LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Twenty years ago community leaders took action on making the City Beautiful even better. They created this Foundation. Above all else, thank you to those early leaders who had the vision and drive to move forward and build on a grand idea. Welcome, old and new to the 20th Anniversary Homecoming Gala. Willy A. Bermello is President and CEO of BAP Development Group, LLC, a real-estate-development company specializing in mixed-use, urban, in-fill projects throughout South Florida. Founded in 1998, BAP has over 1,200 luxury residential units in South Florida, and investments in excess of $750 million. Bermello is also Chairman and Founder of Bermello, Ajamil & Partners, Inc., a leading South Florida architecture and engineering firm ranked by I nc . 500 among the fastest growing private companies in the United States. Mr. Bermello is a Florida registered architect with more than 30 years of experience in international practice. He holds Masters Degrees in Architecture and Planning from the University of Pennsylvania, and received his Bachelor in Architecture from the University of Florida, where he graduated magna cum laude and as AIA Student Silver Medalist. Mr. Bermello is a Past President of numerous organizations including: The Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, the Latin Builders Association, the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, and the Coral Gables Community Foundation (Past Chair 1992, 1994, 1994).

Bill Kerdyk Vice Mayor William H. Kerdyk, Jr.
Vice Mayor Bill Kerdyk currently serves on the Commission for the City of Coral Gables. First elected in 1995, he created and implemented the Trolley System, the Ponce de Leon Median Project, traffic calming measures, served as the Governor’s appointee to the Metropolitan Planning Organization, and is the creator of the PARKnership Program. He is also currently the President/CEO of Kerdyk Real Estate, Inc., Chairman of the Board, Bank of Coral Gables, and Chairman, Toyota World Junior Golf Team Championship (Japan). His civic affiliations include: Florida’s Public Service Commission Nominating Council, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, Super Bowl Host Committee, Orange Bowl Committee, Junior Orange Bowl, Rotary Club of Coral Gables, The Beacon Council, Dade Co. Association of Realtors, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center, Coral Gables Jaycees, Miami-Dade League of Cities, Leadership Florida, and Leadership Miami. Recognitions include: Outstanding Young Men of America, Small Business Impact Award from the Coral Gables Chamber, and the Twelve Good Men of South Florida Award from Ronald McDonald House.

Don Slesnick The Honorable Donald D. Slesnick II, Esq.
Don Slesnick is the managing partner of Slesnick & Casey, LLP, and has been in private practice since 1978, representing public sector employee organizations. He recently concluded 10 years as Mayor of Coral Gables and was 2009-10 President of the Florida League of Mayors. Active for many years in his profession, Don has been Chairman of the Florida Bar Labor and Employment Law Section, and Co-Chairman of the ABA State and Local Government Bargaining and Employment Law Committee. He has been active in the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Committee, and served two terms as Chair (1997, 1998) of the Coral Gables Community Foundation. A Vietnam veteran, Don also served as a U.S. Army advisor to NATO forces in Germany. Awards include: The Bill Colson Community Leadership Award from Leadership Miami; the Distinguished Service Award | American Bar Association; the Miami-Dade County Medal of Merit for Leadership, 2007 Sun Post’s 50 Most Influential Persons in South Florida; was chosen by South Florida CEO magazine as one of the Top 101 Global Leaders of South Florida, and was awarded the Friend of Foreign Service Medal by the Republic of China (Tiawan).

Every morning as I awake, I thank God for letting my family live in Coral Gables. When we travel, we are hard-pressed to find another community that offers such a healthy, safe and supportive environment. Jeannett and I are appreciative that we have had the good fortune to participate in a Foundation that is devoted to the betterment of our ‘City Beautiful’.
Pat Clarke Patricia H. Clarke
Pat Clarke was a woman executive in the moving and storage business in Miami long before most women did such things. She married a journalist and had three children, which started her in volunteering in school PTAs and Catholic Women’s organizations, among them the St. Augustine Council, Miami Archdiocesan Council, and South Dade Council. She received the ‘’Valiant Lady’’ award from the Archdiocesan Council, given only three times in 50 years. She and husband Jay have three grandchildren. Pat served as president of the University of Miami Women’s Guild, president of the UM’s Friends of the Ring Theater, founding member and director emeritus of the Coral Gables Community Foundation, and now, is president of Coral Gables Music Club. She is board member of Coral Gables Garden Club, and is a director of the Murray Dranoff Foundation, which conducts a world-renowned Two-Piano Competition. In 1998 she received the Spectrum Award for Volunteerism from the American Red Cross and in 2010 received the Woman of Impact Award.

