INTERNATIONAL ARTS MAGAZINE D ISSUE NO.6

HEART

SKIN

from the EDITOR

Dear HEART readers, the theme we have chosen for our second issue of the year is SKIN and no doubts you are going to see something innovative and unique from our featured artists! This time we open the issue with an interview to a sardinian fashion-beauty photographer, who has been able to cross the “barriers of the beautiful mediterranean sea and gain success with a hair-style top brand. Our co-editor - photographer Dave Campbell is the absolute protagonist of the fashion and photography sections, with two stunning yet different editorials. Then we talk of architecture with a project in Barcelona where the function meets aesthetics in a surprising way! Hold your breath, we fly to Sydney in Australia to discover an innovative solution for revitalizing an ugly office building, heritage from the past, that suggests a possible new path for other similar cases. Before the latest news from the heART world, we still have the time to stop in London to admire the inspiring work of a young graphic design and illustration company. Enjoy! Davide De Visdomini (Editor in Chief)

I VA N C A P R A

8 D FEATURED ARTIST IVAN CAPRA, BORN 1969, IS A SARDINIAN FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER WHO HAS BEEN ABLE TO CROSS THE BARRIERS OF THE ISLAND TRAVELLING IN THE WORLD OF FASHION AND BEAUTY. WITH A FLAME FOR PHOTOGRAPHY SINCE HE WAS A KID, HE LIVES HIS LIFE AND HIS INTERESTS WITH SUCH INSTINCT AND ENTHUSIASM THAT, WHEN CHATTING WITH HIM, YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE WORLD THROUGH HIS OWN EYES, OR BETTER, THROUGH THE LENS OF HIS CANON. OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS, HIS IMAGES HAVE BECOME PROTAGONIST OF L´ORÉAL´S DEGRADÉ CONSEIL CENTERS CAMPAIGNS AND HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED IN PRESTIGIOUS MAGAZINES SUCH AS “ELLE”, “MARIE CLAIRE” AND “COSMOPOLITAN”. HEART: WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPHY FOR YOU? IVAN CAPRA: PHOTOGRAPHY IS THE WORLD OF EMOTIONS FROZEN IN A SINGLE SHOT. AN EXTRAORDINARY INSTRUMENT TO TELL WHAT EVEN WORDS CAN´T. H: YOUR FAVOURITE PHOTOGRAPHER?   IC: NO DOUBTS: RICHARD AVEDON. HE HAS BEEN AN EXTRAORDINARY AND FINE INTERPRETER OF BLACK AND WHITE FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY. ELEGANT. EXCITING. EVERY WORD IS SUPERFLUOUS. WATCHING HIS IMAGES LEAVES YOU WORDLESS. AMONGTHE ONES STILL LIVING, DAVID LACHAPELLE, A JUBILATION OF COLORS ALWAYS IN THE BALANCE BETWEEN THE REAL WORLD AND THE SURREAL ONE OF FAIRY TALES. FAIRY TALES FOR ADULTS. HIS BAROQUE IS A SKILLFULLY ORCHESTRATED ONE.    H: YOUR MYTH...   IC: MANY. ALL THOSE WHO, THROUGH THEIR ART, THEIR WORKS, HAVE GIVEN US NEW OPPORTUNITIES  FOR KNOWLEDGE AND HAVE GIVEN RISE TO FRESH THOUGHTS. H: YOUR MOTTO...   IC: NOT LONG TIME AGO I STILL HAD WRITTEN IT IN ENORMOUS LETTERS IN A WALL AT HOME: “TAKEN AS A WHOLE, THE WORLD IS A MONSTER

