I

f there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that 2018 has been a tough year for South Africa. From #statecapture and the #guptagate, to several fuel price increases and the rand dropping further and further (I could go on), you might feel like all the stress has dulled the festive season sparkle this year. That’s where Hello Festive Season comes in. My team has gone out of their way to bring you the best tips, tricks and trends to make the most wonderful time of the year just that – from start to finish. You can thank us later! Start your journey through our festive season guide on the Calendar pages to help plan and navigate the merriest time of the year in Joburg from the final working weeks right up until New Year’s Eve. We’ve rounded up the most exciting events, concerts and festivals that are guaranteed to get the whole family pumped for the festivities – including the kids and your difficult uncle. If large crowds, screaming babies and outrageous queues – not to mention Michael Bublé on repeat – isn’t your idea of fun, get your shop on without leaving the house. We’ve tried and tested the best online shopping sites for nabbing affordable and big-name brand gifts to help save you time money and a lot of sanity. Did you have to toss back too many tequila shots at last year’s year-end party just to

tolerate your boss’s cringe-worthy cliché speech? Well, not this year! Flip through our Celebrations section for a how-to guide on saying goodbye to awkward year-end parties and hello to extravaganzas that are bound to get you in the festive spirit as you shimmy and shake the night away in your offensive funny Christmas jerseys. (We promise you and your colleagues will still be speaking about it well into the New Year!) ‘Tis the season for last-minute travel plans! If you’re a spontaneous trip planner like me, you probably haven’t booked your December holiday yet. Looking for sun, sand and surf this year? Let our top picks of the best African island destinations, which showcases my personal favourites – Mauritius, The Seychelles and Zanzibar – inspire you to get ready to back your bags and take full advantage of warm-weather adventures. Whatever you decide to do this festive season, I hope you don’t stop believing in the magic of the season. Be safe, make the most of it and remember: what happens at office parties doesn’t stay at office parties (#justsaying). Happy holidays!

shopping ‘Add to Cart’ THIS SEASON Online shopping - ain’t nobody got time for mall madness

Shopping at the mall during the festive season is like payday on steroids. Finding parking is a mission, there are queues for days and the general frenzy is enough to make anyone reach for a sedative. But we live in the age of convenience, so you do have options.

12

The basics For all those items that are a must to get you in the festive mood, from the tree and the lights, décor, wrapping paper, down to the advent calendar (crucial for the kids you know), Takealot is the place to go. Check out their rad selection of festive tunes. What’s the night before Christmas without some Boney M, Mariah Carey and Celtic Thunder? K www.takealot.com TIP: Or save yourself the hassle completely and keep all the things you used Hello Joburg • Festive Season 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

last year. Its doubtful Boney M is going to update their Christmas album anytime soon. The personal gift Good old Netflorist! The go-to site for every season and reason already have their festive menu of gifts up and running. And they’re really designed to be individual and special. From personalised cheese-boards, beautifully wrapped chocolates and wines to plush bath and body products, there are really good quality gifts to choose from. PS: no one can re-gift a personalized gown #justsaying K www.netflorist.co.za TIP: If you don’t want anyone to know you ordered online, have Netflorirst deliver to you directly. The stocking filler From Christmas cookie cutters to cards and Nomu festive spice, Yuppiechef really brings the heat when it comes to stocking fillers. Of course, while you’re at it, you can pick out other cool gifts for those friends with a penchant for cooking or stock up on some lovely crockery and cutlery if you are having people over for a meal this festive season. K www.yuppiechef.com TIP: If all else fails, it’s always a treat to receive a yuppiechef voucher. TIP2: If you are having gifts delivered to people out of town, you can request a handwritten card for that personal little touch.

