HOME of the cool: Miles Davis’ childhood house heart of fundraiser
By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com
EAST ST. LOUIS — The rebirth of the childhood home of Miles Dewey Davis has been a great feat to take on and a brick fundraiser has ensued with the deadline approaching soon to buy a brick to be laid at the legend’s namesake The House of Miles East St. Louis (HOME). HOME is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization on a mission to restore the legendary musician’s childhood home where he spent his formative years. His family moved from Alton when Davis was 6 months old. His father practiced dentistry while Davis grew up and went to high school before leaving for his musical journey. The home at 1701 Kansas Ave., East St. Louis, had been vacant for years until HOME founders Lauren Parks and Gary Pearson began extensive repairs in 2011. They eventually started programming for youth, local artists exhibits and limited tours.
To help fund the project, people can buy bricks online at https://www.fundraisingbrick.com/online-orders/home/. Each brick will bear the etched names of donors, loved ones, soldiers, veterans, firefighters, police officers, schools, churches, special people and special dates. After acquiring the 1920s structure, Parks, HOME president, and Pearson, HOME vice president, began planning how and what it would become. After the house was found to be structurally sound, the two created a nonprofit that would later become HOME. “The vision of what HOME would be was quite intense, as well as methodically developed and broken into phases,” Parks said. Phase I began in 2015 and was completed in 2016 with the opening of HOME’s initial “Kind of Blue” celebration and fundraiser. The event let people see the renovation of the external and internal structure, excavation of surrounding perimeters and grounds, HVAC installation, new windows, a
handicap accessible ramp, perimeter fencing, new vinyl siding, reconstructed floors, walls, ceilings, new plumbing and new electrical wiring. “The soft opening at the conclusion of September 2016 was set and went well with what was to become our annual event in honor of Miles Dewey Davis and his legacy,” Parks said. Phases II and III immediately followed the initial phase. Phase II began in July 2020 with the renovation of the outside entertainment courtyard, stage, deck, surveillance office, multipurpose garage/lab, demolition of adjacent grounds for courtyard seating and the removal of trees to create the extended outside entertainment venue. The upstairs of the house was transformed into a music lab co-created by students. “We allowed them to suggest how the learning venue and experience should look like,” Parks said. “In the lab, several instruments’ theories are learned by our students’ direct engagement with our facilitators and instructors.”
This rendering shows the multiple phases of The House of Miles East St. Louis (HOME) project to restore the childhood home of Miles Davis born in Alton. The family moved to East St. Louis when he was 6 months old. (For The Edge)
On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, March 11, 2021 • 5 Across from HOME, Parks and Pearson began creating HOME’s Enrichment Center at 1636 Missouri Ave. Built in the late 1800s, it serves as HOME’s second educational component. Phase I and II began here with the development of HOME’s organic gardening program and MUTTI-GREES, which is a HOME original program in partnership with Purina. MUTTI-GREES teaches and reinforces social and emotional development of youth by instilling compassion and empathy, while supporting stray animals that would be otherwise euthanized. Phase II also included developing a healthy eating-and-living component to reinforce those values. Parks and Pearson also created Sigma Leadership Development. To keep the holistic student focus, an exercise pad has been constructed to aid the physical fitness curriculum “Movement with Miles.” Phase II also included HOME’s Enrichment Center work such as replacing and installing a new concrete driveway and perimeter fencing to support the exercise and dog curriculum. The Solar Panel Organic Butterfly Lab is under construction in a portion of the garage area. “The monarch butterfly, which is HOME’s logo, will be given life through the process of developing a butterfly house with the aid of solar power,” Parks said. “Each student will be facilitated on the process and life creation of this endangered species.” Milkweed will nurture the butterfly larvae. Once a life is created, students will support the butterflies as they help pollinate an organic garden adjacent to the lab. Phase III will include development and construction of HOME’s lower level (a cellar) where Davis developed his first band and often practiced. The venue will be called “Miles’ Cellar.” “The purpose of this particular piece is basically fundraising and promotion, and to support our educational programming,” Parks said. The cellar will serve as an entertainment component able to hold up to 100 bottles of wine. It will be open for private events while encouraging patrons to sponsor private events at the cellar. Each wine bottle stored will generate a monthly donation. Phase III also will include the construction and renovation of HOME’s newly acquired property at 1709 Kansas Ave. The University of Illinois has partnered with HOME to develop and

HOME acquired the Davis property in 2011. Davis’ brother, Vernon, now deceased, last lived in the house. Renovations began in 2015, educational enrichment programming in 2016 and HOME opened as a public space last year. Its interior has retained as much originality as possible, from the hardwood floors in the four main rooms and knotty pine walls in the entryway to the wood ceiling. (Jill Moon|The Edge)

Post-winter garden prep Lawns and gardens can bear the brunt of winter weather and are often in need of tender loving care by the time spring arrives. Preparing a garden for spring and summer involves assessing any damage that harsh weather might have caused. As temperatures climb, gardeners can heed the following post-winter garden preparation tips in an effort to ensure some successful gardening in the months ahead. • Assess the damage. Even if winter was mild, gardens might still have suffered some damage. Inspect garden beds and any fencing or barriers designed to keep wildlife from getting into the garden. Before planting anew, fix any damage that Mother Nature or local wildlife might have caused over the past several months. • Clear debris. Garden beds and surrounding landscapes that survived winter without being damaged might still be littered with debris. Remove fallen leaves, branches and even litter that blew about on windy winter days before planting season. Make sure to discard any debris effectively so it does not find its way back into the garden. • Turn the greenhouse into a clean house. Spring cleaning is not just for the interior of a home. Cleaning a greenhouse in advance of spring can help gardeners evict any overwintering pests that can threaten plant life once spring gardening season arrives. A thorough cleaning, which should include cleaning the inside of greenhouse glass and washing flower pots and plant trays, also can prevent plant diseases from surviving into spring. • Check for pests. Speak with a local gardening professional to determine if there are any local pests to look out for and how to recognize and remove these pets from gardens. Pests may hibernate in the soil over the winter, and such unwelcome visitors can make it difficult for gardens to thrive come spring and summer. • Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks. Spring gardening season is right around the corner, so now is an ideal time to prepare gardens for the warmer seasons ahead.

