Feline Urologic Syndrome (Urinary Obstruction) Urine produced in a healthy urinary tract contains a great deal of dissolved minerals. In cats with feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS) mineral crystals collect in the urinary tract, especially in the bladder and its outflow tract (Urethra). The accumulating crystals irritate the lining of the urinary tract and may clump together to form “stones” in the bladder or obstruct the outflow of urine. Obstructions are common in male cats and may be fatal if not treated promptly. Signs of FUS include excessive licking of the genitalia, frequent voiding of small amounts of urine, urinating in unusual locations, blood in the urine, straining or evidence of pain during urination and unproductive attempts to urinate. Total urinary obstruction results in depression, lack of appetite, vomiting and eventual coma and death. Despite intense study, no single cause for FUS has been discovered. We are, however, aware of several factors that may lead to FUS. These include bacterial and viral infections, diet, obesity, reduced physical activity, low water consumption and prolonged urine retention. Surgical neutering does not cause FUS. Important points in treatment: 1. FUS is an emergency, and prompt treatment is essential. Many cats require hospitalization for treatment to relieve the obstruction, flush the urinary tract, treat any infections, correct any fluid imbalances and institute preventative dietary therapy. In spite of treatment, some cats die from irreversible kidney damage. 2. While most cats respond to prompt treatment, the obstruction reoccurs in some cats within a few days or weeks. In some male cats with recurring disease surgical enlargement of the urinary tract opening (perineal urethrostomy) is desirable. 3. Dietary control is essential to treatment and prevention of FUS. Diets designed to treat or prevent FUS contain minimal mineral levels and cause increased water consumption and production of an acidic urine. Acidic urine tends to prevent formation of mineral crystals. Notify Appalachian Animal Hospital if any of the following occur: • Your cat strains or cries when urinating • Your cat frequently passes small volumes of urine • Your cat has blood in the urine or urinates in odd places • Your cat refuses to eat, seems depressed or vomits

Frantom Family Phil, Leslie, Spencer & Abby

Phil and Leslie Frantom have lived in Morristown for 16 years. Their story began in the fall of 1985... Phil was a Recreation Therapist at St. Mary’s Hospital in Knoxville, and Leslie was a nursing student. While they worked in the same facility, they didn’t meet until a patient outing to Cades Cove. Though their task was to mingle with the patients, the attraction they felt for each other was too strong. They spent most of their time keeping an eye on the patients but also getting to know one another. Two years later they married. The following three years were spent drifting around the south as they moved from one job to another—all with the hope of increasing their salaries and providing for a better future. But eventually those parental instincts kicked in and they knew it was time to settle down, stay put, and begin working on a family. Longing to return to East Tennessee, Phil found a job at Lakeway Regional Hospital, in the Psychiatric Unit, and Leslie at the labor and delivery unit at U.T. Hospital in Knoxville.

In 1990 they purchased their dream home in the Historic District of Morristown. It was a project that would require constant updating and long restoration projects, but they didn’t mind. They’d found home. Besides, the street bustled with home repair projects so they fit right in. That year, Phil and Leslie gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and named him Spencer. Three years later, a little girl arrived and she was named Abby. Life was certainly good. They had great jobs, two healthy children, a cozy house surrounded by history, and small town living—who could ask for anything more? Phil and Leslie can, that’s who… Nine years ago, Phil left the medical field to start his own painting business and to complete their dream, Phil’s parents recently moved to Morristown to spend more time with their grandchildren now 15 and 13 years of age. Today Phil and Leslie spend their time working, juggling Spencer’s track events at West High School (he’s on the Cross-Country team) and Abby’s soccer games and track events, teaching karate, and spoiling their retired greyhounds

Every year millions of Americans adorn their Thanksgiving tables with delicious, cooked Turkeys—never giving another thought to the turkeys they devour. Not so for Don McDonald, prize winning turkey call maker and wildlife woodcarver. Don began his adventures in woodcarving in 1972 after a chance encounter with a wood carving book while on vacation. He was so entranced with the book’s content and the idea of making something out of nothing that his wife had to pry him out of the gift shop. That Christmas, that very book appeared under his Christmas tree and life has not been the same since. After spending every spare moment learning to hone his carving skills, Don went on to sell his carvings to private collectors throughout the United States and several countries around the world. Then in 1992, Don met Charlie Johnson, a Virginian turkey hunter who introduced Don to turkey calls, spring hunting, and the idea of making his own turkey calls. Upon research Don discovered that turkeys make several different types of calls, all requiring their own turkey call. In fact, turkeys can make up to twenty-four different types of calls—nine of which are most recognizable.

