HELPING SERVICES FOR

NORTHEAST IOWA

www.helpingservices.org

What your donation will be used for When you handed that shivering volunteer your dollars, you were handing out help. How? Your donation allows Helping Services to keep services available for those who want and need them. While we do receive funding from other sources, Holiday Lights plays a big part in filling in the gaps. It’s a fundraiser that helps keep our cash flowing and our volunteers and staff working to help others: Domestic and Sexual Abuse Advocacy • Safe homes, support groups and advocacy for adult and child victims of domestic or sexual abuse. • 24/7 help by calling the Crisis Line, 1-800-383-2988, for victims or anyone with questions about domestic or sexual abuse of adults or children. • Training and presentations on recognizing and preventing abuse.

Family Support • Research-based classes for adults to learn stress management and healthy child development. • School programming for children about trust, their bodies, and other topics to prevent abuse. • Coalition of neighbors to create safe environments for children.

Substance Abuse Prevention • Resources to reinforce positive decision-making about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. • Trainings for alcohol servers and sellers. • Coalition of neighbors positively changing the local attitude towards substance abuse.

Youth Mentoring • Role models for youth to develop life skills (self-esteem, decision-making, social skills). • Volunteer opportunity for adults to become a trusted person in a youth’s life. • Coordinated activities, trainings and events for youth and adults enrolled in mentoring.

Thank you for being part of all this. 1

Holiday Greetings from David Runyon I am excited that you have joined us for the eighth season of Holiday Lights. As you drive through, I hope you see the level of community involvement from local businesses and organizations. I want to thank all these volunteers and sponsors. Some have been with us from the beginning and new ones are joining us for the first time. The Lights are our wish to you: that your holiday season is full of joy and delight. And, the lights are a way for you to support critical work with children and families throughout northeast Iowa. The smiles you give us as we meet you at the gate, hand you a program, and receive your donation, all these things remind us of the importance of community support for the individuals and families that are facing challenging times. I want to wish you a very merry and blessed Christmas season, and thank you for supporting the work of Helping Services for Northeast Iowa. David Runyon, Executive Director End of Year Tax-Deductible Donation The tax year is coming to a close. While we know it isn’t the driving force for your philanthropy, making a charitable gift does have tax benefits. Conveniently make a gift online to Helping Services and receive an instant receipt for your taxes. In addition, you will get a warm fuzzy feeling knowing you’ve helped sponsor a parenting class, provided a positive role model for a youth, or gave a victim of abuse a safe place to stay for a night. www.helpingservices.org/donate Do you remember seeing our ad? Help us be better stewards of our advertising budget. Each year we try to find effective ways to invite everyone to visit the Lights.