When it can be smart to hire a painting pro Few things can revitalize a home more readily than a fresh coat of paint. Thanks in part to the affordability of paint and its ease of application, painting is something that even novice DIYers can typically handle. According to the marketing advice guru Brandon Gaille, it is estimated that residential interior paint only lasts around three years before it needs to be updated. Exterior paint can fade, chip and peel due to various environmental factors. As a result, many homes can likely use a fresh coat of paint in at least one room. As DIY-friendly as painting can be, when attempting to paint the interior or exterior of their homes, homeowners may learn that some painting projects are best left to the professionals. Painting requires skill, patience and a knowledge of how various paints — including finishes for particular applications — will hold up. Novice painters may do more harm than good by dripping paint on expensive carpeting or floors or fail to recognize the nuances that indicate a spot-on painting job. Professional painters have spent hours upon hours learning the ropes of what works — and what does not. Painters often understand that painstaking preparatory work is crucial to getting pristine finished results. Walls and ceilings must be properly repaired and prepared even before a base coat is applied. Professional painters also have an eye for details. And because professional painters make a
business out of doing interior and exterior surfaces, they understand which techniques can improve efficiency. That means a professional job can typically be completed much more quickly than a DIY project. Even though some people think they’ll save money by painting their own homes, that’s not necessarily true. Professionals already have all the equipment necessary, unlike novices who may need to make repeated and potentially costly trips to the hardware store for supplies. Plus, if mistakes happen, DIYers have to spend additional time and money fixing them. Safety can be a large motivator for turning painting over to a pro. Navigating exterior areas or tall interior ceilings can be challenging and may require scaffolding or tall

ladders DIYers do not have. Risk of falls or other injuries increase with lack of experience. Painting can give a home a facelift, and oftentimes it is smart to turn the work over to professionals to ensure the job is done just right.

Cold weather can take its toll on a property, especially in regions of the world where winters are harsh. Most parts of the landscape are vulnerable to damage from winter storms, but trees may be especially susceptible. By the end of winter, many homeowners wonder if their trees would benefit from some professional TLC. Tree services provide a host of services. While fall is a popular time to remove trees from a property, doing so in spring is not unheard of, especially if trees were affected by winter storms and now pose a threat to a home and the people who live inside it. Homeowners considering tree services can explore the following ways that some professional arbor attention can protect them and their homes. • Tree services can help protect a home’s foundation. Old trees that stretch well into the sky can be captivating, but they also can pose a threat to a home’s foundation. Such trees may have especially large root zones that may extend beneath walkways and even a home. In the latter instance, foundations may crack as roots try to stake their claim to the ground beneath a home. According to the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor, homeowners pay an average of just over $4,000 to repair foundation issues, though major problems can cost considerably more than that. A professional tree service can remove aging trees that might be beautiful and awe-inspiring but still pose a threat to a home and the areas surrounding it. • Tree services can improve visibility. Trees
that have aged a bit since their last trimming might affect the view of a property from inside a home. Overgrown branches can compromise residents’ ability to see and experience the natural beauty just outside their windows. The average homeowner may be able to trim short trees on his or her own, but if views from the second floor of a home or higher have been compromised, it’s much safer to call a professional tree service. Such services have the right tools and experienced personnel necessary to safely trim high branches on tall trees. • Tree services can help prevent future damage. Even if trees made it through a recent winter unscathed, that’s no guarantee next winter or even the coming seasons of spring, summer and fall won’t ultimately prove their undoing. Travelers Insurance notes that weather-related roof damage, including damage resulting from falling limbs and branches weighed down by snow during the winter months, accounted for more than half of all Travelers property loss claims between 2009 and 2016. According to BNC Insurance and Risk Advisors, homeowners may be liable if a tree they knew posed a threat falls onto a passerby or a neighbor’s property and causes damage or injury. Having all trees properly trimmed each year, but especially those that can fall on your home and your neighbors’ homes, may prevent future damage and legal issues. Tree services can ensure trees maintain their awe-inspiring beauty and help homeowners protect their homes and their belongings.