Dan Finora Daniel Finora
Dan Finora has worked as an Academic Advisor and friend to all students at Coral Gables Senior High School for 52 years. Currently he works as a part-time Guidance Counselor with some administrative tasks, but he has been at Gables High since 1959 in a variety of roles, where he is affectionately known as “Fabulous Finora”. Mr. Finora began as a Business Teacher, Coached J.V. Football, was a Tennis Coach, Business Manager of the Athletic Department, and then became the Administrator for all Business Activities at the school. Although he officially stopped teaching in 1972, he ran the Athletic Department from 1963 until 2000. Officially, he ‘retired’ in 2003, but began part-time work the following year. Although originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Mr. Finora says he feels like he has always lived in the Gables. He served in the military for two years, attended the University of Miami from 1955 to 1959, and then began his teaching career.

1991 Established in August 1991 as the “Greater South Florida Charitable And Educational Foundation, Incorporated”, the Foundation’s first officers were: Wendell E. Ray, President Len Pagano, Vice President Gabriel Bustamante, Treasurer Susan McMahon, Secretary In September of ‘91, the name was changed to “Coral Gables Foundation”, and the new officers were: Ronald W. Robison, President David R. Winick, Vice President L. Kent Abney, Vice President Thomas J. Bradley, Treasurer Melvin C. Morganstern, Secretary The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce played a key role in establishing the Foundation. Our first offices were housed in the Chamber, and the Chamber provided a $16,700 loan to cover start-up administrative costs. According to our first Chair, Willy Bermello, who spoke (in 2009) about the Foundation’s history with the Chamber:
“Without the Chamber’s leadership and foresight, the Foundation would not have been possible.” Mr. Bermello’s leadership, along with support from other business leaders, such as Albert H. Friedman the late “Mr. Miracle Mile”, forged a long-lasting friendship between the Chamber and the Foundation.

History In February 1993, the Coral Gables City Commission voted to grant the Foundation $150,000 seed money in installments over the next two years, conditional upon the Foundation raising half that amount in 1993, and again in 1994. These funds were used for charitable and civic projects in the City including education, senior citizen programs, historic restoration, Hurricane Andrew (August 1992) relief, cultural programs, and other special projects. Our first annual fundraiser, the â€œPotpourri Auction Extravaganaâ€?, was held on November 19th at the Biltmore. DISPLAYED HERE are photos from various years. [1993 was short on documentation :( ]

History In a move to increase public awareness of the Foundation and to grow its endowment base, the Board of Directors hired our first “Executive Director”, Gloria Burns (pictured on the far right) on October 1st. Gloria served as Executive Director until 2008. Her popular “Gloria’s Gab” column (still published in the Community Newspapers) reported on Foundation activities as well as other community organizations and activities. The Foundation gathered at Board Member Virginia Miller’s Art Gallery in Coconut Grove (virginiamiller.com) to raise money for Prevent Blindness Florida. The evening featured art, great food, a poetry reading, a book review, and piano selections by Jay Clarke. The event was hosted by Northern Trust and Bermello Ajamil. The Lady Suzanna P. Tweed Scholarship Fund was established in late 1994. The first recipient of the Ralph V. Moore Jr. Scholarship for Cavalier Excellence was Roberto Villareal. Board Member Richard F. Wolfson “a rare and special person” passed away in November. The Foundation’s Auction Extravaganza was held in November and raised over $45,000. Bob Soper was the auctioneer and emcee. Founding Sponsors were Northern Trust Bank and Bermello Ajamil & Partners. Gold Sponsors included Eastern National Bank, EWM Inc., Realtors®, HealthSouth Doctors Hospital, Evensky Brown & Katz, and R. K. Grace.

