„Lifelong learning practices in Estonian countryside“ 7. – 9. November 2011

Dear reader, we welcome you in Estonia! The study trip brings you to Pärnu county, which is one of our fifteen counties and which is located beside the Baltic sea. Pärnu the city and the centre of the county is our summer capital. During the study trip we are visiting different villages and community centres focusing on lifelong learning practices, adult learning oppurtunities and the good practices of rural development.

Introduction of NGO Village Movement Kodukant Short overview of the Pärnu county Overview of the study trip

Villages area Murru-Suigu (NGO Murru Village Association) 450 people are living in the villages area Murru-Suigu. Suigu community centre is the heart of the area, it is managed by NGO Murru Village Association. It is a multi functional centre - there is a library, lot of rooms for different events, a playroom for childern and also an accepted cafe initiated by the local people. Every kind of educational trainings, seminars, information days are happening in this centre, as well different other learning opportunities for adults. It also is a good example of cooperation between different partners. The Murru Village Assosiation is cooperating with the Are municipality, local entrepreneurs, Suigu kindergarten and elementary school, Suigu library, Suigu socialhouse and the Suigu youth centre.

Study circel „On the second round – making garden furnitures with easy tools“ in Pärnu-Jaagupi Introduction of the project „Study circels: Do it yourself, do it good!“ (Heleriin Jõesalu) and one study circel (Liina Mägi). A study circle is a group of people who have the same interests and/or problems. It is a possibility for them to learn together and also from each other. In 2011 the project „Study group: Do it yourself, do it good!“ was started By NGO Village Movement Kodukant to rise awareness of lifelong learning aspects in the community development. We will hear about it more and also about one example.

Association of Halinga Huntsmen Association of Halinga Huntsmen members have also a house for their association, which they obtain with the help of different projects. They are using it for their activities but they are also open for childern groups to explain them the nature and also to let them discover it by themselves. Our scauts are in a good connection and cooperation with the association to learn about the nature and hunting.

Breakfest Morning meeting! Maarja Magdaleena Gild (Pärnu city) Maarja-Magdaleena Guild – The craft guild unites Pärnu’s artists and crafters who keep traditional handicraft methods alive and introduce them to everyone. Both children and adults find suitable activities in more than a dozen open studios. Visitors can communicate with the artists, view their work process and buy or order their art and handicraft items. There are many exhibitions, courses and workshops organised regularly. Lunch

Centre of Raeküla Vanakool (Pärnu town) Association Raeküla is a NGO, standing up for the people who live in the city part of Pärnu, which is called Raeküla. The main aim is to develop the cultural, educational and social enviroment of Raeküla. The old elementary school is reconstructed as community centre – there is an educational training centre, youth centre and culture centre operating together.

Dinner

Pärnjõe villages area (NGO Three Villages, Pärnjõe School, Village Club) Pärnjõe village society (NGO Three Villages) involves people from three villages historically belonging together in Pärnu County, Vändra Municipality. The organisation was started in 2004. Main activities have been doing volunteer work in cleaning up surroundings, building different objects in the local park, organising village reunions and celebrating important calendar events etc. In 2008 a local youth initiative group joined their NGO. There is a very good cooperation between three institutions – Village Society, Pärnjõe School and Village Club – all sitting in the schoolhouse. They have been carrying on local cultural heritage bringing people, old and young, together to teach musical instruments, our old dances, songs and plays. Childern have done a lot of research about local history and have created a museum. They are also very good at handicraft.

Tahkuranna village – Tahku cottage Tahkuranna Women Society was established in 1998. The main activities are develop their skillis for doing handicfrats, organising local cultural events etc. They have a good cooperation with the local cultural society, school and kindergarten. They also have a very good cooperation with the municipality, which leaded to the initiative to reconstruct the Tahku cottage for their and also fot the other local societies. They will also create there a space for the local youngsters.

Municipality of Häädemeeste. Roundtable for villages They formed a (village) roundtable for standing up for the needs and ideas of the village communities in the municipality Häädemeeste. They have regular meetings for discussions about the the important topics, which are affecting their everyday life in the villages.