What to do after incurring storm damage The 2017 hurricane season proved especially devastating for millions of people in both Texas and Florida. Upon making landfall in Texas in late August, Hurricane Harvey became the first Category 3 or higher hurricane in the United States since Hurricane Wilma in 2005. In its wake, Harvey left damage that Texas governor Greg Abbott estimated could cost as much as $180 billion to repair. Just a couple of weeks after Hurricane Harvey touched down, Hurricane Irma hit Florida as a Category 4 storm, knocking out power to nearly seven million people. Severe storms like hurricanes do not discriminate, and when such storms finally dissipate, people from all walks of life are left to deal with the often devastating consequences. Property damage is one such consequence, and the following are some things people can do in the aftermath of storms that caused damage to their property. • Contact your insurance provider. Not all damage resulting from storms will necessarily be covered by insurance policies, but it’s still imperative that people contact their insurance companies as soon as possible after their homes or vehicles have been damaged.
Agents can help policy holders learn if their policies cover the damage done to their property and to what extent their coverage will help them recover. Many people will likely be making similar calls, so policy holders should try to be as patient as possible. • Document the damage. People whose property has been damaged should use their smartphones and cameras to document the damage as extensively as possible. Take photos from various angles before you begin cleaning up. Providers may require visual evidence of the damage before they begin processing your claim, so ask about those requirements when contacting your insurance agent. • Avoid downed power lines. In addition to protecting the investments you have made in your property and your possessions, it’s important to remember to protect yourself. Avoid downed power lines, reporting any to your local power company as soon as you see them. • Let the professionals do the work. It can be tempting for homeowners to try to do some electrical work around their homes after their homes have been damaged by storms. Electricians are likely busy and might not be
able to assess or repair damage for days, if not weeks. But it’s still best to wait and allow professionals to do the work. Experienced professionals recognize potentially harmful, if not deadly, issues that may be lurking beneath the damage, so it’s always best to leave the work to private electricians or local power company work crews. • Revisit insurance policies. After suffering damage to their homes or vehicles, men and
women may benefit by revisiting their coverage and increasing that coverage in anticipation of future disasters. Storm damage can turn individuals’ lives upside down. But remaining calm and working in harmony with insurance agencies and power companies can help storm victims recover quickly.

Davis statue featured in skin cancer campaign By Jill Moon jill.moon@htearst.com ALTON — Miles Davis has been recruited to help raise awareness for skin cancer. His statue on Third Street in Alton will be dressed up for Skin Cancer Awareness Month, according to Miles Davis Jazz Festival chairperson Lee Barham. “It’s a one-day event, May 1, and the dressing will be removed at the end of the event,” he said. The jazz festival board worked with Godfrey-based Pride Inc. to erect the bronze Davis statue in front of Chez Marilyn, 119 W. 3rd St., Alton, in 2015. Lisa Woods, chief operating officer of The GroundSwell Group who works with Barham on the jazz festival, contacted Barham about two weeks ago to discuss the statue as part of the group’s Skin Cancer Awareness Month campaign. The Alton statue was selected as Illinois’ statue for the campaign.
“We dress a statue for one day all in order to educate as many people as possible about skin safety and protection,” Woods said. “The goal of the program is to decrease the frightening statistic that one in five people will develop skin cancer at some point in their life.” The GroundSwell Group will offer a small stipend to Alton for its use of the statue in the campaign. The statue will be dressed in an outfit that will go over the existing statue and not cause damage, organizers said. A representative will be on-site throughout the day to ensure the safety of the statue and its viewers. The GroundSwell Group will be collaborating and making a donation to a variety of Skin Cancer Awareness organizations upon culmination of the national effort. “We feel honored there’s only two statues of Miles Davis in the world, one in France and one in Alton, because he was born here,” Barham said. “And this is bringing awareness to people undergoing skin cancer and enlightening them on questions that they need the answers to.” Barham said the event is expected to bring tourists to
downtown Alton. “Still going through the virus, we encourage people to wear a mask,” he said. “But this will bring people out who want to and need to come out. “People have been in a cocoon for one and a half years,” he said. “This event will not only be showcasing awareness, but also showcasing our city. “It all works together,” he said. “I’m real proud that Alton has the statue here to commemorate one of our own. If we are becoming a tourist town, we need other entities to attract people here.” Barham said plans remain uncertain about this year’s Miles Davis Jazz Festival, canceled last year because of the pandemic. “We’re waiting to see how the virus goes,” he said. “We might postpone it until later in the year. We’re hoping we don’t have to, but we will have it.” For more information about May’s Skin Cancer Awareness campaign visit www.groundswellgroup.com. For more information about the Miles Davis Jazz Festival, visit the group’s Facebook page.