History In February, John P. Fullerton of Fullerton Diaz Architects was elected Chairman, and the first Foundation quarterly newsletter was mailed to 3,000 residents and businesses. (at right: John Fullerton receives the key to the City from Commissioner Jim Barker.)
The Foundation moved to new office space courtesy of Commercebank. In March, grants were awarded to the Coral Gables-based Florida Shakespeare Festival, Project Real Life (baseball program for children), CAP of Dade County (scholarship funding), UM Volunteer Services (“Fun Day” for mentally challenged children), Coral Gables Symphony & Opera, Coral Gables High School, and to Switchboard of Miami (Senior Services). On June 15th, the Board voted to change the name of the Foundation to “Coral Gables Community Foundation” to better describe its purpose, and to distinguish it from private foundations. With a new logo and general information brochure designed by Adam Fullerton, the Foundation had a great new look. In the Summer, the City presented a check for $50,000 to match funds raised by the Foundation. In October, the first permanent donoradvised fund, the José and Mirta Calvo Endowment Fund was established by Board Member José A. Calvo II to honor his parents.

History Led by our third Chair, respected local real estate expert Ron Shuffield, President of EWM Inc., Realtors®, the Foundation moved from First Union Bank to Commerce Bank (now Mercantil Commercebank), then briefly to the offices of Blaire & Cole (now Bice Cole, PL, in Ocala, Florida). After that, we moved to City space in the historic Old Police & Fire Station building. In 1996, we partnered with Ponce de Leon Middle School and its Youth Environmental Science Club to landscape the campus. $6,000 contributed by HealthSouth Doctors’ Hospital helped establish a Parks Improvement Fund to assist the City’s Beautification Committee. Grants were also made to the May Van Sickle Free Dental Clinic for disadvantaged children, the Junior Orange Bowl Caroling Competition, CHARLEE Program, and Coral Gables Symphony & Opera, Inc. A preliminary study to establish a way to display history and artifacts in our City with the assistance and expertise of the leadership of the Historical Museum of Southern Florida evolved into the Coral Gables Museum initiative. In December 1996, the Foundation received a $10,000 grant to its unrestricted funds from the Calvin and Flavia Oak Foundation whose board was impressed with the efforts of the Foundation to act as a catalyst to improve our community. History In 1997, Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick became Chairman for a two-year term. In the Spring of 1997, the Foundation moved from the Old Police & Fire Station building (to make room for the blossoming Coral Gables Museum project) to a new home courtesy of First Union Bank. In April, the Foundation participated in the Merrick Festival. Despite rainy skies crowds turned out to hear Three Dog Night perform. Therapy Dogs, Inc. established a fun to help volunteers with expenses associated with visiting hospitals and nursing homes. In June, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables established a $50,000 endowment fund to support programs and services that benefit youth, elderly, and the disabled. The Foundation helped with a $20,000 matching contribution. An outgrowth of a Parks Improvement Fund, PARKnership was established by Bill Kerdyk, Jr. as a private/public project to renovate City parks and buy additional green space. The City agreed to match the first $100,000 raised. More than $1M was raised, including proceeds from the sale of $400,000 in stock donated by Robert J. Fewell. A four-year college scholarship was awarded from the José & Mirta Calvo Endowment Fund to a fourth grader who competed in an educational essay competition. On October 4th, the Foundation held its fifth annual fundraiser and first Gala “Merrick’s Dream Ball” at the Biltmore Hotel.

