Home Security For 150 Years By HSN Staff I was talking to Dan Burdick at Burdick’s Locksmith about the fact that we don’t give a lot of thought to the simple, everyday objects in our lives and one of the most universal examples of this effect is the common key. They are small objects, with a big history; one that happens to coincide rather closely with that of Helena, itself. Okay, that isn’t entirely accurate, as the key has its origins in ancient Egypt, circa 4,000 years ago, but those were big, clunky things - the technologies of the time, specifically metallurgy, required that they be sturdily-built, so as to withstand the pressure of torque needed to release the lock’s catch. No, what I’m talking about is the modern key which, today, we all know and ignore. That really came about in 1861 when expanding on the pin tumbler lock – also of his own invention and the basis for modern locks, even to this day - Linus Yale, Jr. patented the flat key. Although the patents have been updated every 20 years or so, the basis of which has not been significantly changed since then. Yes, the technology (referred to in professional locksmith circles as “credentials”) in your pocket is the same as was used over 150 years ago. What does this have to do with Helena? In 1864 - 3 years after the flat key
was patented for use in safeguarding the vaults of banks - four miners, hailing all the way from Georgia, struck gold in the gulch that they called their “last chance,” beginning the inrush of prospectors and entrepreneurs who would found our city. As the mansions of the time were built, those wealthy homeowners employed the latest security technology to keep family and possessions safe from burglars and brigands, for which they employed the “Yale Magic Infallible Bank Lock.” “That very same key [Yale Lock CO, patent 1861] is one of our top sellers in 2013. In fact, out of a junk drawer, on a mansion up here on the west side, I was going through a bunch of keys. There was a Yale key, with the original patent date and everything. So, I took that 1800’s key and a 2013 cylinder, put in pins from my 2013 kit, that 1891 key works the 2013 lock, because it’s the exact same thing, brand and everything,” says Dan Burdick, of Burdick’s Locksmith. Dan is passionate about his work and is glad to explain how it all works, the history of his craft and what the industry offers for both businesses and individuals, looking to secure their property. Throughout future issues, Burdick will regularly provide information on the nature of home safety, the challenges to the industry and the advances made to keep your home protected.