One out of four not bad I saw four theatrically released movies since my last comments about the state of the movie industry. Since then, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema chain, based in Austin, Texas, has filed for bankruptcy protection. Most of their theaters have not reopened from last year’s COVID-mandated shutdown. They don’t have any locations close to St. Louis, but its iconic Mainstreet theater in Kansas City is lovely and I hope they find a way to survive this post-pandemic nightmare. Two of the movies I saw, “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “The Mauritanian,” are heavy dramas that revolve around, respectively, the Black Panther Party of 1968-1972 and the tragedy of 9/11 in 2001. I wasn’t attached to the plot of “Judas,” as it is not a very interesting movie until the scenes that examine the assassination of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya). This is an outright shame because the revolutionary thinking that Hampton and the Panthers had at the time is so relevant to conversations happening now. “The Mauritanian” is a similar type of movie, but its depiction of the tortured questioning of a detainee at Guantanamo Bay is beyond uncomfortable. It detracts from anything of merit in the picture. The current movie I like best is “Land,” directed by and starring Robin Wright. Her character, Edee, is the victim of a domestic trauma that the audience pieces together through gradual revelations and flashbacks. In her grief, the miserable, suicidal Edee decides that she’s going to move to a
cabin in the mountains and avoid all people and the trappings of happiness that their lives might afford and hers cannot. It’s a terrible plan for coping with depression, I’d think. It does make for an interesting and introspective look at a woman’s pain. Modestly outfitted for living alone without utilities in the Rockies, Edee barely survives her first winter. After a bear nearly destroys her cabin and eats her food supply, she’s left on death’s door, facing starvation and exposure in a way that compounds the demons she came there to avoid. It’s here that Miguel (Demián Bichir) enters her life. He happens upon her during a hunting trip and notices that she’s in drastic need of life-saving help. He nurses her back to health and teaches her to hunt, farm and navigate the harsh (and beautiful!) landscape. He does all of this unsolicited and without much of a thank you from her. He may have saved her life in the height
of the winter storms, but he saves her life’s outlook, too. They have monthly visits with each other until he begs off one month and doesn’t return for a few years. The absence of her now only friend leads Edee off the mountain to a small town where she attempts to remember how to act in public, in order to reunite with someone who helped her because she was “in his path.” It’s touching and low-key, and the dialogue in this movie is sweet and assured. The fourth movie I saw was “Tom & Jerry” with my two oldest nieces. We had fun, but the movie offered nothing illuminating to me, beyond my thoughts of at what age I can start to expose them to real cinema. Enough about that. “Land” runs 89 minutes and is rated PG-13 for thematic content, brief strong language, and partial nudity. I give this movie three and a half stars out of four.

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington I Found the Foundry Last year, we tried Foundry Public House in Edwardsville for the first time. It was already in the time of “outdoor dining only,” and we happened to choose a lovely day (weather-wise) and sat on the patio next to the establishment’s brick building. We were there for Sunday brunch, and if you recall reading what I had to say about it then, we thought it was fabulous. A more recent trip to the Foundry for curbside pickup dining gave us a Vicki different – yet still very satBennington isfying - experience. From the long list of choices on the lunch and dinner menu, my husband chose the Foundry Burger, with a double stack of house-ground chuck, bacon, bleu cheese steak butter, balsamic onions, cheddar cheese, Bibb lettuce, bread and butter pickles, and tomato. Now that’s a lot of burger and toppings, and his reviews of
the taste were nothing but complimentary. Mumbles that sort of sounded like yum and good could be heard here and there as he ate as much as he could in one sitting. And of course, the F stamped into the top bun added a unique touch. For me? I chose the double decker BLT, because I am definitely a BLT girl. BLTs always sound good to me. I make them at home quite a bit, and I order them out, as well. I was certainly not disappointed with the Foundry’s take on the classic sandwich. It had a half pound of bacon, mayo, Bibb lettuce, and tomatoes on three layers of toasted white bread, and it was delicious. If you want to do more than sandwiches or want to switch it out, start with an appetizer Maybe fried Brussels sprouts, Gulf shrimp grilled with an orange adobo glaze, served with mango pico de gallo or Gulf shrimp sautéed in a garlic butter sauce, topped with parmesan cheese. In my book, just about anything with Gulf shrimp would be a good way to start a

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, March 11, 2021 • 21 meal. There is also a meat and cheese plate – really, it’s like a charcuterie tray - with an assortment of meat and cheese, pretzel chips, candied walnuts and fig jam. One of the most popular is the beer cheese fondue with pretzel chips. Other choices include soups, flatbreads with grilled chicken, beer cheese and bacon, and salads like Foundry’s Green or the Santa Fe with marinated steak. If our sandwich choices didn’t catch your fancy, there’s more than a dozen sandwiches on the Foundry’s list to choose your own, including fish, ham, chicken parm, Chicago dog and several others. They certainly aren’t short on range of choices in any menu category. Additional items are offered, like seasoned sweet potato tots, seasoned homemade chips, and you can add an egg to anything if you’re looking for that extra bit of protein. And OK, I couldn’t help it. I kept thinking about our past brunch trip, so just to remind you – the Foundry has a wonderful brunch menu, and the items we tried were so good, I ended up thinking about them later, even much later. Like my Paris eggs benedict – a split and toasted croissant topped with baked ham, brie cheese
and two sunny side up eggs. Some of the most popular brunch items are the Foundry platter with two eggs, your choice of sausage, ham, steak or bacon, and white or wheat toast. Or maybe you want to try buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy. There’s also a bottomless mimosa bar, with four different flavors - traditional orange, cranberry, grapefruit or apple. Inside, Foundry Public House is an upscale bar and grill with an industrial feel, exposed brick walls and hardwood floors. The bar offers a wide selection of draft beers and dozens of bottled choices. Wine, martinis, several whiskey, scotch and bourbon selections are also on the menu. And the curbside pickup was easy and quick. Foundry Public House is located at 126 N. Main St. in Edwardsville. It’s open seven days a week. Brunch is served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, visit www.foundrypublichouse.com.

