C Trav - Well that time of the 1/4 year again when Kurt and I have

to write something that’s on our mind, so here it is. I’m not sure where people took a wrong turn and stopped teaching and started telling. Someone spotted not wearing a helmet and there’s no more advice just abuse. I can’t help but think of Government anti-smoking campaigns: You smoke and you will die 100% of the time (the real figure is somewhere around 1 in 12). For some reason we’ve adopted this tactic to encourage people? If you don’t want to skate with someone that doesn’t have a helmet on then fine, TEACH them the risk then leave it! Don’t destroy our freedom of choice.

Kurt - Well our little baby turned 1 year old this month, and she’s already turning into such a great achiever. A few weeks back Luke Sorensen our main man Music Photographer / Writer, asked me to attend a Gala Ball awards night for a photo we published in issue 02 that he had entered in the MACCAS for “Best Lifestyle & Feature Photography” and we took it out! Such a classic moment, I found myself rubbing shoulders and mingling with some larger scale media corporate’s. I thought to myself hang on I am just a skateboarder doing what I love, and if this is just the start of things lets get fucken busy! Thank you skateboarding you have and always given me so much. K

FREERIDE Wheel Test

00:31hrs August 12th 1984, Ashmore, QLD, Australia A deafening boom rocks the valley due west of Surfers Paradise on QLD’s Gold Coast. A Lycra testing facility bursts into a conflagration of blue-green flames and sizzling fireworks, dripping a molten hot version of the new “Sunburst” range of Lycra all over the shocked neighbourhood. Anarchy ensues. Emergency services arrive and onlookers gasp in a chorus of astonishment as stunned fire crews make way for a single, ominous figure emerging from the flames. He is covered head to toe in molten orange Lycra, clenched fists facing downward he is the perfect picture of raging fury. Firefighters douse him with water and the Lycra sets in place covering his seething, figure in permanent, body tight, citrus flavoured Spandex! The seemingly indestructible stranger proceeds to take a 44’’ bar chainsaw from the rescue pocket of the nearest fire truck and destroy every moving craft he sees. Bikes and scooters are laid to waste in his wake as he shakes his head and raises clenched fists in disdain at the lack of quality in this feeble planet’s pathetic skate gear! His anger rises at every test as plywood and steel ball bearings are flung from the chainsaw until one chilled out individual by the name of ‘Beans’ rolled along during his midnight roll and offered the dude a piece of his deliciously dripping navel orange. “Gits angry, don’t ya fella?” says Beans. The Fanta-flavoured offender calms instantly and demands another quadrant of succulent bliss and to this day, is loyal to Beans and his rad journey of putting skate gear to the test, reporting their findings in the Heelside Chronicles and enjoying nature’s vitamin C enriched goodness. In this test, we put The Gits to work, doing what he does best - shredding the crap out of gear and complaining about it. We presented him with 9 sets of the best freeride wheels on the market, filled a satchel with organic oranges from the Heelside orchard and told him if he wanted even the tiniest slither of that goodness, then he’d have to not only shred thane ALL DAY LONG but also fill out the data sheets himself. Naturally he cracked it because he’s such an angry turd but we explained that we needed a completely unbiased opinion and someone/something with enough stamina to pull it off... So he punched Kurt in the mouth, threw the bag of wheels over his shoulder and grunted something to the effect of, KHRR! KHRR! KR! KHRR!! He then proceeded to absolutely annihilate urethane all freaking day. The results of his tireless efforts are outlaid in the following tables;

