...a local Interior Designer... Debrah Hyder, born and raised in Hamblen County, is a 1979 graduate of UT with a degree in Interior Design. Debrah has been the president of Interspace Design, Inc., a design firm she started with her sister, since 1980. Over the past 27 years Debrah has had the opportunity to help many clients, both residential and commercial. Debrah has been married to Rex W. (Bill) Hyder, Jr. for 20 years, and they have one son, Will, who is 15 years old. When Debrah designed and built her home in 1992, her goal was to make it casual yet also reflect her designer needs. She says she supposes you would describe the final result as “casual elegance.”

The kitchen, Debrahʼs latest remodel project, features tile floors, granite counter tops, stainless steel and black appliances... a round antique oak table sits in the eat-in kitchen, with striped chair pads to match the adjacent wicker seating as well as the gold with fruit and vegetable print wall coverings. The dining room walls are covered in a striking red damask wall covering, with gold and navy blue accents in the drapery, wall art and table runner. Have a design project and need help? Debrah keeps her husband and sonʼs masculinity in mind when choosing colors and fabrics... even her bathrooms are not only gracious and beautiful but their deep, rich colors are sure to not only make this home a designerʼs delight but also a warm and inviting home for all. Bill, Debrahʼs husband, spends most of his time at the Western Auto on N. Cumberland which has been the family business for 53 years. While Debrah enjoys creating beautiful inner spaces, Bill and their son Will prefer to restore old cars, to name a few, a 1932 Roadster and a 1979 Ford Fairmont Futura that Will, at the ripe old age of 14, put the motor in all by himself. You can see photos of Bill and Will and their beloved cars on pages 50 and 51.

Another recent remodel is the master bath. Debrah, finally after all these years, installed the much coveted whirlpool tub, which is just the right touch to complete this beautiful master bath.

Celebrates 15 Years!

Left to right: Kelly Stooksberry, Nancy Wells, Kelley Hinsley, and Cathy Scott.

In February 1974, Kelley Hinsley had just graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law when he landed a job with Morristown Attorney, Ralph H. “Buddy” Noe, Jr. Attorney Buddy Noe’s real estate and title practice had grown and help was needed, even from a young law graduate who had never “searched a title,” or prepared a deed, or had any connection to Hamblen County. Thirty three years later, the opportunity given to young Kelley proved to be the first of a long series of fortunate events that laid the foundation for today’s success of Heartland Title Services, Inc., a local title insurance agency and real estate closing business. On October 8, 1974, Buddy needed an additional secretary. Lynn Elkins of the Tennessee Vocational School provided an unusually strong recommendation of one young lady, whom she described as maybe “the best student I’ve ever had.” Shortly thereafter, Buddy introduced Nancy Banks Wells to the office as our new number two secretary. This would prove to be the second very fortunate event for young Kelley. Nancy began working with Kelley, first as secretary, and then over the course of thirty-two years, as Vice President and Manager of Operations at Heartland Title. Nancy’s dedication to excellence, her knowledge and characPage 12

ter, as well as her dedication to client service, has been crucial in the development of Heartland’s reputation and success. Kelley and Nancy made a bold decision in 1992 to create Heartland Title and this August, they will celebrate the company’s fifteenth anniversary. The changes in the mortgage lending industry in the 1980’s led to a need for a local title agency fully capable of responding professionally to the needs of the growing real-estate lending industry. Heartland Title opened for business behind First Tennessee Bank on Hickey Street. Soon the need for more space resulted in moves to a Morris Blvd., location, and finally to the former Kingdom Hall building at the corner of Country Club Drive and East Economy Road overlooking the Morristown Plaza. Heartland’s plans to open a Dandridge office this Spring. Heartland performs several functions. First, it orders from Kelley’s law office detailed title examinations of the land records to determine the status of the seller’s title. If there are problems with title ownership, the lawyer recommends how the defects can be “cleared.” Once good title is established, Heartland organizes the closing, where the buyer, seller and mortgage lender come together to transfer the title to the new buyer and execute • To advertise or to submit a story idea, call 423-200-4144 •

foundation for the company’s future. Kelley says, “The really rewarding part of this business is all the really close friendships you develop over the years both locally and across the state.” Kelley served as President of the Tennessee Land Title Association and as Director for a number of years.

Heartland also works closely with the real estate agents and the mortgage lenders in organizing their financing documents, preparing closing documentation, and seeing that the closing is done according to the contract. Settlement providers also receive and distribute the monies due at closing to all the various parties who are entitled to be paid for services performed. Kelley says, “Sometimes this effort is like trying to herd cats. It is both challenging and rewarding when everyone leaves the closing room happy.”