Murder, but gentler: ‘Cozy’ mysteries a pandemic-era balm
By TAMARA LUSH Associated Press
“A book,” author Neil Gaiman may or may not have said, “is a dream you hold in your hand.” And right now, in an era of pandemic and polarization, Americans have ‚Äî and need ‚Äî a lot of dreams. We dream of unfettered travel, of a world free of face masks and hand sanitizer, of days that are exciting and new and not the grinding tedium of spending hour after hour staring, horrified, at the TV news. We dream of going back to school. Of eating a meal with family. Of hugs. And some of us ‚Äî well, some of us dream of murder. Small-town murder. Gentle murder. Quiet murder. For those who find their dreams in books, there’s a group of readers who are hungrily consuming a particular style of narrative to escape from the past year’s reality: “cozy” mysteries. In an unfathomably complex year, a gently told tale of murder and mayhem whittles the sharp edges of reality to a manageable, smooth surface. “Murder is definitely dark, but in a cozy the reader is with the protagonist every step of the way as each clue is revealed,” says Michelle Vega, executive editor of Berkley, who works with several cozy authors. “You can enjoy the perfect cup of tea and pretend you’re sitting in that comfy bookshop with the protagonist, smiling along with the banter as she and friends figure out whodunit. It is escapist perfection.” In television form, the cozy can be seen in popular shows such as “Murder, She Wrote,” “Midsomer Murders” and “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.” Cozies claim roots in early 20th-century British mysteries by such writers as Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. But with the advent of the e-book, authors are setting their gentle crime scenes in RV campgrounds in the American South, tourist towns in the Pacific northwest and in neighborhoods in Brooklyn, to name a few. The genre’s parameters are few: no swearing, no sex, and little to no gore. Just what the pandemic-era doctor ordered. “The cozy mystery is a familiar way to encounter the two seemingly unreconcilable realities of death and country peace at the same time,” says Sarah Allison, an associate professor of English at Loyola New Orleans who is working on a book about “escape reading.” “The restoration of order at the end of the novel might be less significant than the way this genre makes beautiful scenery and grisly details feel like they go together naturally,” she said in an email. Such mysteries, she says, promise a messy murder and a tidy resolu-
tion, “a welcome contrast to the way we’ve all been suspended between life as it was before COVID and life as it will be after.” Kelly Vaiman, a longtime cozy fan, has tried to avoid thinking about real life this past year. First she was wary of going places due to the pandemic, then her elderly mother’s health declined while in a Pennsylvania nursing home. Vaiman couldn’t travel to say goodbye, and her mother died. “After her passing, during the mourning period, I just couldn’t handle the grief,” Vaiman says. “So I’d pick up a cozy mystery to take my mind off everything.” She estimates that she reads 120 books a year. They’re not all all cozies, but those are what she turns to when she needs a comforting read. Valerie Burns writes gentle murder mysteries under the pen name of V.M. Burns, and her “Mystery Bookshop” series is now six stories long. Since the pandemic began in early 2020, she’s noticed more readers are taking the time to email her about her work, seeking that human connection that’s sorely missing. Burns, who lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is an avid cozy reader as well as a writer of them. She acknowledges the unusual nature of cozies ‚Äî that they revolve around a murder yet are also soothing to read. But, she adds, trying to solve a mystery gives a feeling of accomplishment when so much of life seems stalled. “It’s basically a puzzle, but there’s that safety net in knowing there’s not going to be a whole lot of blood and guts and violence,” she says, laughing. “It’s contradictory. A murder mystery with no violence. But I can pick up a cozy, and can figure out clues and try to figure out whodunit but I don’t have to live in all of the horror associated with true crime or a noir.” Esi Sogah, a senior editor at Kensington Books, says she’s seen an uptick in cozy mystery sales in the past year. She believes that the genre’s settings ‚Äî often picturesque small towns, quirky villages, or unique neighborhoods ‚Äî allow homebound readers to travel in their minds. “Sitting in cafes, going book clubs. Browsing in a bookstore in fictional world,” she says. “All the stuff you can’t do right now.” Unlike big blockbuster stories that revolve around one near-superhuman character (who is usually a man), cozy series cultivate an amateur sleuth (usually a woman) and a cast of quirky secondary characters. Readers become attached to the entire ensemble, says author Bree Baker, and consider them old friends. That’s why readers love series that stretch to multiple books. “I think we all need a place to belong, at the core of everything. We need to have our people,” Baker says.
