heartofgold.com.au For our 2018 festival artwork, Heart of Gold continues our collaboration with Melbourne-based textile designer and illustrator Edith Rewa. This year’s artwork features a magnificent green island fig bonsai, flanked by our signature wattle and a Gympie viewing stone. The symbol of a bonsai reflects the craftsmanship, skill and aesthetic impact of our short filmmakers. Whilst their works of art may be small, they are crafted carefully with as much love and care as may go into a feature film. At Heart of Gold, we celebrate our short filmmakers and are proud to present their work to our audience of film lovers. Heart of Gold Program 2018 | 2

INTRODUCTIONS WELCOME from the MAYOR OF GYMPIE

WELCOME from the ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

For over a decade the Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival has circulated the cultural life blood of our region. It is my pleasure to welcome you all to this year’s festival which is set to be the best one yet.

For our 11th festival, we have assembled a line-up of some 120 short films and two very special feature films. After an incredible milestone 10th festival in 2017, we return with a carefully curated selection of films that celebrate the human spirit, films that surprise and delight, that provoke us to think deeply, films that take us on journeys to parts of the world we may never visit and, above all, films that move us.

While Gympie Regional Council have supported this program from its inception, it is only made possible through the dedication and hard work of the committee, volunteers, sponsors, the community and you, the audience. For months in advance groups of local community members sift through hundreds of films each year to select a program of exceptional quality that tugs the heart strings. The Heart of Gold showcases some of the best short films from around the world and is just one of many cultural events running throughout October, with the Rush Festival following later in October. To the many filmmakers who attend Heart of Gold in person, I hope you return again with film crews and stories to tell. Enjoy the line up of films, talks and workshops on offer and if you get the opportunity get out and explore our region and see why it is the number one choice to live, work and play.

MAYOR MICK CURRAN BM GYMPIE REGIONAL COUNCIL

It is my great honour to consider hundreds of films each year, in collaboration with our valued screener groups from all across the Gympie region. This is a community full of short film connoisseurs who are passionate about the art form. The energy and warmth of Heart of Gold is directly connected to our wonderful volunteers you will feel it as soon as you walk in the doors of the Civic Centre! Welcome to the filmmakers who join us this year, and to our audience - new and old - who gather together to watch these brilliant films! We hope you enjoy the many wonders of our 2018 program. See you at the festival!

FOcus on: EDITING How does a film editor make decisions about where and when to cut in order to make a film 'feel right'? Generally speaking, the answer is, 'it's intuitive', which is accurate but leaves one wanting to know more. Filmmaker and academic Dr. Karen Pearlman breaks down the definition of intuition to find that, even if rhythmic thinking is intuitive thinking, there’s more to it than that feeling of knowing. This workshop with Dr. Karen Pearlman delves deep into the craft of editing - developing your ideas about cutting movement of images, emotions and events creatively and enhancing your own choices as an editor. Open to all ages and experience levels, from the home movie novice to the seasoned filmmaker, this workshop is a fascinating and valuable insight into the craft of editing. Dr Karen Pearlman writes, directs and edits screen productions and she writes about screen culture and creative processes. Karen is a director of the multi-award winning Physical TV Company, through which she has developed, produced, directed or edited numerous highly acclaimed short films, online and mobile productions and the short feature Thursday's Fictions. Karen is also a lecturer in Screen Production at Macquarie University, and she held the post of Head of Screen Studies at AFTRS for 6 years. She is the author of Cutting Rhythms, Shaping the Film Edit (Focal Press). Karen’s short films AFTER THE FACTS and WOMAN WITH AN EDITING BENCH are both Official Selections in Heart of Gold 2018 and will screen as part of this session. SESSION SPONSOR

FRIDAY night feature: ISLAND OF THE HUNGRY GHOSTS Director Gabrielle Brady | 94min | Germany, Australia, UK

Christmas Island is home to one of the largest land migrations on earth— that of forty million crabs journeying from jungle to sea. But the jungle holds another secret: a high-security facility that indefinitely detains individuals seeking asylum. Winner of the Best Documentary Prize at Tribeca Film Festival, Australian director Gabrielle Brady has created a lyrical and immersive documentary that is at once riveting and dreamlike. Poh Lin is a trauma counsellor living on the remote Christmas Island with her young family. Poh Lin’s job is to work with people trying to seek asylum to Australia who have been detained in a high security detention facility, deep within the islands jungle. The island is one of the last discovered places on earth, with humans having migrated to its shores less than a century ago. The original inhabitants are the forty million land crabs. Pulled by the force of the full moon they begin their epic odyssey from the island’s jungle to its rugged coastline. As Poh Lin and her family explore the island’s powerful and threatening landscape, a disquieting sensation grows. Local islanders carry out their ‘hungry ghost’ rituals for the spirits of those who died on the island without a proper burial. They make offerings to appease the lost souls, who are said to be wandering the jungles at night without a home. “...a film that demonstrates extraordinary mastery of the full symphonic range of cinematic tools: cinematography, editing, score, sound design and, perhaps greatest of all, an exquisite use of metaphor...a film that moved us deeply [and] impressed us immensely” – Tribeca Jury Heart of Gold Program 2018 | 32