FEATURED ARTIST D 9 FULL OF PREJUDICES, BUNDLING OF PRECONCEPTIONS, CORRUPTED BY SO-CALLED VIRTUE, IT IS A PURITAN AND A FATUOUS. THE SECRET OF LIFE IS THE ART TO CHALLENGE HIM. CHALLENGING THE WORLD - THAT’S WHAT SHOULD BE OUR GOAL, INSTEAD OF LIVING FOR CONDESCENDS TO HIS CLAIMS, AS WE DO MOSTLY” OSCAR WILDE   H: LIFE...   IC: LIFE IS MADE OF A NEVER-ENDING SERIES OF IMAGES: TOO MANY OF US ARE ABLE TOO GET JUST A FEW. AND I´M NOT TALKING OF PHOTOGRAPHY HERE. H: WHEN CAN WE DEFINE AN “ARTISTIC IMAGE”, BEYOND THE OLD FASHIONED CONCEPT OF SEXY CHICKS THAT WE FIND IN SO MANY CALENDARS OUT THERE?   IC: WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE FRAMING THAT PHOTOGRAPH TO PROUDLY DISPLAY IT TO EVERYONE IN YOUR HOME´S LIVING ROOM. H: WHERE IS THE BORDER BETWEEN SENSUALITY AND PORNOGRAPHY?   IC: SENSUALITY SMELLS LIKE FRESH FLOWERS AND FINE WOOD. ART IS TRUE SENSUALITY. PORNOGRAPHY WITH ITS SCATOLOGICAL SCENTS IS VIOLENCE. COMMERCIALIZATION OF THE FLESH. MORTIFICATION OF EMOTIONS.

www.sardiniafashion.com

H: YOU ARE A FASHION AND A BEAUTY PHOTOGRAPHER. WHEN DID YOU CHOOSE THIS FIELD? IS THERE ANYONE WHO (DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY) HAS SUGGESTED YOU THIS PATH? IC: I FOLLOW MY INSTINCT, MY HEART. I DO EXACTLY WHAT I LIKE THE MOST. WHEN I STARTED TO DIRECT ATTENTION TO FASHION AND BEAUTY I DID EXACTLY THIS: I FOLLOW MY INSTINCT. FOLLOWING NO-ONE. H: EVERY PHOTOGRAPHER HAS HIS OWN STYLE, EASILY RECOGNISABLE AS IN EVERY ARTIST´S WORKS. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN YOUR SHOTS?   IC: EMOTIONS. H: LIGHTS AND SHADOWS. DIFFERENT KIND OF LOOKS AND CLOSE-UPS. BEAUTY PHOTOGRAPHY DOESN´T ADMIT

10 D FEATURED ARTIST ERRORS, UNLESS PAYING THE DUE OF A LONG POST-PRODUCTION WORK. GIVEN THAT A BEAUTIFUL MODEL HELPS IN REACHING THE FINAL RESULT, CAN YOU TELL US YOUR STRATEGIES FOR A “PERFECT” SHOT? IC: YOU CANNOT LEAVE ASIDE THE HUMAN SIDE. IN FRONT OF YOUR CAMERA THERE IS NOT AN OBJECT, YOU ARE NOT WORKING AT A STILL-LIFE WHERE EVERYTHING IS UNDER CONTROL. IN FRONT OF YOUR LENS THERE´S A HUMAN BEING AND YOU HAVE TO RELATE TO HER.YOU HAVE TO CREATE AN EMPATHY, THAT´S WHY BEFORE BEING A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO COME INTO CONTACT WITH PEOPLE. HUMAN RELATIONS. WHEN I CAN, I TRY TO MEET THE MODEL BEFOREHAND. SPEAKING WITH HER IS VITAL. THE BIGGER THE MUTUAL ESTEEM, THE HIGHER THE POSSIBILITY TO GO HOME WITH A NUMBER OF GOOD SHOTS. EVERYTHING ELSE IS TECHNIQUE, FROM THE CAMERA TO THE PC FOR THE POST-PRODUCTION. NUMBERS AND NUMBERS ONLY. THAT´S WHY, FOR ME, PHOTOGRAPHY IS HEART. FEELINGS.   H: DO YOU ALREADY HAVE IN YOUR BOOK AN IMAGE THAT DESCRIBES YOU?   IC: EVERY PHOTO PICTURES A MOMENT OF MY LIFE. AN INSTANT. HERE IT IS: EVERY PHOTO PICTURES EXACTLY THAT INSTANT. I´M CONSTANTLY EVOLVING, AS MY WAY OF INTERPRETING LIFE AND BEAUTY THROUGH IMAGES. H: WHICH ADVICES YOU GIVE BEFORE STARTING A PHOTO-SHOOT? IC: TO BE THEIRSELVES. THE MODEL HAS TO SHOW EMOTIONS, THROUGH HER LOOK, HER FACE, HER WAY OF POSING. AND THEN IT´S A CONTINUOUS DIALOGUE. I DON´T WANT TO HAVE A PUPPET IN FRONT OF ME, OF WHOM I PULL THE STRINGS. I CAN GIVE SMALL ADVICES, BUT NOT TWIST THE PERSONALITY AND THE WAY TO “ACT” OF THE GIRL IN FRONT OF MY LENS. H: CDC PHOTOS. IVAN STYLE OR L´ORÉAL STYLE? IC: NICE QUESTION. WORKING FOR SUCH AN IMPORTANT GROUP AS L´ORÉAL´S DEGRADÉ CONSEIL´S CENTERS MEANS NOT ONLY INCREASING THE VALUE OF A FIRST QUALITY-HAIRSTYLE PRODUCTS-BRAND (NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLD)

