very time Valentine’s Day rolls round, I can’t help but think back to a time where my older, ever charming brother mocked me mercilessly for buying my boyfriend a single red rose. “So, he forks out a fortune for dozens of roses for you… and all he gets in return is one?” My brother laughed as I returned from my frantic dash to get flowers before the boyfriend returned. I felt stupid – but then again, I always do when trying to find something to get my significant other on this red and pink, candy filled day. What do you buy the guy? Us girls are easy – gift us chocolates, flowers, shiny jewels! Heck, serve us a home cooked meal by candlelight and we’ll be happy. But when it comes to getting the perfect gift for the guy in our lives, we’re stumped.

Or maybe you’re just in the mood for a good old toasted sandwich! You’ll have a tough time deciding what to feast on.

it's time to Wok n Roll!

hen a new Asian cuisine establishment opens in Pretoria, we’re sure to sit up and take notice! Wok n Roll is a contemporary new restaurant that gives a great first impression with its modern and aesthetically pleasing design and décor…

We’ve gotta say, our top picks of the sushi were the Dragon Roll, as well as the Fuji Bamboo and the Oishi Sushi - which are one of the chef ’s specials! To be honest though, we think it’s only fair to try all the dishes. You know… to give you a proper review. If sushi’s not want you’re keen for, the Salmon Bowl, Thai Green Chicken Curry, and Sweet and Sour Pork have also gotten our vote.

As it’s a new establishment, Wok n Roll are still trying to find their groove, so you’ll need to be a bit patient when it comes to their service especially on the weekends when there’s so much foot

traffic from the mall. However. We’re definitely looking forward to visiting again and trying more of the vast menu from this contemporary Asian restaurant.

Woodlands Boulevard, Pretoriuspark, Pretoria, 0081 5 1 012 997 0598

Those with a sweet tooth will be delighted by the Wok n Roll Delight; a strawberry, Nutella and cashew nut spring roll, served with vanilla ice-cream. Did we mention there’s Matcha Green Tea ice cream on the menu?

Words & Images Cassidy Taylor-Memmory

We were welcomed to our seat around the sushi conveyor belt, and offered prawn crackers to start our mouth-watering food adventure. With a selection of Asian cuisine options that range from Asian styled tacos and soups to sushi, dim sum, curries and traditional ramen. There’s also (obviously) fried noodles and rice dishes, plus delectable desserts. We honestly didn’t know where to start.

Wok n Roll offers standard sushi options like California rolls and fashion sandwiches, but they really stand out with their fresh and contemporary chef-style sushi dishes that tempt you to try them all.

Same superb flavour - new location

Freaking out would be a huge missed steak, because The Godfather isn’t going far. Midstream is perfectly situated between Centurion and Midrand, making it accessible from all major highways. The new location will find the Godfather in a boomed off area, with secure parking and gorgeous surrounds. “We’re so excited about the move, as it reflects the changing needs of our clients to be in a more secure, suburban environment,” explain enthusiastic owners Janet and Steve Kobrin – who have run the Godfather together for close on 30 years.

Rooiloin certainly will; a sirloin smoked over Rooibos leaves and stalks, served with a herb butter. They’re also famous for their New York Sirloin, and their juicy spare ribs – which they have in every variety; lamb, beef and pork. “The absolute essence of our business is the meat,” says Janet. They do everything – from maturing and aging the meat, to cutting it themselves. No pre-packed meat here! A dedicated meat locker with stringent humidity and temperature control ensures the meat is aged to perfection. “That’s very important because there, you get the best quality. We take out 90% of the sinew, so that what you’re getting is a piece of steak, personally cut per portion,” adds Steve. And what meat it is… The Godfather use (as often as they can get their paws on it!) only SA grain-fed beef, making their meat better in taste, texture and leanness. Lean meat is healthy meat – and get this, all the bits that are too small to make steak? They’re minced to make the Godfather’s infamous, hand-formed burger patties.

Did we mention that this spot has scooped up the Diners Club Diamond Wine List Award Janet explained the motivation behind the move for their vino list for 6 years in a row? They was the growing trend of ‘estate living’, where specialise in wines that compliment the food, people tend to eat, shop and work where they and every member of staff is stringently trained live. Believe us, if you’re within sniffing distance on what pairs well certain items. “The staff of their specialty dish - the Chocolate Chilli have more wine tastings than our guests do!” 220g Fillet – you’re going to want one of those Janet laughs. Uhm, can we have an application bad boys every night. A perfectly prepared fillet form please? smothered in a dark imported chocolate sauce Everything you’ve come to know and love with just the right kick of chilli… magnifique! If that doesn’t get those juices flowing then the about the Godfather will follow them to their

What more could you need for this month…. ‘Nyala o Nyele’ is a popular saying within the Sotho cultures. It means that marriage isn’t easy; things get crazy, and people should be prepared for all the things that come with tying the knot and going forth as a married couple. WITH JOHN QUINN Global Brand Ambassador for Tullamore D.E.W.

