Greetings everyone, How great is it the TripleCrown of Patriotic Holidays in America – Memorial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day - are observed within a six week period?

Yes, I’ve written about this before, but anything that causes us to lift up our Nation and celebrate our Freedom bears repeating.

As stand-alone events, these Holidays are important in their own right. But here in Pelham and Shelby County we are blessed with opportunities to make these days memorable in ways that are truly special.

For example; the Memorial Day activities at the Alabama National Cemetery allows volunteers to participate in the placing over 4200 Flags on the graves of our Veterans. You may

not be able to do this every year, but I encouragwe you take the time to help place the flags at least once; it will change your attitude regarding the word “Sacrifice.”

For the past eight years, the City of Pelham has partnered with the Cahaba Valley Elks to host an educational Flag Day program at the Pelham Civic Complex. This year the partnership was expanded to include the Shelby County Exchange Club and American Legion Post 555. A very special feature of this year’s celebration was the Introduction of Miss Alabama, the former Miss Shelby County and graduate of Pelham High School (PHS), Miss Hayley Barber. In fact, the Flag Day Celebration was her first public appearance having been crowned only the night before.

And the Grand-Daddy of all Patriotic Holidays, The 4th of July, was brought in with the 3rd Annual “Fire on the Water” Fireworks Extravaganza. Many

enjoyed the Independence Day celebration a day early at Oak Mountain State Park, Sunday, July 3rd.

The list of Pelham High School Standouts continues to grow.

Hayley Barber, our reigning Miss Alabama, represents the third Miss Alabama to come from PHS. Clemson Head Coach and PHS Graduate, Dabo Swinney, was recently recognized by proclamation. Now our congratulations go to another Pelham High School Graduate, Judge Lara Alvis, who has been sworn in as Shelby County’s newest Circuit Judge. Way to go Pelham High. It’s a Great Day to be a Panther!

Where we value the contributions of all of our First Responders, there are three to be commended and recognized for recent accomplishments and awards. Pelham Police Officer Carl Perkinson recently received the Enrique Carmarena Award by the Cahaba Valley Elks. Enrique Carmarena was a DEA Agent who died in the line of duty while interdicting drugs along the Mexican border. Pelham Police Officer Brad Jordan and Fire Captain Chris Carpenter were recently named the Alabama

Police Officer and Firefighter of the year by the American Legion at their annual conference in Huntsville. Congratulations to these dedicated public servants who represent us so well.

Lastly, in the last edition of the Pelham City News I presented a laundry list of projects that are underway in Pelham, or soon to be so. Since then, the Alabama Supreme Court has ruled in favor of HealthSouth and cleared the way for a rehabilitation hospital to be built in the eastern part of our city. This will be a 44,000 square foot facility with 34 beds.

This project is now on the fasttrack; the property has already been acquired and the first pre-construction conference has been held. Congratulations to HealthSouth, former Mayor Don Murphy, developer Roy Martin and Ms. Elaine Moore, hospital advocate, for not giving up on this project. This is good news for everyone.

FROM COUNCIL PRESIDENT HAYES I hope you are having a great summer. It has been very busy here in Pelham the last few months. It is exciting to see so many things happening and to feel a new energy in our community.

May was an unusually active month for city events. We were able to spend an entertaining and enlightening day with our Pelham fifth graders during Youth Government Day. The Exceptional Anglers Gone Fishin’, Not Just Wishin’ event for students with disabilities provides an opportunity for children and volunteers from around this region to gather at Oak Mountain State Park and enjoy having fun together in a wonderful setting.

The Making Miracles Luncheon benefiting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals filled the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena Banquet Hall. This event was very personal for many of us, and it was great working with old friends Dabo Swinney and Tyler Watts, as well as new friends like the recently crowned Miss Alabama, Hayley Barber, who organized this fundraiser. We were delighted for Hayley when she was named Miss Alabama June 11th. Hayley and Maddie Gathings represented Pelham extremely well in the Miss Alabama Pageant.

Alumni Football Game was a big success. I want to thank former Panther standout Eli Beall for suggesting this event and for Coach Tom Causey pulling together a team of volunteers to make this event come together very quickly.

It was a rare opportunity to see so many old friends and teammates in one place. Naturally it was also very special to be on the field with my father, brother and son, as well as Dabo and Tracy Swinney who are like brothers to me. Fortunately Dabo, Eli and my son, Robert, made some great plays to pick me up and help me avoid feeling quite so old.

