ctober is a special month for me, crisp air and that all-familiar smell of fall. Nature takes her paintbrush and changes the colors in the topographical landscape into deep spectrums of browns, gold and shades of red. How do you like the cover this month? Pumpkin… Mmm, pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup and pumpkin bread. To order wonderful pumpkin breads this season, stop by or call Great Harvest Bread Company and Haven on Earth Bread & Bakery Company. You have to taste their glutenfree and specialty breads! Look for their ads in Healthy Beginnings Magazine. To keep our readers and small business owners up to speed with electronic media, Dr. Bret Simmons presents us with an article on Social Media, an interesting read on how businesses connect and engage with customers using the media sphere. This month we have two book reviews, each authored by local professionals; What If We’re Him? by Dr. Gene Pascucci and When Planets Collide by Jenifer Rose and Jim Ghiglieri. Dr. Catherine Neighbors discusses healthy relationships in her article entitled “Lighting the Way to Emotional Healing.” Did you know that President George Bush declared the 1990’s as “the decade of the brain”? Research shows that the brain continually reorganizes itself. Learn why this is clinically useful in Dr. Rutherford’s article, “Brain-Based Therapy.” Dr. Tony Jensen’s article asks the question “Heart Attack or a Jammed Rib?” Shelby Molchan looks at liver health, and Planned Parenthood submitted an article on talking to your kids about sexual intimacy, titled “Talk About Spooky.” October is Breast Awareness Month, yet as a woman I feel it important to be aware every month; read Dr. Gerber’s piece on breast health. To lift our spirits Healthy Beginnings would like to introduce a new writer, Nora Mitchell. Each month, she will give us insight into the world of Vino. Nora is a sommelier and offered an excellent article this month, explaining “The Role of Wine in Healthy Living.” “Soul House”, by Dr. Andrew Drymalski delves into our two houses, addressing analogy between the material and the dream world. Enjoy this issue and always, Best in Health and Happiness. HB

Rosemary Infused Olive Oil Written By Ffjorren Zolfaghar

As we head into the winter months, our cooking habits lead us toward warmer, heartier foods, sauces and oils. Our cover this month beautifully displays a bottle of Rosemary infused Olive Oil. As noted in our herbs and spices section, rosemary is a versatile herb, used in many types of recipes that nourish our body, inside and out. It is a heat-loving, hearty herb that is often associated with Mediterranean foods. Olive oil is also linked to the Mediterranean and is a very useful ingredient, used around the world. It is often added to food, soaps and cosmetics, among others. It is considered a “healthy” oil to cook with and has become a popular kitchen staple in the United States. Combine these luscious ingredients and you can create a delightful cooking oil, a beautiful fall décor or a gift to pass on during the holiday season. Instead of bringing a bottle of wine to a dinner party, bring a bottle of infused oil. Infuse your own oil by placing two ounces of dried rosemary, or a four ounce fresh rosemary sprig, into a sauce pan with eight ounces of extra virgin olive oil. Heat the oil and herb for fifteen minutes. Using a funnel, pour the oil and herb into a bottle of your choice. You can also use a variety of herbs and spices to create your own unique infusion. HB

When our children are “disconnected” Written By Dr. Martin P. Rutherford, D.C.

The definition of Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders: an extreme inability to communicate normally and to develop social relationships; often accompanied by behavioral challenges such as prolonged fixation on an object or group of words, or a complete inability to talk. It is considered the most complex and hardest to understand childhood disorder, yet the research is there. The autistic spectrum disorders are a complex combination of neurological imbalances and immune disorders, with a myriad of potential triggers. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is not a social or behavioral problem, although these are some of the ASD child’s most prominent “symptoms.” Neuroscience has long understood that in order for the human brain to function wholly, large areas of the brain, as well as left and right hemispheres, contin-

November 2010

uously use electrical impulses to communicate. This is essential because each hemisphere performs different functions that allow us to react to the world in which we live. More recent research, however, shows that the two sides of the brain do not mature at the same rate; the electrical impulses between the two sides get out of balance and interfere with brain communication. Proof now exists that this communication problem is responsible for myriad of behavioral, social and learning difficulties. In order for the brain to function normally, the activities of the right and left hemisphere of the brain must work in harmony, much like a concert orchestra. When a certain functional area of one side of the brain can’t stay in rhythm, it can throw the entire hemisphere off key, so that the other side of the brain tries to time it out. This can cause disharmony to such a degree that the two sides can no longer effectively share and integrate information. The brain becomes “functionally disconnected.” A child with a slow developing left brain, for example, will have different academic problems and display different behavior than a child with a slow developing right brain. He may not be able to read words or be able to stay focused on reading. A child with a right brain dysfunction may not look at you when speaking because the brain’s ability to read 5

body language on that side of the brain is out of balance. The symptoms are different. The problem is the same: Functional Disconnection Syndrome (FDS). There are dozens of other examples, but in its most simplistic explanation, this is why the autistic (and by the way, the ADHD, ADD, Aspergers syndrome, OCD, Tourette’s, and dyslexic) child does not appear “normal.” These children seem different from “normal” children because they are “different.” They are different because they “feel” different. Children with FDS don’t physically feel the same, or think the same as other children. They feel disconnected from their bodies and their senses. Some can’t feel their bodies at all or don’t have a sense of themselves in space. They feel disconnected socially and emotionally. This disconnect is played out through what you see as unusual or disturbing behavior, ranging from the impulsive actions and emotional outbursts to an inability to focus and social isolation. Children with FDS have many traits in common. They often appear clumsy, have poor muscle tone, and may have an odd habit of tilting the head to one side or the other. They may not like to be touched, or may be sensitive to certain sounds and smells. They get sick a lot because their immune systems may be out of kilter (for many reasons) and are mostly picky eaters because their Autism, Continued on Page 7.

digestive systems aren’t functioning properly. The individual behavior symptoms and learning problems that child displays, however, depend on how the imbalance in the brain is manifesting.

Thanks to the current understandings of the concept of “neuro-plasticity,” we know that the brain has the ability to both physically and chemically change through properly directed activation to the weakened areas and to dietary and natural supplementation measures. When proper stimulation is applied and the “fuel” supply to the weakened brain areas is normalized, brain scans have shown that the weak side of the brain will actually get larger and “fire” faster. The brain begins functioning as a whole again and “symptoms” improve or resolve. The disconnected child becomes connected.

In reference to the immune and digestive symptoms, the brain is the controller of the immune response it is not the other way around. The immune system is a great example of how the two hemispheres of the brain work together as a whole. As with most bodily operations, the immune system resides in both sides of the brain but each hemisphere has a distinct job. The left immune center is like the National Guard. It activates antibodies when illness threatens. The right side suppresses the immune system to prevent it from becoming overactive; it makes sure the National Guard keeps the peace without starting a war. However when the immune system does wage war, it sometimes attacks itself. Havoc erupts in the form of autoimmune diseases like food allergies, asthma, celiac, Hashimoto’s, type I diabetes and more.

