Mr. Altvater wrote histories of Highlands Hammock State Park, the Sebring Firemen’s Association, and the Sebring Chamber of Commerce. He also edited the Sebring Historical Society newsletter from 1969 to 1986 and filled it with entertaining stories about Sebring’s history.

Equally important, he organized and compiled the accomplishments of others into readable material. Amateur historians’ Park and Albert DeVane’s voluminous and comprehensive research on the Heartland, the State of Florida, and the Seminole Indians became a 2-volume publication called DeVane’s Early Florida History, which can be found in the Library of Congress. John Newcomb’s diary of early Sebring and Milton Baker’s photographs of early Sebring, which date from 1911 to 1916, became the Newcomb-Baker Collection. In total, Mr. Altvater either wrote or compiled 19 books. He laboriously hand set the type for many of them and hand fed the copy on his multigraph printing machine. He received many honors throughout his lifetime, including Most Valuable Member of the Sebring Historical Society. He died in 1994 at the age of 96. „