The Pelham High School graduation ceremony is always inspirational and this year was certainly no exception. This ceremony is sentimental to me as a graduate of PHS and the father of two recent PHS graduates. I also want to mention the Worship in the Park event, which had to be cancelled because of a surprise downpour. I am looking forward to this being rescheduled as soon as possible and for the opportunity to start having many more community events in the park after the City Center construction is completed.

The activity certainly didn’t end with these events. In addition to the ongoing construction of two new schools and the PHS renovations underway, the design of the

Pelham Recreation Center is being finalized, and the designs for both our Trails/Greenway Initiative and our new library have begun.

The recreation center construction is scheduled to begin in just a few months and we hope to start some work on Phase 1 of the trails/greenway this fall along with the construction of the outdoor basketball and sand volleyball courts. We are hoping that the design for the new library can be completed in time for its construction to also begin this year and are pursuing significant grants for the library like those recently awarded for both the trails/ greenway and recreation center.

The engineering work related to adding a second westbound lane to County Road 52 between I-65 and Hwy 31 recently started.

We are very happy to get this project officially underway and are encouraged by the approvals related to the Valleydale Road widening to Hwy 31, as well as recent progress related to the Hwy 261 Widening Project that make us hopeful that this project will get added back to ALDOT’s schedule very soon. These key projects along with new connector roads currently being analyzed

would be extremely beneficial and we continue to work diligently with the state, county and surrounding cities to address the transportation issues in this area.

It was a wonderful feeling when we were notified of the final approvals for the Bearden Road Sidewalk Project and then both the utilities relocation and construction parts of this project were awarded after a long journey.

It was also gratifying to see the demolitions completed related to the 261 Flood Mitigation Project that I have been involved with for much longer than I have been on the city council. We anticipate receiving final approval for this rest of the flood mitigation work very soon and the contractor is standing by. Unfortunately, when projects include significant federal funding, the schedules are virtually always much longer and there are many additional complications.

It’s hard to believe another school year has come to a close and we’re already well into summer. We finished our school year strong with many celebrations and successes.

In early May, we enjoyed hosting the fifth graders from Valley Intermediate when they spent the day visiting the Pelham City Schools Central Office and several city departments during their annual Youth Government Day field trip. Later that month, over sixty former football players hit the field in the first Pelham Panthers Alumni Flag Football Game. It was a sight to see our alumni reliving many nights under the lights of Ned Bearden Stadium, and we look forward to more alumni events in the future.

We celebrated the accomplishments of the Class of 2016 at the Pelham High School graduation ceremony on May 26. Graduates heard inspiring words about being part of the Pelham family and the journey ahead of them from class president, Jenna Bennett and valedictorian, Peyton Strickland. Then, all 200 graduates filed through a tunnel of teachers and coaches who greeted each graduate with hugs, high-fives and congratulations as they made their way to the stage to accept their diplomas. The future is bright for these young men and women, and we wish

them all the best!

We continue to see progress on the construction of Pelham Ridge Elementary and Pelham Park Middle and several renovations at the high school. We’re seeing things come together at Pelham Ridge as the exterior is nearing completion, and work is moving along inside the building. The site preparation work at Pelham Park Middle is on schedule, and it won’t be long before we see that building taking shape as well.

Our elementary school principals, teachers, and staff are to be commended for the teamwork, patience, and energy they have put forth in the packing and preparation for the school moves taking place this summer.

Many other teachers are devoting their time this summer to participation in a wide variety of professional development classes that will benefit our students and our schools. Just like our students, our teachers are always learning and pushing their knowledge to the next level. We appreciate their dedication and enthusiasm, and look forward to seeing great things in our classrooms in the fall.

For our students and parents, we’ve transitioned to online registration for student enrollment.

The online system, called InfoSnap, is a web-based portal for registering and updating student information. This solution eliminates the need to complete paper packets and will create an

efficient means for updating information year after year. Remember to complete online registration for your student by July 8. HAYLEY BARBER is the new MISS ALABAMA! Road to Miss America

Pelham’s own Hayley Barber was crowned Miss Alabama Saturday June 11. When asked what her emotions were while standing on stage waiting for the big reveal she responded, “I was really at peace. I had no anxiety and I was not scared or nervous.” When they called her name, she said she had no thoughts and that she felt like a ghost on stage.

This was Hayley’s fifth time competing for the Miss Alabama title, and she still has two years of eligibility left.

Hayley first entered the pageant world when she was in the sixth grade by competing in local beauty walks. She continued the beauty walks for several years, but later upgraded by competing in Miss Alabama pageants, starting with Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen, where she placed second runner up. When asked why she entered the pageant world to begin with, she said, “I knew I was going to have to pay for my own college. I could do that with scholarships or I could do it with loans.” After she got her first taste of scholarship money, she decided to continue with the pageants.

