INTRODUCTIONS FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
FROM THE MAYOR
EMILY AVILA
MICK CURRAN
It is my great honour to present the program of 10th Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival. Nestled within the golden hills of Gympie, housed in the grand auditorium of the Civic Centre, it is the loveliest film festival in Australia. Our 10th program is full of carefully-crafted short films from every corner of the world, specially selected for their emotional resonance and power. This year marks 150 years since gold was discovered here in Gympie, sparking a mad gold rush that would become the foundation of the city. Now in its 10th year, Heart of Gold inspires the same mad rush each year as audiences vie for a seat in the Civic Centre to enjoy Gympie’s newfound gold - our brilliant short films. We have a very special program this year - more films than ever before plus an Extras sidebar of masterclasses, workshops and Family Day. The beloved Prospectors Hall will also be transformed into a goldmine for our Opening Night gala - the biggest party in town and not to be missed! I am also thrilled to present the Queensland premiere of Ben Elton’s new feature film Three Summers with an all-star cast of Aussie screen legends plus our Solid Gold session of winners from across the years. This year we expand our Real Stories with Heart offering to two sessions and introduce a new award for Most Inspiring True Story as part of our $10,000 prize pool. This is a festival unlike any other and remains energetically supported by the generosity and passion of the film-loving community where it is held. It is a festival that values each and every film in the program with audiences who love a discussion over a coffee or a drink afterwards. For those who have never visited, this is the year to do it. I look forward to welcoming you to the 10th Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival! - Emily Avila

Welcome to the tenth Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival 2017. Gympie Regional Council has been a supporter since its inception and its longevity is testament to the part that the committee, volunteers, sponsors, the community and you, the audience, have all played in bringing to life another great Heart of Gold. I hope you enjoy the selection of Australian and International short films right here in Gympie. It’s set to be four great days of film fun and inspiration with some true cultural treasures to be unearthed and enjoyed. The Heart of Gold is just one of many arts and creative culture events that make up the Rush Festival, which is running over the month of October. The Rush Festival celebrates everything that’s great about the Gympie region and its people. Our community, culture and heritage will be in the spotlight with a broad calendar of events including not only this one but the Gold Rush Festival, Rush Art Competition and exhibition, Widgee Bush Balladeers, and various concerts. Enjoy the films you have chosen to watch, enjoy RUSH Festival, enjoy the beautiful assets of our region and may the Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival keep beating strongly for many more years to come.
- Mayor Mick Curran BM

PROSPECTORS HALL THE BEATING HEART OF THE HEART OF GOLD
In 1867, prospector James Nash struck gold in the Gympie region - leading to a wild gold rush that extended all along the Mary River and giving Gympie her heroic reputation as “the town that saved Queensland” and bringing much needed prosperity to the region. It’s 150 years since that first discovery and, in honour of our town’s heritage, we are turning Prospectors Hall into one big goldmine! Head down the tunnel to discover a cavernous goldmine filled with relics, machinery and glittering gold from Gympie’s heydey - brought to life by the talented team from Unqualified Design Studio and LCR Film Sound. Prospectors Hall will also be the heart of the festivals Extras program - the place to be for filmmaker Q&A’s on the Golden Lounge, grab a souvenir from our festival store, learn to make professional videos on your smartphone or tablet at the Folktales handheld devices workshop, let the kids run riot with the shake & stir theatre co. Drop-In Drama Workshops on Sunday and do not miss a very special screening of Daryl & Malcolm’s Nostalgic Nuggets - an exuberant and surreal exploration of Gympie’s history of gold, led by the larger-than-life local legend Dr Daryl Dodt himself! There’s also a Music Video Masterclass for budding filmmakers and musicians to learn all about the craft from award-winning Aussie director Nick Waterman. Check out the daily schedule on display in Prospectors Hall and be sure to follow us on Facebook for special announcements about the Extras program.