History In 1998 Commercebank again offered the Foundation free office space in their downtown Coral Gables building! The Foundation again received a generous $10,000 donation to its unrestricted fund from The Calvin and Flavia Oak Foundation, presented on January 20th, to now second-term Chair Don Slesnick by Fran Giuffrida. In March, the idea of a pilot program to provide the elderly in our community with transportation through a network of volunteers was brought to the Foundation by Carol Cohan, Paul Hunt, and Al Mindel (this would later become “Gran Tran”). Robert and Marian Fewell donated a .75 acre plot on the SE corner of Coral Way and Granda Boulevard (3 lots valued at $380,000—an unprecedented gift). From this gift to PARKnership, Fewell Park was created in their honor. David Segrera was presented the Ralph V. Moore Scholarship by Verneka Silva. The Lady Suzanna P. Tweed Scholarship was awarded to another Gables High student, Mayelin Prieto. On August 25th, Republic National Bank donated $60,000 to PARKnership. The Foundation donated $15,000 to the City for renovations to Sunrise Harbor Park. PARKnership donated $40,000 for improvements to Phillps Park in August. The annual Gala Auction was held on November 10th at the Biltmore. Honorary Chairpersons were Mayor Raul ValdesFauli and wife Francia Quijada.
History The Foundation Chair for 1999 and 2000 was prominent local businessman José Calvo. During his tenure, Mr. Calvo stepped up to serve as Chair of the first Coral Gables Museum Board, along with Founding Board Members Jim Beauchamp, Shelley Daniel, Mark Grossman, Zeke Guilford, George Kakouris, and Joe Matthews. Fewell Park was dedicated on February 23rd. Phillips Park improvements were completed in March. James Wooten, husband of the late Dodie Wooten (one of the founders of Esslinger Wooten Maxwell Realtors®, Inc. aka EWM) donated a 26-foot Sea Ray Cabin Cruiser to the Foundation. Our beloved Lady Suzanna Tweed passed away in her home on May 25th. Her legacy lives on in her scholarship fund. Another generous donation of $10,000 was made by the Calvin and Flavia Oak Foundation (presented by Fran Giuffrida). Coral Gables Junior Woman’s Club established an endowment fund. The Villagers committed to restore the fountain in front of the CGJWC. The Ralph V. Moore Scholarship was awarded to Jarrett Hoffman, and the Lady Suzanne Tweed Scholarship was given to Leidi Perez. The 7th annual Travel & Lifestyle Fund Raising Auction was held on November 7th. The Biltmore Hotel was the Presenting Sponsor and Seagram North America provided a full bar. Mayor Raul Valdes-Fauli established a fund to create an Archives Collection.

History “Mr. Miracle Mile” founding Board Member and much-loved member of the community, Albert H. Friedman passed away in February at the age of 99. His widow, Margot, was presented with a special proclamation by Mayor Raul Valdes-Fauli, acknowledging the impact Mr. Friedman and his late first wife Rose had on our community. On March 3rd, Olympic gold-medalist sailor Magnus Liljedahl established the Agneta Liljedahl Scholarship Fund to celebrate the life of his late wife, and the Team Paradise Fund, to help support sailing programs for the blind and disabled. Approx. 100 guests attended the annual Board Installation & Appreciation Dinner held on March 31st at the Omni Colonnade. On April 21st Renzo Weber, Gables High’s Student Council President received the Ralph V. Moore Scholarship for Cavalier Excellence. Class Valedictorian Kelly Kaltenbacher received the Lady Suzanna P. Tweed Scholarship. The first Athena Awards honored Marion Cline Krutulis. Nominees included: Jill Beach, Joanna Clarke, Nancy Barreto Hogan, Dr. Marta Perez, Anna Rentz, Lourdes San Martin, and Jeannett Slesnick. Our 8th annual University of Miami Travel & Lifestyle Auction took place on November 2nd at the Biltmore Hotel, attracting more than 200 guests. Local celebrity Bob Soper was our auctioneer.

History In 2001, PARKnership received a generous $10,000 donation from BellSouth. The Ralph V. Moore Scholarship for Cavalier Excellence was awarded to Barbara Zarandy and the Lady Suzanna Tweed Scholarship went to Anna Avery. Miami ballerina Celia Louise Merendi received her second Agneta Liljedahl Scholarship. Alejandro Diaz was also awarded a scholarship. Special thanks to R. Kirk Landon for creating the Executive Director’s Fund in 2001. PARKnership donated funds for new walkways and re-landscaping for Gables High’s 50th Anniversary. Over 650 people celebrated on March 3rd at the Biltmore, including highprofile graduates Janet Reno, astronaut Winston Scott, TV new anchor Beverly Counts Rodriguez, and actress Gail Edwards. A 1920s Picnic in the Park was held on April 1st to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the City. Ice cream sold by volunteers at the Foundation tent benefitted the United Way. Unsold ice cream was donated to the Youth Center. The 2nd annual Athena Awards was held on May 29th at the Hyatt. The winner was Jill Beach former WTVJ-NBC 6 Weekend Anchor. September 11th fostered an outpouring of charity. The Foundation worked with Joan Reitsma of The Giving Tree to sell patriotic ribbons for matching contributions from the Aid Association for Lutherans for the families of firefighters and police. The 9th annual Travel & Lifestyle Auction was held on October 30th at the Biltmore. In December, the Foundation matched a Rotary Foundation contribution to Camillus House’s “Points of Light”.