During her five years of competing for Miss Alabama, she has received $65,000. At her crowning on Saturday, she received $13,800 in cash scholarships and also received a full year of tuition and fees at UAB (an in kind scholarship), where she studies marketing. Because of the Miss Alabama pageants, she will graduate college debt free and even have some left over for Optometry School, her chosen career path. Over the years,

she has earned a number of awards through the pageant, including the Community Service Award when she raised over $55,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network (Hayley now advocates for CMN).

She also raises funds for her philanthropy— Sight for Small Eyes.

Hayley encourages eye examinations at a young age through this program, and the money raised goes to help children with poor vision.

Hayley’s Miss Alabama experience has only just begun. She will now embark on a journey to compete for Miss America in Atlantic City, New Jersey, which will air on ABC September 11, at 8 P.M. CST. Barber says she is excited to meet someone from every state and have 49 new friends.

She has had tremendous support from her family, friends, and other contestants. Hayley stated that her father in particular has been very influential and she says she could not have done it without him.

PHS Softball wins Area Title A chat with Coach Sabrina Tutchtone

American Legion Matthew Blount Post 555 honors Public Safety Officers At the May 5 meeting of American Legion Matthew Blount Post 555, a hardworking member, post photographer Chic Cecchini was recognized and given a plaque for his outstanding and professional work as its photographer.

Former First Vice Commander Kenneth Paschal was awarded the Post 555 Legionnaire of the Year.

Since Kenneth has been in charge of membership, the post has grown to 105 members.

“This is important to us because we want to reach out to the community and let the community know, through the American Legion, that there are police officers and fire fighters out working for them,” Vice Commander McDaniel said.

Each year, American Legion posts give National Law Enforcement Officer of the Year awards to local well-rounded public safety officers who have exceeded the duty in their positions and have

demonstrated a distinct pattern of community service coupled with professional achievement.

Pelham Police Chief Larry Palmer selected Detective Brad Jordan, and Pelham Fire Chief Danny Ray selected Captain Chris Carpenter. Each chief listed several reasons for Jordan and Ray being selected for recognition.

“We want people to know that there are individuals out here doing this on the home front,” Vice Commander McDaniel said, “Fighting and protecting them every day.”

Congratulations to both of these upstanding public safety officers.

“Our team had a rocky start to this season, but they grew up and conquered so many challenges.

The players had to learn to trust each other and work together, and as a coach, I am thankful for the journey...now. If you had asked me in March, I am not sure my response would have been so positive, but by the end of April, everyone could definitely see a difference in the maturity of this team. I am extremely proud of how they turned it around, and now we are all looking forward to next season.”

Coach Tutchtone went on, “Next season’s Area will be extremely tough, with Pelham playing with defending 6A State Champion, Chelsea and the 5A Runner-Up, Helena, but we are looking forward to getting better every practice and every game to prepare for the next post season. As we learned this year, the end is truly all that matters!

Set your goals and keep fighting through the rough spots; those are valuable life lessons!”

Things set up well for Pelham softball next year, though. They were very young this year with

seven freshmen and only one senior.

This season’s schedule was intense but prepared them for the Area Tournament and the South Central Regional Tournament in Troy, the coach said.

This year’s Lady Panthers were the 2016 Area Champions defeating Hueytown in two very intense Area Tournament games.

During their Regional appearance, the ladies defeated Stanhope Elmore and lost a close battle with Brookwood. Then they had to play Hueytown for the fifth time this season, and lost to the Golden Gophers to end the season in Troy.

The ladies with the top batting averages this season were Alexis Eisenberg (Sr.) and Dalton Merrill (Jr.) followed closely by young freshman standout, Yoly Paredes.

The pitching was shared by Senior Alexis Eisenberg and Freshman Cadence Crocker.

Former Panther greats retake the gridiron A day following his keynote address for the Children’s Hospital fundraiser, Clemson Head Football Coach and former PHS and Alabama football star Dabo Swinney took a step out onto the all-too-familiar Bobby Hayes football field at PHS. Not to just coach, not to just visit, but to actually play in the first annual PHS Alumni Football Game.

Players’ graduation dates from PHS ranged from as recent as 2015 to as early as 1981. Due to the amount of older players participating, in the weeks leading up to the game, City Council President Rick Hayes jokingly pleaded for doctors to come to the game in case something were to go wrong.