This is what brain rehab protocols are all about. They are drug-free and revolutionary. Until now, disorders associated with the characteristics that result from brain imbalance have been considered lifelong problems without a “cure” or correction. This simply is not the case. The imbalance can be improved and in many cases fixed. The weak area of the brain, through proper evaluation and correction of the neurological and metabolic immune imbalances, can be greatly improved or fixed. The weak areas of the brain can be taught to catch up to the stronger areas of the brain, reconnect, and get back to a normal rhythm. Suddenly the different child isn’t so different anymore. HB

Many ASD children with left brain deficits have extremely weakened immune responses, get sick a lot, and suffer from chronic infections. They get a lot of ear infections and it is not unusual for them to have 15 to 20 rounds of antibiotics by the time they’re eight or nine years old. Others (right brain deficits) seem to have overactive systems that lead to autoimmune problems like eczema, asthma and allergies. Often, though, these responses are more subtle and show up as a chronic inflammation or food sensitivity rather than food “allergies.” In fact many consider autism an autoimmune disorder that leads to chronic lifelong inflammation, not only of the body but of the brain as well.

Only it is and it is not. These immune symptoms turn on unexpressed genes in the genetic unexpressed phenotypic DNA. This becomes a condition that requires lifelong dietary management and it is the major reason the brain cannot reregulate itself. The immune symptoms are not the cause of the neurological disorder, they perpetuate it. They are a part of the greater problem; both neurological and immune system components must be addressed for improvement and successful management of the ASD child. November 2010

BOOSTING YOUR IMMUNEWritten SYSTEM By Dr. Tony Jensen It’s that time of the year, when your immune system is kicking into over drive. Some of the negative effects to our immune system are: changes in the weather, daily stress, what you eat, and how well your nervous system functions. All affect the performance of your immune system. Our immune system protects us against bacteria, viruses, and other disease-causing organisms. It is an efficient, complex defense system. The immune system is basically an interaction between cells and cellular products. The white blood cells (leukocytes), which are the main fighter cells of the immune system, are made up of three classes: lymphocytes, monocytes and granulocytes. Each type of cell has its own functions. There are different factors to look at. Stress can affect you in many ways. People often notice the emotional effects of stress, but aren’t always aware of the physical impact of stress. Inhibiting our emotions could be another stress factor that negatively affects our health. Bottling up negative emotions seems to tie up resources of the immune system. There is considerable evidence that talking about problems and using mental health services, decreases the number of sick days. The next important factor: nutrition and the role it plays. Immune system maintenance requires a steady intake of all the necessary vitamins and minerals. This can be accomplished by eating a well-balanced diet, including plenty of fruit and vegetables and yogurt products, on a regular basis. Diets that are high in fat seem to depress the immune response and thus increase the risk of infec-

tions. Reducing fat content in the diet can increase immune activity. To date, most studies show that supplements do not stimulate immune response in healthy, well-nourished individuals. Last but not least, the nervous system also plays a key role in the health of your immune system. A study showing the positive effect chiropractic care can have on the immune system and general health was performed by Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute and professor of medicine at New York University. Dr. Pero measured the immune systems of people under chiropractic care as compared to those in the general population, and those with cancer and other serious diseases. In his initial three-year study of 107 individuals, who had been under chiropractic care for five years or more, the chiropractic patients were found to have 200 percent greater immune competence than people who had not received chiropractic care, and 400 percent greater immune competence than people with cancer and other serious diseases. The immune system superiority of those under chiropractic care did not diminish with age. So, make sure to keep your nervous system working in its most optimal function.

Waiting for symptoms to set in, is like not changing your oil in your car until there is noise in the engine. This type of thinking leads us to poor health and disease. Anxiety and Panic Attacks My anxiety started many years ago very mildly and very seldom.

At that time I would get a little dizzy and my heart would race, not really understanding what it was. When I went to the doctor(s), I informed them about what I was experiencing, so they put me on Xanax. I was taking Xanax for quite a few years, before I would go out in public and sometimes before bed. It was actually helping me a lot; I didn’t experience any major anxiety for a long time. Unfortunately, there came a time in my life that I stopped taking the Xanax and stopped caring about myself. I just gave up on everything and anything that I ever cared about. When times got really bad, I experienced some things that turned my anxiety into full blown panic attacks. Experiencing a panic attack for the first time was one of the scariest things I have ever experienced. You do not even feel it coming on and all of a sudden you feel like you are going to die. The dizziness, the blurred vision, the rapid heart beat and the hyperventilation were all signs that I was about ready to faint. After I started having these panic attacks, I finally made it back to the doctor. That is when they put me back on drugs. The drugs worked, but they weren’t good for me. Xanax is highly addictive, and with my addictive personality I had to choose another route.

About 11 months ago, I started taking 2 L-Tryptophan Complete before I went to bed and weaned myself off of my prescribed meds. Immediately my mind stopped racing and I could fall asleep right away. My night terrors were limited and I could finally sleep without waking up in fear.

I was more relaxed. It is truly a great feeling to know that I have a solution for my anxiety when it creeps up on me. Drugs are not an option for me today. Although L-Tryptophan first became available over forty years ago, researchers now are focusing on the fact that both genetic and dietary deficiencies can block our proper metabolism of nutrients, including L-Tryptophan. Just as explorers map trails through the wilderness, medical researchers map the biochemical pathways that amino acids follow while doing their job in your body. There are many pathways in L-Tryptophan metabolism, and each one of these pathways is composed of steps. Each step, in turn, is controlled by a specific, cellular enzyme. These enzymes are the product of your individual genetic expression and can vary greatly from one person to another. Unlike digestive enzymes, though, you cannot take cellular enzymes in a capsule. Furthermore, cellular enzymes cannot work alone. Enzymes are as useless as a car without wheels if they lack critical coenzymes (vitamins – B6) and cofactors (minerals) that make them run. The concept is simple: to ensure that L-Tryptophan produces and sustains serotonin, our job has been to identify these coenzymes and cofactors and logically combine them in L-Tryptophan Complete. This careful combining of the right tools for the right job ensures that your cellular enzymes work, and you receive all the benefits of L-Tryptophan that Nature intended. L-Tryptophan Complete was first inspired about eight years ago by the fact that many peoples around the Earth are so poorly nourished they fail to get proper benefit from the food or supplements that they do receive. Donations of products to starving nations can be wasted for lack of a single nutrient. Even in prosperous countries, genetic deficiencies, unwise diets, and environmental factors can block the enzymes that metabolize essential nutrients. If you have ever wondered why a supplement did not work, this may be why. The Serotonin / L-Tryptophan Link

still pretty bad day, and I didn’t L-Trypto- phan I figured it would I wouldn’t be able

L-Tryptophan is the essential nutrient from which serotonin is made. L-Tryptophan is not a drug and works by feeding the biochemical pathways that keep you alive. In contrast to man-made chemicals, L-Tryptophan occurs naturally in your diet, and your body was born with the ability to process L-Tryptophan without side effects.