Heartland distinguishes itself from other local title agencies not only by having an experienced attorney closely involved in the daily operations but also by the level of participation in continuing education and training in order to keep pace with the changes in the industry

Q: With all the national attention given housing trends and sales or lack of sales across the United States, what are the numbers for the Morristown, Tennessee, Hamblen County area? ~ Louise Clarke, Whitesburg, TN A: Louise, we live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country and we’re not the only ones thinking this. We continually see folks coming from other areas. Also with the amount of industry/manufacturing facilities we are so fortunate to have certainly adds to the attraction to this market. From checking our local Multiple Listing Service through the Lakeway Area Association of Realtors, I found the following information for the year 2006 from January 1 through December 31 and then from 2007 from January 1 through February 26. • We currently have 153 residential homes for sale in the local market for a total of $29,921,800.00 ranging in price from $40,000.00 to $1,200,000.00. • We also have 54 parcels of vacant land for sale a total of $9,517,270.00 ranging in price from $5,200.00 to $2,700,000.00. • For the entire year of 2006 we had a total of 906 residential properties to sell for a total sales volume of $129,800,484.00 with an average price of $143,268.00 with sales ranging from $5,500.00 to $850,000.00. • Land Sales for 2006 were 136 parcels for a total sales volume of $9,517,270.00 with sales ranging from $4,000.00 to $2,800,000.00. From January 1, 2007 through February 26, 2007 total sales volume was $9,772,393.00 with 72 residential properties ranging in sales price from $34,000.00 to $544,500.00. Land sales for this same time frame was 30 parcels of vacant land for total sales volume of $1,055,800.00 with sales ranging from $6,000.00 to $147,500. The Coffee Mates Sip ‘N’ Flip Pictured Left to right: Bill Thompson, Ron Flockhart, Jerry Cranford, Bill North, Bill Hale, Bud Nabers, Herbert Dale, Thomas Carlisle, Robert Collins, Ed Thiel, Bill Hastings, Omer Perryman, Bruce Campbell, Lloyd Etter

For over 50 years, the “Sip ʻnʼ flip” club has met here in Morristown for their daily cup of java. Around 9 a.m., the members of this clever group meet in the cafeteria at Morristown Hamblen Hospital. The coffee for them is free of charge, but the men charge themselves 60 cents per cup and put the money to better use. The trick is, however, that only one member pays for all of the coffee. When the visit is over, they flip a coin to determine which lucky person that will be. The proceeds are then deposited into a wooden box displayed in the center of the table.

Drinking coffee for a good cause!

“When we get about 200 or 300 dollars, we give it to a charity here in town,” said Thomas Carlisle, a charter member of the group. Each year their coffee visits raise over $2,000 for local charities.

The “Old McDonalds” “Old McDonald had a farm ...” but these “Old McDonaldʼs” have a coffee club!

This group of seasoned Morristown men can be found at the McDonalds on W. A.J. Highway almost every weekday morning sharing jokes, tall tales, and lifelong experiences. The group formed twenty-eight years ago. Miss Virginia Rick, their hostess, has tended to the coffee club for the past seven years. Miss Virginia is told by the younger girls that she is flirting with the men. She replies, “Iʼm not flirting. I look forward to coming to work every day because they are just like family.” Pictured left to right: Harold Royston, Grover Wright, Bill Brandenburg, Bill Lunsford (Prince), Clyde Kender, Ed Wolfe, Sam Overley, Quillen Eiseman, Tommy Harris, Willard Johns with Miss Virginia Rick

Timeless Elegance Tea Room It has always been a dream of mine to open a tea room. For many years I collected silver, china and crystal in hopes my dream would come true. After 25 years doing the same thing every day in a Human Resource Office, the time had come to do something fun. A

small cottage became available and the tea room so many have come to know and love as timeless elegance was born. As our business grew I once again prayed for guidance as to what our next step in business should be. We had outgrown our little cottage and there was nowhere to expand. Each day I would pray for direction to where our tea room could comfortably accommodate our prized guests. One day God sent a friend in for lunch. Rowenna spoke with me about a building that her family had purchased on main street. Within just a few weeks it was clear what our next step should be. After many months of work - and overcoming what seemed like mountains - we are now at our new location. Our guests tell me we have “the best chicken salad.” We also offer homemade soups, salad, and quiche. Other menu items are also available as well as our famous tea and Tea Room Soup (squash).