The game pitted the green panthers against they grey panthers. On the green side, Dabo (a 1988 graduate) once again took on the mantle of coach as well as a player, and his teammates included quarterback Rick Hayes as well as Rick’s brother and son Robert (a 2014 graduate).

Former PHS Head Football Coach and Pelham Board of Education President Rick Rhoades served as coach for the

gray team, with former University of Alabama football star Tyler Watts as their quarterback.

Another former UA football star, Antonio London, who actually played with Dabo at the University, came to watch his son play and catch up with Dabo.

While his father, former Pelham Mayor Bobby Hayes, did not join the other Hayes men participating in the game, he threw the game-starting coin toss and stood on the sidelines with the players and coaches, passing out bubble gum as per his own long standing tradition.

“I am so thrilled to see some of these kids,” Mayor Hayes said.

“I’m glad to be back here; it’s good to see a lot of these old faces,” Dabo said before the game. “I’m just looking Tyler Watts (below), Dabo Swinney (right) forward to having some and Coach Rick Rhoades (bottom right) fun in my old stomping were among the notables to take part in grounds. “It is a blast to be out here with a lot of friends,” Rick said. “So many of these guys, we go way back, and it is a lot of fun to be here. I am scared to death for how many injuries we are going to have, but I’m looking forward to it. It’s been a long time coming, and it’s just great to see everybody out here together.”

Any residents interested in qualifying to run for office may do so July 5 through July 19, 2016 through the city clerk’s office at Pelham City Hall. May 25, 2016 (90 days before Election Day) was the last day a candidate could become a resident of the city.

Family Connection honors Pelham students with Characters in Action Awards On the morning of May18, four Pelham City Schools students were recognized at the Character in Action Awards Ceremony at the Family Connection building in Alabaster. Judge Jim Kramer and District Attorney Jill Lee gave the students their awards and thanked the students’ parents for instilling good values in their children.

Pelham High School sophomore Grace Nolan, Riverchase Middle School eighth-grader Dominic Fanella, Valley Intermediate fifth-grader Katlyn Hollingsworth and Valley Elementary second-grader Lucas Kalba embody what it means to have good character in Pelham in 2016.

The teachers who nominated the students had to give examples of the student’s character.

Grace’s teachers described her as a respectful person, two-sport athlete, member of the national honor society and volunteer with

the Special Olympics. “Grace’s self-discipline is the strongest that I have witnessed in my 23-year career in education,” her teacher wrote. “Grace shows unbelievable maturity and fairness in her interactions with others. Grace has overcome adversity in the past year, all while maintaining a positive attitude. She stands out in my mind as an excellent example of perseverance.”

Dominic is known for running track and running for president of SGA for his ninth grade class. He is currently the president of the Junior National Honor Society.

“Dominic represents our school system as a model citizen,” his teachers wrote. “As a student, his work always reflects an emphasis on citizenship and all that goes with it. He doesn’t leave anyone out or behind; he will work diligently with his peers to make sure that they understand the concepts required.”

Katlyn practices random acts of kindness at school, volunteers to help clean in the lunchroom, tries to be helpful, takes pride in her classroom and “willingly does her part to make good things happen,” according to her teachers.

“Katlyn shows a maturity beyond her years by being respectful to everyone she meets and treating everyone in a kind manner,” one teacher wrote. “Katlyn is an amazing student. She is always smiling and in a good mood.

Katlyn is absolutely the friendliest child I’ve taught in 15 years as an educator.”

Lucas is polite and respectful even when frustrated. He attends the evening runs and encourages others to participate as well; he thinks

of others and strives to make a positive impact on students and teachers.

“Lucas has a kind and caring heart. He looks out for his peers and is a great friend to all who know him,” his teacher wrote.

“Lucas can often be heard saying ‘Let them go first’ or ‘They can have the first turn.’ This is not typical second grade behavior, but it is typical Lucas behavior.”

Danielle Sanders

Parents: Loretha and Andre Sanders

“Being selected representative of my senior class in the homecoming court was a momentous occasion for me.

Also attending Girl’s State in 2015 and winning the Selma Essay/Video contest were big moments. My biggest influence has been my parents. I hope to someday be half the woman my mother is and marry a man who’s half the man my father is.

My favorite class was Spanish 2 my sophomore year when Helena and Pelham were still one school and Mrs Hicks and Prof Adams were here. My favorite teacher is Mrs Nolen, the true definition of mentor, educator and Mother Bird for me. I plan to attend Jacksonville St in the fall and major in nursing. I plan a career as a pediatric nurse so I can be the reason a child smiles, to care for them and influence them in a positive way. My biggest regret was that my grandparents weren’t alive to see me graduate.My advice to young students is to take advantage of every opportunity to volunteer and participate in every activity/club possible. Also, create personal relationships with your teachers and make new friends. I know that in the next 20 years, God will continue to bless me and hopefully I’ll have my own family and a career that allows me to bless and impact others.”