Words Carly Ritz Image Supplied

The last-minute grocery dash So, you’ve left Christmas lunch prep to the last minute and the idea of people bumping into your ankles with heavy trolley carts is enough to make you want to order pizzas instead. But that won’t go down well with the in-laws. Whether you need mince pies, gammon or table décor, you can’t go wrong with Woolies online. K www.woolworths.co.za TIP: The website also has cool recipes for extra convenience. Try the Christmas cake trifle! But if you must shop at the mall, here are some tips on how not to have a meltdown  Most important for the sake of your sanity, do not shop with the kids! They will slow you down and nag the hell out of you.  Shop as much in advance as you possibly can on weekdays in the morning.  Avoid weekends. T ake advantage of the festive season extended shopping hour at most malls. T ry the lesser known/smaller malls where possible. HOW TO NOT GO BROKE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON! Avoid going into the red with our hacks to help you save cash.

Oh, the holidays. The parties, the songs, the negative number in your bank account. 'Tis the season to spend, spend, spend! As much as we all love mince pies, Michael Bublé’s albums and bottomless glasses of baileys, unless you get a 13th cheque (we’re so happy for you), you’ll agree that this time of the year can be stressful –because when you add it all up,

Don’t buy new clothes for every party

Start festive shopping now What was it that Oasis sang? “Little by little, you’ll get all the Christmas shopping you wanted” – or something like that. What we’re trying to get at is that although it might seem a little early to start festive shopping, by buying a few things every week between now and the actual shopping season, you’ll be able to keep track of what you’re buying and stay on top of your Hello Joburg • Festive Season 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

finances without it coming as a huge shock all at once.

We know, we know – when you’re attending a bunch of parties with overlapping guests, it’s tempting to go out and buy a ton of new outfits, but instead, try to just accessorise a few staple pieces. A little black dress or classic suit, for example, is something you can wear to every party on your holiday calendar because you can dress it up and down in so many different ways.

Avoid the ‘shopping momentum effect’ Yup, it’s a real thing. You know that natural high you get when you buy something? A study by Yale and Stanford researchers label it as the ‘shopping momentum effect’. For us shopaholics, buying just one thing can spiral into a serious spree. To avoid this, simply take a break after a purchase. Or, if you’re shopping online, step away from the computer! Embrace your baking and making urges Stop being a snob (seriously!) and DIY it up. Taking pride in buying presents isn’t a bad thing, but don’t feel like you’re going to be judged entirely on the price tag of whatever

you’re gifting. Sometimes the best presents are homemade, thoughtful things, so why not use your talents to make gifts for the family? Simply search for homemade gifts on Pinterest and you’ll get thousands of fabulous

5 ideas.

Consider a cashback credit card With a cashback credit card, you get a percentage (usually 5%) back with every

purchase you make. In other words, your shopping instantly becomes cheaper without even looking at a discount code. Just make sure you set up a debit order to pay it in full every month, otherwise, you could be paying up to 23% back in interest, which makes the 5% saving look measly!

celebration No more Festive Fear Say goodbye to those ̒awkward office ʼ end of year parties! Most people have mixed feelings when it comes to the end of the year company festive function. Yes, there is usually free food and booze (except for the penny-pinching companies where there isn’t) but seeing as though you work with the same group of people day in and day out, do you really want to have massages together or spend the day bonding as a big group on an overpaid corporate team build exercise? We don’t think so. None-the-less, people do look forward to a shindig of sorts. So, here’s a couple of suggestions of what really makes a good end of year function.

28

VENUE When you work long hours, all year round at the same desk in the same office next to the same guy who chews like a three-wattled bellbird at 100 decibels, it’s hard to associate the place with fun and festive cheer. So, if there’s one thing you take from this when it comes to the venue, take your team out somewhere Hello Joburg • Festive Season 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

different. It immediately says, that you really do want people to have a good time rather than a quick drink and snack and head back to their desks. And seeing as though Joburg is gearing up for summer holidays and everyone loves a balcony or a porch, take it outside, maybe somewhere with a view. It sets the tone for a good afternoon or evening out. Our Suggestion: Everyone is raving about the latest addition to Bolton Road in Rosebank – A Street Bar Named Desire. The tapas restaurant and bar has room upstairs or downstairs so it can really accommodate a nice big group or a bunch of smaller groups. This place is going to be popular this year so book early! But it’s not the only venue either. From The Westcliff Hotel pool deck, Ferguson’s on 5th rooftop restaurant in Illovo or the spacious Milk Bar, you are spoiled for choice in Mzansi. Just plan in advance to avoid disappointment. 1 www.streetbar.co.za 1 www.fourseasons.com 1 www.fergusons5th.co.za 1 www.milkbar.co.za