Finally, after many weeks of my heart racing and constantly coughing, I decided to try taking 1 L-Tryptophan Complete. About 10 minutes after taking it, my coughing was gone and my heart rate slowed down. I was slightly tired, but it was no where near what a drug made me feel like, and I seemed to actually focus better, since

Dozens of research papers emphatically prove that supplemental L-Tryptophan increases serotonin levels in the brain. Less wellknown, though, is the fact that only a small percentage of ingested L-Tryptophan goes down your brain serotonin pathway. Increasing that percentage even a small amount can provide a dramatic boost to your brain serotonin levels. A simple boost in serotonin has helped many experience restful sleep and brighter, happier moods than they have enjoyed in years. (For those who are interested in

digging deeper and wanting the scientific perspective of what happens inside your cells go to In short, the proper combination of cofactors and coenzymes drives the conversion of L-Tryptophan to serotonin. Nevertheless, we have found that we can do better. Very recent research shows that curcumin, the same curcumin that reduces the risk of cancer in experimental animals, also helps slow the breakdown of serotonin into inactive metabolites. Curcumin in L-Tryptophan Complete, then, helps to maintain and protect the serotonin generated by all the other ingredients.

Because L-Tryptophan is essential, no other amino acid, vitamin, mineral, herb or man-made chemical can take the place of L-Tryptophan. L-Tryptophan is routinely added to baby food and hospital IV solutions, where it is essential for growth and life. Rosemary Written By Allison Prater

A dense, aromatic shrub; with its resinous, needlelike leaves, is a wonderful herb with many uses. Culinary, medicinal and cosmetic, rosemary has a multitude of benefits for any household. Rosemary has traditionally been associated with memory. In ancient Greece, students would wear rosemary garlands around their heads as they studied, because they believed it enhanced their ability to remember. To this day, essential oil of rosemary is used for clarity of mind and concentration. Rosemary is a symbol of remembrance, friendship and love. At one time, it was a popular addition to bridal bouquets and floral garlands at weddings. At funerals, sprigs of rosemary were tossed into the grave to signify that the loved one would not be forgotten. In the kitchen, rosemary is a delicious addition to breads, meat, fish and pasta dishes. It enhances tomatoes, spinach, peas, potatoes, mushrooms, squash, cheese, eggs and lentils. It also compliments fellow herbs chives, thyme, chervil, parsley and bay in recipes. It is a surprisingly sweet addition to fruit salad, jellies and honey. Medicinally, this herb has many beneficial properties. The plant’s volatile oil has some antibacterial effects. It has astringent, tonic and expectorant properties. Applied externally, an ointment made for the oil is said to be helpful for sufferers of rheumatism, sores, eczema, bruises and wounds. Soaking in a hot herbal bath with Rosemary is said to increase circulation and invigorate a tired body. Internally, Rosemary oil is best used with care, as too much can be irritating to the stomach and intestines. As a dry seasoning, the herb is perfectly safe to use in cooking. Rosemary is often used in hair products, soaps and other cosmetics. A simple herbal hair rinse that combines Rosemary and Sage can be found at the end of this article. It is a great way to add shine and volume, and is especially recommended for brunettes.

Below are a few recipes for enjoying the invigorating properties of Rosemary, perfectly warming as the cool season returns. HB Rosemary Hair Rinse: Combine a large sprig of rosemary with 3 or 4 sage leaves in 1 cup of boiling water. Cover and let sit for up to 30 minutes. A study of Movement and Organization, not just a funny word. Written by Kim McIntire What is Rolfing®? Rolfing is a scientifically validated system of bodywork named after Dr. Ida P. Rolf. Dr. Rolf received her doctorate in biochemistry in 1920. Because of her and her sons’ health problems, she became interested in how to heal the body through her studies of homeopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic and yoga. Dr. Rolf named her work structural integration and Rolfing was the nickname given to it by her students. Rolfing is a means for “reestablishing the natural alignment and structural integration of the human body for vitality and well being.” This is accomplished through manipulation of the soft tissues of the body called fascia. Is has been said that Rolfing is painful, but over the years Rolfers continue to develop techniques that make the work more effective and without pain.

order to achieve balance. Rolf practitioners are not just looking to make changes but they are also educators. Education of the client is important so the changes can be felt when they happen and the client can embrace those changes, take them home, and put them to work. A rolfing session does not end when a client walks out the door. Dr. Ida P. Rolf believed that “This is the gospel of Rolfing: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through it. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.” Who needs Rolfing? People in chronic pain, emotional turmoil, athletes, dancers, yogis, your everyday joe, even children need Rolfing because everyone has some degree of compensation and disorder in their body. When you are looking for a change or are tired of the pain, find a Rolfer. HB References: 1. Rolf, Ida P. What is Fascia? Fascia is the tissue that supports, binds and connects the tip of our toes to the top of your head. You could compare fascia to a body stocking which is continuous throughout the body. Fascia separates muscles, nerves, organs, bones; even the brain and spinal cord are surrounded by fascia. Through pressure, movement and heat, Dr. Rolf discovered that the fascia could be manipulated and reshaped to allow the bony structures of the body (not limited to the spine but anywhere one bone connects with another) to align without force.

Isn’t Rolfing just a deep tissue massage? No, no, no. Although a massage and Rolfing may look alike at times from the outside, they are in no way related. The purpose of a massage is to help in the removal of toxins from the body, increase circulation and relaxation, and reduce stress. Rolfing is a holistic approach that brings the body into its natural upright alignment while receiving the same benefits of a massage. Throughout our lives we suffer falls, injuries, sickness, surgery, even repetitive motions on a daily basis which cause misalignments and restrictions in the body. Even the changes that a woman goes through during pregnancy can cause pain and stress in the body. Natural Cleaning Tips: Vinegar as a disinfectant? Submitted By WOW Cleaning Services According to a Good Housekeeping Institute study, as reported on 48 hours (on CBS) in 2000, “A straight 5% solution of vinegar kills 99 percent of bacteria, 82 percent of mold and 80 percent of viruses.” Eliminate Unpleasant Odors: 1. To stop unpleasant cooking odors from permeating throughout the entire house, boil a cup or two of vinegar in a pot in the stove. The vinegar will absorb the odors. 2. When cooking cabbage, add a few drops of vinegar to prevent the unpleasant odors in the first place. Clean, Sparkly Bathrooms:

I was nervous when I first walked into Dr. Kwong’s office with a broken tooth. Dr. Kwong was new in his own dental office and I didn’t have a dentist to call my own. I was immediately put at ease by the friendly staff. I was very pleased with the professional manner in which Dr. Kwong took care of my dental problem. He was gentle and explained each step of the procedure. This was appreciated, as I am one of those patients who take nothing to ease the pain. When the permanent crown was put in place, I knew I would tell other people about Dr. Kwong. I left the office happy and now have a nice Dr. Kwong smile. – Maylou Smith

