Saturday the Ladies play Round One of their Winter League (Medal) and on Sunday the Men play for their Monthly Medal. On Wednesday the Ladies play in the morning and there is the Seniors Monthly Medal in the afternoon.
