SAVING BELLA MORRIS Coffee & Cake Fundraiser Sat 27th Aug 11:00am onwards Last month’s issue highlighted the situation of Bella Morris, the three year old daughter of Peter Morris, who as a Community Matron for Over Wyre, has provided outstanding care and support to our family. Bella has been diagnosed with the extremely rare genetic condition of Vanishing White Matter, a disease which is currently incurable with life expectancy commonly 5 - 10 years from onset. The disease is so rare no funding for research can be provided by the NHS. Imagine how you would feel if a child in your family was given this diagnosis. The Coffee and Cake morning is being held to raise funds for vital research being undertaken by the University of Tel Aviv. Please join us at 2 Glenfield Gardens, off Smallwood Hey Road, Pilling PR3 6BZ ( next

to Glenfield Caravan Park) to support this worthy cause and pass a pleasant morning meeting friends old and new! Visit Bella’s website to see pictures of this beautiful little girl and read her full story at www.savingbellamorris.com Julie Speed 07961 310 471

POLICE NOTES During the last few months the area has seen many events take place such as Scorton village Steam Fare. This was a huge success as always, despite the down pour on the second day. Crowds gathered to see the spectacular show of vehicles from vintage cars, steam engines, army trucks and many more not to mention the great abundance of stalls and fairground rides. There were only a couple of issues the whole weekend. A security guard at the fairground on Gubberford Lane reported problems with a drunken male who had been physically and verbally abusive. The other was related to vehicles blocking Long Lane at Scorton. Cars are continuing to be damaged in the Garstang area which is happening mainly on Hazelhurst Drive and Parlick Road. The whole area has had flyers through their

doors asking people to be vigilant and we are also asking people to please report any damage or if they have seen anything relating to vehicle crime on 101. If you have a driveway then we are encouraging people to please park your vehicle overnight on your driveway as the incidents reported appear to be happening to vehicles that are parked on the road overnight. We have had a few reports lately of damage to Garstang School on Oak Road. The Rainbows pre-school blackboards have been broken and damage has been done to a seating area to the front of the school. The most recent has been damage to bird feeders. The school is now closed for summer so is even more of a target for crime. If anyone should see anything we would please urge you to call us. Other Crimes and Incidents in the area include ‘honesty boxes’ being targeted, taken or had money stolen from them. Tools have been stolen from a former restaurant in Cabus and a quantity of lead flashing from the roof has been taken. An offender daubed animal excrement on two vehicles for sale at a premises on Leachfield Industrial Estate. Several reports of cannabis has been reported in the area which resulted in a car being searched and cannabis being seized. One final note. Enjoy your summer but please keep yourself and your belongings safe. If you are out in the back garden make sure your front door is always locked and windows secure and have a lovely summer. ST. MICHAELS LADIES SOCIAL CLUB A warm welcome was extended to speaker Joan Halliwell alias ‘Betsy’, for the last in her trilogy, ‘Betsy Gets Married’. Dressed in a burgundy crinoline and pretty bonnet, her story began with laughter from the start. The description of her beau, Martin Freeman Fielding, ‘top drawer - no chance for a kitchen maid’, said her friend Rosy, but Betsy was smitten. Then Betsy, finding her voice in the Church choir, led to a rather confused courtship with her sad-eyed soldier. Members were drawn into the sadness of the resulting tiny baby girl, bringing tears to many eyes, then turning to gladness and never far from more laughter. This excellent, noteless, storytelling actress, with her ancient bottom drawer accent and lively gentle song to finish, was greatly enjoyed by members without exception.

As the proposed August event of a canal narrow boat cruise is unable to go ahead an alternative was needed and Pat Kaylor has kindly suggested a cheese and wine at her house, ‘Kilder’, Rawcliffe Road, St. Michael’s. There will also be a plant sale in Pat’s lovely garden. Judith Hunter