THE BAR Cut the circus acts and let people chill out. No one is really in the mood for miniature golf. Truth be told, people want to sit back, relax and have a nice cold drink on the above-mentioned balcony with a view. If you do happen to go with a venue that doesn’t have a bar (check with the venue before-hand if you can bring booze) then make sure to get the professionals in for drinks in the sun. It’s as easy a phone call. PS: don’t forget some mocktails for the non-tipplers too. Our Suggestion: Thirst Bar Services, the mobile bar company can really handle the task at hand. They also offer a funky icecream bar and coffee station if you want to up the ante even more. 1 www.thirst.co.za THE FOOD Make sure you feed people well to avoid a “hangry” crowd. Again you can go with the in-house catering of the venue you select or bring some food in. This is not a cooking show or a dinner party. No one wants to eat tiny bite-size dishes of things they can’t pronounce. Go with something substantial like burgers or pizzas. Our Suggestion: A food truck is a really cool idea and easy to organize. If you are

stuck for ideas, start with these. Balkan Burgers: for the most insane Serbian cheeseburger. 1 www.balkanburger.co.za Brohemian: the mobile wood-fired pizza truck. E @BrohemianPizza THE ENTERTAINMENT At an office party, people want to be entertained rather than be the entertainment. Karaoke (a personal favourite) might be better suited for a bachelorette party. Most people in the office really aren’t that keen to sing off-key in front of their colleagues. If you do want to have some entertainment, let it be just that. Something cool that your team can rave about. Our Suggestions: People like to name-drop and make their friends a little envious. If budget allows, get a cool local band or muso for the afternoon. Why not ask them for a special rate for your company party? Nothing ventured, nothing gained right? If all else feels, a reasonable DJ with a nice mix of tunes is just as good. THE TRANSPORT This one’s important! You want your team to have a good time and have a few drinks.

Most people will shy away from the alcohol if they know they have to drive later on. Making transport options available to your team tells them that you really do care and you really do want everyone to have a nice time. Our Suggestion: Chat to Uber to make a plan or order some shuttles. There really are a bunch of options. Let your colleagues know ahead of the time so they can make a plan. If you go for something like Sober Chauffeur, then people can arrive in their own cars. With Uber, it may be a better idea for people to leave their cars at the office or at home. 1 www.soberchauffeur.co.za 1 www.uber.com THE GIMMICKS Make the day a little bit more significant with a few words of thanks to your team. Maybe give out a few awards for the best sale of the year or deal (depending on the nature of your business). Our Suggestion: This is also a great opportunity for any personal congratulations if someone’s tying the knot or having a baby. At the end of the day, most of us are still very much in the business of people.

Have fun!

'TIS THE SEASON TO SOCIALISE AND SAVE (OR AT LEAST TRY)

32

Only one thing matters over the holiday period no matter your religious or secular inclination; socializing. And this can potentially become a very expensive exercise. So, here’s some ideas on how to navigate those social nuances without kicking off the New Year in debt counselling. Hello Joburg • Festive Season 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Bubble wise: You don’t need a bottle of Dom Perignon or Moët for this get-together. In fact, if you plan to put OJ into either of the above get a nice bottle of Pongracz from between R120 – R150 at your nearest Solly Kramers and if you opt for the rosé, then you could even forgo the juice. The rest: Pick up the juice and fruit at your local supermarket. If you really want to save a bit more, then go for the whole fruit as opposed to pre-cut.

Bring and braai for the couple friends who’ve been promising to get together for months What you will need:

A home with a braai, meat, salads, rolls and drinks. Dessert - optional. Divide and conquer: We’re pretty sure that during the course of the year, you went to at least one wedding if not more. As did your mates. And it’s highly likely you’ve all been promising to catch up since then. Now’s as good a time as ever for that long overdue braai and the best part is that everyone can chip in and share the load.

