ELSIE M. OWENS

WORD FROM THE CEO

Dear Friends, As I look back on the previous year, I can’t help but to praise our Heavenly Father for all He has done for us. As I reminisce on our accomplishments during this first year, I know that none of these would be possible without Divine intervention. Sure, we faced obstacles and disappointments but overall, we accomplished many of our goals. It took the help and sacrifice of individuals like yourselves, donations, and when mostly needed, a word of encouragement and prayer. Our staff and volunteers received minimal compensation, if any at all. Yet, they shared the vision, devoted their time, and pitched in to help our organization fight against obesity and in turn, help reverse and prevent other diseases both in children and adults. This year, we look forward to helping more individuals and families. Healthy You, Inc. believes in true HealthCARE. We believe that Health is a Choice, it is Attainable, it can be Restored and finally, health can be achieved through Education. As we progress this year, we will share this belief with those afflicted by these preventable diseases. We will restore hope in those individuals and families that have been told that their situation is hopeless and nothing else can be done. We will continue to share and represent Christ in our dealings. As his disciples, we will continue to minister to others through health. Wishing you a healthy 2011!

CEO and Founder Healthy You, Inc.

ALEX V. HAMER

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Healthy You, Inc. was incorporated a little over a year ago. It has been my privilege to serve as the chairman of the board. God has richly blessed us with individuals who are sincere to His cause. I would like to extend a special thanks to our board members: Dr. Agatha Thrash for her Christlike demeanor and her timely advice; Mr. Ray Daniels for his legal perspective and for always giving an encouraging word; Mr. Andre Edie for stepping out in faith to follow God’s will and Mrs. Elsie Owens for her untiring drive to help the people of East Tennessee to achieve maximum health, something impossible without Christ. Our meetings have been Christ centered and we’ve heard the Holy Spirit speak to us through each devotional thought. I pray that we will continue to serve God in the capacity that he has placed us in. Please keep Healthy You, Inc. in your prayers. This year, we continue to pray and strive that we will be drawn closer to God in order to help every individual that we encounter.

FIT4LIFE

Obesity has become an epidemic and is rapidly spreading among children in the Southeast Tennessee area. Thirty four percent of children across the country are overweight. Our goal is to reach and improve the quality of life in one individual, one family, and one community, at a time. We did just that for Louise and her family. At first, she was the only one in her family participating in the Fit4Life individualized meal plan. Her husband noticed how much weight she had lost and decided to join. They implemented the principles that they had learned, in their home. “My mother started eating like us. When she went to the doctor her blood sugar levels were down; she had lost a few pounds, and had more energy. Even people at church have asked me what I’m doing.” We wanted Fit4Life to be an easy plan, made to fit individual needs. “I like the fact that I can just look at the preplanned menu. I have a list of ingredients and that makes shopping easier. I eat healthy, but it’s things that I enjoy. I stick to the menu so I don’t have to worry about getting too much calories or eating too much fat. I’ve lost 13 pounds!” Fit4Life provides follow up sessions up to a year, if the client so chooses. This past May, Fit4Life sponsored a Paid to Walk program. Wal-Mart donated gift cards to the winning participants. The program had 60 sessions and 12 participants. The average weight loss was 4 pounds. At the end of the program some participants continued walking. “I just needed a jumpstart and this helped.” This year, we hope to help more individuals and families achieve a healthy weight and work towards the goal to be Fit4Life.

T.A.S.T. E.

  11

In the year 2010, T.A.S.T.E. (Teaching All Students to Excel) program set out to reach at-risk youth who were left behind and left out of the No Child Left Behind initiative. There was a need for these students to understand their various emotions and learn how to use self control. The Forgive to Live seminar was an effective tool in helping 58 people learn how to manage their anger in a positive way. Meanwhile, a behavior management series was presented to 36 at-risk youth of the East Lake area of Chattanooga. The concept “table talk” was introduced. A young man was overheard telling his teacher that he had to go to the 2pm “table talk” to learn to control his anger. Another student said that “this is the only time I get to talk about real things happening in the world”. T.A.S.T.E. teaches that sports can be an effective venue to vent anger and release hostility. T.A.S.T.E. also provides children skills to manage negative behaviors, emotions and at the same time to be physically fit. This past year, our summer camp helped to broaden the lives of 6 inner city youths. The boys learned to use hand tools and do yard work, as well as eat two hearty meals a day without snacking, all in a country setting. One of the things they enjoyed most is learning to appreciate and care for animals such as dogs and turtles. We are in need of a building in the city of Chattanooga. This will help serve many inner city youths who are currently far behind in their academics and who need to improve their overall behavior. This year, our goal is to expand into a well rounded afterschool program which will offer academics in areas such as reading and mathematics. Our hope is that these children will become motivated and progress to become outstanding members of their community.