Look as Young as You Feel: Optimizing Your Skin Health Written by Rebecca Gelber, MD You are eating healthy, exercising and feeling great, but the age of the face in your mirror is closer to what’s on your driver’s license than the way you feel. Don’t give up! Microdermabrasion, peels and anti-oxidants such as vitamin C and Retin-A can help increase cellular turnover – reducing pores, wrinkles, acne and sun damage so your skin not only looks healthier – it is healthier. Although Reno/Tahoe is a spectacular place to live, the high desert environment presents unique challenges to your skin. With 315 days of cloud-free skies each year, our skin takes a beating from the sun. Our air is drier, with lower oxygen content than found at sea level. This strips your skin of moisture and circulation. So, what can you do? Drink lots of water. Living an active life at altitude requires more water than most of us consume. Wear sunscreen. Most dermatologists recommend an SPF of at least 30. Reapply often if you’re out and active. If you’re worried about vitamin D, protect your face and neck while letting sun shine on your back and legs during hours when the sun is less intense. Exfoliate your skin. Your skin builds up a surface layer of dead cells called the stratum corneum. A thin layer protects your living skin, but when thickened, it chokes the layers beneath - plugging pores, making your skin look dull, and adding depth to wrinkles and scars. As you remove this, you stimulate healthy turnover of vital lower layers. Polishes and scrubs buff away upper skin layers. Focus use on thicker cheek, chin and forehead skin, sparing the delicate eye area. Microdermabrasion offers more controlled exfoliation, with a physician or aesthetician using fine crystals and suction to achieve the ideal treatment depth for each area. This can yield an amazing improvement in texture and tone with immediate results, perfect for right before that holiday event. Chemical peels are considered the “gold standard” in treating skin aging. Naturally-derived acids remove dead cells and stimulate the layers beneath, minimizing hyperpigmentation, fine lines and sagging tone. Peels can be gentle, resulting in a healthy glow with no actual peeling, or you can plan with your doctor for a deeper treatment. Antioxidants are hot in skin care, and that’s because they work. Applied directly to the skin in concentrated serums, vitamin C decreases free radical damage, protecting the skin from oxidant stressors of modern life. It is also essential to collagen production. Tretinoins, popularly branded as Retin-A, are vitamin A derivatives and one of the most potent treatments available to increase cell turnover, decrease wrinkles, and improve acne and rosacea. They also increase cellular protein production of collagen and elastin, and may increase telomere length, decreasing DNA aging. Tretinoins are only available by prescription, but are a valuable tool in your arsenal against skin damage. Whatever your age or skin condition, there are treatments available to improve the current heath of your skin and minimize future damage. A few changes to your routine and your skin can look younger and healthier, just in time for holiday parties. HB References: 1. Stern RS. Treatment of photoaging. Is It What You Eat, Or How You Eat It? Written By Shelby Molchan

our body is considered by some to be a food processing center. Its main design is to process the food you eat into digestible matter that can then be converted into energy to run the body. Proper food combining can have a profound impact upon the body’s ability to absorb nutrients and process fiber. Carbohydrates pass through the stomach shortly after ingestion and require about half of the time proteins require for gastric processing. Acid substances do not mix with alkaline substances and directly affect the digestive tract when improperly combined. Chemically speaking, sugars, starches and grains are alkaline substances. The digestive medium of the stomach needs to be alkalized for complete processing. Proteins are acidic and require their own special digestive juices. When a carbohydrate, a potato for example, is eaten with a protein, a steak, the digestive balance of the body is thrown off and the carbohydrate is processed while the undigested protein is often left to decay in the colon. Some examples of proper food combinations are as follows: Carbohydrates should be combined with non-starchy and mildly starchy vegetables, fats and oils. Proteins should be combined with non-starchy and mildly starchy vegetables, but not carbohydrates. Fats and oils should be combined with non-starchy vegetables and carbohydrates, but not proteins. It is generally considered that fruit should be eaten away from other foods and that melon should always be eaten alone. There are many books and related topics on the internet and the opinion of which combinations are best can vary. Consulting a food combination chart can be an easy way of beginning to familiarize

November 2010

yourself with the changes you will need to make in your own diet in order to implement proper food combining. Symptoms of improper food combining can include constipation, indigestion, gas, bloating after eating, a feeling that one has swallowed a brick and fatigue or tiredness after eating. When people begin to properly combine food, the digestive tract can react to the rebalancing process by at first enhancing some of the original complaints. This is part of the detoxification process of the body. Using colon hydrotherapy to cleanse the bowel of accumulated toxins can help facilitate the process. Relieving impactions and accumulated candida can stimulate the bowel and improve digestion.

SexEd 401K

common misconception in our society is that older people are not sexual beings. Why do we tend to have negative views about sexuality later in life? Much of this sex-negative attitude can be attributed to our own fears of mortality; growing old, sickness, vulnerability and dying. Additionally, the media tends to link love, sex and romance to the young, insinuating that one’s sexuality is over in the later adult years. These notions gave rise to a prejudice called ageism, which is the stereotyping of and discrimination against individuals or groups because of their age. As an older man or woman, you may experience ageism on a day to day basis regarding your sexuality. Wrinkles and gray hair equates to a sexless life, as deemed by society’s sexual standards today. On the contrary, research shows that sexual interest and activity continues as a natural part of aging. A nationally representative survey of men and women age 60 and older found that about half are sexually active. This age group is larger than one many think; 75.8 million of them were born between the years of 1946 and 1964, known as the baby boomer generation. They are now (in 2010) between the ages of 46 and 64 and represent 28% of our population. If you believe you will someday be fifty, sixty or eighty, start with educating yourself about the changes you can expect: physical, psychological and social. The common sexual concerns at midlife include negative body image, communication skills, safe sex, discussing sexual issues with a physician, sex toys, widowhood, new relationships, internet dating, disability and chronic illness. Most of us will need to re-evaluate and be re-educated on how sexuality fits into our current realities. Ideally, sexual re-education should start when we are in our forties, before erectile issues cause men to panic and before women internalize menopausal myths and negative body image. Reading books and articles on sexuality and aging is helpful, as well as exploring the resources available in your area. If possible, take a workshop, one that validates and educates you about your sexuality. Sex can be positive and beautiful in mid and later life, but you need to be wiser and smarter! HB

LIVE LOCAL Written By Dave Asher

The average American spends $800 – $900 on Christmas gifts, according to the American Consumer Credit Council. Other common holiday expenses include entertaining at home, dining out and hosting company parties. LiveLocal RenoSparks, a new Nevada nonprofit, is launching “KEEP YOUR MONEY HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS,” a campaign to educate consumers on the benefits of spending holiday dollars at locally owned businesses. According to several national studies, for every $100 spent at an independent business, $68 returns to the local community compared to $43 at a national chain store/restaurant. Locally owned businesses reinvest in the local economy at a 60 percent higher rate than chains, and profits generally circulate two to four times in the local economy versus leaving the state as corporate profits and franchise fees. Consumers have the opportunity to help create a vibrant local economy by purchasing holiday gifts/gift cards and groceries from independent local merchants, and planning holiday meals and parties at locally owned restaurants, cafes, wine bars, casinos, etc. To identify locally owned businesses, visit when making purchase decisions, and “choose local first” whenever possible. Work on shopping at locally owned franchises first, at a chain store as a secondary choice, and shop online as a last resort. Out of state online purchases are the worst options for the local economy, as they create no local jobs or sales tax revenue. LiveLocal RenoSparks is one of the first in the country to build a free online directory of all locally owned businesses, and the current database includes 2,800 businesses. Local business owners can check the search engine for their free listing, and enter their company information if not already included. The website listing includes a business name, location, phone number, link to business website and search map to location. To help support this program, LiveLocal RenoSparks is building a Co-Op to offer local business owners marketing support, networking opportunities and the latest internet tools designed to help locally owned businesses succeed. Keep Your Money Home for the Holidays begins the momentum for the “SHIFT 10% in 2011” campaign that encourages citizens to support the community by supporting locally owned businesses. Shifting just 10 percent of spending in RenoSparks from non-locally owned to locally owned businesses can result in over $350 million dollars staying in the local economy, annually. It’s not about politics. It’s about this community, and funding for schools, fire/police departments, roads, parks, libraries and all the things that make Reno/Sparks a great place to live. Shui EAR CANDLING Feng Facts & Fiction Written By Rebecca Moore Form is one of the most powerful methods of feng shui and the least understood. Outside Form considers the entire surrounding environment, whether natural or man-made, while analyzing size, shape and distance. Indoor Form refers to furniture placement.