Hasaan Hawthorne

“My most momentous occasion was winning my state title in wrestling. My dad has been the biggest influence in my life. My favorite class is Government and Economics with Mrs Cullom and Mr Goodin. My favorite teacher is Ms Powers.

I will be attending North Idaho University in the fall and will major in communications. One day, I envision myself being a broadcaster on ESPN. If I could change anything about high school, I’d hope that it would be longer.

My advice to freshmen would be to keep your grades up, find your real friends and have fun.

In 20 years, I hope to be working and have a family.”

Ryan Tomlinson

“My most memorable moment at PHS was the senior luncheon. I made so many memories that day.

My mother has been the biggest influence on my life.

Since my dad passed away, my mom has worked hard to make sure that us children never felt cheated.

She has taught me that everything in life happens for a reason, and that you have to make the most out of every situation.

My favorite class is AP US History. Even though it was the most challenging class I’ve taken, I learned so much about US history. There are so many great teachers at PHS, but Coach T holds a special place in my heart. She always pushes me to do better and accomplish more than I ever thought I could. She is also great at making history interesting and relatable. If you heard ‘Mama Jean’s’ name come up, you knew you were in for a good story!

I will attend the University of Alabama and major in biomedical science. I would like to be a cardiovascular or trauma surgeon one day. If I could change anything about high school, it would be to lengthen the senior year! It was the best year of my high school experience and I wish I could start it all over! My advice to freshmen is ‘take it all in!’ PHS students are blessed to have such amazing opportunities, and they need to take advantage of them. People at PHS are more accepting than you might think, so don’t be afraid to try new things! In the words of H. Jackson Brown Jr, ‘Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity.’

In 20 years, I see myself practicing medicine at a hospital near the beach. I hope to have a beautiful family by then, and be happy in everything I do.”

“My favorite memory of PHS was performing at Write Night with my band, playing a few songs for my classmates to rock out to. My brother Moises is my biggest inspiration. He has always pushed me to do more and be the best I can be. My favorite class is English and favorite teacher is Mr Dye. He encourages students to read more and go outside. I’ll be attending Jeff State for a year and then transfer to Jacksonville St where I’ll major in marketing. I see myself being an advertising manager, creating ads or ad campaigns for various businesses. A regret is not being involved in theater at PHS. I’d advise freshmen to do their best in every class and try new things. The more involved you are, the more fun high school will be.

In 20 years, I see myself in a successful career living in Florida with my family.

Morgan Willingham

“My big moment at PHS would have to be playing the role of Hattie in our competition show of Laundry and Bourbon for theater. Our show placed 3rd at State and I received Best Supporting Actress in studio theater. My mom has been the biggest influence on my life teaching me that doing the right thing is always better than doing the popular thing, and teaching me that I can do anything if I push myself enough. Her humbleness and kind heart impact me everyday. She is a great role model. My favorite class is AP Literature, and my favorite teacher is Mrs Harrison. She makes all students feel valued in the classroom, and I am always happy to see her smile. I will be attending Mississippi St in the fall majoring in Veterinary Science while minoring in Spanish. Someday, I’d like to work with large and exotic animals possibly in a zoo setting or abroad in their natural habitats. If I could change anything about high school, it would be to change people’s negative attitudes and perspectives about Pelham. I’ve always valued my school and the people in it, and I wish others would, too. My advice to freshmen is to keep their focus and never take a memory for granted.

Any chance you have to go to a football game, a school play or Write Night, TAKE IT! The time will fly by. In 20 years, I see myself in a successful career that can accommodate my desire to travel abroad and learn about other countries.”

Jacqueline Diego

“The split between Helena and Pelham was a huge moment for our senior class. I lost many close friends, but a smaller class has definitely brought us all together.

I owe all of my accomplishments to my parents. They are the reason behind all the hard work and dedication I have wholeheartedly put forth these last four years.

Mrs Copes and Mrs Burnett will always have a special place in my heart. Mrs Copes showed me the difference a kind word and a smile can have on a person, and in Mrs Burnett’s AP Literature class, I learned how to dig deeper and to always be passionate about the things you love.

I plan to attend Jeff State next fall for nursing. As a nurse, I hope to be able to help those in need and make an impact on many lives.