Mom Amy and Chelsey Brown Mom Amy is Director of Organizational Development with the Morristown Chamber of Commerce and Chelsey 14 is a freshman at East High, is on the Volleyball team and participates in Lakeway Club Volleyball. Her favorite class is art. The day Chelsey was born was one of the happiest days of my life. She was born two days before my birthday and the doctors let me take my baby girl home on my birthday. I often say, “she was the best birthday present ever!” I know most mothers are partial to their children but Chelsey was the best baby. She did everything early. She began walking at 8 months old and it has never been the same since! As she started school the teachers would always tell me what a sweet child she was. One teacher told me, “every time I see Chelsey in the hallway she is smiling. She must be a very happy child”. Her father and I have always talked about her “smiling eyes”. As she started her adolescent years, everyone told me “you better watch out….this is the year they (kids) start getting an attitude”, but I waited and waited. She really never copped that attitude. Now donʼt get me wrong, she had her moments…but that is to be expected. Since she has been in high school, I have noticed her changing and becoming a mature young lady. Chelsey has such a tender disposition. She is truly a blessing to everyone she encounters. Being Chelseyʼs mother is a great blessing. God has allowed me to care for His child while here on earth and it is quite an honor. Living with Chelsey is really entertaining. With her witty personality she is always making me and her dad laugh. She will come up with things that I have never heard of. I enjoy being with her so much. I love to go shopping with her on Saturdays (we leave her Dad at home), curl up with her on a Sunday afternoon and watch a movie, and just talk with her about her day on the way home from work and school. I like to hear about her life and what is going on with her at school.

Bottom line...

I love being a mother, but especially Chelseyʼs mother!

The Beach is Open! P lanet Beach Tanning Spa is a franchise that was originated 10

years ago in Louisiana. On January 2, 2007, the beach opened in Morristown and is owned by a native of Hamblen County, Carla Steadman. The mission of the Planet Beach Corporation is “for the benefit of our customers and the communities we serve, we will remain dedicated to the continued success of each Planet Beach Franchise. Our franchise locations will provide superior customer service with an inspiring, alternative atmosphere. Planet Beach will deliver premier wellness, relaxation, tanning and skin rejuvenation services that enhance the contempo spa

experience.” Some of the features that distinguishes Planet Beach from just a “tanning salon” are that every customer has a skin type analysis to determine their tanning profile, each staff member must be certified by SmartTan & Planet Beach University before assisting clients, and each tanning bed has a/c filtered into the bed to allow clients to be comfortable during their tanning experience. Carla Steadman found this franchise opportunity as a way to continue with what her parents instilled in her as she grew up, “There is always a way to make someone smile.” She did this previously while working with the local American Red Cross and making a difference in peopleʼs lives. She still continues to do this work with the National Headquarters of the American Red Cross as a Disaster Reserve. Now, she gets to improve peopleʼs lives by helping them relax and enjoy the moment right here in her hometown. “Everyday when we open our eyes we have two choices: be thankful that we have another day or be upset about facing the world.” Steadman said. Her enthusiasm for life has spread even more as she will become a bride on September 1, 2007 to Eugene Cullip, Jr. of Morristown.

“Enjoying doing things together, caring for the environment, and giving back to the community are some of the values that Pete and I have tried to instill in our children. At the same time, weʼve encouraged them to follow their hearts and do work that makes them happy as well as bringing in a salary.” Pete and Sami Barile, who will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in June, have three adult children and two grandchildren. The whole family is an example of doing just those things. Breau, the owner of Barile Hardscaping and Landscaping, is leaving his creative mark around the Lakeway Area, in the form of patios, pathways, retaining walls and fire pits which he beautifies with plantings. His wife Vickie shares her love of learning with preschoolers. Breau is a volunteer with the S. Hamblen County Fire Department.

Jason and Jessica, along with twins Dylan and Maya, live in Chapel Hill, NC. Jason works with Microsoft Corporation. In their spare time, they are settling into their new home and planning the landscaping there. Brynn followed her heart to the stars, ma majoring in physics and astronomy in col college. She is honing her cooking skills, catching up on reading, and job hunting. Pete and Sami have both served on numerous committees, boards and commissions throughout the community. Sami is following her desire to give back to Morristown by running as a candidate for Mayor in the upcoming election.

Tired of the same ‘ole “dinner and a movie”? Want to JAZZ up your night on the town? Then check out the Walters State Community Jazz Band!