How’d you score such an awesome job? I believe I got it as my new boss thought he needed someone better in my previous role as a Regional Director for Central Europe. Or maybe he thought I might bring some valuable insights to the brand and the listening word. I’d like to think it’s the latter, but I’m not certain. Is whiskey popular in South Africa, and why? South Africa has a big market for whisky and I believe it’s the dynamic nature of the changing market here, with consumers seeking new products and outlets for the hard-earned money. Consumers are more inquisitive, and now that the Internet has made the world feel like a local parish, locals can see what’s trending in different parts of the world, so that helps too. Any tips for people looking to make whiskey their poison of choice? Of course, they should try

Tullamore D.E.W. – what else would I say? In fact, people should try different whiskey styles from different places. An event like Whisky Live is fantastic for connoisseurs and newbies; if you’re interested to see what whiskeys you might like, you get all shades and sizes at Whisky Live.

What’s the best way to serve whiskey? On its own, with ice and water on the side for the client to choose. Sometimes, I like it with some freshly squeezed apple juice - not concentrate - but then, I’m a bit weird.

5 t @TullamoreDEW @tullamoredew

Why add water to whiskey? It’s usually because a whiskey at 43% can be full of flavours that are difficult to identify at that strength. Adding water opens up the whiskey and allows all the constituent flavours to show themselves. Best food pairing? It depends on the whiskey. With Tullamore Dew Original, I love smoked salmon, sushi or sashimi. With older whiskeys (like a 12-year-old) opt for rare beef, and with something like single malts, I’d opting for a nice chocolate dessert or a mature cheese.

TRAVEL DESTINATIONS For every stage of life

Hello Pretoria • February 2018 •

THE CAREFREE 20S Now’s the time to save as much as possible, and take an extended working holiday or gap year. Consider a ski season in North America, teaching English in Hong Kong, or volunteering at a needy organisation in South Africa. There are many work abroad options through reputable companies like STA Travel. Check out South African Volunteers based on the Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape, who work various projects in the community. Consider party destinations like Ibiza, or joining an organized tour like Contiki. Money may be tight, so look for any discounts you can arrange on flights or accommodation, such as those provided by companies like Fedhealth and their rewards program. 5

You may have a more established career and possibly a partner or family. Travelling for longer periods may be hard, but not impossible. You’ll have more established likes and dislikes; you may favor cultural hubs over party destinations. Got young kids? Consider a family friendly destination like Mauritius, where the kids are entertained during the day and you can relax.

Your job may be stressful as you take on increased responsibilities – so you need this holiday more than ever! By now you may also own a home, and if you’re older, the kids may be leaving the nest. An exciting option to consider is house swapping, where you swap your home with someone

else’s across the globe, even if it’s for a short period of time. Home Exchanges claims to offer access to 65000 homes across 150 countries! If you’re seeking an antidote to your stressful life, why not consider a yoga retreat in India, or learning the art of Tai Chi in China? 5

Getting older means you have to go out and seek adventure yourself ! Traveling keeps you young at heart and physically active, making it even more important to keep doing it. Australia has much to offer; snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef and exploring Ayers Rock. Feeling nostalgic? You may want to revisit an old favourite from your glory days.

he days of heading out to the movies are gone – unless it’s a blockbuster, duh. What’s the point, when everything you need can be set up and streamed right into your home? Now, we’re ‘get up and go’ people, but when the TV comes on and that couch starts calling, how can we resist?

Take into consideration lighting, curtains or blinds and the windows, so that there isn’t a reflection on the screen or wall Remember that the acoustics in the room are affected by high ceilings and open-plan spaces. Sound travels and could cause disturbances with neighbors or housemates. Comfort is key, and this extends to the furniture you choose. Plan the placement of the screen, projector, speakers and amplifier within the space. And finally, strive for a balanced and quality sound system. Hello Pretoria • February 2018 •

Now here is a phenomenal entrepreneur… she’s the CEO of Top Model South Africa, the owner of the online fashion store and academy, Opulent Me, and a co-author of the top seller ‘Survival Guide for Girls’. We had to peek into a day in the life of Suzette…

7Suzette minutesMarais with How do you manage your time between your business ventures and being a mum to twins? We all know time flies by – the good news however, is that you’re the pilot! So, when it comes down to managing it all, I don’t think it’s about being too busy, but rather a matter of prioritising what’s important in life – and finding a balance.

Hello Pretoria • February 2018 •

Any tips for mums out there who are doing the same thing? I always say work and a women’s career is important, but at the end of the day, if you want to change the world or make a difference, go home and love your family. Your kids will be the game changers and the new generation of world shakers, so invest in them. It all comes down to doing what makes your soul happy and what is financially viable for you. What do you enjoy most about working as a modelling coach, and your role as CEO of Top Model South Africa? The numerous testimonies that we receive each year is something I value. They show me the work we do as a company makes a difference. Also, when you’re able to see the growth of someone before your eyes, you know you’re doing something right.

Where’s your favourite spot to eat in the city? I love Greek food, so Mythos! I also love a romantic picnic spot under the stars. How do you ensure you always look tip top for your events? My motto is to impress people before you even speak and to make style your signature. I always wear what I feel comfortable in or what I like – but for me, less is more. What can you not leave the house without? My phone, and some good perfume. t @suzette_marais @suzette.marais

What’s it like being a woman with the job title of CEO? Women empowerment is something I stand for and get involved with. Many would say it makes me a feminist, but I believe women are already strong, and the idea of feminism should not be associated with a woman with the idea to make her stronger – but rather to change the way in which the world perceives the strength of women. It’s a great feeling to set an example for young girls I work with, and to show them that young girls with a dream will become mature women with a vision.