Don and his wife, Emily, have been married for 45 years. He taught and coached in Morristown and Johnson City. He has won many awards for his works, including three first place awards in the National Wild Turkey Federation National Competition. (www.nwtf.org)

For instance, turkey yelps are the first sounds a turkey makes in the morning. Clucks are used to get another turkey’s attention. Mating calls are only heard in the spring. Cackles are calls made by hens flying down from their roosts. And then there’s the gobble—the sound we’re most familiar with. Over the years, Don has learned a thing or two about hunting turkeys. “Woodmanship, patience, and calling—in that order—are most important. Movement of any kind spells disaster. And decoys are a 50-50 proposition—sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t.” Today, Don makes a nice living from his chance encounters, donates his works to various charities, and takes

special care to pass on his skills and love for wildlife and the outdoors to his two sons, David and Mark, and his four grandchildren, J.D, Matthew, Josh, and Laura. If you would like to meet Don in person, make plans to attend the 31st Annual Mountain Makins Festival at Rose Center (rosecenter.org) between October 27 and October 29, 2006. Preview tickets are only $25 and can be purchased by calling 581-4330. Don displayed his collection of woodcarvings and turkey calls at the very first Mountain Makins Festival over thirty years ago. This year, Don’s collection consists of turkey calls, painted turkey feathers, and various wood carvings. It’s not to be missed.

Two of Don’s Hand-Carved & Painted Turkey Calls

Don’s success story appears in Earl Mickel’s book, “Turkey Call Makers, Past and Present.” This book originally sold for $20 per copy. Today it sells for $1,000 per copy. Over his lifetime, Earl Mickel collected over 5,000 turkey calls. Those turkey calls were recently purchased by a gentleman in Atlanta who plans to build a museum to house this extraordinary collection— a collection worth millions! Native Americans were the first to make turkey calls. Today, hunters use them to hunt as well as collector’s pieces. In fact, custom turkey calls are the number one collector’s item in the country.

We are fast approaching a time when the leaves will begin to change colors, the temperatures will cool down, parents will be preparing the little ones to Trick or Treat and most importantly we will be focusing on a time of THANKSGIVING. Over the past 12 years, we’ve advertised very little and have many of you to thank for that. You have shared us with your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers. Our business has grown and become extremely successful as a result of your referrals. We greatly appreciate the confidence and trust you have shown us and we want you to know how thankful we are for each and everyone of you. Our initial commitment drove us to pursue the best education possible, leading us to take extensive training in a variety of techniques. We were taught that a healthcare facilitator cannot help anyone beyond their own level of health. That’s why we not only seek care for our selves; we also continue to attend seminars, workshop and training. We want to be the best we can be so our existing patients and those to come will have the same opportunity. We are truly blessed to have such an extended family and are committed to assist each of you in reaching the most optimum level of health possible. Part of our way of saying “THANKS” to you is reflected in the design of our current facility, a very modern, up-to-date, state-of-the-art clinic. We desired to create an atmosphere that would make you feel warm and welcome. A place you can bring all your aches, pains, stresses and worries and know you will be greeted with friendly smiles and caring hearts. We also carry a full line of nutritional products that have been specifically formulated and can only be dispensed by a licensed healthcare professional. Also, our heartfelt thanks to our wonderful staff; Linda, Brenda and Melissa, you are the backbone of our practice and we love and appreciate each of you dearly.