My advice to freshmen is to not take your education for granted. All the possible resources needed to succeed will be provided for you, but it will be up to you to make the best out of them.

In 20 years, I see myself working as a trauma nurse at UAB Hospital.”

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CITIZENS OF PELHAM

I have worked with many of you to enhance the quality of life in Pelham over the last ten years. I have outlined some of the priorities we may want to consider for future growth. In 2012, the council was divided and the city asked for a new council to work together. The results achieved are from a collaborative effort. The results included but are not limited to: Increasing cash reserves while lowering debt, creating family fun events, expanding the senior center, revising city employee pay plan, initiating start of a green-way trails , supporting new and renovated schools, continuing plans for a new library, and proposing a recreational center be added to park footprint. We have provided state of the art equipment and ensured access to training for Police and Firemen.

Pelham is fortunate to have low crime rates and excellent fire ratings. As the son of a nurse and police officer; I’m always excited to support our first responders. When the time calls, Pelham will be ready! We are all proud of these efforts. If I’m re-elected, I will continue what we started and focus on schools, communication, fiscal accountability, marketing, and community.

I’M PROPOSING THE FOLLOWING >> 1. SCHOOLS: I will continue to make sure our kids have the tools to succeed in a global market by working with all stakeholders: administrators, teachers, support personnel, school board and parents. 2. COMMUNICATION: Communicating with our residents is important to me. We need to enhance our efforts in the following channels: newsletters, town hall meetings, social media, website, and apps. You asked for more communication and I will see to it. 3. FISCAL ACCOUNTABILITY: Maintaining our AAA bond rating is a priority. I will help create a responsible and balanced budget. In April 2016, Independent auditors verified that Pelham is in excellent financial shape. 4. MARKETING: I believe we have to continue to reinvest in ourselves. With all the new things happening in Pelham, it’s the perfect time to continue to market Play & Stay in Pelham. The city’s partnership with Oak Mountain State Park has been growing over the last couple years. We need to work with them to bring more events to the park. In addition, the commercial development authority will play a key role in taking our economic development growth to the next level. 5. COMMUNITY: I will work hard to continue to support events like Taste of Pelham and the Pelham Palooza that bring our community together. I will continue to work with our local civic, patriotic, faith-based and non-profit groups in our city as they also add to the quality of life. “Dedicated to Community and Committed to Service”

Children’s Miracle Network a rousing success thanks to Miss Alabama, Hayley Barber and Clemson Coach Dabo Swinney Pelham is a truly great city, lucky to have the support of not only its generous and community-minded public servants, politicians and residents, but also those former hometown kids who have grown up and moved away.

Case in point—former PHS and University of Alabama football player and current Head Coach of the Clemson Tigers Dabo Swinney came back to serve as the keynote speaker for a charity luncheon held on May 16.

“I’m here to serve this community, to give back to this wonderful town I am from, and make a difference for people I may never meet,” Dabo said. “And hopefully create some hope—when you have hope in the future, you have power in the present.”

Hayley Barber, Miss Alabama 2016, put together the luncheon, which was held at the Pelham Civic Complex to benefit Children’s Hospital of Alabama with a fundraising goal of $30,000.

Hayley was happy to announce $32,478 of the goal was raised through table sales and auction items at the luncheon that day.

The luncheon kicked off with introductions by other standout

Pelham residents. “We wanted to thank you for taking the time to support this fantastic event, Dabo,” said City Council President Rick Hayes, who is one of Dabo’s oldest and best friends.

“We appreciate you being that good ol’ boy from Alabama.”

“Dabo has elevated the program at Clemson,” said Tyler Watts, another former PHS and UA football star. This sentiment was echoed by several others at the event. He described Dabo as genuine and said he respects how the coach has always treated his players well. However, more than his giving spirit pushed Dabo to speak at this event—he has a strong connection to the cause— Children’s Hospital.

Dabo’s mother, Carol McIntosh, spent most of the first ten years of her life in Children’s Hospital. According to Dabo, she spent time in an iron lung and had her spine replaced with a cadaver’s spine, among several other health procedures she had as a child. He insisted she would not be alive now without their care. At one time, it was said Carol would never have children, and yet Dabo is one of her grow-

ing family of three sons and seven grandsons.

“Children’s Hospital and the people there are amazing,” Dabo said. “I am a poster child for Children’s, for myself and for my mother indirectly.” That’s right: Dabo himself spent a week healing in Children’s Hospital after getting a bacterial infection while swimming when he was just ten-

years-old. “I am proud to support a cause like theirs.”