History Mary Young began her tenure as Chair with a Retreat for officers and board members held at Gulliver Prepatory. “Gran Tran”, the Foundation’s elder transportation project was taken over by Little Brothers–Friends of the Elderly and served the needs of more than 100 seniors. The Foundation continued to receive support from The Calvin & Flavia Oak Foundation ($60,000 over the past six years). Then Junior Orange Bowl Committee president Alberto Trelles established an endownment fund for the Junior Orange Bowl. Upon his untimely death shortly thereafter, the Fund was renamed The Alberto Trelles Junior Orange Bowl Children’s Fund. BellSouth donated $10,000 to the PARKnership Program on April 9th. On May 1st, the Ralph V. Moore Scholarship was awarded to Kapish Kumar Aggarwal and the Lady Suzanna Tweed Scholarship was awarded to Carlos Chaves. The third annual Athena Awards luncheon was held at the Hyatt Regency on May 28th. Myrka Dellanos, broadcast journalist and host of Primer Impacto for Univision, and international spokesperson for Save The Children, was the Award recipient. On October 15th, the 10th annual Travel and Lifestyle Auction was held at the Biltmore Hotel. Channel 4’s Bob Soper was the emcee. The Foundation held an Open House on November 30th.

History Spearheaded by Ron Shuffield and City Commissioner Bill Kerdyk, Jr., the PARKnership Committee began the “Adopt A Fountain” campaign. Walter Lista, Inc. was hired to do the restoration work. Kirk Landon donated $250,000 to the Coral Gables Museum project. Bill Kerdyk, Sr. and Jr. established the Kerdyk Family Trust Scholarship Fund for promising music students. In April, the Foundation participated in the Merrick Festival and sold coverlets. Also in April, two scholarships were awarded. The Ralph Moore Scholarship was awarded to Mackenzie Arnold, and the Lady Suzanna P. Tweed Scholarship, was given to Megan Kates. Miami Ballet Academy students Jillian Smith and Alejandro Diaz were awarded Agneta Liljedahl Scholarships. In June, Mayor Slesnick created a nonendowed donor-advised fund with the Foundation, and a Board Retreat was held on June 28th at the Biltmore. In July, Commissioner Kerdyk, Jr. donated $10,000 to the Foundation for the PARKnership Program. On October 7th, the Foundation’s 12th annual Travel & Lifestyle fundraising auction featured a “One Jazzy Night” theme and raised approx. $30,000. The completion of the PARKnership project to restore the four fountains at Granada and Coral Way was marked with a rededication ceremony on December 2nd.

History The Board was sworn in on January 21st at the Omni Colonnade. In February, the Foundation moved to Gables International Plaza. The new office space was donated by Board Member Stanley Davidson. Moving services were generously donated by Withers Moving & Storage. The Ethel & W. George Kennedy Family Foundation made a gift to the Foundation to support PARKnership. Bill Kerdyk made a $10,000 donation to the Foundation. John Martin’s Irish Pub & Restaurant donated $5,000 from their May 17th St. Patrick’s Day Festival to the PARKnership Program. Also in May, the Foundation matched Coral Gables Juniors scholarship funds for two outstanding students from Miami Christian School: Amanda Glass and Rebecca Morera. In June, The Kerdyk Family Trust Scholarship Fund awarded two scholarships to Abraham Burns and Stephanie Saffi. Miguel Flores and Carmen Luna received the Lady Suzanna P. Tweed Scholarship and Ralph V. Moore Scholarship, respectively. Claudia Kitchens won the 4th annual Athena Awards on August 31st. The Foundation’s 13th Annual University of Miami Travel & Lifestyle auction took place on October 29th at the Biltmore and raised the most money to date ($75,000). George Merrick’s historic home “Merrick House” was renovated and a grand reopening was held on December 11th. (The Foundation made a donation toward the cost of the kitchen cabinets).