ST MICHAEL’S GALA The weather was kind! The parade was packed with an array of Rose Queens from surrounding villages along with their retinues. Brindle Band set the pace and Morris Dancers entertained, stopping at intervals to perform and bright floats enhanced the show along with youngsters in fancy dress. Mrs Cameron, the long retired Headmistress of the Primary School, presented the proceedings and introduced the retiring queen, Abigail Robinson. Abigail replied with an excellent speech. The 2016 queen, Lucy Phillips delivered her speech and presented Abigail and her retinue with gifts. The recently retired Headmistress, Mrs Brough crowned the new queen and received flowers from Lucy, as did Mrs Cameron, now retiring as chairman of the gala committee after many years. Prizes were presented to the winners of fancy dress and the art competition. The Brindle Band played again and Ben Parkinson, played a trumpet solo. Mrs Caroll, the new Headmistress and her staff were congratulated on coping with all the recent events, from recovering from a flood damaged school to hosting a very successful Gala. Well done to all. Judith Hunter

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Car Parking Following a very successful weekend car parking at Great Eccleston Lions are preparing for our home event, the Garstang show, on Sat 6th Aug. In appreciation of the help given by the North West Children’s Support Group (a voluntary organisation that provides holidays and social events for disabled and disadvantaged children) Lions donated £500 to help take local children on a trip to the zoo. Donations A £200 donation was made to the English Federation of Disability Sports - a charity working to make active lives possible with a vision that disabled people are active for life. Lions agreed £100 to support a local lady who

is cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats in aid of Leukaemia research at Christies. A local family held a garden party to raise funds on behalf of work done at the Rosemere Clinic at Royal Preston Hospital. Lions agreed to contribute £100 to Royal Preston Hospital. As always the Lions welcome new members or anyone who is just interested in seeing what they do. Information is available on the web site at www.garstanglions.co.uk or just speak to a member or simply come along to a meeting 3rd Tuesday of the month in the Royal Oak at 8:00pm. GARSTANG GARDENING CLUB Last month’s visits were both very well supported. Early on to Halliday’s farm at Bilsborrow where Mrs. Walling is the gardener, and all around the farm has been delightfully landscaped and blends directly into it’s surrounding fields. The high lights were a very restful outdoor

20

‘room ‘ complete with surrounded by restful hostas and the like, a relax with a glass of sunlight.

sofa and chairs and planting, ferns, mini wonderful spot for a wine in the evening

There was also an amazing large four leaved clover with rich purplish leaves that would make a good fodder plant if the livestock were to get in! The other gardens in the South Lakes were equally exciting, though not enhanced by the coach driver dropping the 40 strong party off at the wrong spot which made the ‘short walk‘ to Windy Hall Garden into a 2 mile route march! But the garden was great! Ambleside and Hayes at lunch then on to Orchard Cottage near Levens, 3/4 acre of a garden, plants man paradise. August has just one day trip out to the Southport Flower Show on Thurs 18th

Secretary for several years, is resigning and the club wishes to express its thanks for all the work she has put in. The Show not only gives members a chance to show off their gardening and associated skills in a lightly competitive way but also is an opportunity to remember members who are no longer with us in the many trophies that have been given or made over the years. The Show allows the public to see what we are about, a good advertising spot for the many local gardeners. On the Friday afternoon if you can help out, the work is only light, please let the team know. You will be more than welcome. The more formal series of talks starts at the Crofters Hotel on the second Monday in September, more about that in the next issue of Focus Magazine. Ben Andrews

GARSTANG HALF MARATHON Sun 4th Sept 11:00am It’s time to get those running shoes on and get yourself ready for the Garstang Half Marathon on Sun 4th Sept. Race entry is available online on the club website www. garstangrc.co.uk There are links to both postal and online entry. It is a very scenic route taking in Bowgreave, Claughton, Barnacre, Scorton, Cabus and Garstang. It isn’t what you might call flat (it is to the east of Garstang after all!) but there are a lot of hillier races out there! To encourage you we are introducing a bespoke medal this year if you like to collect a bit of bling for your efforts! The race headquarters is in the Sports Club next to the football/cricket pitch from approximately 9:00am. If you pre-enter then you would need to pick up your number from there.