Pelham Adult Summer Reading Program is Underway!!!

Pelham Public Library invites everyone 18 and older to participate in the 10th annual Adult Summer Reading Program starting June 1st and running through July 31st. When an adult checks out three or more books or audio books at one time per visit (included are adult fiction, nonfiction books, magazines and books on CD; excluded are juvenile and young adult material, games, music, or movies.) an

entry form may be entered in the drawing. There is no limit to the number of entries one may enter.

Exciting prizes will be awarded to the lucky winners in early August.

Exercise Your Mind!

Thanks to an LSTA grant awarded to The Pelham Public Library, a special contest is being offered promoting the items received through the grant from the Alabama Public Library Service. Pelham Library patrons checking out a health related item will receive a special gift and the opportu nity to enter a drawing for one of two Fitbit Flex watches.

Free Computer Classes In an effort to assist those that cannot take advantage of the weekday classes at the library, Pelham Public Library offers night and weekend computer classes. Classes are free and will remain small to ensure that students receive the most from their participation. Patrons are encouraged to register soon. Those interested may register in person or over the phone at 620-6418.

One on One Device Assistance Pelham Public Library now offers individual technology instruction. A patron will be able to pair up with an instructor for one hour of assistance. Patrons can request assistance with tablets, iPads and E-readers. The instructors will help in the setup and usage of any of the library’s downloadable media. Classes are available Thursdays. Pelham High School Summer Baseball Camp 2016 The Pelham High School baseball team and coaches have been hosting a Kids Summer Baseball Camp for 15 years. The camp is open to children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The goal of this baseball camp is to teach the athletes about all aspects of the game— pitching, catching, running, sliding, and of course the rules of baseball.

However, the main take-away of this camp is for the athletes to learn to have fun while playing, no matter the score or outcome.

The four days of this camp consisted of drills, training, games, and a slip n’ slide for the kids (and coaches) to enjoy. Pelham High School’s baseball coach and director of the camp, Sean Anderson, said, “We really appreciate the parents taking the time to bring their kids to our camp and entrust us with them for a few hours a day. Hopefully we will see these kids as they get older and become Pelham Panthers.”

This summer, we recognize Vietnam Veteran Ron Koonce Thank you for your Service!

Ron Koonce, a Pelham resident and Vietnam veteran, served our country for a total of eight years. He was active for six months and served seven and

a half years in the reserves. Koonce was a member of the 292nd US Military Band; however, he was a soldier first and a musician later. He went through basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia and then went on to play in the band at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

The Military band led the parade at graduation ceremonies and they attended a number of events throughout their service.

After Koonce completed college and received his Medical

Tech certification, he transferred to the medical unit for the United States Army. Koonce felt that he was providing a greater service to the country and to other soldiers by working in the medical unit. His experiences there were vastly different than his experiences in the military band. For example, Koonce reminisced on the sound of the Huey Helicopter—he referred to the sound as the “icon of war” and as something that still gives him chills to this day. Koonce said, “The Vietnam war was unique. There were updates every day. We found out it was over when Nixon announced we were pulling out…Washington wouldn’t let them fight.” Koonce lost a dear friend in battle, Dennis Blackman, who was a helicopter pilot.

He reported that he became more patriotic after the war, even though it was not a good time to be in the military. He is proud of the work he did for this country for the eight years he served, and he has continued to show his love and devotion to the nation and our veterans by being an active member of the American Legion (Matthew Blount Post 555 in Pelham). The American Legion’s mission is to help veterans who have served and for those soldiers still serving. The American Legion is also committed to mentoring youth, spreading patriotism and honor for the United States and promoting a strong national security.

As we work on the Trails/Greenway Initiative, we are evaluating opportunities for multiple detention ponds/lakes that could reduce the severity of the Bishop Creek flooding while also providing some additional scenic places for our residents to gather and enjoy beautiful parts of our city. The city’s agreement with CSX for their new crossover rail line was executed June 23 and should include major improvements to Lee Street this fall including an important improvement to help with flooding in that area. When completed, this project should significantly reduce the number of trains that have to stop on crossings and block our roads.

All of this activity is helping to fuel the growth in new home permits (up ~49% this year) and economic development activity. Virtually all of our issues and opportunities are interrelated so we have to take a very integrated strategic approach as we try to resolve issues and maximize our opportunities. We also need to work together to complete

the changes that we still need to complete our transformation.

As we work on these opportunities, we are also working to increase the number of good jobs in Pelham.