DRSPICE Dear A. Littlepeed, Stay focussed! One day you’ll be an ICON within the boy’s toilets. You may, or may not make it through school...You may, or may not make it through Uni... one day though, you’ll achieve the ability to pee HIGH above the trough and BEYOND!! I didn’t achieve my high status until I was in my late thirties. Keep trying, practice heaps at home! Keep it up (excuse the pun) and you’ll get your hands on that Trough-phy (sorry about that pun too!) Regards, Dr. Spice Dear Dr Spice, I slept in this morning and missed the chance for a shower before working at my local skate shop. It’s now 3pm and I went for a wee skate to the sushi joint at lunch and I’ve now noticed a bit of aromatic pungency rising from my crotch. I was worried this might affect my ability to offer sound advice and high quality service to my fellow skater so I’ve applied a small amount of liniment to the offending area and am now experiencing some mild discomfort of the cold minty nature. I was wondering, doctor, if this could affect my fertility or erectile function? Sincerely, V. Chillscrote Dear Mr. Chillscrote, The solution for ailments of this variety is simple, but refreshingly effective. What you will need is approximately two large handfuls of fine sawdust, preferably from a belt sander or something of the like, a bottle of Skanunu bearing lube and an ambi pur automatic air freshener - the type that sends out little puffs of deodoriser every now and then? Right, now close the shop up for two secs and duck out the back. Don’t forget to flip the “Back in 5 minutes” sign. Now drop your dacks, just down to your ankles is fine, and apply the sawdust to the affected area ensuring good equal coverage and a light rub. This will absorb the excess liniment. Now take the air freshener, tip out the deodorant, replace it with Skanunu, and place the unit in the crotch part of the underpants in question. Set the dial to “Max”, pull up your pants, give yourself a little adjust and go reopen the shop. I assure you, you will be pleasantly surprised. I can only hope this finds you in time. Regards, Dr Spice Dear Dr Spice I’m not sure but I think my missus is cheating on me! Whenever I come home there is always a “tradesman” just leaving my house. When I come home from the pub at night there’s another “tradesman” just leaving the house. I’ve noticed this mainly occurs when every time I leave the house she puts a box of laundry powder on display in the front window? Yours sincerely, I.M. Confused Dear I.M. Confused What brand of laundry powder do you use? If it is the brand “Omo” then that is a tell tale sign. “Omo” stands for “Old man’s out!” Change your brand of laundry powder immediately and take up some DIY around the house. You can rest assured, no matter what, your plumbing at home has had a good servicing. Regards, Dr Spice

Dear DR. Spice, I find myself in quite a dilemma within the boy’s toilets. When me and the boys take a pee at the urinal troughs the anxiety begins... As my mates have a competition of who can pee the highest above the urinal trough line, I unfortunately, have made a poor effort every time! I am now seriously concerned for my reputation and urinal abilities. A. Littlepeed

Lately there has been a huge step up in the quality and quantity of what we call ‘Action Sports Cameras’ on the available market, produced for you adrenaline junkies to stick on your melon and capture the action to share with your mates (and boast about) or edit into sick little flicks to put on Youtube. One particular camera that has been proven to be top of the line and is also a household name with extreme sports is the GoPro, but there’s a new kid on the block that’s offering a little bit more than the GoPro, and that’s the GoBandit. What the GoBandit offers that the GoPro does not, is its GPS feature. It will capture your max / average speed, distance travelled and altitude all in real time. This is really handy for all those downhill skateboarders who wanted to know exactly how fast they are going on their local run, but also want to capture footage at the same time. The best bit about the camera is that it comes with a program that blends the footage you have captured along side the GPS data recorded and gives you an option to paste the live-time speed/altitude/distance onto your video in numerous skins for you to post up on the webs to prove to your mates just how fast you went on your last downhill run. Also when you post it onto the GoBandit website you have the option to place a GPS marker on a map to show your route/track which runs alongside your clip. Although this camera is an epic tool for proving how cool you are, shoots in high quality 720p, has a rotatable lens to get the right angle, has a shock-proof case and easy user-friendly interface to get it working; the mounting options for downhill skateboarding are not fantastic compared to what is already on the market. You need a much wider and flatter surface to attach the sticky mounts to, which kind of limit your options to where you can mount the camera. Also given the fact that it IS shock proof, it will not take the vibrations when mounting directly onto your skateboard, so that limits you to mounting on the helmet only (unless you want to carry it). You will also need to wait 2-5 minutes for the GPS to locate your position before recording your run. If you are looking for a high quality camera to get amazing looking shots, edit fantastic looking videos and are serious about producing the best looking videos, there are better options out there. However if your interested in just recording you runs and getting live-time feedback for your speed and distance and want to show it off with a pretty cool looking skin, go for the GoBandit.