In 1995 I was introduced to Deep Massage Therapy and Lisa Kirk. I entered treatment with an intense amount of neck and shoulder stiffness and muscle tension. I cannot sufficiently describe the degree of relief and flexibility I have enjoyed under Lisa’s care. She individualizes each session and integrates multiple techniques that suit specific needs, producing maximum results. I am impressed with her manual dexterity and amazed each time that she pinpoints the exact muscle spasm. Lisa has been gifted with a strength and skill that is truly a Master’s Touch. A continuum to Neuro Muscular Therapy is spinal alignment - a car without a wheel alignment is a car out of balance and the same is true of the body. Dr. Mike Kirk, a trained and certified Kinesiologist and Chiropractor is extremely qualified in these fields. he is conservative yet progressive in his treatment program. Together Mike and Lisa with much discernment form an excellent team in both diagnostic work and the science of maintaining good health. ~ Mary Hadden You’ll never meet nicer people than Dr. Kirk , Lisa and their staff. They were so sympathetic and interested in my condition. Dr. Kirk took his time explaining with great detail everything he intended to do to help me. I was in great pain in my lower back and hips. Being a pastor, it was hard for me to stand long enough to deliver the message to my church. I no longer have that problem, thanks be unto God for giving Dr. Kirk this wisdom and knowledge and I highly recommend Dr. Kirk and Lisa. ~ Rev. Jim Turner, First Baptist Church of Bulls Gap Chiropractic care has helped me tremendously as a college athlete. With the help of chiropractic my recovery time from injuries or soreness is cut in half. I can tell a change in my overall health as well. The staff at Kirk & Kirk and Dr. Kirk himself, have been such a blessing and I am grateful for all the help and healing over the years. This profession has had such an impact on my life that I am now in the process of becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic myself. ~ Lindsey Farris From the beginning, Kirk & Kirk Health Clinic has been a valuable and necessary part of the healing ministries in Morristown. When I played golf, they kept my body working. When I was injured, they were there. They have pulled together a great staff. The defining words are ethical, professional and caring. ~ Zenona Faust Harris

I have been a patient of Dr. Kirk & Lisa’s for several years. Their treatments have almost eliminated the migraine headaches that I was having about every two weeks. Thank you Mike & Lisa! ~ Louise Evans

IN GOOD HEALTH, Dr. Kirk & Lisa

EXPERIENCE TOMORROW’S ENERGY TODAY WITH THE EB-305 ENERGY BALANCER & DETOXIFICATION FOOTBATH We’re taught as children the importance of hygiene, constantly washing our hands and bathing daily, all to keep our body clean and prevent illness from outside germs. What about the inside of our body and the toxins exterior cleaning can’t reach? People are constantly being exposed to unhealthy levels of pollution including dangerous toxins and heavy metals. Consider our regular contact with: air pollution, acid rain, fertilizers, contaminated water, rancid food from restaurants and stores, over chlorinated and fluoridated water, growth hormones present in many foods, antibiotics from direct and indirect sources, unhealthy food additives. The body’s ability to cleanse itself internally simply becomes overloaded and toxic residues build up. As a result, the body’s cells can’t work at peak efficiency, setting off a domino effect for physical ailments and potential health problems that can include: allergies, arthritis, Immune deficiencies, migraines, fatigue, decreased muscle function, Loss of flexibility, cancer, health disease, circulatory problems, memory impairments. Now there are steps to help cleanse these harmful toxins from the inside of your body. It’s called the “EB” Cellular Cleanse Therapy and it was designed and developed to restore the body’s balance and energy levels, while facilitating and aiding in its natural detoxification process.

SKIN TIGHT Helpful skin facts that you can use. with Charles S. Fulk, M.D., FACP, FAAD

Dr. Fulk: I seemed to have developed an itchy, bumpy rash after using the spa hot tub. What causes this? -Paul Dear Paul: Sounds like you have “hot tub folliculitis”. I have seen several cases of this lately. This rash is caused by a water-loving bacterium called Pseudomonas. While Pseudomonas is a very deadly germ when it invades the moist skin of a burn patient, it is more of a nuisance to the healthy bather. Public hot tubs, whirlpools and even loofahs can be contaminated by Pseudomonas. This germ will enter the skin pores and set up house in the hair follicles. The bumps appear over the next day or two. The little red bumps are more prominent under the swimwear or skin folds and may become pustular or even nodular.

High-tech monitoring for mom-to-be and baby Lakeway Regional Hospital has a taken a step into the future with the recently installed Centricity Perinatal Central Monitoring System on the Women’s Pavilion. The very latest technology allows physicians to have 24- hour access to their maternal patients’ heart rate, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and contractions, along with the baby’s fetal heart rate and response to contractions via a secure internet connection. The Centricity System provides a constant continuum of care unique to obstetrics. “Lakeway Regional Hospital is very proud to be the first health care facility to bring this high level of technology to the area.