Words Carly Ritz Image Supplied

The meat: The Sloane Meat Market has an extensive variety of products and offers great specials when you buy in bulk. Sloane Park Shopping Centre, corner Sloane and William Nicol drive SPREAD THE LOVE A real festive champion spreads out the cheer for maximum bonding with friends and family. Sure, a big summer pool braai or pre-Christmas lunch with 50 people gets the job done in one go but it’s also impersonal to a degree and heavy on the pocket. Not to mention the mission that is the clean up the following day. Spending time in smaller groups lets you really connect with the people closest to you and manage budgets optimally. Here are some meaningful and economic ways to connect with your peeps this festive season.

Mimosas for breakfast with your closest girlfriends at the pool. What you will need: For a group of five to six people, you need about four bottles of bubbles and four litres of orange juice (and even that is generous).

Meat on Grant: Whether you want a spit braai or oldfashioned boerie and chicken flattie, Meat on Grant can cater a real feast from R160 – R190 per person– check out the extensive list of salads and sides too. 59 Grant Ave, Norwood Alternatively, the nearest supermarket. You are bound to find a braai pack and a myriad of other specials in your local grocery store at this time of the year. The bread: Get to a Pick n Pay bakery mid-morning on a Saturday! If you go too early the fresh bread and rolls won’t be ready and if you go after lunch, you’ll miss the good stuff. For those with a sweet tooth: Ice-cream and hot, chocolate sauce is always a winner. All you need is a tub of vanilla icecream, some cream and a few bar ones.

Easy lunching for the family

What you will need: A family you like and a good dose of perspective. Just because it’s the festive season, doesn’t mean you have to be all fancy when your folks and extended family come over. And if you care that your mother-in-law is judging you because you haven’t flown in an Italian chef, then don’t invite her or grow a pair and tell her to sit down.

celebration

A fruit cocktail is also a nice option. Throw in some fruit or pastries for the girls to munch and lay down a few towels and pillows at the edge of the pool. It’s your very own boutique hotel girl’s brunch!

Foolproof the menu: How wrong can you go with a big homemade pasta dish and a delicious fresh salad? You probably have most of the ingredients in the cupboard anyway and even if you don’t, this should be the kind of meal you can make out of the cupboard. Worst case scenario, you may need to run to the grocery store for a couple of extras. Chips and dips: Most people fill up on good old-fashioned salt and vinegar chips and dip at a family lunch. Also, it’s more than appropriate to ask family members to bring these items which will save you the hassle of securing them anyway. Pasta: Unless you’ve been banting lately, you should have a couple of bags in the pantry. Chopped tins of tomato: 98% chance you have two or more tins that have been sitting there since the last time you had the family over. Garlic, olive oil, onions, salt, pepper and onion: It’s a given. Olives/chickpeas/feta/parmesan/ capers: Touch and go in some kitchens but a staple in others. There is bound to be at least one of these items in your pantry to add a little pizzazz to your dish. Choice of protein: Freezer or grocery store. Alternatively, order a variety of big delicious pasta dishes from Super Sconto Italian Food Centre #YUM. Then make sure you invite your mother in law and hide the packaging. Corner 5th Street Tirren House 169, 171 Louis Botha Ave, Orange Grove The truth is the people who love you the most want to catch up and see you and that could be over a cup of coffee or a beer on your porch. Keep it simple this festive season and in doing so, keep it real. For more tips on how to save in all other ways this festive season make sure to check out page 22. Chop up garlic finely and put in a bowl with olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Place a small pot on a hot stove and pour in the white wine and bring to boil. Place the clams and the mussels in a colander small enough to place in the pot but be careful not to submerge the shellfish. Steam for one minute but be careful not to overcook. Once tender remove. Place a frying pan over heat and pour two tablespoons of oil in – make sure the oil is hot. Place prawns in the pan frying at a medium to high heat, turn over once pink and continue frying the other side. Remove from heat once cooked. Next fry scallop till lightly golden and turn over but be careful not to overcook. Next fry the squid tentacles for 10 seconds on a high heat then remove. Once all is cooked drizzle with garlic oil dressing and season to taste.