Written By Karen Tenaglio

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB

In ancient times, Form was a study of mountains and water. Texts were written classifying the multitude of scenarios and the influence on people. Ancient cities were designed using this knowledge. Today, Form includes buildings and streets and how they affect the environment. One structure can influence an entire city. The Form around a state capital can influence the entire state. The Form around a country’s capital can influence the entire country. For homes, the wrong Form can influence personality changes, health problems, affairs, weight gain, arguments, divorce, sleeping problems and misbehaving children. For businesses, it can influence money loss, poor decisions, high turnover, management difficulties, communication problems and problems with staff and clients. Some of America’s early immigrants who achieved fame, notoriety and great wealth, chose home sites with perfect land form to allow for immense wealth. Was it coincidence? Autumn Sports

One of my favorite hobbies is soccer! I love soccer; it is by far my favorite sport that I play. I love running and kicking the ball, with the wind in my face and sweat dripping down my forehead. I love playing games, and when I get mad I play my best! When I am playing a game I have so much fun, that I loose track of time and it feels like we were only playing for about fifteen minutes. I wish the games could go on forever, but they only go on for about an hour. My position in soccer is the spot right in front of the goalie box, the position is called “sweeper.” So, if the ball gets past the other defense, my job is to kick it back up to the forwards or half-backs. I am the last line of defense, which is a big job for one person. I play this position because I have a big foot, that means when the ball comes my way I can kick it back up to the goal area on the other side of the field! That’s why my coach always puts me on defense, because no ball can pass me! One of my other favorite things about soccer is running, I love running and my position does a lot of it! When I am running it feels like the whole world has stopped and it’s just me and the ball, and my goal is to kick it back up to the forwards people so that my team can score. I play on a league where I live; I have a coach and an assistant coach that helps with coaching and demonstrations. Usually, the coaches have played soccer before or coached a soccer team; so, they know what their doing. They teach us new skills, like passing, kicking, dribbling and doing tick moves. We also work on “throw in’s,’ corner kicks and goal kicks, hand ball kicks and or penalty kicks. These are life-long soccer skills that are going to be needed if a person decides to take soccer through high school, college or a career. Another thing that I love about soccer: teammates. Your teammates are your family, you watch out for each other and care for them on the field, but they are also your friends, your team. You need to trust you team, because soccer is not a one man’s sport, you need a team. I love my team, they are my friends and my teammates, and we laugh and have lots of fun at practices. But they are also people I can trust. My team this year is called “storm” and our team color is purple. We have only won one game, but we lose with pride and know we tried 100 percent, the whole game! Again, that’s what teammates do; win or lose, we are teammate. If we lose, that just means we need to try harder next time, and it gives us more reason to win. I love soccer! HB

I love soccer! Written By Ariana Purcell

November 2010

Last year more than 28,000 people died from the

foods. Many people preserve foods at home using lactic fermentation. For example, cabbage carries the bacteria necessary for lactic fermentation on its leaves. To make sauerkraut, simply place cabbage covered with salt water into a jar for a few days at room temperature.

pathogenic bacteria Clostridium Difficile (C. Diff.), the majority of which succumbed after using antibiotics to treat other infections. In some regions of the United States, C. Diff. now supersedes MRSA (Staphylococcus aureus) as the most common infection people acquire during hospitalization. Antibiotics destroy bacteria indiscriminately, eliminating both the targeted bacteria and beneficial bacteria that colonize the digestive tract, leaving it vulnerable to infection by C. Diff.

As recognition of the importance of beneficial bacteria grows, so does the availability of commercial foods containing them. When searching for lacto-fermented food at the store, look for labels that list bacteria such as acidophilus, bifidus and bulgaricus. Foods containing beneficial bacteria may also be labeled “Probiotic” or “Contains Live Active Cultures.”

The human child enters the world a sterile creature. She acquires bacteria as she leaves her mother’s body and consumes food from her mother’s breast. As the beneficial bacteria travel through her digestive tract, they colonize the walls of her gut. Once the beneficial bacteria establish a community, they help nourish her by making essential vitamins and breaking down food particles. They also reduce inflammation and protect her from infection by pathogenic bacteria by stimulating an immune response. In exchange, beneficial bacteria receive a moist, warm home where they can flourish. These bacteria eventually comprise as much as 90 percent of the cells within a person’s body.

People also build their beneficial bacteria with a probiotic supplement taken orally, or as a colonic implant. Oral supplements are now widely available and vary by the strains of bacteria contained, ingredients, and their sensitivity to heat. A colon hydrotherapist can also directly implant beneficial bacteria through probiotics after a cleansing of the bowel. This increases the potential for the beneficial bacteria to contact the walls of the colon, where they can establish colonies.

Unfortunately, antibiotics disturb this mutually beneficial relationship. Physicians prescribe antibiotics to treat a litany of infections, including C. Diff. When a patient takes antibiotics to treat C. Diff. they continue a vicious cycle of destroying beneficial bacteria, which leaves them even more vulnerable to infection, resulting in a high rate of recurrence of the C. Diff. infection, when they use antibiotics as their treatment. In one recent case, a woman suffered for eight months with C. Diff., losing more than 60 pounds. After treating her with multiple rounds of antibiotics, her physician proposed an alternate approach, a bacterial transplant from her husband’s gut. She chose this option, and it worked. His beneficial bacteria flourished within her body, and the C. Diff. disappeared. Many people choose to support a community of beneficial bacteria within their bodies by eating lactofermented foods. These foods, a wonderful source of beneficial bacteria, have historically offered an important option for food storage as the process produces an acidic environment that preserves food and is conducive to probiotic growth. Beginner’s guide to cold season vegetable gardening “Seeds of Change,” at, has a great variety of winter garden materials, and there are many Do It Yourself websites and books that have excellent instructions for building your own cold frames, or hoop houses. Many projects can be accomplished with re-purposed materials.

Written By Allison Prater Just because the frost is rolling in, does not mean that your home grown vegetable production need come to an end. With a little bit of crop protection, you can grow a number of tasty garden delights through much of the cold season. Here is a rough guide of ideas for fall and early winter gardens. Choose winter hardy crops, here is a basic list of plants to start in the fall:

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Carrots Radish Lettuce Mustard Greens Arugula Swiss Chard Kale Turnips Kohlrabi Spinach Sorrel Onions Garlic Leeks Parsnips Chinese Cabbage, such as Bok Choy Sunchokes Brussle Sprouts Parsley Peas, (which will sprout in the earliest of early spring).