And at a time when we can’t see our own people in real life, fictional stand-ins will have to do. Solving a murder in one’s mind, dreaming of the day when we can languidly enjoy a coffee and conversation with friends, knowing that what’s right will prevail in the end ‚Äî those are the reasons people turn to cozies.
And, not coincidentally, they overlap with the ways people are coping at this moment in history. “We have enough horror in our day to day lives,” Burns says. “Right now, that’s all I want to do is escape. Escape into a world where justice prevails.”

He said, she said: AP writers predict 2021 Grammy winners
By MESFIN FEKADU and KRISTIN M. HALL AP Music Writers
NEW YORK (AP) ‚Äî Putting out music in a pandemic, without the ability to connect directly with fans through touring, felt sort of like a tree falling in the forest with no one around to hear it. Experiencing music in 2020 became a solo experience, for good and for bad, and music that was able to transcend the physical bubbles we all put around ourselves felt rare and special. In some ways, the Grammy nominees represented that difference with albums and music meant for self-exploration or dancing like no one was watching. And sometimes the omissions speak volumes. Associated Press Music Writers Mesfin Fekadu and Kristin M. Hall dissect the best of an extremely unpredictable year in music. The Grammys will air on March 14. _________ ALBUM OF THE YEAR: “Chilombo,” Jhen√© Aiko; “Black Pumas (Deluxe Edition),” Black Pumas; “Everyday Life,” Coldplay; “Djesse Vol. 3,” Jacob Collier; “Women In Music Pt. III,” HAIM; “Future Nostalgia,” Dua Lipa; “Hollywood’s Bleeding,” Post Malone; “folklore,” Taylor Swift. FEKADU: Congratulations Taylor Swift, you will make history and become the first female artist to have three albums win album of the year at the Grammy Awards. Though “folklore” is the best of this bunch in my opinion ‚Äî with Jhen√© Aiko a close second ‚Äî the issue here is that the Recording Academy has designed a swift win for Tay Tay. The Grammys didn’t nominate Swift’s last two albums for this honor, and they are making up for it this year with easy competition. While Dua Lipa and Post Malone had multiple hits, that won’t be enough for them to win this. No shade, and as much as I love HAIM, Black Pumas and Jhen√©, do you really think they have a chance of winning here? No. And who even remembered that Coldplay dropped an album? There’s a small chance that the uber talented Jacob Collier ‚Äî if you don’t know him LOOK HIM UP! ‚Äî could win, but it’s not likely. If the academy wanted to really challenge Swift and “folklore,” they would have nominated critically acclaimed albums from Fiona Apple, Brittany Howard, Tame Impala or even The Weeknd ‚Äî acts who have a real shot at winning. HALL: I’m sending you a virtual fistbump, Mesfin. When I look at this list, I think more about the albums I loved that weren’t nominated. While Swift’s introspective pandemic album definitely deserves to be in this category, “folklore” feels like a safe, obvious
choice for voters. We’ve seen artists (cough cough, Fiona, cough cough, Run the Jewels) take great creative leaps and bounds and yet we’re served up a pre-packaged win. That being said, there are sometimes under-theradar wins in this category, so I think HAIM’s complex and intriguing album has a chance (however slight) to win. _________ RECORD OF THE YEAR: “Black Parade,” Beyonc√©; “Colors,” Black Pumas; “Rockstar,” DaBaby and Roddy Ricch; “Say So,” Doja Cat; “Everything I Wanted,” Billie Eilish; “Don’t Start Now,” Dua Lipa; “Circles,” Post Malone; “Savage,” Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonc√©. HALL: Three words, “Classy, bougie, ratchet,” propelled Megan Thee Stallion to viral fame with an insanely catchy song while her fellow Houston native added fire to the remix. Rap songs don’t often win in these top categories and with Beyonc√© and DaBaby also competing for votes, I predict one of the most popular songs of the year probably isn’t going to win here. Dua Lipa put the dance club in our bedrooms this year with “Don’t Start Now” and she’ll walk away a winner. FEKADU: That’s a smart choice, Kristin! Normally I would think Dua Lipa ‚Äî who is this decade’s Katy Perry (no Grammy wins) ‚Äî wouldn’t have a chance here. But then I remembered that Dua won best new artist over H.E.R. and Luke Combs, and also picked
up best dance recording that year, which proves voters really like her. Still, “Don’t Start Now” won’t win now. My mind tells me Beyonc√© will win her first record of the year honor, but my body says Billie will win her second. _________ SONG OF THE YEAR (songwriter’s
award): “Black Parade,” Beyonc√©, Jay-Z, Derek Dixie, Denisia Andrews, Stephen Bray, Brittany Coney, Akil King, Kim “Kaydence” Krysiuk and Rickie “Caso” Tice; “The Box,” Roddy Ricch, Samuel Gloade, Larrance Dopson, Adarius Moragne, Eric Sloan and Khirye Anthony Tyler; “cardigan,” Taylor Swift and Aaron Dessner; “Circles,” Post Malone, Louis