“Stepping into a kitchen for the first time at 14 years old I knew that this is what I’d be doing for the rest of my life and that I'd give it my heart. SECOND COURSE By Chef Shayne Holt from Parliament Smoked Lamb Ribs Serves 1 METHOD Get your butcher to cut you some nice meaty lamb ribs and get your Weber ready for low, indirect heat. Soak some wood chips in water so they smoulder when you put them on the coals and not flame. Rub the ribs with your choice of spice (we use coriander seeds, paprika, dried mint, smoked salt and pepper) - get creative! Make sure the temperature is at a steady 120 degrees celsius and place your lamb ribs on the grid on indirect heat over a drip tray of water (water on the bottom grid). Drain the wood chips and throw a few on the coals and watch the smoke plume! close the lid, close the vents to half way and get ready for a three-hour wait. Check the heat and smoke occasionally: add a coal or two to keep the temperature steady, add some more wood chips to keep the smoke going (if you like it super smokey, you know what to do - we've found a mild smoke works best for our guests). Right, while this is all happening, cut some cherry tomatoes in half, season with salt and pepper and olive oil, place cut side up in a tray and in your oven at the lowest heat you can for the same three hours. We actually do this overnight at 50 degrees at the restaurant so they get really dehydrated and chewy! Voila - you now have oven dried tomatoes - you can adjust how dehydrated you like them by tweaking the cooking time. Next, find the best Kalamata olives you can and pop out the pips. Lastly, fresh mint sauce. This is nothing like that jelly gloop you buy in store but rather more vinaigrette and vibrant! Take a bunch of mint and chop it up finely. Put that in a small bowl. Add a pinch of salt and a tablespoon of castor sugar to the same bowl. Add 60ml of boiling water and stir to let the sugar dissolve. Then add 60 ml of good white wine vinegar and let it all cool. Fresh mint sauce - sorted. Now that your ribs are smokey, delicious, a little chewy but by no means tough, blast them over the coals for some nice grill marks and put them on a platter. Sprinkle over your oven-dried tomatoes and Kalamata olives and a few fresh mint leaf tips (got to make it look good). Finally, at the table and in front of your guests, drizzle over your fresh mint sauce - when that hits the hot lamb they'll do one of 2 things: cry with delight or be very rude and dive in before you've given them permission.

“I remember getting into food through cooking channels when I was in London. TV chef ’s told me I could cook just as well as anyone and I believed them. I’m sure along the way, some of my poor dinner subjects would disagree but by trial and error and mistake and experiment, I’ve managed to become some semblance of a self-taught chef. Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated. All my restaurants share the same approach: good ingredients done simply; less is more.”

HOW TO STAY FIT AND HEALTHY THIS HOLIDAY

With the festive season kicking off, the temptation for our healthy habits to slide is both alive and alluring.

Set your favourite song as your alarm Set your favourite power song as your alarm to wake up to in the morning. By this, we mean a song that lifts your mood and energy levels – one that will help you resist hitting the snooze button and get you pumped to jump out of bed and start the day.

48

Learn to say ‘no’ Through the festive season, there will be loads of events, from office drinks and Hello Joburg • Festive Season 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

social gatherings to family affairs and parties with friends. Be selective about the events you choose to attend and don’t feel guilty declining invites to ones that aren’t important to you. The holiday season should be a time to rejuvenate, rest and restore. You don’t want to enter the new year feeling exhausted and depleted! Never go back for seconds This might sound like a small change, but it will go a long way. Never go back for a second helping, no matter how tasty the buffet is. The more mindful you are, the less likely you’ll be to overeat. So, eat slowly and savour every mouthful! If you’re able to choose your food, don’t stop yourself from eating anything – just make sure the proportions of healthy eats are bigger than the unhealthy options. Drink lots of water on a night out When you’re out with your friends and they’re offering to buy you drinks, it can be difficult to say no. You don’t have to though – simply ask for a sparkling water with some lemon instead. It might not be