Greenhouses are a slightly more intensive method for year round gardening. With a little planning ahead, greenhouses can make it possible to extend the growing season for warm season crops such as tomatoes and peppers. This works especially well if these plants are grown in containers so they can be easily transported to the greenhouse before the first frost. Indoor kitchen gardens are wonderful in the cold months. Small pots of culinary herbs such as rosemary, sage and basil can be grown on the windowsill. Sprouting is a simple way to grow healthy food in a timely manner. Some sprouts only take a few days and can be grown in mason jars without any soil at all. Others need a week or two and are grown in pots or flat pallets of soil. Both methods are easy, quick and cost effective, with the added pleasure of being surrounded by green and growing things in the midst of winter weather. If you are feeling adventurous, you can try indoor mushroom cultivation. Basements and closets usually provide ideal living conditions for your fungi friends. Grow- your- own mushroom kits can be found at

You need to start by covering your crops with two layers of plastic and enough room for the plants to stretch out and grow. Hoop houses work well, which are tunnels covered in plastic. They are fairly simple to build, or assemble from pre-packaged kits. Mulch from straw, hay, leaves or newspaper can help to keep root veggies warm, making it possible for them to be uncovered. Some root vegetables, such as parsnips, are especially hardy in the cold, and are said to be sweeter when left in the ground through a good frost. Most greens need cover once temperatures really begin to drop. Cold frame boxes are made with untreated wood, with a glass top, and can be propped open to allow ventilation to the plants inside. They are great for keeping greens cozy and flourishing all winter long. Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

Covering the plants in clear plastic or glass keeps them insulated from the harsh wind and moisture changes of winter, while still giving them access to much needed sunlight. It is best to uncover plants for watering, harvesting or care only during the middle of the day, when it tends to be the warmest.

The cold season is also a great time to research and plan for next year’s garden. Before you know it, planting for next spring’s garden will be here. So enjoy your fresh greens from the garden as you pour over your seed catalogue, and watch for signs that your spring peas have sprouted. HB References: 1. Emery, Carla. Flight of the Spirit Written By Robert Roy

ediscovering ancient philosophies and wisdom brings into focus the universal truths ignored today by most of modern science. These truths are simple, yet represent experience and knowledge acquired since the dawn of mankind, when we found the healing remedies we needed in the diverse vegetation mother earth had provided for us. The cultures and traditions of the fifty seven countries I have visited in my travels gave me a unique opportunity to re-awaken this special sight or sense; which is lost to the majority of Westerners who have lost the ability to experience simple truths.

It began with my introduction to oriental philosophy and thought, over thirty five years ago. At the same time, I was introduced to the proper way of eating, and learned the universal laws of macrobiotic diet, the balancing of body, mind, and spirit, as well as the means to strengthen our physical beings. These discoveries in my travels opened a door to my consciousness as I explored different forms of healing. My interest grew, and I began to participate in the natural healing process I saw going on around me. I returned to America fascinated with all aspects of natural healing, and became engrossed in the successful work Royal Raymond Rife undertook early in this century with his famous Rife Generator. For many years I did research with several young scientists to evolve a working model of the generator that gave us much satisfaction. This, I thought, was an ultimate simple truth. Yet there is always more. Right in my own back yard, so to speak, I met a Native American elder who introduced me to a complex herbal formula held secret by his family for over a hundred years and shared only with members of their family and tribe. At times, profiteers tried to recreate the formula on their own, succeeding only partially. Although these partial formulas enjoyed limited success, they could not come close to the healing capabilities of the original formula. For a long period of time the original formula was kept from public view because of the respect and sacredness with which the elder and his family held this formula. The elder told me that the formula had been used for a whole host of imbalances of the body: malignancies, tumors, open sores, food poisoning, liver problems, skin infections, colds, flu, as well as wart and mole removal. He recounted his own experience since 1977, when his father passed on to him the secret of the formula. Since then, he witnessed the formula heal Candida albicans, chronic fatigue syndrome, skin malignancies, lupus internal growths, all virus in origin and much more. When taken internally, he stated, the formula is attracted to wherever an imbalance is situated in the system. It begins the healing work immediately, while strengthening the body and aiding its ability to overcome the disease. As an enema, it is a great colon and intestinal cleanser and detoxifier, saturating the lower organs like a beneficial balm. Taken as a douche, its cleansing ability is immediate and thorough. The elder also told me of a lady in his tribe with a cervical disease. He suggested that she douche with the compound every other day and take it orally; the regimen healed her completely. No ancient healing method I have ever encountered could boast of so many uses on the human body. I had found not only a simple truth, but a golden one. Some of us who hear of or experience such a gift of nature in this day and age are happy that the compound may now openly take its place among the many incredible healing gifts of nature. One can only feel sad for the great number who will never share in these treasures and will instead remain mired in modern therapies that do not work and serve only in the degeneration of their spirit. If I could leave you with one thought, it would be this: Keep an open mind when making health-related decisions. Be still, go within, for some people have greater intellects, but all of us have the same portion of universal wisdom, if we just open the door. Whose Fault Is It Anyway? [

Dear Forgive Coach:

reason for all of this, then maybe I’d stop feeling this way and I could get on with a happy life! It seems so unfair, and I just want to figure it out and escape the miserable situation I am in. I am an artist, and my husband and I have worked together for over five years, creating art for various organizations and foundations. We are just beginning to get known and sought after, and I just found out that he has had a girlfriend for a couple of YEARS and wants to leave me but wants me to continue being his business partner since our work together is so integrated with each other’s talents! I hate him and want to say no, but I also love him and I want him to see how much he needs me so I can win him back. Why could this be happening, why would he cheat on me and ruin what we have? – CK

Dear CK:

see the dilemma you find yourself in and I can feel how uncomfortable you are, so the last thing I want to say is that everything happens for a reason; but I’m sure you know that is what I am about to say! The reason is not black and white and it also isn’t meant to be a punishment. There is no way that your loving spiritual guidance system wants you to feel punished. Sometimes, however, it is important to feel pain so that you will wake up to the truth of who you really are. Once you do this, then you see that in terms of Radical Forgiveness there is nothing to forgive because the truth has actually set you free! It just so happens that at this point of the process you do not feel free, you feel trapped. First, I suggest you take a quick scan of past relationships to identify that you have been let down before. You most likely always put all you have into a relationship, including finances and hard work, expecting that you will once and for all “be enough” and then be loved. This time, you really have gone all out. Your hard work has made you a valuable

piece to a successful business, and it still isn’t enough! He wants you for that, but not as a partner. How much more painful could it be? It is now time for you to see the value and the beauty of who you really are. You are enough and your priority right now is to see that. Your husband brought you a lesson you can no longer ignore. Your marriage might survive, but for now focus on yourself. Figure out why you don’t put yourself first. Practice some self forgiveness. You can be a successful artist on your own if it comes to that. Find your strength, live it and then see who shows up to share your beauty with you. No one can truly see you as beautiful and talented until you do! HB Blessings,