Kids get hot tub folliculitis more easily than adults because they tend to stay in the water longer and often go with large groups that use very busy water parks during very hot weather. These two conditions make it hard for management to keep the water sterilized adequately. An adult is more likely to acquire hot tub folliculitis at a health spa. Also, old-style wooden hot tubs found at private homes and older ski resorts are very hard to sterilize once contaminated. Treatment of folliculitis is to keep the skin dry and if the condition is persistent, use vinegar compresses and antibacterial cream. When the folliculitis is more severe and the patient is old enough, I prescribe Cipro, an oral antibiotic. It is important to alert the hot tub management so that the germ can be thoroughly eradicated and the hot tub water strictly monitored.

The system creates a constant scale by providing vital clinical information about the mother and baby along with historical medical information in real time to the physicians and nurses who are caring for them. When an expectant mom arrives at the Women’s Pavilion, her nurse will enter her prenatal medical history into the system. Once the mother is comfortable in the birthing suite her heart rate, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and contractions, along with the baby’s fetal heart rate and response to contractions, are monitored and recorded into the system immediately. This creates a paperless, complete historical record of her birthing experience in real time. In addition to increasing the quality of patient care, the system offers enhanced physician office integration with The Women’s Pavilion. The most unique quality of the Centricity System is the 24 hour real-time access by physicians. Dr. Peter Clark, Ob/Gyn with East Tennessee OB explains, “This system is truly the cutting edge of medicine, it allows me as a physician to be seconds from evaluating a patient instead of minutes as before.” The system’s OB Link allows a physician to monitor the fetal activity and maternal vital signs and data via a secure website, 24 hours a day from anywhere. To learn more about the Centricity System or about the Women’s Pavilion at Lakeway Regional Hospital, contact Sheila Sturgill at 423-522-6520.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

www.nbcam.org

There is Life After Breast Cancer I had a Modified Radical Unilateral Mastectomy done, which removed 17 lymph nodes—with only one being infected. My sister, Denita, was my rock. But it was probably my boys, Garrett and Timothy Smith, who truly encouraged and inspired me.

Hello, my name is Diane Dunay of Morristown. It all began ten years ago, on what was otherwise a normal October morning. I had dropped my bar of soap and as I bent down to pick it up, I discovered a lump on my breast. A biopsy was scheduled, I was only 34 years old. On December 6, 1996 the biopsy report, from Morristown Hamblen Health System Radiology, confirmed that I had cancer. “Invasive Ductal Cell Carcinoma” was the actual diagnosis. A mastectomy was necessary. I left the office in a bit of a daze. I had so many things to do, people to tell, and I couldn’t help wondering, “Will this Christmas be my last?” The day of the mastectomy arrived way too fast.

The Chemotherapy treatment involved hair loss. Having long hair made it very difficult. I couldn’t emotionally handle my hair falling out in strands and clumps, so I shaved it all off—the look on my co-workers faces was simply priceless! I learned that hair, or lack thereof, didn’t make a person. During this time, I tried to keep my life as normal as possible. I continued leading Cub Scouts and coaching Tee-Ball. Positive attitude and faith was the best medicine. In July of 1997 my treatments were complete. A bone scan proved I no longer had cancer. It was soon time to begin dealing with the scars left by the cancer. That’s when I discovered a new procedure called Trans-Abdominal-Flap. The procedure would essentially reconstruct a breast out of my stomach.

Today, I feel normal. Normal as one can feel after an ordeal such as mine, but more importantly I am happy, alive, and well. And I just recently married a wonderful man, Don Dunay. EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES - I am sharing my story with you because I want you to understand how important EARLY detection is. If you feel a lump where it’s not supposed to be, don’t ignore it. No matter how scary it may seem, no matter how busy you are, and no matter how tight your finances are, EARLY detection is the key to saving your life. There’s a saying that goes something like this: “God won’t give you more than you can handle”. I’m a true testimony of that. I know it sounds crazy, but I am a better person because of what I went through. My attitude towards life is better, my relationship with God is stronger, and my bonds with family, my friends, and my co-workers are tighter than ever! I am also very blessed to have wonderful, skilled doctors and medical facilities so close to home. Yes! There is life after breast cancer and on December 12, 2006, I will celebrate ten years of that life!

Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System offers the latest technologies in cancer treatment. Thanks to Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System (MHHS), patients now have the luxury of no longer traveling to larger cities for cancer treatments. Total cancer care is now available at the Morristown Regional Cancer Center, located on the main campus of MHHS. According to the American Cancer Society, one in three will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. According to a recent study, over 30,000 Tennesseans will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone. Morristown is home to some of the most advanced cancer fighting equipment and medications that’s available in the country. The cancer center has a caring, multidisciplinary team of physicians including experts in medical oncology (chemotherapy), radiation therapy and surgery, to help fight the disease. This state-of-the-art facility recently added a PET/CT scanner, which is the next generation of diagnostic equipment to further advance cancer treatment and diagnosis.

the newest member of the E TN OB-GYN P.C.

Dr. Angela Many Doctor Many was raised in Memphis, Tennessee but it wasn’t until she helped a missionary doctor in Bolivia that she fell in love with the idea of becoming a doctor herself. She received her Undergraduate degree in Zoology from Auburn University and attended medical school at UT Memphis. Upon completion of medical school, she transferred to the University of New Mexico where she completed her residency. Today, Dr. Many, her husband, Heath Many, MD, and their two-year old daughter, Rees, reside in Talbott. Dr. Many has joined the staff of E TN OB-GYN P.C. where she’s been quoted as saying, “I love the fact that I have been able to join a group of physicians that are not only giving and caring to their patients, but pride themselves on continuing to provide the community with advanced surgical techniques!” She chose to become a doctor of obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) because she wanted to help women during their most memorable and often, challenging times. She chose E TN OB-GYN P.C. for its commitment to excellence, its personalized touch with patients, and its state-of-the-art surgical techniques. In addition to routine and high-risk obstetrics, Dr. Many also specializes in menopausal and perimenopausal therapies, treatment of urinary incontinence, management of abnormal bleeding, cervical dysplasia, and pelvic pain. Speaking of personalized touches, E TN OB-GYN P.C. treats each pregnancy as though it was the mother’s first. Each expectant mother receives a special keepsake to remember the baby’s birthing experience: Create-A-Book and a very special book: Your Pregnancy And Birth. Each new baby also receives a free new-baby photo session and an 8x10 photo! E TN OB-GYN P.C. has four board-certified OB-GYN surgeons available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and three nurse practitioners specializing in women’s health issues. East Tennessee also has a dedicated phone nurse available to answer those nagging, and often, non-urgent questions—questions that most first-time moms have. E TN OB-GYN P.C. strongly believes in offering their patients choices—choices like: circumcising baby boys, choosing the right form of birth control to fit your active lifestyle, having the perinatologist come to you—here in Morristown—instead of driving to Knoxville, having a bone density test, stress management options, and other treatments designed especially for women! And E TN OB-GYN P.C. offers special procedures to help women live more active, productive, and happy lifestyles. For instance, women with heavy, painful periods can start enjoying life again thanks to a procedure called, Thermal Ablation. In one 30 minute treatment performed in the office, heavy menstrual periods are over forever! If being a woman, a wife, and a mother is important to you, and you want a group of physicians who feel the same way, we welcome you to visit E TN OB-GYN P.C. today!

During the ‘stages’ of menopause the hormones Estrogen and Progesterone (as well as other hormones) are no longer produced at the same levels in the body and must be replenished. Hormone balance is the key, too much or too little of any particular hormone can make a huge difference in your overall health and the way you feel. The decline in Estrogen and Progesterone are responsible for many common ‘symptoms’ of menopause. However, you can overcome these ‘symptoms’ by regaining your hormone balance. The key is to make an informed decision and McFarland Pharmacy is your source for bio-identical hormone replacement.

PROGESTERONE BENEFITS 1. Increase in Quality of Sleep 2. Increase in Bone Density 3. Improves Skin Texture and Color 4. Improves Depression and Anxiety 5. Helps estrogen work better

ESTROGEN BENEFITS 1. Increased Memory Function 2. Decrease in Bone Loss 3. Decrease in Hot Flashes 4. Decrease in Skin Thinning and Dryness 5. Decrease in Vaginal Dryness 6. Decrease in Urinary Incontinence

Which hormones do you need? The answer is in a simple and accurate non-invasive salivary test. Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement (BHRT) is the natural way to replace your hormones. Contact Tina or Mike for more information and to schedule an appointment. 423-581-1118. See our program on ‘Especially For Women’ airing on Charter Main Street (Channel 4) at 12PM, 6PM and 11PM