Entry on the day will be available if you would rather wait and see how wet or sunny it is! There is also a rugby event on the same day so all runners should note there will be no parking provided. However Booth’s car park is free for 3 hours and only a short walk away. The High Street car park is closer but with a charge. There will be changing, showers and refreshments available on site, as well as some rugby to watch if you are bringing spectators! The race starts at 11:00am prompt outside the Royal Oak Hotel and finishes on the water intake road between the rugby pitch and the football pitch. Last year the winner was in just before 12:15pm in a time of 1hr 13mins, a good six minutes ahead of everyone else! The last runner made it in just before 1:45pm in a time of 2hrs and 44 mins. They missed the prize giving but not the finish! The club has now got 81 members and the membership fee is a mere £15, renewable each February/March. If you need more information please email me at frankmiller_bhs@hotmail.com Frank Miller

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLE Wines From The Rhone Valley The Garstang Wine Circle tasting for June had to be rapidly rearranged. Fortunately our club member Guy Pugh was able to make a great presentation of wines from the Rhone Valley. The Rhone Valley delivers a huge volume of wine from 23 different grape varieties, ranking second only to Bordeaux in terms of its annual production. The valley bisects neatly into the Northern Rhone, which gives us some of France’s

Guy presented a total of eight different wines:

The evening was rounded off with a Chateauneuf du Pape 2013 from Domaine La Boutinere. The appellation is very familiar, this property perhaps less so, but it nevertheless showed very well.

The evening began with two whites; the first, a 2014 Crozes Hermitage unoaked Marsanne from the Cave du Tain, followed by a 2014 Lirac - a much underrated appellation - from Chateau d’Aqueria. A trio of Southern Rhone reds came next. Firstly, ‘La Chasse’ 2014, a Cotes du Rhone from Gabriel Meffre; followed by Marcel Guigal’s Cotes du Rhone 2011 and then a Cotes du Rhone, now elevated to Cru status - ‘Les Cornuds’ Vinsobres 2013 from the Famille Perrin range. Two Northern reds then featured: the ‘Les Meysonniers’ 2013 Crozes Hermitage from Chapoutier and Domaine Faury’s ‘La

In his closing remarks Guy said that in both the North and South there are multiple appellations and any single tasting event would only hint at the areas full potential. Our next meeting is timed for Mon 19th Sept with an international presentation made by the Committee. This follows a short Annual General Meeting. OVER WYRE BEEKEEPING July is a really busy month for bees and beekeepers. While my bees get on with looking for flowers now the swarming is mainly over I have plenty to occupy me. That is one of the attractions of this hobby - once you know the basics you can ‘specialise’ as it were. Honey is just the start. Some people make candles, others focus on breeding bees. Like dogs, sheep, horses and cattle, humans have bred bees to improve and adapt them. ‘What’s a pedigree bee?’ I hear you ask. Well firstly quiet, good-tempered bees are important, if not essential. In our increasingly crowded world no one wants grumpy, stinging bees. And colonies do vary in their behaviour, some mild and gentle and others fiery and aggressive. We (that is the British Beekeepers Association) believe in breeding bees firstly for good temper.

28

Then a bee that is well adapted to our climate will do better Over Wyre than an imported Italian bee colony. Yes, you can import bees but there are strict importation laws with good reason. You don’t want to bring in disease with your foreign bee. So breeding or Queen-rearing as we call it can become the focus for some. Yet other Beekeepers get the learning bug. I did! I remember my first solo hive opening to this day. It started well enough, light smoker, take the roof off, lift off the supers - boxes where you hope the bees will store honey. And I started to check out the brood chamber or nursery box. Which is where I must have upset this normally lovely hive. Suddenly they flew up and even in my suit, gloves and boots I felt rather worried! Resisting the urge to run away I stood in this cloud of bees for what seemed like eternity, till they calmed down a bit, then I got my smoker to work and

OVER WYRE BEEKEEPING (cont) finally got the boxes back together. I still don’t know what I did wrong that time, but that led me to look for more training. Experienced Beekeepers run courses at all levels from complete beginner to advanced level. In the summer these can be at the hive, hands on practical. In the winter you can learn all about bees, making hives, extracting honey, even bee anatomy and disease. The more you know the better your beekeeping.