quite as refreshing as a gin-and-tonic, but you’ll avoid consuming unnecessary calories (not to mention wake up feeling fresh AF the next day). Or, you can always fall back on the “tomorrow is a big day and I need to be on form” excuse. Train for 15 minutes every day Set aside a minimum of 15 minutes a day for working out. It can be walking, running, yoga, HIIT, anything! On the days that you really can’t fit in a 15-minute training session, still, try to exercise for at least a few minutes to shake up your metabolism. Otherwise, schedule in a short 5-minute meditation session to slow down your breathing and focus on your body. Adapt your exercise routine Your normal training schedule is probably totally unrealistic over the festive season. For example, if you usually have a four-day routine, you should consider switching to something like one treadmill hill sprint session and one full body weight session a week. Think about what gives you the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to training and focus on that.

The smell of freshly baked mince pies straight out the oven. The chocolate baubles hanging from the Christmas tree. The bottles of Prosecco lining the fridge door. The festive season is undoubtedly the most magical time of the year, but it’s also the most glutinous, booze-filled and, let’s be honest, exhausting period in the summer calendar. So, here are our top tips for staying healthy during the holidays.

leisure activities

‘TIS THE SEASON OF GIVING A chance to give back this festive season

When it comes to the festive season, many of us abide by the social norm of providing a gift in anticipation of receiving one based on century-old traditions. But in the current economy - formally labelled a technical recession and characterized by escalating costs of living and a dire need for humanitarian aid for many – are there not better ways to ‘give’ this festive season?

Words Shevaun McCreedy Image Supplied

E

very year we receive gifts which will inevitably be re-gifted and the challenge is remembering who gave it in the first place to avoid the embarrassment of returning it to sender unknowingly. Whilst for children the magic of the festive season is the belief in the imaginary and the wonder of surprise – for us adults, there is magic to be found in the ability to make a difference in someone else’s life through the simple act of giving. And we don’t mean presents. This holiday period, we encourage you to consider making a donation to a charity on behalf of someone who you would normally have bought a gift for. Whilst the amount may seem insignificant, when you add up the value of all the individual gifts you would have bought, you will be able to make a sizeable difference in the lives of those for whom the festive season is just another month of fighting for survival.

Donating is also an amazing way to teach children about the importance of giving back to others and there are a number of initiatives which you can do with your children to really make them feel part of the process: 1. Santa Shoebox Project – this initiative provides underprivileged children with a gift, which they otherwise would not receive. You pledge a box (or many) which need to include some standard hygiene items (ie toothbrush, facecloth etc) as well as toy and educational supplies dependent on the child’s age and gender. Sign up and pledge a box at: K www.santashoebox.org.za 2. Rare Diseases South Africa (RDSA) – this NPO aids patients and families affected by rare conditions. Whilst independently they are rare, collectively they are common with statistics indicating one in ten South Africans are affected. By purchasing a Rare Bear for donation from

RDSA not only will you be providing a patient with a companion for hospital visits, but you will also be providing employment for the ladies at Kya-Kids who hand make these as part of an upliftment program. Visit K www.rarediseases.co.za for more info. 3. Santa Cause for Paws – for those who support animal charities, this is an amazing initiative which provides care packs for dogs and cats who will be spending the festive season in a shelter. They also include a few mandatory items (food and blankets) as well as extras depending on whether it’s a cat or dog, puppy or kitten (such as toys and treats). Pledge a box and find your closest drop off point at: K www.santapaws.co.za There is a sense of self-pride and and humility that comes from knowing that you have made a difference in someone’s life and the festive season is the perfect time to bring happiness to others - and the person on who’s behalf you made the donation. ADVENTURE TIME Kick your bucket list to the curb and try these instead!