Walters State Community

Jazz Band

The band is made up of local musicians and students who love to perform and value the experience of playing in concert settings. Walters State students can enroll in the band for college credit. The band was formed 1984 under the direction of Mike Hayes. Randy Misamore was the 2nd director of the band. During Randyʼs tenure, two trumpet players joined the band that are still members today, Patrick Livesay and Mike Thomas. Mike Thomas took over as director of the band around 1989 and has been leading the band since. Mike is no stranger to musicians in the Morristown area. He is the director of the Morristown West High School Band and also teaches 5th grade beginning band. Mike has extensive musical experience and is an excellent clinician in the various styles of jazz music like swing, and bebop, to name a few. The repertoire of the band consists of jazz standards in the tradition of Count Basie and Glenn Miller, contemporary jazz from the likes of Maynard Ferguson, and maybe even a rock tune or two. There is certainly something for everyone at each concert! The band does two free concerts each year, usually in May and December, and is also available for private functions. The next concert will be Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at 8:00 pm in the auditorium of the Judge William H. Inman Humanities Complex on the campus of Walters State. Admission is free. Set it in Stone

The parkʼs Friends group has just begun an ongoing fundraiser that will allow citizens to leave their own individual legacy in the park. All are invited to purchase a brick which will be engraved with their own chosen message. The bricks will be displayed at several locations throughout the park. Families, school and church groups, sports teams, and businesses are encouraged to participate. The engraved bricks cost $60 each or two for $100, and include a one-year membership in the Friends group. Brochures are available at the parkʼs visitorʼs center or you may call the number listed below to have one sent to you. “The park is a special place and the engraved bricks are a great way for families to have their name set in stone, so to speak, and show that they support and love the park at the same time,” said Friends president, Bill Andrews. Proceeds from the brick sales will be applied to the groupʼs largest project to date: an overlook deck will be constructed at the highest point in the park to give an expansive view of Cherokee Lake and the landscape that surrounds it. The Country’s First Rhino Super Center Charges Into Morristown When local business owners Daryl and Lisha Bell opened their small automotive franchise back in 2002, they never imagined the whirlwind ride it would become. The following year, after realizing the demand for automotive accessories in the Lakeway area, the Bellʼs opened Rhino Linings of Morristown with the worldʼs #1 spray-in-bedliner and a full line of automotive accessories. In 2006, with the growth of their two businesses and an eye on the future, the Bellʼs made a decision to bring both businesses under one name. After negotiating with Rhino Linings USA, Inc. the concept had a new trademark, Rhino Super Center. The Morristown location is the first of what should become many such centers across the country. In addition to providing full service automotive repairs and accessories, the business is now expanding once again with their new mobile unit. This new addition will pro-

vide the means to spray Rhino Linings tough, polyurethane coating on-site for commercial, residential and industrial applications. The Bellʼs have always taken great satisfaction in their association with Rhino Linings USA, Inc. and the Rhino Linings product, but now more than ever. This practical product has now evolved into tactical as well with its various military and security applications. Twenty percent of the companyʼs business is now military related with their products coating the walls of the Pentagon as well as the thousands of vehicles transporting our troops and supplies around the world, making them impervious to enemy bullets and shrapnel. Helpful skin facts that you can use. with Charles S. Fulk, M.D., FACP, FAAD

New Filler: Radiesse The FDA has just approved the use of Radiesse as a cosmetic filler. The main areas of use are the cheeks, puppet lines, naso-labial fold and jawline. It is not to be used in the lips. Radiesse is made of calcium-based microspheres suspended in an aquagel. This gives an injectable product that looks and feels natural when placed just under the skin. The microspheres act as a scaffolding that the skin uses to growth new collagen. Some early swelling and bruising seem to be the main adverse effects. Mother Nature, Father Time, and Gravity conspire to thin out our skin leaving wrinkles and areas of volume depletion which then cause our skin folds to “head south”. This effect is similar to a nice, juicy apple drying out and developing “wrinkles”. The more volume loss, the deeper the wrinkles. Put the volume back in and the wrinkles go away. Thatʼs the principal behind Radiesse. Of course, we have had fillers for at least 20 years. So, what is special about Radiesse? Itʼs the longevity. The effects of Radiesse last between 12 and 18 months. This is in contrast to collagen (3-4months) and hyaluronic acids (6-12 months). If you have flattened cheeks, prominent lines beside your nose and mouth or hollowed out areas beneath your eyes Radiesse may be just what you have been looking for.