Which brings me to this month’s highlight for many of us, shows. Yes you can show off your hard-won jar of honey and win a prize. Even money! ‘Why?’ I hear you ask. Well, we also sell honey when we can, more on honey next month if the honey harvest is coming in then. Why not show off your product? OK. So how do you show honey? Well judges look at cleanliness of the jar and lid, the honey has to be the right colour and clear. No bubbles and it must have a lovely smell. This weekend was our local show, Great Eccleston. We had entries not only of liquid honey but also creamed and granulated honey, and a frame of honey still in the comb, mead, wax blocks and candles. It makes a lovely display. Kath Kindred

ROTARY Rotary funding assists St Michael’s St Michael’s School On Thurs 7th July the Headteacher of St Michael’s-on-Wyre School, Diane Carrol, thanked the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre for their commitment to help the school to overcome some of their uninsured problems following the serious flooding last December. The school was so badly effected that it had to set up a temporary facility within the Myerscough college complex. Rotary is providing £5,000 to cover the cost of furniture and decorating which were damaged but are not specifically covered by insurance. Rotary funds will also be used to re-equip the school’s computer centre.

St Michael’s Village Hall On Mon 11th July Laurence Turner, Chairman of St Michaels-on-Wyre Village Hall, thanked Rotary for the financial assistance of £10,800 to install flood protection in an effort to guard the hall against future flooding. The hall was badly flooded when the banking at the junction of the rivers Brock and Wyre was breached. The hall was badly affected due to the low lying land and the secondary breaching following a temporary repair. Repairs to the Village Hall are currently on-going and will hopefully be completed in early September. St Michael’s-on-Wyre Bowling Clubhouse On the same day Dennis Eccles, the Chairman of St Michaels Bowling Club, also thanked Rotary for the financial help of £300. This will contribute to replacing the floor covering in the clubhouse which was badly damaged.

The Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre has had a great deal of assistance from the residents of Garstang with their Christmas collection. The Club has received direct donations from colleagues in the Accrington Rotary Club and from the Garstang Inner Wheel Club.

The winners and the runners up participated in an all-expenses paid trip to The National Football Centre, St. George’s Park, Burtonon-Trent to play in the National Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland finals.

The Garstang Club is one of 68 Rotary clubs in the District of Lancashire and Cumbria Clubs (D1190). The district was devastated by the floods and was allocated funds from many UK sources. In turn Garstang was granted a part of these funds. Rotary Under 12 Football Tournament Rotary has previously reported that this year 13 teams from across South Lancashire competed in this tournament. The team from Garstang Academy, on entering for the first time, were Area Runners Up. The winning

Sixteen teams took part with the first round consisting of two leagues, each team playing seven matches. Garstang Academy won their semi-final game and moved into the final against Potters Bar. Potters Bar narrowly won the game 1 - 0 leaving Garstang Academy very worthy runners-up. All teams competing were presented with a certificate and the winners and runners up were awarded medals presented by Rotary RIBI President Peter Davey. 200 Club Draw The twice yearly “200 Club Draw” was held

CAT SMITH MP My Brexit Priority is You!

be foremost in the considerations. That is my Brexit priority.

Since my last article, the country has gone to the polls and voted to leave the European Union.

I love Britain, but recognise the most important thing that makes a country are its people. Without you, me, and everyone else here, Britain would just be islands. It is us, the people, who make it our nation. This is why my Brexit priority is you, and all my constituents, who I am proud to represent.

It’s important that all who believe in democracy respect that result. Going forward we will be spending the next years unpicking legislation and trying to get trade deals with other countries which are in the best interest of people like you. In order for local people to thrive we need to have a strong economy trading with other nations. The Government must now take steps to stabilise the economy, and to protect jobs, pensions, and wages. I will not allow any instability to be paid for by the working people of this country. Going forward the interests of ordinary British workers and families should

Frack Free Lancashire Last month I focused on the issue of jobs and fracking in my work in Parliament. This month I have been following up on work I have previously done around respect for local democracy. I requested a meeting with the then Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Greg Clark, to raise my concerns, and the concerns of many constituents who have been in touch,

