S Deep Six Saturday 8 March 8 - 10.30pm Shire Oak Heart Rock for Nepal featuring Deep Six. Following last year’s highly successful event, this is the second benefit for the Khiraule village project in Nepal. Join us for an entertaining evening with Nepalese food to buy for your supper, and dance music from Deep Six. The money raised will go towards funding a much needed health worker.

Caesar Must Die Tuesday 11 March 8 - 10.15pm Shire Oak

Films at Heart presents the film Caesar Must Die . In Rebibbia Prison in Italy, its inmate theatre program puts on a production of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. As they rehearse, the prisoners find that the classic play has both a striking resonance and contrast to their confined lives.

The Unfortunate Case of Patrick Bourke Thursday 13 March 8 - 9.30pm Claremont Room Headingley Lit Fest presents an illustrated talk in partnership with Irish Arts. Between 1841 and 1861 the Irish population of the township of Leeds tripled, from 5,027 to 14,905. The bulk of this community lived in the east end of the town in an area characterised by destitution, poor sanitation, disease and crime.

Caddy Cooper Friday 14 March 8 - 10.30pm Shire Oak Caddy Cooper is an exhilarating acoustic country, blues, folk singer who entices her audience with tales of life, love, loss and the fragility of the human condition. Hailing from Western Australia, Caddy is currently touring the UK to promote her debut album ‘Snapshot’. Her live shows have been receiving rave reviews and Caddy will be backed on the night by her band.

Words on Tap Survival Kit Saturday 15 March 2 - 5pm Ridge room Headingley Lit Fest presents a night of poetry. Matthew Hedley Stoppard will lead a workshop focusing on some essentials to perpetuate your poetry. The afternoon will incorporate the importance of ‘voice’ using vinyl recordings of poets, technique and figures of speech, with close attention to zeugma, and poetry games.

Writing for Surviving Tuesday 18 March 11.30am - 1pm Shire Oak Headingley Lit Fest presents Writing for Surviving - a collection of poetry, stories and plays based around the theme of surviving. The event features the work of the WEA’s weekly classes with Alison Taft both of which meet in Heart, together with the work of writers from the Osmondthorpe Resource Centre.

Helen Burke Wednesday 19 March 8 - 9.30pm Claremont Room Headingley Lit Fest presents Helen Burke. Helen is a writer, performance poet , visual artist and fabric designer. Her work has been set to music both here and in America. She has read in London, Paris, New York, and Rhode Island in the U.S. with the Poet Laureate. She regularly hosts a radio show for East Leeds FM Radio.

Jo Shapcott and John Wedgewood-Clark Thursday 20 March 7.30 - 10pm Cafe One of the most original voices of her generation Jo Shapcott’s collection Of Mutability (2010) won the Costa Book Award, and in 2011 she was awarded the Queen’s gold medal for poetry. Rich in minerals, marine life and the cries of people and gulls, John Wedgwood-Clarke’s debut collection, Ghost Pot, charts the ever-changing terrain and history of the North Yorkshire Coast between Flamborough and Saltburn.

Kasseldown Quintet Saturday 22 March 7.30 - 10.30pm Shire Oak Jazz-at-heart presents Kasseldown Quintet - A new project led by Harry Orme, formed in late 2013 playing all original compositions. With special guest Matt Anderson, who has been making waves performing and recording as a sideman with Jiannis Pavlidis, Jamie Taylor and Jamil Sheriff, as well as leading his own projects.

Headingley Lit Fest presents Looking Out, Looking Up. Peter Spafford and Richard Ormrod return with a spray of new songs, settings, and poems. Peter’s work has been performed on radio, television, in theatres, art centres, hospitals, prisons, and in the bath. Richard leads numerous bands and plays up to ten instruments in the course of the evening.

Jazz-at-heart - Erik Svela Trio. The trio features Erik Svela (Guitar), Simon Read (Bass) and John Arnesen (Drums). The band plays firmly within the hard-bop tradition drawing influences from legendary guitarists such as Wes Montgomery and Pat Martino. The trio’s repertoire is a mix of interpretations of standards and some original tunes.

The Horizon String Quartet Thursday 17 April 7.30 - 10pm Shire Oak The Horizon String Quartet is a young and dynamic string ensemble based in London. With special guests David Greed and Alvaro Siculiana they will be playing works by Bach, Beethoven and Shostakovich.