AS L´ORÉAL IS, BUT FIRST OF ALL IT MEANS HIGHLIGHTING THE FINE WORK OF HAIRSTYLE DESIGNERS. PROFESSIONALS THAT EVERY DAY IN THEIR SALOONS ENHANCE THE HEADS OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD. THAT´S WHY I ALWAYS TRY TO HAVE A SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CDC BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY, TAKING PART TO ALL KIND OF TECHNICAL MEETINGS. I WANT TO SMELL THE SCENT OF THE PRODUCTS, HOLD THE BOTTLES, WATCH THE MODEL´S MAKEOVER -BEFORE ENTERING THE POSING ROOM- UNDER THE BRUSHES AND THE ALUMINIUM FOILS. TRULY UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU WANT TO CONVEY TO THE BIG PUBLIC MEANS TELLING THE STORY HONESTLY, TRULY BELIEVING IN THE PRODUCT YOU´RE PICTURING. IN THE END, WHEN YOU SEE YOUR IMAGE INSIDE A MAGAZINE,YOU KNOW NOT ONLY TO HAVE CONVEYED YOUR STYLE, BUT ALSO TO HAVE GIVEN TRUE VALUE AND DIGNITY TO THE WORK OF MANY PROFESSIONALS. H: YOUR UNREALIZABLE DREAM? IC: TO TRANFORM THE WORLD IN A BIG FAIRY TALE. IN THE ISLAND THAT DOESN´T EXIST. NO HATE, NOR VIOLENCE, SOLDIERS, WEAPONS.. EXACTLY AS EDOARDO BENNATO USED TO SING.