INGREDIENTWATCH Perchloroethylene (PERC) is the most commonly used dry-cleaning solvent. P.E.R.C. can enter the body through respiratory and dermal (skin) exposure. Symptoms associated with exposure include: depression of the central nervous system, damage to the liver and kidneys, impaired memory, confusion, dizziness, headache, drowsiness and eye, nose and throat irritation. Repeated dermal exposure may result in dermatitis. The National Institute Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers PERC a potential human carcinogen. Tetrachloroethylene, also known under its chemical name tetrachloroethene and many other names, is a colorless liquid widely used for the dry cleaning of fabrics, sometimes referred to by its more popular name of “dry-cleaning fluid.” It has a sweet odor that detectable by most people at a concentration of 1 part per million. Tetrachloroethylene is an excellent solvent for organic materials. Otherwise it is volatile, highly stable and nonflammable. For these reasons, it is widely used in dry cleaning and is more commonly known as PERC. It appears in a few consumer products including paint strippers and spot removers. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified tetrachloroethene as a Group 2A carcinogen, which means that it is probably carcinogenic to humans. Like many similar chlorinated hydrocarbons, tetrachloroethene is a central nervous system depressant and can enter the body through respiratory or dermal (skin) exposure. Tetrachloroethene dissolves fats from the skin potentially resulting in skin irritation. Various animal studies, plus a study of 99 twins by Dr. Samuel Goldman and researchers at the Parkinson’s Institute in Sunnyvale, California determined there is a “lot of circumstantial evidence” that exposure to tetrachloroethlene increases the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease nine fold. Larger population studies are planned. Tetrachloroethene exposure can be evaluated by a breath test similar to a breathalyzer test for alcoholic intake. Because it is stored in the body’s fat and slowly released into the bloodstream, tetrachloroethene can be detected in the breath for weeks following a heavy exposure. Tetrachloroethylene and trichloroacetic acid (TCA), a breakdown product of tetrachloroethene, can be detected in the blood. It is estimated that, through processing, roughly 85% of tetrachloroethylene is released into the atmosphere. Some measurements assume 90% of that is released into the air and 10% into the water. Tetrachloroethene is a common soil contaminant. Because of the mobility of PCE in groundwater, its toxicity at low levels and its density (which causes it to sink below the water table), cleanup activities are more difficult than cleanup for oil spills. Recent research focused on the in-place remediation of soil and ground water pollution by tetrachloroethylene. Instead of excavation or extraction for above-ground treatment or disposal, tetrachloroethylene contamination is successfully treated through chemical November 2010

bioremediation. Bioremediation was also found to be successful under certain circumstances. What does this information mean for all of us? Studies show that effects to short term PERC exposure were mild and disappeared soon after exposure ended. Numerous studies of dry-cleaning workers show that long term exposure (9 to 20 years for example) to PERC in the workplace reduces scores on behavioral tests and causes biochemical changes in blood and urine. Even though these effects were mild and hard to detect, how long these effects would last if exposure ended is still not known. Some studies show a slightly increased risk of some types of cancer and reproductive effects among dry-cleaning workers exposed to PERC and other chemicals. Associated cancers due to exposure include cancers of the esophagus, bladder and non-Hodgkin’s four lymphoma. Cancers less clearly associated with exposures include cancers of the cervix, tongue and lung. The reproductive effects associated with exposure included increased risks of spontaneous abortion, menstrual and sperm disorders and reduced fertility. The data suggest, but do not prove, that the effects were caused by PERC and not by some other factor or factors. The bottom line: everything in moderation. We’re all inundated by chemicals and toxins in our everyday work and living place. Toxic exposure is a fact of operating in a modern world. Be armed with knowledge about what exists “out there” in our environment, implement personal measures to protect yourself - such as reading Healthy Beginnings Magazine for the latest update on health issues, concerns and resolutions! - then take appropriate action to stay as healthy as humanly possible within your resources and means! Sherry Asp,

Certified Professional Midwife & California Licensed Midwife Written By Ffjorren Zolfaghar

Sherry Asp, CA Licensed Midwife, says that her business in Reno, Aspiring Birth Midwifery & Doula Services, offers similar services compared to other local midwives and doulas. However, her assistant is a Reiki Master and massage therapist and her apprentice specializes in hypnobirthing. These additional services are always available to her clients, throughout their pregnancy; which offers alternative solutions to stubborn pregnancy-related pains. Hypnobirthing is a method where mother-to-be can learn to “go inside [herself] and shut off pain receptors while [she’s] in labor,” Sherry said. Reiki is a form of healing where the healer transfers healing energy to the person who is ill, through the palms of their hands. Both of these practices, or modalities, are great tools and resources for moms in their first to third trimester, or even beyond the pregnancy. The general care that all clients receive includes prenatal care and attendance at birth, by Sherry and her assistant and apprentice. They also receive a newborn exam, breastfeeding support and six weeks of postpartum care, an Ultrasound, lab work, the baby’s birth certificate and social security card filing. Most insurances companies cover these services; however Sherry offers a cash discount to those who do not have insurance. For those who receive medical assistance from the government, they unfortunately cannot receive coverage for midwife or doula services. In order for the government medical plan to offer coverage, a provider needs to carry a license. However, the state of NV does not regulate midwifery; therefore, they do not offer a licensure program for midwives. It is a catch 22. “That’s a whole other issue I want Nevadans to work on, to get NV Midwifery licensure,” Sherry explained. that at-home births provide better outcomes for mom overall (less risk of C-section, episiotomy, hemorrhaging). Plus, “I didn’t have to leave and drive while in labor. I was able to stay in the comfort of my own home. My midwife served me breakfast,” she said. She was attracted to the idea of at-home births after feeling traumatized during the birth of her niece, when Sherry was 17 years old. She recalled the tubes, wires and needles that were routine with hospital deliveries. Sherry said that she “ended up choosing to have a homebirth with a midwife seven years later with my first child. The experience was so different that I knew I wanted to offer that option to women in my community.” Currently, Sherry only practices midwifery with at-home birth clients. She primarily works in the Reno and Sparks area and limits herself to three births a month. If it does become a case where her client begins to birth at home and then unforeseen circumstances prompt them to go to the hospital, Sherry knows staff at both of the local hospitals. Most importantly, Sherry is an easy-going person who is non-abrasive, warm and friendly. She speaks from her own experiences with midwifery and has a good relationship with local hospital staff, which helps some of her clients feel more comfortable. She truly enjoys what she does and genuinely cares about the women she works with, even with the potentially odd hours, long work days and possible weekend and holiday shifts. This attitude is a must in this non-spontaneous profession; you have to be ready for anything. “I really don’t mind being called at 2 am, when women are in labor,” she said. That says it all. Spontaneous Evolution:

Our Positive Future (And a Way to Get There from Here) By Dr. Bruce Lipton and Steve Bhaerman Reviewed by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHTFor Healthy Beginnings Magazine

survival of the individual to the survival of the species. When we realize that each one of us is a cell in the body of humanity, and understand that only by becoming much more awake and aware, will we be able to fully participate in and experience what may be the most profound and pivotal moment in the history of the planet. We are experiencing crisis in every area: finance, education, health care, politics, culture and the environment. The authors don’t just tell us what’s wrong. They offer very creative, very carefully thought-out solutions to our problems.

ome well known authors believe this may be the most important book to be published in this decade. Author Deepak Chopra feels that, “The implications of this powerful book have the potential to change the world.” Gregg Braden feels that Spontaneous Evolution was well worth waiting for. “With just the right blend of spiritual humor and rock-solid science, Bruce Lipton and Steve Bhaerman have cast a welcome holistic light on an emerging new civilization.”

