A Legacy of Success

Kathleen Munson, a native of Saginaw, Michigan, moved to Lakeland after her husband’s job was transferred in the early 80’s. Not one to sit idly by, Kathleen jumped into the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce with both feet. After 27 years working for the Chamber, 22 years as president, she retired leaving a long legacy of advocacy of local businesses and schools. “It was a rewarding career and makes you appreciate how vibrant an economy and community we have,” says Kathleen. “Since I’ve retired, which I highly recommend, I have had the opportunity to volunteer. It is a gratifying feeling being able to give back.” Kathleen, with her experience with the Chamber and her church, has continued living a life giving back to the community through the local school district. “I’ve gotten involved with HEARTH Project which is a program under Polk County Schools. It provides service to homeless students. Right now we have over 3,000 homeless students enrolled in Polk County Schools. It’s a huge issue.” The HEARTH Project assists homeless and in-transition families and children. Its goal is to tear down any obstacles that would prevent a student from coming to school by providing transportation, aid with lunch and school supplies as well as hygiene necessities. “I was overwhelmed by all the services this program provides. Their mission is to get homeless students enrolled to continue their education but in order to do that they need to provide their meals including the free or reduced lunch. It’s a neat program and I am thoroughly enjoying it.” Kathleen is also very involved in her church, The First United Methodist Church of Lakeland, and hopes to become more involved with Neighborhood Ministries, an after school program, by tutoring and helping wherever needed.