CAT SMITH MP (cont) regarding fracking. Greg Clark had not confirmed whether or not he would meet with me on this when we had the Government reshuffle so I will start the process again with the new Secretary of State. I very much hope that the Government will respect the democratic decision taken by Lancashire County Council not to allow fracking to take place at Little Plumpton and Roseacre Wood. It would completely unacceptable if Ministers, who claim to champion localism, ignored the opposition of the local community and imposed fracking on Lancashire. I have been contacted by hundreds of constituents concerned about the impact which fracking will have on the local environment as well as on the UK’s wider climate change commitments. It is clear to me this is the wrong option for both Lancashire and our country’s energy future. I will keep you updated with how I progress with this request. Dogs on the Sea Defences at Pilling Since being elected as the Member of Parliament for the Lancaster and Fleetwood Constituency it’s been a pleasure to regularly attend meetings hosted by my Pilling Parish Council, primarily as a flooding forum with other agencies. At a recent meeting the issue of dog walking came up in the context of the flood defences which protect the village and surrounding area. It is not permitted to walk dogs along the sea defences. It scares the sheep and when off the lead dogs have been known to attack sheep. I expect everyone thinks their dog wouldn’t be the kind of dog to scare sheep but I wanted to bring it to everyone’s attention that dog walking at that location is not permitted and our local farmers would appreciate your co-operation with that.

FULL & PARTIAL DENTURES

Do you want well fitting dentures without needing implants? Do you have problems with your full or partial dentures? Do you want dentures that fit well, are comfortable and look fabulous? Are you prevented from choosing the foods you like? Do you get food underneath your dentures? Would you like dentures that look just like natural, healthy teeth? Do you want dentures that no one knows are dentures?

Dr Finlay Sutton

If the answer to any of the above is yes then Dr Finlay Sutton (a dentist who is a specialist in replacing missing teeth - prosthodontist) along with his in-house dental technician, Mr Rowan Garstang are here to help you, in Garstang. Finlay is renowned for his work with dentures and has patients travelling to see him from throughout the UK and from all over the world (Europe, China, New Zealand and USA)– he is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in removable prosthodontics and teaches other dentists and technicians how to produce top quality dentures. Please read Christina’s amazing story at the end of this feature. She came to see Finlay all the way from the United Sates of America. Finlay says: “I love making dentures and I am fortunate in having one of the world’s best dental technicians working with me. When it comes to dentures, the key to success is for them to be incredibly comfortable and look as natural as possible. They should mirror original teeth characteristics as closely as possible, so that no one knows they are dentures. Christina’s testimonial below sums up perfectly the level of service we provide.” Christina came to see Finlay, travelling all the way from Boston USA, for a full upper denture and lower partial denture. Her amazing testimonial:

Before I came to see Finlay the health of my mouth was an all-round nightmare. I became withdrawn and stopped smiling in fear of revealing the condition of my mouth. After 3 years of eating soft foods and puréed soups, I knew I could no longer avoid the problem. I went to see 10 well-respected dentists in New York and Boston, none of whom could help me. Disheartened and disappointed, I began searching the Internet, and eventually found Finlay. Now the rest is history. Even though I knew I was getting something very special I had no idea of the extremely caring way in which Finlay and his team helped me. I advise people considering Finlay’s services to think about the value of the confidence that comes knowing your dentures will be indistinguishable from real teeth and will do so without compromising comfort. Comparing the picture of my natural teeth 35 years ago with my photograph now, is testament to Finlay and Rowans’ achievement. The result has equalled my wildest dream. Shoot for the moon you just might get it! The treatment I received from Finlay and his team has been an excellent investment of time and money. www.garstangdrp.co.uk Garstang Dental Referral Practice Weind House, Park Hill Road, Garstang PR3 1EL 01995 606091 | office@garstangdrp.co.uk

SKIN PROBLEMS This month is national Psoriasis awareness month so I thought I would touch upon this and other skin complaints. Of course Psoriasis can also come with other problems that can affect joints and other areas but I shall focus on the skin which, if you treat right will lead to improvements in other areas too. When I see someone with the painful, irritated skin from Psoriasis one of the first things that I think about is that their body is either overloaded with toxins or not cleansing itself properly. The former is often through an inappropriate diet of too many processed foods, too much sugar (yes that troublemaker AGAIN!) and an overload of alcohol or other poisonous substances. The latter is usually a matter of having a sluggish digestive system – did you know you should have roughly one bowel movement per meal each day? Because the gut is slow our body begins to use the skin as a method of removing waste and so the skin develops weeping sores or itchy lesions.

Do you spend your evenings & weekends ironing? Why not let someone else do it for you?