Attracting additional employers that will offer many more of our residents an opportunity to work without having to leave Pelham is a part of every economic opportunity that the city and CDA consider because this is a quality of life issue as much as it is an economic issue.

The Summer Classics Headquarters relocation and Research Solutions expansion are great examples of how much businesses like this can mean to our city. These kinds of successes along with the City Center development and other projects that should be approved soon will help us complete the critical turnaround of our 31 corridor and the Health-

South rehabilitation hospital will be another big step for the County Road 52 area.

Considering all of these initiatives and opportunities, we are blessed that our city is so sound financially.

Pelham’s reserves have increased almost $11 million in the last 3.5 years (about a 40% increase), and we have been able to pay off roughly $10.5 million in non-school debt over the same period. This type of progress helped Pelham become one of only four cities in Alabama to earn a AAA bond rating. Our revenue has also grown significantly so far this year, but we still have to watch our funds carefully and make sure that we spend wisely for both our current needs and the future.

I want to recognize police officers Carl Perkinson and Brad Jordan, as well as Fire Captain Chris Carpenter, for their recent awards that brought positive attention to our city and the tradition of working to be a leader in public safety. Similarly, Hasaan Hawthorne and Mary Grace Strozier both represented our community ex-

tremely well as they finished off great careers at Pelham High School with state championships because of their unbelievable focus and dedication.

We are truly blessed to have so many students and other residents that we can be proud of.

Our community has many wonderful assets that often get overlooked because of our busy lives. We don’t get to take advantage of them as often as we should, but hopefully with all of the additional facilities being developed now, we will get together as a city much more often in the future. However, it takes great employees and citizens like the ones I mentioned above to have a great city just like the best schools are based on wonderful teachers, faculties and students. Facilities are very important and provide the foundation we need, but the people who work together selflessly are what truly make our city something special.

Students from VIS take charge for a time at Youth Government Day “I would like to say thank you to all the people who have made this happen for us.”

VIS Councilwoman Grace Ann Wages At the 32nd annual Pelham Youth Government Day, Valley Intermediate 5th graders took over our local government for a fun day Mayor Gary Waters calls “a great break from the norm.”

As they do every year, members of the 5th grade class ran for various government and personnel positions held in the city. Their fellow classmates voted in the student governing body, and then everyone was able to enjoy this day of learning. While most students travel between departments and learn how the city is run, the student elected officials shadow their adult counterparts. The city council members and mayor even come up with an agenda of their own issues to present at an actual council meeting.

Corey Perkins was the mayor, Emma Stoddard was the city council president, and the other council members were Jordan Caskey, Grace Ann Wages, Lily Kies and Trent McMinn. Ryan Maxwell was the police chief, Cohen Lee was the fire chief and Christy Le was the fire marshal. The court clerk was Casey Martin, the city clerk was Josie Allen, the library director was Aniyah McDaniel and the parks and recreation director was Laci Gogan. School superintendent was Mikey Ramos, and the school

board president was Diana Godwin were some of the student officials.

The student-driven ordinances presented at council were: Increase Pelham’s recycling efforts; increase the number of bike lanes, trails and sidewalks in existing neighborhoods in Pelham, and require them to be included in future neighborhoods; ban smoking in all public buildings and outdoor areas; and request that various clubs at VIS coordinate projects with the city.

After presenting these to the gathered parents at the council meeting, the students had the chance to talk about their experiences.

“I would like to say thank you to all the people who have made this happen for us,” said Councilwoman Grace Ann. “It’s been an excellent experience, and I am thankful to all the people that have helped us learn about our local government.”

“I have learned today as mayor, following Mayor Waters, that he plays an important part in our city of Pelham, Alabama,” Mayor Corey said. “I just wanted to thank him for being my guide.”

“I want to thank the city of Pelham for hosting the fifth grade Youth Government Day field trip,” said Josie Allen, student City Clerk.

“We got to learn about our city’s government and how it works.”

Pelham City Schools Registration and Important Dates for the 2016-2017 School Year Student Registration Pelham City Schools is changing to online registration for the 20162017 school year. Parents/guardians of returning students should have received an email from InfoSnap that includes a link to a Snapcode.

The Snapcode is a personalized link to create an online account that is pre-populated with your student's information. Use the link to activate your account, review all of the information, make any updates, and upload two proofs of residency dated for June or July. The deadline to complete the account activation process, review the student information, and upload your two proofs of residency documents is Friday, July 8, 2016.

New Student Registration All new students must make an appointment with the registrar at the school where they are enrolling. Once the appointment takes place and new student paperwork is submitted, you will be directed to create an online account.