The weather's great, spirits are high and there’s a certain sense of excitement in the air! Make the most of the holiday season with our top five leisure activities! GET ON YOUR BIKE Discover the city from a new perspective! Johannesburg is one of the world’s most treed cities, and one of the biggest man-made forests in the world so there’s no shortage of scenic green spaces to enjoy a bike ride. For a scenic trail, try the Modderfontein Reserve. This peaceful, privately managed 275-hectare reserve is crisscrossed by relatively flat hiking and cycling trails that are very well-maintained. There are four specially designed mountain biking routes ranging from 10km to 40km. Arden Road, off Ardeer Road, Modderfontein   K www.modderfonteinreser ve.co.za

Enjoy the thrill of 100m jump off of  a suspension bridge with a rubber cord attached to your feet, travel up the side of the western cooling tower in a lift to arrive at a viewing platform with a 360-degree view of Soweto or parachute from the top for an adventure experience like no other.  K www.sowetotowers.co.za  The Harties Cableway is the longest mono-cableway in Africa and offers panoramic views of the Magaliesberg and Hartbeespoort Dam. The pool is 800m from base camp, but hikes can vary from 15 minutes to eight hours depending on how far you want to go. entertainment AVOID THE SUN…

with these holiday entertainment treats! Ah the holiday season. A time for sunshine, outdoor activities and large groups of people in shopping malls OR you can avoid all of that and hole yourself up with the most entertaining games, movies and books available.

LET’S START WITH YOUR MOVIE WATCHING SCHEDULE. Holiday breaks mean more time to indulge. Netflix is great, but nothing beats a popcorn and slushie at the cinema. While the Christmas favourites will crowd the box office, these four films won’t push too much Santa down your throat while also keeping you highly entertained.

After years of horrible Transformers movies, the franchise plans to reboot on 20 December with the launch of the original story of everyone’s favourite Transformer Bumblebee. The movie Bumblebee takes us back to the 80s. A simpler time. Travis Knight also takes over director responsibilities. He found his feet in stop-motion animation with movies like ParaNorman so expect a bit of depth to the film interspersed with giant robots blowing things up.

Ralph Breaks the Internet arrives on 21 November and is the sequel to Wreck-It Ralph. Ralph and his adorable friend Vanellope von Schweetz use a connection to the internet to try to fix an arcade game. They explore a world of Facebook, Google and the like while also meeting up with characters from Marvel, Pixar and Disney. So, think Disney Princesses, Muppets and even Star Wars. It is an animation and kids will giggle but the movie has a lot of adult-only jokes that will have you chuckling under your breath.

Mary Poppins Returns sees Emily Blunt filling an iconic role portrayed by Julie Andrews. This sequel to the beloved classic looks intriguing. Mainly because Lin-Manuel Miranda makes an appearance. Miranda was responsible for writing, directing and starring in the broadway-hit Hamilton. No doubt his performance alone should be worth the cinema visit.

HOLIDAY READ

While movies are fun you might be looking for something social at home. There’s a way to ensure you entertain the extended family without having to leave the house. The book “The Floor is Lava and 99 more games for everyone everywhere” is a definite must-read. The book is written by Ivan Brett and is exactly what it says it is. A collection of games you can play everywhere. While the book will help you find fun activities for when the electricity cuts, it is also just an enjoyable read. Did you even know there was a game called Chappy Tomato? Nope. Didn’t think so.

Dream Lab 9 by Sketchy Bongo features guest appearances from Jimmy Nevis and Caleb Williams while melding together some more EDM, pop and R&B. It is the perfect summer soundtrack and a strong second showing from the producer. Each track has the potential to offer up a summertime hit so it is worth heading on this musical journey. Preferably while next to a swimming pool with your feet up.

54

Hello Joburg • Festive Season 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Chimera from Jimmy Nevis is a thing of beauty combining a host of production edits and blending R&B, Pop and EDM. Nevis’ voice runs as a foundation to the changing beats and it is soothing and sexy. Chimera is defined as “a thing which is hoped for but is impossible to achieve.” If Jimmy was hoping to achieve a 17 track journey that allows you to lie back and imagine being at the beach holiday you missed this year - he accomplished it.