History Sonesta Hotel & Suites was the site of the annual Installation and Appreciation Reception hosted and underwritten by General Manager George Cozonis. The ceremony took place on December 16th, 2004, and Yoli Woodbridge, President of YW Associates, was sworn in as 2005 Chair. Flemingâ€™s Prime Steahouse & Wine Bar held a Grand Opening Charity Night Benefit (3 days before their official opening) on February 4th. Proceeds from this event were donated to the Foundation. Kerdyk Family Fund Trust Scholarships were awarded to Catherine Dunlap and Claire Gentry, and Yara Travieso (who also received a scholarship from the Agneta Liljedahl Ballet Scholarship Fund). The Lady Suzanna P. Tweed Scholarship was awarded to Greisy Martinez, and Brandy Davila received the Ralph V. Moore Scholarship. Coral Gables attorney Bonnie Blair celebrated her birthday by establishing a donor-advised fund to help nurture a sense of philanthropy in her children. The 5th annual Athena Award was presented to Sara Barli Herald who received a standing ovation for her pro bono work in the area of juvenile dependency, legal work for CHARLEE of Dade County Inc., JLM, HRS, Jackson Memorialâ€™s Child Protection Team, and Temple Beth Am. The annual University of Miami Travel and Lifestyle Auction was postponed until 2006 to give everyone time to recover from Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma.

History The 2005 University of Miami Travel and Lifestyle Auction was held on January 12th, 2006. Sacha van Tuijn was awarded the Ralph V. Moore Scholarship for Cavalier Excellence and Jeanine Navarrete received the Lady Suzanna P. Tweed Scholarship at the Gables High Awards Ceremony held on April 5th at the Biltmore. The Foundation helped sponsor the Junior and Senior Achievement Luncheon held April 25th at the Junior Woman’s Club. In the summer, an anonymous donor bequeathed two gifts in excess of $250,000 to the Foundation and to Camillus House. Youth For Tomorrow disbursed $5,000 ($2,500 donated by Evensky & Katz with a matching $2,500 grant from the Executive Director’s Discretionary Fund) to local charities. On August 8th, 2006, Wine Lovers gathered for the fourth dinner hosted by the Hyatt Regency Two Sisters Restaurant. The 6th annual Athena Awards was held at the Hyatt Regency on September 8th. Janet Reno, the first female U. S. Attorney General was the honoree. The Host Sponsor was Williamson Cadillac, and award Finalists included: Mary Young, Sister Jeanne O’Laughlin, Jean Ann Caceres-Gonzalez, Evelyn Greer, and Deborah Natansohn. The Coral Gables Museum’s official groundbreaking was held on Sept. 20th. In October, Evensky & Katz Wealth Management firm created a Fund with the Foundation for the purpose of supporting worthy charities and programs in our community.

History The Foundation, under the leadership of Howard Glicken of The Americas Group, developed the “Greening of the Gables” initiative to restore the Gables’ tree canopy ravaged by hurricanes. This project was initially funded with proceeds from the Gala held on January 19th at the Biltmore. The annual Board Appreciation and Installation reception took place at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse on February 27th. The Executive Director’s Fund awarded grants to the May Van Sickle Children’s Dental Clinic, the Southern Most AIDS/ HIV Ride, Team Paradise, Informed families, matched the Ralph V. Moore Scholarship, and matched federal grants awarded to Presidential Service Scholars. We mourned the passing of a dear friend, Canon Verneka Antionette Stirrup Silva, aka “Miss Silva”, on February 19th. Shelly Roberts’ Circle of Love Fund made an initial donation of $5,000 to the Children’s Cancer Fund at Miami Jackson. On Tuesday, April 3rd, Starbucks hosted the first-ever Latin American Coffee Festival. Manager Sean Fredericks presented the Foundation with a gift to help with the Greening initiative. History Thanks to the generosity of Ralph Sanchez of Old Spanish Village, Jeannett Slesnick began her term as Chair in new office space at 3001 Ponce de Leon Blvd. The 2nd annual Greening of the Gables Gala was held on January 25th, 2008 at the Biltmore. Celebrity Judge Marilyn Milian was the emcee. Sponsors included the University of Miami, Bacardi U.S.A., Inc., and Mercantil Commercebank. 2008 also saw the exciting development of two new initiatives: GablesHomePage.com and CoralGables@HOME. With the help of Kirk Landon and The Kirk Foundation, including a generous $250,000 donation, the Foundation raised another $50,000 to help launch CoralGables@HOME, on February 2nd, 2009. GablesHomePage.com participated in “The Information Needs of Communities in a Democracy” seminar on February 16-17th. Created as part of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s “Community Information Challenge” the site serves our community as a hyperlocal news source and virtual town square. The Knight Foundation donated over $325,000 with the Foundation adding another $35,000. The 3rd annual Greening of the Gables Gala was held on Jan. 30th at the Biltmore. Our host for the evening was Michelle Gillen of WFOR TV. Sponsors included Bacardi U.S.A., Inc., Baptist Health South Florida, and The Allen Morris Co. On February 10th, 2009 the dedication of “Perrin Plaza” offered sneak peek inside the still-under-construction Coral Gables Art Cinema.
History The Foundation swore in a new Chair at the Installation and Appreciation Reception, (serving a two-year term beginning February 23rd, 2009) Jerry Santeiro, and a new Executive Director, Andria Hanley. Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar generously hosted our annual Installation & Appreciation Reception on February 23rd. On March 4th, our Membership Committee hosted a membership reception in the historic Old Spanish Village Sales Gallery. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres courtesy of long-time Foundation supporter Elizabeth Silverman of Catering by Lovables. A Gables Homepage “Under Construction” Preview Party was held on June 30th. Chair Jerry Santeiro introduced the Gables Homepage team: Beverly Mills Gyllenhaal, Matt Bokor, Onelia Collazo Mendive, Brian Schlansky, and Claudio Vera. On May 22nd we held a joint event with the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to attend the play “Havana Bourgeois” at the Miracle Theatre. After the play, guests went backstage to meet the leader actor CBS “Cold Case” star Danny Pino. In the summer, PARKnership provided seed funding for the Waterway Renaissance Project (led by Peter Hairston, Bruce Brockhouse, Arva Moore Parks, Luis Perez, and Richard Pettigrew) to refurbish the bridges in the Gables. Scholarships were awarded to Karen Forbes (Miami High Class of ‘61), Gomez (Lady Suzanna P. Tweed), and Maria Fernandez (Ralph V. Moore Scholarship).