On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, March 11, 2021 • 25 Bell, Adam Feeney, Kaan Gunesberk and Billy Walsh; “Don’t Start Now,” Dua Lipa, Caroline Ailin, Ian Kirkpatrick and Emily Warren; “Everything I Wanted,” Billie Eilish and Finneas; “I Can’t Breathe,” H.E.R., Dernst Emile II and Tiara Thomas; “If the World Was Ending,” Julia Michaels and JP Saxe. FEKADU: Just rename this award “The Eilish Family Prize.” HALL: I am not really feeling a Grammys 2020 redux this year. And where is “Blinding Lights”? Nevertheless, “Black Parade” is a well-crafted cinematic celebration that evokes the history of Black music. Even without releasing an album last year, Beyonc√© is still dominating the Grammys and I think she has a resonating and timely message. _________ BEST NEW ARTIST: Ingrid Andress; Phoebe Bridgers; Chika; Noah Cyrus; D Smoke; Doja Cat; Kaytranada; Megan Thee Stallion. HALL: While the records from Andress and Bridgers were an emotional salve during a tough year, Megan’s momentum is unstoppable. She built up to her debut full-length record, “Good News,” with back-to-back hits and huge collaborations on songs like “Hot Girl Summer” with Nicki Minaj and backing up Cardi B on “WAP.” She’s also used her platform in the past year to speak about violence against Black women. This stallion has already won the race. FEKADU: Let’s not forget she got shot in the foot and didn’t deserve that! So there will be extra sympathy votes for the rap princess, who deserves this honor more than any other artist. _________ BEST POP SOLO PERFORMANCE: “Yummy,” Justin Bieber; “Say So,” Doja Cat; “Everything I Wanted,” Billie Eilish; “Don’t Start Now,” Dua Lipa; “Watermelon Sugar,” Harry Styles; “cardigan,” Taylor Swift. FEKADU: Let’s start with who won’t win here: sorry Biebs, Tay and Doja. I’m split between Billie, Dua and Harry, but I’m going with “Watermelon Sugar” for two sweet reasons: The song was irresistible and the win will make up for Harry’s snubs in the big three categories. HALL: I appreciated the subtle (go Google it) sexiness that Styles plays with on “Watermelon Sugar,” for sure. T-Swift has been nominated in this category multiple times without a win, which is a bit surprising, but I think voters are going to be drawn to the whisper queen Eilish. _________ BEST ROCK PERFORMANCE: “Shameika,” Fiona Apple; “Not,” Big Thief; “Kyoto,” Phoebe Bridgers; “The Steps,” HAIM; “Stay High,” Brittany Howard; “Daylight,” Grace Potter. HALL: I don’t want to date myself, but seeing all these female rock artist names together makes me long for the late ‘90s Lilith Fair concerts where I felt among a likeminded
community. Fiona Apple’s return after several long years was personal and unconventional, intimate and experimental, and her exploration in “Shameika” of feeling recognized, even in a small way, by another young girl just zeroed in on all my millennial feelings. FEKADU: The apple of my eye (and this award): Fiona and “Shameika.” _________ BEST R&B SONG: “Better Than I Imagined,” Robert Glasper, H.E.R. and Meshell Ndegeocello; “Black Parade,” Beyonc√©; “Collide,” Tiana Major9 and EARTHGANG; “Do It,” Chloe x Halle; “Slow Down,” Skip Marley and H.E.R. FEKADU: As a card-carrying member of the Beehive ‚Äî with platinum status ‚Äî I’m marching in Beyonc√©’s “Black Parade.” HALL: I, too, stan the Queen, but I have fallen in love with “Slow Down” featuring these two young stars. The mixture of their distinct voices and the blending reggae and R&B on a sweet love song is just beautiful. Grammy voters have already crowned H.E.R as the genre’s next big star who has been collaborating all over the place, while Marley, the grandson of reggae legend Bob Marley, has shown the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. _________ BEST RAP SONG: “The Bigger Picture,” Lil Baby; “The Box,” Roddy Ricch; “Laugh Now Cry Later,” Drake and Lil Durk; “Rockstar,” DaBaby and Roddy Ricch; “Savage,” Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonc√©. HALL: Megan and Beyonc√© will not be denied. FEKADU: I don’t want no smoke with B, but there’s another rap hit that dominated the year more than “Savage,” and that’s “The Box.” The Grammys love Roddy ‚Äî he was a newbie and won his first Grammy last year ‚Äî and “The Box” is also nominated for song of the year and “Savage” isn’t. Plus, “The Box” offers one of the best lines, especially necessary during the pandemic era: “Don’t wear no shoes in my house!” _________ BEST COUNTRY DUO/GROUP PERFORMANCE: “All Night,” Brothers Osborne; “10,000 Hours,” Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber; “Ocean,” Lady A; “Sugar Coat,” Little Big Town; “Some People Do,” Old Dominion. FEKADU: Dan + Shay have won this honor the last two years, and their Bieber-assisted track was a huge pop hit, but I don’t think “10,000 Hours” will win here. This year marks Brothers Osborne’s sixth nod in this category, but they’ll fall short to Old Dominion’s “Some People Do,” a touching tune that’s also nominated for best country song. HALL: With big hit after hit, I would bet $10,000 on Dan + Shay wining the trifecta in this category. Shay Mooney’s vocals are among the best in the genre, while Dan Smyers is a studio whiz. Welcome to Bieber country.