IRON 4U

With regards to taking too many toxins in through our diet – I have discussed this many times but one extra technique that can be employed is to fast for a day. Did you know your body uses 70% of its energy to digest our food so a day of fasting allows your body to focus on healing. It also stops the body being overloaded with yet more food…have you EVER had a day of fasting? It can be a very powerful health giving tool. Did you know that the less you eat the longer you live? In addition, fasting aids insulin sensitivity thus helping people with diabetes. In fact, it has a myriad of benefits so give it a go! Getting our gut moving can be more of a challenge – mainly because we develop bad habits and poor lifestyle choices. Make

SKIN PROBLEMS (cont) sure you drink plenty of water each day as dehydration can affect your entire system. In addition, fibre from vegetables is more important than any other dietary fibre – forget all bran, eat vegetables! Lots of them. Do not avoid healthy fats – our skin craves the vital Omega 3, 6 and 9 from nuts, seeds and fish. You can also take excellent supplements that will help this. Saturated fat from grass fed animals is wonderful for your body and will NOT cause heart disease and the same is true of butter. For many of us our digestion is off because of modern stresses – threats to us that our body perceives as a danger to our life, even if it is an unexpected bill through the letter box. That stress shuts down our digestive system. The best way to deal with any stress outside of tackling the actual problem is to do some exercise every day. Your doctor may give you a steroid cream for a skin problem but please be aware, it is not an absence of steroid on your skin that has caused this problem. It may temporarily help but comes at a cost when used long term. Instead, look for the causes and develop a healthy lifestyle (you can still have fun and be healthy you know!) One of the best emergency products I have seen contains honey and is made by Apicare – a friend with weeping sores behind her ears used this and within three days it had healed and a week later had gone…never to return. Lastly, clear out all your regular body products that contain a myriad of weird chemicals that are an assault both on your skin and your entire being. Avoid sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and look for the ‘free from’ products to wash and moisturise with – most decent health food shops have plenty of options in this area. Nick Tofalos

Thanks to all, especially the walkers, bakers, tea makers and donators - almost £400 was raised for CRY and church.

DOWN TO EARTH As I write this we’re preparing to go to the RHS show at Tatton Park Gardens in Cheshire. The organisation to cater for three adults and two small humans has required lists spread over 3 sheets of A4, the booking of a dog walker, clothes for wet weather, clothes for warm weather, clothes for cold weather - and repeated musings over whether it’s really worth it. It’s the thought of a chilled glass of Pimms that keeps me going. In case you didn’t get to this show but fancy an interesting florally day out then why not consider a day trip to Tatton to see the new American garden. It’s been designed to capture the spirit of a New England woodland edge, weaving daisies with grasses to create a loose, wild feel. It also boasts Rudbeckia, Echinacea purpurea ‘Magnus’, asters and penstemons to remind us that many familiar herbaceous border plants hail from the United States. Another great day out is the Southport Flower Show. This year it’s being opened by celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott on Thurs 18th Aug – but our household is far more excited by Children’s TV star Mr Bloom who will be taking a break from his famous nursery to meet visitors at the show on Sat 20th Aug. If you prefer more horticulturally gifted celebs then you’ll find Carol Klein at the show on Thurs 18th Aug, Joe Swift, regular presenter on BBC Gardeners’ World is there Fri 19th and Sat 20th Aug and Christine Walkden, resident gardening expert, BBC The One Show will be there Sun 21st Aug. Sometimes at this time of year you can find bedding is starting to flag and your garden can lack colour. If you’ve got a bit of spare cash your local nursery will offer some solutions. My favourites at this time of year includes Rudbeckia which from August to October produces long-stalked

yellow, daisy like flowers with conical black centres. Another favourite is Salvia which can flower from May to November. It’s a woody based perennial carrying large deep purple flowers – but beware, it can be tender in cold areas so you either have to move it into a greenhouse or plant it as an annual. Also look out for Kniphofia, also known as Red Hot Poker which flowers from August to October. Anyway – got to go. Need to fix a trailer to the car to transport the picnic. Happy Gardening! BE PREPARED FOR FLOODING

Advice and Guidance for Children A health pathway is a simple, easy to follow guide explaining what you should do if your child is ill. For pathways on a high temperature, coughs, colds and breathing difficulties, diarrhoea and vomiting and constipation please visit the news section on our website: www.windsorsurgery.nhs.uk/news.htm

Members of community groups attended a meeting of the North West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (RFCC) for the first time in July.