1 : DISSECTION - The Somberlain Possibly one of the greatest metal albums ever produced. Fronted by Jon Nodtveidt, The Somberlain delivers incredible riffs flowing from one to the next, song after song, with impeccable timing and the odd acoustic interlude scattered throughout. All 3 of their albums kick arse, check em all. We lost one of the greatest ever song writers in the world of metal when Jon took his own life, RIP.

6 : BEHEMOTH - Zos Kia Cultus Even though ‘Thelema 6’ was where Behemoth truly found their style, ‘Zos kia’ was where they truly found their feet and every album they’ve done since is just an improvement on this one. I believe without doubt BEHEMOTH ARE the most professional band on the planet bar none! So heavy, so brutal , so much talent! If you’re a drummer you could possibly make a mess in your pants when you check what inferno does to the skins. Get this album or any after Thelema 6, or miss out on some of the best DM getting round today!

2 : MORBID ANGEL - Altars of Madness One of the pioneers of DM, Morbid Angel are gods! When this album was released the world was shown how metal is meant to be played. Insane riffing, amazing time changes and truly insane musicianship. Professionalism plus! These guys brought a whole new level and standard to the scene that set a benchmark that has only ever been reached by a handful of other bands. And guitar solos to die for aaarrrrggghhh!!!

7 : NECROPHOBIC - The Nocturnal Silence In my opinion ‘The nocturnal...’ is a must have for any metal fan. Very cool riffs, great catchy song writing, awesome lyrics (if you like your evil stuff hehe) and great vocals. This is a rare and very sought after album which has recently been given a well deserved repressing, so if you can find it, snap it up!

3 : IMMOLATION - Dawn of Possession So much rhythm yet just so brutal! ‘Dawn...’ Is DM gold, a masterpiece! When I came across this band, I just had to run out and tell everyone! Heavy, brutal, awesome songwriting with a profound understanding of time changes. Deadly vocals, great lyrics and a heavy arse guitar sound. One of the bands that reach that professional benchmark I speak of. Every song’s a winner and everything they do is pure perfection! 4 : SINISTER - Cross The Styx Sit down and listen to some of the best death metal riffs ever! From start to fin ‘cross the styx’ delivers! As a guitar player and songwriter, I find pure joy in listening to the riffs found here. The layers and timing are amazing, check out the title track, ‘doomed’ or ‘corridors to the abyss’ to give you an idea. Throw in some good heavy vocals and awesome drumming, I believe a must for any DM collection. 5 : SUFFOCATION - Effigy of the Forgotten Well if you need a true lesson in ‘brutal’ go for Suffocation. ‘Effigy...’ paved the way for the 2nd wave of DM and brought new meaning to the word brutality. Crunching, punching heavy sound with riffs and solos to tear your face off! Heavy duty vocals, drums and bass to bring down the walls. If you think you’re a DM fan, then this better be in your collection!

8 : DEICIDE - Deicide Another great album for worshippers of the dark prince! Super catchy songs with super evil lyrics. The musicianship won’t blow you away but the evilness will. If you don’t get your head banging to this one then go back to ‘kylie’ cos you ain’t metal! With classic favourites like ‘sacrificial suicide’ or ‘dead by dawn’ you are sure to get the neighbours rockin’ with this one! 9 : GORGUTS - Considered Dead This band had a lot to live up to after the hype their demo caused in the tape trading world (olden day stuff kiddies) and when it was released, it delivered! Opening with some beautiful acoustics then launching into some heavy technical riffing which was quite brutal for its time, and fronted by a unique and guttural vocal style. An awesome album which is still so good even at today’ s standard. 10: SENTENCED - North From Here People may debate this entry but I have included it for those musicians out there. The Finnish definitely have their own style but this band went from traditional DM to ever evolving into something I’m not into. But this, their second album brought a big change for them and displayed incredible techniques of musicianship. Ripping technical riffs flowing throughout smooth melodies. If you play or write songs, give this one a go and give it time to grow on you if the first listen doesn’t grab you right away.