Malala takes her passions to the small screen with Apple
By BROOKE LEFFERTS Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) ‚Äî Malala Yousafzai is a Nobel laureate known around the world for her activism, but she’s also a cartoon fan, and is taking her love of television and film to Apple TV+. Yousafzai, 23, who graduated from Oxford last June, announced Monday that she has partnered with Apple in a multi-year deal to develop dramas, documentaries, comedies, animation and series for kids. Yousafzai was the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, in 2014, for working to protect children from slavery, extremism and child labor. In her home country, Pakistan, she was outspoken in insisting that girls have a right to an education. She was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman while riding a school bus at age 15. She recovered and went on to fight against girls’ oppression worldwide. In an interview with The Associated Press, Yousafzai talked about her love of cartoons as an escape, how she stays hopeful in a sometimes bleak world, and how she will mark Monday’s International Women’s Day. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity. AP: Your new deal with Apple includes comedy and animated shows. Are you a comedy fan? YOUSAFZAI: In my childhood, it was Cartoon Network and, you know, seeing “Tom and Jerry,” “Courage,” “Scooby Doo” and all of those TV cartoon shows. When you are a child ‚Äî and especially when terrorism started ‚Äî to know that there is sort of this world in cartoons where you can escape from the reality around you and just giggle and laugh and just entertain yourself. You know, I have been watching comedy movies from Bollywood to Hollywood, and I am a big fan of animation as well. I have not missed a single animation movie. It just keeps you engaged and entertained and also gives you very beautiful messages. AP: You’ll also be developing documentaries and maybe covering your world travels to help girls? YOUSAFZAI: I definitely want to do documentaries and non-scripted shows, and it will cover a lot ‚Äî hopefully my own journey as well ‚Äî and the incredible girls that I meet.... But there’s so much more to explore and to learn. I’m excited. You know, I’m still at the stage where I’m exploring ideas. I can tell you that there are so many incredible ideas and it’s so difficult to pick and choose one. AP: A stat on your website suggests it will take 100 years until all girls have access to education. Sometimes the news is so dark, how do you maintain hope? YOUSAFZAI: I think when you raise your voice, it can have an impact and it can bring change. What will make me pessimistic is if we don’t do anything. So as long as we keep doing our part, there is optimism, there is hope. I think it’s just the silence that keeps things going as they are. AP: How are you going to mark International Women’s Day? YOUSAFZAI: We need to just take a bit of a break and celebrate the accomplishments that women have made. And I’m not just talking about historical figures and activist women ‚Äî we need to applaud them and appreciate them. But us as individuals, who are in school, in colleges studying, or
parents who are coping with COVID and being at home and managing their kids and also doing work and managing these Zoom calls and everything. So to all the women who just coped ‚Äî especially last year, you know ‚Äî take a break and be proud of yourself. You have done an incredible job. AP: Many girls look up to you as a hero. Who are your heroes? YOUSAFZAI: I have many, many heroes, from my parents to historical figures like Benazir Bhutto, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela. But the people who have actually and truly inspired me are the young girls that I have met in my journey. Girls from Iraq to Brazil, Nigeria, Kenya. So many of these girls have incredible stories that they have seen ‚Äî wars, conflicts. They have become displaced. They have been forced into marriages at early ages. But they do not give up on their dreams and they are still fighting for the right to education, for their right to a safe future. If they are not giving up on their fight for education, then why should we? AP: How has it been in quarantine at home? YOUSAFZAI: I spent the last two months of college at home because of COVID. And I was taking my exams at home and I graduated at home and it’s all just been home,
home, home. I have two younger brothers and it’s quite difficult to manage your work while they’re in the house. They have their own sort of schedule and timetable. And I would have an important call and they would just come to my room and not appreciate that. But still, you know, they are my brothers and I love them. So we’re just coping with it and trying our best not to argue too much. AP: What is your message for young girls who want to be activists? YOUSAFZAI: My message to young girls is always, never underestimate yourself. We are often told that you have to grow older and get a PhD or something, and then once you are 50 or 40, then you can change things. Follow that path if you want, but you can change things now as well. Do not underestimate the power you have, even in the small actions that you take, whether that is raising awareness, doing fundraising for a cause you believe in, talking to somebody that doesn’t agree with you.... Talk about why women’s rights and girls’ rights are important, why climate change is important. All of these things matter.