Nurse Appointments We’re sad to say that unfortunately Nurse Katy Smyth will be leaving the practice at the beginning of August to pursue a career teaching the practice nurses of the future! Whilst we recruit and train a replacement we will have fewer routine nurse appointments available, in particular for chronic diseases (e.g. asthma, diabetes, heart disease). Please be assured that this will of course not affect the service we provide to those requiring core services such as wound care and urgent blood tests, or any chronic disease review appointments that the GP deems as urgent. Your patience is appreciated during this time. Patient Reference Group Are you aged 18-30 and would like to have a say about the services provided at Windsor Surgery? Our patient views are very important to us. In 2013 we set up a Patient Reference Group as a method of obtaining patient feedback. We work closely with our PRG to shape our services to best meet our patients’ needs. We try to make the group as representative as possible, and are therefore appealing for new members aged between 18-30. We are always happy to welcome new members of any age, so if you would like to join, please pop into reception for a registration form, or visit www. windsorsurgery.nhs.uk/ppg Find us on Facebook Visit www.facebook.com/WindsorSurgery and ‘like’ our page for the quickest way to receive the Surgery news. The Windsor Surgery Team

The RFCC links the Environment Agency with flood risk partnerships across the region along with representatives from local and central Government and the water industry. The aim of the event was to bring together experiences from the recent floods. One of the key messages that came out of the event was the need to make our partnerships work more effectively if we are to rise to the challenge of a changing environment and provide joined up, collective betterment for our communities. However the role and power of communities cannot be overstated. It is our wish that every home has a resilience plan, allowing them to be better prepared and warned. We’ve started work on this with flood action groups in Churchtown and Thornton and intend to implement this across Wyre. Within Lancashire the effects of flooding at Christmas are still being felt, with over 18% of households yet to return home. It was a collective miserable time but we are working hard with our partners to make things better both through practical measures and through the political process. Flooding affects both economic growth and public health. It was noted that sickness and depression rates were significantly raised eight to twelve months after a flood event. Some of the most significant effects during the events were to infrastructure and there were calls for better pre-planning and deployment to restore essential services and joint flood risk registers. Significant damage occurred to water and sewerage systems, power supplies and transport systems requiring a major repair programme. What significantly helps recovery if a flood occurs is: early warnings, allowing valuables and furniture to be moved before the flood,

BE PREPARED FOR FLOODING (cont) evacuations (often this is in the middle of the night in terrible conditions) and a move away from a throwaway society (insurance companies need to be prepared to consider repairing rather than wholesale replacement if this is acceptable and practical). What was very clear across Lancashire, Cumbria and Merseyside was that we share common problems, including the current protracted recovery process, as well as issues specific to our areas. However, support is available and we are working closely with our partners and residents to address the issues raised and ensure that Wyre is well prepared in the event of future flooding. There is still grant funding available to those who experienced flooding in December to help fund measures which improve a property’s resilience or resistance to flooding. INNER WHEEL At the end of June we presented a cheque to Women’s Aid in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. Their representatives gave us an insight of how the Charity deals with women who are victims of abuse. The following week we had a meeting where the Presidents for the next year were inducted. We are having a dual Presidency, the office is to be held by Mary Mason and Jan Winnard. We have had a very enjoyable year under the Presidency of Charmaine Wilkinson and Charmaine was thanked for all her hard work over the past year. Mary and Jan put forward their ideas for the next year and their Charity will be First

WORSE THINGS HAPPEN AT SEA

One day I fell off my new bike, and really hurt my knee. Went sobbing into Grandma’s house, for hugs and sympathy. “Oh never mind” said Grannie, as she soothed and mended me, “Your poorly knee’s all better now, and WORSE THINGS HAPPEN AT SEA!” She used to say this quite a lot, when things would go awry. Was used to hearing it from Gran, expected it, did I. When teapot broke, when budgie died, when Fido chewed settee, She’d sigh and say, “Oh never mind, and WORSE THINGS HAPPEN AT SEA!” I sometimes wondered just how worse on water it could be. Our seaside trips were scary knowing WORSE THINGS HAPPEN AT SEA.