History In the first year, CoralGables@HOME grew to over just over 100 members. As a fund raiser they launched the “Dishing It UP!” Tour of Kitchens on January 22nd. The annual Board Appreciation and Installation reception took place on January 26th at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse. Fleming’s again graciously hosted the Foundation and friends for our 1st annual “Mad Hatter” reception on March 25th. Gaetano’s Ristorante welcomed the Foundation on June 16th for a Gala KickOff Party. 2010 Legacy Award honoree (Jeannett Slesnick) was announced and artist George Rodez exhibited the inpiration artwork piece “Rêver de Vous” to promote the Gala theme. A 2nd Gala Kick-Off party was hosted by Tiffany & Co. in the Village of Merrick Park on October 13th. The Coral Gables Museum opened its doors to the community on October 10th at 10:10 AM to celebrate the completion of the building and renovations at 285 Aragon. The “J’adore Paris” Gala and Cabaret After Party began with a cocktail party upstairs featuring a dance floor under a 14’ high Eiffel Tower base and signature cocktail by Bacardi U.S.A., Inc. For the first time, the Foundation held two parties. The dinner and awards downstairs, followed by an After Party upstairs. On November 5th, a memorial pep rally was held for much-loved, former Gables High Principal Ralph V. Moore (1977-93). The Stephen and Jeanne Siegel Family Fund was established in December.

History Bill Bonn began serving on the Board as Chair of the Development Committee in 2009. He also served as Secretary and Chair Elect in 2010. A big fan of all things Coral Gables, he is proud to reside in the historic former home of legendary Florida Senator Claude Pepper. The Board Appreciation and Installation ceremony took place at MORTON’S The Steakhouse on January 12th. The 2nd annual “Dishing It Up!” Tour of Kitchens was held on January 29th and culminated in an outdoor luncheon and informal fashion show at the picturesque Country Club Prado entrance. CoralGables@HOME benefitted from the Rotary “Chance & Dance” fundraiser held on March 4th. MORTON’S hosted our 2nd annual “Mad Hatter” reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres on the patio on March 22nd. Participants in the Evensky & Katz “Motivated Youth program awarded $18,000 to local charities on March 26th and experienced philanthropy first hand. Manuel C. Diaz of Manuel Diaz Farms donated more than $95K worth of trees to the PARKnership program. The City Commission accepted the donation on April 26th. In the summer, scholarships were awarded to: Manuel Hartman (the Kerdyk Family Trust Scholarship), Federico Zegers (the Lady Suzanna P. Tweed Scholarship), Steven De Niccola (the Ralph V. Moore Scholarship), and Kevenique Allen (the Grant and Bridget Daughtery Nursing Scholarship).
