Titus Coan tells his adventurous story of his missionary life and labors in Patagonia (now predominantly Argentina) while living with a savage tribe. He paints a vivid picture of the land, indigenous people and their culture in the early 1800's. Book was written by him in his later life mostly from his journals but also contains add-ons of subsequent missionary efforts in the area as well. The Introduction written by Rev. Henry M. Field is in itself a short revealing biography into the life of Titus Coan, the man, missionary and explorer who later spent the rest of his life ministering to native Hawaiians in the Islands.