CORPORATE BUILDING IN 22@. BARCELONA BY Fermín Vázquez b720 arquitectos A N OFFICE BUILDING ON A TRAPEZOIDAL SITE WHICH FORMS PART OF THE ACTIONS FOR SECTOR 22@ IN BARCELONA. THE 22@ PROJECT IS TRANSFORMING TWO HUNDRED HECTARES OF INDUSTRIAL LAND OF POBLENOU.THIS IS AN INITIATIVE OF URBAN RENEWAL AND TRANSFORMATION IN THE CITY OF BARCELONA, WHERE MANY IMPORTANT COMPANIES ARE FIXING THEIR HEADQUARTERS. INDRA THE SLENDER OFFICE TOWER FOR THE ENTERPRISE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INDRA IS LOCATED THERE, WITH A TOTAL HEIGHT OF FIFTY-TWO METERS AND A MINIMUM WIDTH OF ONLY FOURTEEN METERS.THE TOTAL BUILT SURFACE AREA IS 10,375 M2 AND IT CONSISTS OF A GROUND FLOOR PLUS 12 MORE FLOORS. THE HEADQUARTERS IS LOCATED IN A SOLAR TRAPEZOIDAL APPRECIABLY PLANE AND ITS FLOOR IS RECTANGULAR, EXCEPTIONALLY INTERRUPTED BY THE CORNER OF THE INTERSECTION OF STREETS. THE FLOORS LOCATED ABOVE GRADE ARE DEVOTED TO OFFICES, AND THOSE BELOW GRADE TO PARKING FOR 40 VEHICLES AND SERVICE ROOMS FOR PRIVATE USE. THE PROPOSAL IS FOR A TOWER RISING ABOVE A MORE SOLID AND COMPACT THREE-STOREY PLINTH, ALIGNED WITH CARRER TÀNGER. THE TOWER SECTION, WITH A RHOMBOID FLOOR PLAN, FOLLOWS THE LINE OF THE CHAMFERED CORNER, WITHOUT SLAVISHLY REPRODUCING IT, TO REINFORCE THE SLENDER COMPLEXITY OF THE RESULTING VOLUME. ITS TEN STOREYS ARE SEPARATED FROM THE PLINTH BY A SERVICE FLOOR, RECESSED WITH RESPECT TO THE PLANE OF THE FACADE, SO THAT IT SEEMS TO FLOAT ABOVE THE BASE, LENDING IT LIGHTNESS. ON THE GROUND FLOOR IS LOCATED THE MAIN ENTRANCE AND THE LOBBY OF THE BUILDING, WHICH IS ACCESSED FROM THE CORNER. THE VERTICAL STRUCTURE CONSISTS OF A CORE PILLARS SHIELDED AND WHICH LIES AT THE HEART OF THE PLANT, TRIMMING BACK THE FACADE OF THE BUILDING.THIS NUCLEUS WHICH HOUSES COMMUNICATIONS VERTICAL BUILDING STABILIZES HORIZONTAL FORCES OF WIND AND CONTROLS THE NATURAL EFFECT OF OVERTURNING THE SHEER VOLUME BUILT. THE FACADE IS MADE WITH A GLASS CURTAIN WALL OF PANELS 1.30 METERS THAT ALLOW THE VISION OR OPAQUE IT DEPENDING ON THE AREAS LOCATED IMMEDIATELY BEHIND. THE INSIDE GLASS SKIN IS HOUSED WITHIN THE CURTAIN WALL OF ANODIZED ALUMINUM PROFILES.THESE PROFILES ARE REDUCED AND THE PANELS ARE LIMITED TO A

SINGLE SHEET METAL IN ITS WAKE IN FRONT OF THE SCREEN WALLS OF CONCRETE AND MAINTAIN, THUS,THE SAME DISTANCE TO THE EXTERNAL FRONT. TOWARDS THE OUTSIDE, THIS IS CLOSED WITH A SECOND SKIN OF GLASS GLUED ON THE ALUMINUM FRAME CONSTRUCTION ONLY IN AREAS OF VISION. MOREOVER, IN SOME AREAS, THE GLASS WAS REPLACED BY LAMELLAES, ALSO GLASS, ALLOWING VENTILATION OF THE PREMISES INTERIOR. IN RECEASE THAT LEADS TO THE MAIN ENTRANCE, FACADE PANELS HAVE A SPECIAL OUTER SURFACE OF STAINLESS STEEL. THE TECHNICAL PLANT, IN THE FOURTH LEVEL, PRESENTS AN OPEN ENCLOSURE OF METAL

NORTH ELEVATION

SLATS TO ALLOW VENTILATION COMBINED WITH INTERNAL OPAQUE PARTS. THE EXTERNAL SKIN OF THE FACADE IS MADE UP OF PANELS OF STAINLESS STEEL METAL FABRIC THAT ACT AS PERIMETRAL SOLAR PROTECTION (WITH A SHADE COEFFICIENT OF 50%) FOR THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING AS WELL AS CONTRIBUTING TO THE OVERALL LIGHTNESS OF APPEARANCE.A QUARTER OF THESE PANELS HAVE A 90 CM DIAMETER SPHERICAL IMPRESSION CREATED BY DRAWING. THESE ARE LOCATED IN TWO POSITIONS ON THE HEIGHT OF THE PANEL, AND ALTERNATELY FACE INWARDS AND OUTWARDS .IT IS AN ECONOMICAL BUT EFFECTIVE

WAY OF REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF RADIATION INCIDENT ON THE FACADE WITHOUT SACRIFICING LARGE TRANSPARENT GLASS FACADES. IT IS THE RESULT OF RESEARCH INTO WAYS OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURAL DECORATION THAT SERVES TO REINFORCE THE CORPORATE IDENTITY OF THE COMPANY (INDRA’S LOGO CONSISTS OF LOTS OF CIRCUMFERENCES). THIS BEING A CORPORATE BUILDING, DIAPHANOUS FLOORS ARE PROPOSED, ALTHOUGH THE POSSIBILITY HAS BEEN CONSIDERED THAT IN THE FUTURE THEY COULD BE DIVIDED UP INTO SEVERAL UNITS.

