His patented research involves combining a spinach gene with conventional citrus trees such as Rio Red grapefruit and Hamlin orange. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved the application for an Experimental Use Permit that clears the way for substantial acreages of transgenic citrus to be planted. The application was submitted by Southern Gardens Citrus, one of the largest citrus producers in Florida, which is working with several universities and state and federal agencies to come up with a solution. There are many more hopeful stories like these – brilliant minds coming up with ideas to control the disease. The less-than-savory journey down the citrus greening path has been long, but let’s not give up the hope for a solution. ¢