I’d often catch her gazing at the photo on the wall. A handsome man in uniform stood smiling at us all. “Who is he Gran?” I asked one day. “I’ve never seen him here.” “Why that’s your lovely Grandad pet. The one I hold most dear.” “Where is he then?” I asked again. “Wherever can he be?” She wiped a tear as she replied, “YOUR GRANDAD WENT TO SEA!.” JM

It does this by raising funds from visitor donations and charitable activity and these funds are then awarded to local projects which benefit the environment, local communities and visitors.

For several years now, New Laund Farm above Whitewell has been working with Lancashire’s Countryside Service to offer a series of Tramper treks over some of the most picturesque land in the Hodder valley. Trampers are a type of all-terrain electric scooter which can tackle uneven ground, fields and mud allowing people who are less mobile to get out and enjoy some of the fantastic scenery within the Forest of Bowland .

The charity has its own website - www. championbowland.org.uk – which features details of some of the work it has supported in the past.

On Mon 1st Aug and Tues 2nd Aug, keen countryside-lovers will have the chance to climb on board Trampers as part of the Festival Bowland annual programme of events.

The photographs in the latest calendar were all kindly shared by residents and visitors to the area via the AONB website - www. forestofbowland.com/visitor-photogallery - and all the images submitted can be viewed there.

Accompanied by walking companions, the groups will be given a guided tour of the farm. They will hear all about the ongoing conservation work which encourages heather regeneration, wading birds and species-rich grassland. Given clear weather, the specially chosen route provides some wonderful views of the surrounding fells, including Parlick, Longridge and Pendle Hill.

Keen photographers are still able to upload their photographs to the website where they have the chance of being chosen as “photo of the week”, or even appearing in print in the AONB’s 2018 calendar. Copies of the new calendar can be purchased online for £8 at www.forestofbowland.com/ Forest-Bowland-AONB-Shop or in local Tourist Information Centres and businesses.

A morning and afternoon session is available on each of the two days, with the treks lasting around two hours.

BEN WALLACE A week is certainly a long time in politics and the last month has seen major changes. We are going through interesting times and as a result my office is receiving a high volume of letters from constituents giving their views. As your representative, this correspondence is extremely useful to me. It is always enjoyable for me to speak to constituents face-to-face during my visits and meetings around the constituency. Whilst national changes are underway, please be assured that I am continuing to work hard to represent our area. An issue I know is important to many people is proposed changes to community pharmacy funding. I recently met with local pharmacists to discuss this. We recognise how important community pharmacies are especially for more rural communities and I have made representations to the Government seeking clarification about proposed changes. It’s important that these services continue to benefit local communities. It is obvious to me by the number of complaints received recently about vehicles parking causing obstruction and highway issues in general that these issues concern residents greatly. People using residential areas for long term parking is a real nuisance. There is nothing worse than a Cul-De-Sac being blocked with dozens of cars therefore, I have raised this at the highest level and met with the Chief Executive of DVLA. I also regularly raise issues about the condition of roads and pavements with the County Council. People Over Wyre are quite rightly concerned about bus services, such as the lack of a direct service to Cleveleys. I continue to make representations to Service Providers

to try to improve the situation and will keep you informed of progress. Do not hesitate to contact me with your views on this issue. Turning to trains, many of you have been in touch to voice concerns about the lack of parking provision at Poulton Station. As a result a meeting with myself and Network Rail has taken place at the Great Eccleston Office. The need for additional parking for commuters and station users in Poulton was hammered home. Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of judging the Stalmine-with-Staynall Residents’ Association Scarecrow Competition. There was a Royal theme and the standard was outstanding from Monty Don, King of Gardeners to the pop group Queen. It was a very enjoyable day and I would like to thank all who took part and the Association for asking me to judge the competition. Our Gala Queens are something to be cherished and since being elected it has been an honour to host them in Parliament, the latest one to visit was Out Rawcliffe’s Gala Queen, Isobel Jenkinson who came down with her family. I hope they enjoyed their visit. One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is to travel around the Constituency and I do this at every opportunity. If you would like me to visit your business, school or event please do get in touch. If I can be of any assistance to you please email me at wallaceb@parliament.uk or write to me at: House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. My Office at the House of Commons IS on 0207 219 5804, my Constituency Office on (01995) 672977. Ben Wallace MP