RE-SKIN / MORE WITH LESS BY LAVA - Laboratory for Visionary Architecture WHAT INITIALLY BEGAN AS A SPECULATIVE PROPOSAL TO RESHAPE THE UTS TOWER ON BROADWAY HAS EVOLVED INTO A BROADER ARCHITECTURAL IDEA FOR RE-PURPOSING INEFFICIENT OR OUTDATED BUILDINGS AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO DEMOLISHING AND REBUILDING ( WHICH COMES WITH A HUGE FINANCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL EXPENSE) LAVA HAS DEVELOPED A SIMPLE, COST EFFECTIVE AND EASILY CONSTRUCTED BUILDING SKIN THAT CAN POTENTIALLY TRANSFORM THE IDENTITY, SUSTAINABILITY AND INTERIOR COMFORT OF AN EXISTING STRUCTURE SUCH AS THE UTS TOWER. THE ‘SKIN’ IS A TRANSLUCENT COCOON THAT CAN CREATE ITS OWN ‘MICRO CLIMATE’. IT CAN GENERATE ITS OWN ENERGY WITH PHOTO-VOLTAIC CELLS, COULD COLLECT RAIN WATER, IMPROVE THE DISTRIBUTION OF NATURAL DAYLIGHT AND IT CAN USE AVAILABLE CONVECTIVE ENERGY TO POWER THE BUILDING’S VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS.  A PRE-EXISTING BUILDING IS WRAPPED WITH THREEDIMENSIONAL LIGHTWEIGHT, HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPOSITE MESH TEXTILE. SURFACE TENSION ALLOWS THE MEMBRANE TO FREELY STRETCH OVER A LIGHT STEEL FRAME AROUND WALLS AND ROOF ELEMENTS ACHIEVING MAXIMUM VISUAL IMPACT WITH MINIMAL MATERIAL EFFORT.  THE SKIN WITH EMBEDDED LED STRIPS COULD ACT AS AN INTELLIGENT MEDIA SURFACE AND BE USED FOR DYNAMIC ANIMATION AND  TO COMMUNICATE INFORMATION INTO THE PUBLIC REALM – EFFECTIVELY INTEGRATING PRINCIPLES OF ARCHITECTURE, FASHION, MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION DESIGN INTO A NEW HYBRID TYPOLOGY.  “A RE-SKINNED UTS TOWER COULD BE AN EXAMPLE OF SUSTAINABILITY, INNOVATION, CUTTING EDGE DE-

SIGN AND CREATIVE EDUCATION, WITHOUT DEMOLISHING AND REBUILDING THE 1960S ICON,” SAYS CHRIS BOSSE, DIRECTOR OF LAVA. ”WHEN IT WAS BUILT THE BROADWAY TOWER WAS CUTTING EDGE, WITH LATEST BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES AND PRINCIPLES THAT HAVE PARTIALLY BECOME OBSOLETE.” THE RESKINNING TECHNOLOGY COULD BE EASILY APPLIED TO OTHER BUILDINGS IN NEED OF A FACELIFT SUCH AS THE GOULBURN STREET CARPARK, SYDNEY. ONE QUICKLY AND COST-EFFICIENTLY ENHANCE THEIR PERFORMANCE AND AESTHETICS THROUGH THIS MINIMAL INTERVENTION. THE RE-SKIN CONCEPT CONTINUES LAVA’S RESEARCH INTO SUSTAINABLE PUBLIC ARCHITECTURE BY COMBINING LIGHTWEIGHT CONTEMPORARY MATERIALS WITH THE LATEST DIGITAL FABRICATION TECHNOLOGIES WITH THE AIM OF ACHIEVING MORE (ARCHITECTURE) WITH LESS (MATERIAL/ENERGY/TIME).