Bruce Lipton is a world-renowned expert in the emerging science of epigenetics, (the understanding that our thoughts and beliefs affect and even control our genes), and in collaboration with political philosopher Steve Bhaerman, invites readers to reconsider basic ideas that we were taught about random evolution, survival of the fittest, and the role of DNA in our health, as well as the relationship between mind and matter. Those old beliefs are not serving us. We are now becoming aware of how our beliefs, true or false, about nature and human nature shape our politics, culture and individual lives. The authors believe that by questioning the old beliefs that got us where we are today and that keep us stuck in the status quo, we can trigger the spontaneous evolution of our species that will usher in a much brighter future.

Lipton draws the analogy between our awakening humanity and the metamorphosis of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly, by explaining that life is in a constant state of perpetual re-creation. He says, “If you find it hard to imagine that we can ever get from the crises that we are now facing to a more loving and functional world, consider the tale of another world in transition. Imagine you are a single cell among millions that comprise a growing caterpillar. The structure around you has been operating like a well-oiled machine, and the larva world has been creeping along predictably. Then one day, the machine begins to shudder and shake. The system begins to fail. Cells begin to commit suicide and there is a sense of darkness and impending doom.”

Steve Bhaerman is an author, humorist, political and cultural commentator, and has been writing and performing enlightening comedy as Swami Beyondananda for over 20 years. He is a pioneer in alternative education and holistic publications, is active in transpartisan politics and the practical application of the ideas in Spontaneous Evolution. His humor shines through Bruce’s explanation of pure science, in chapter headings such as “In a shrinking world that can use a good shrink, we don’t need another theory of evolution. What we need is a practice of evolution,” or “When you find yourself on a vicious cycle, for goodness sakes, keep peddling!” or “Why don’t we go for Heaven on Earth, just for the hell of it?” Steve’s humor doesn’t just end up as titles. It is throughout every chapter, making the pure science much more fun and easier to understand. Also, Bhaerman’s political philosophy is brilliant, creative and a breath of fresh air. The collaboration of these two men, with expertise in very different fields, has created an extraordinary book, actually a manual of how we can change our perceptions and actions, and therefore consciously contribute to the evolution of our civilization. This is a non-fiction book that you won’t be able to put down. HB

“From within the dying population, a new breed of cells begins to emerge, called imaginal cells. Clustering in community, they devise a plan to create something entirely new from the wreckage. Out of the decay arises a great flying machine – a butterfly – that enables the survivor cells to escape from the ashes and experience a beautiful world, far beyond imagination. Here is the amazing thing: the caterpillar and the butterfly have the exact same DNA. They are the same organism but are receiving and responding to a different organizing signal.” That is pretty much where we are today. When we watch TV, we see the media reporting a “caterpillar world.” Yet everywhere, human imaginal cells are awakening to a new probability. Chances are you are among the imaginal cells who are contributing to the birth of this new version of humanity. The future is in our hands, and to secure that future, we must understand how our previous programming shapes our lives. The authors explain that we can no longer continue trying to solve our problems with the same awareness, information and attitudes from which they were created. We need a spontaneous re-missioning of civilization, changing the focus from the November 2010

ll humans are conglomerations of electromagnetic energy and as a result, our bodies function as dynamic electric circuits. Cells transmit and receive energy, and each has its own vibrational frequency range. When the cell vibrates within that range, it’s healthy and works just as it was designed. Harvard University research suggests that each cell is processing at the speed of a hundred thousand actions per second. In order to show their medical students what is happening in the cell (in slow motion), Harvard hired a video company to make some short movies which show exactly how different parts of the cells are interacting. You can view some of these videos (choose the 3-minute music version for a stunning look at what’s going on inside your body) http:// It is so beautiful it will almost make you cry.

healthy state. One of the most advanced devices is the Ondamed Biofeedback Device. The word is pronounced Onda-med and was developed by Dr. Rolf Binder in Germany, over fifteen years ago. It allows the practitioner to detect weakness or disorder in a patient’s body instantly and simultaneously delivers the “correct” frequencies, ones that will support the patient’s physical and emotional well-being. Another modality, which does the same thing without the machine, is called BodyTalk. During a BodyTalk session the practitioner uses applied kinesiology (tiny muscle movements) in the client’s wrist area to interpret what his or her body needs. The muscles don’t lie. Questions are asked (either verbally or silently) and the body’s muscles answer with a certain tiny movement for yes and another for no. vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change Written By Eric Francis

Horoscope for Health | Oct 23, 2010 - Nov 22, 2010

his has been an extraordinary year, by that I mean extraordinarily challenging. Everyone who has made it through with a modicum of their sanity intact deserves a hug, so consider yourself hugged. What has kept you going? Perseverance? Faith in yourself? The desire for a better life? Or was it sheer necessity? We now get to focus on desire. Venus will be retrograde in Scorpio and Libra through mid-November, helping us sift through our emotional attachments and material belongings and decide what comes with us into the future and what gets to stay in the past. That said, Venus retrograde always brings visitors from the days of yore. Old friends and lovers can turn up. They may be visiting, they may be here to stay for a while or they may be reminding us of the prior emotional orientation we left behind and why we did so.

Aries (March 20-April 19) What you’ve experienced in some of the most intimate aspects of your life has revealed many secrets of a relationship, but really it’s said much more about you than a “situation.” You may still be tempted to think what you’re learning is about someone else; though I suggest you take this opportunity to deepen your relationship to yourself. The inner truths that are emerging now have been veiled for many years, and will show you how to make contact with aspects of your psyche that you crave deeply and often (mistakenly) search for in contact with others. Once you can provide these essential nutrients for yourself, you will have happier and gentler experiences with partners -- if you remember that from now on, there are no compromises on truth. Taurus (April 19-May 20) What seems to be about sex, pair bonding, marriage or romance is actually focused on healing. With that as your orientation or focal point, you will be able to make better sense of your life and better use of your emotional energy. Healing may seem like an unattractive agenda because it implies that there are injuries, or that there are past situations that need to be resolved. We’re used to either ignoring these things or considering them so deeply buried we can’t get to them. So what’s the use of trying? But your life needs focus and your relationships need focus -- and the past does have a way of weighing on you. That might be the first thing to consider: what in the past has so much energy or power? What is your attachment to it today? Gemini (May 20-June 21) You may be uncertain whether you want to retreat indo a deeply private space, or proclaim your reality to the world. Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

If you’re considering doing both, you go in the order above: private first, then outward. You’re processing some deep material, particularly around your sexuality and your way of having relationships. You’re the kind of person who says what’s on your mind and who goes for what you want, but you have inner material that’s all but begging for your attention. If you pay attention to what is percolating from the deepest layers of your psyche, your desires will change, as will your perception of your needs. Since you have a good chance of getting what you reach for, I suggest you make sure it’s what you really want. CANCER (June 22-July 22) It’s possible that you may rekindle an involvement with an old lover at the same time a present involvement is deeply compelling. Notice how the relationships relate to one another. While you’re exploring your emotions, I suggest you watch the karma of these situations vigilantly. That’s another way of saying be aware what the situations breed. Notice what you are creating. Observe the influence they have on the world around you, including the immediate shifts of energy even in situations that seem to have no connection to the relationships involved. I am suggesting that what you do behind the scenes or between the sheets ripples out into the world in unusual ways, and that will provide the true reading on whether this situation, in total, is creative, healthy or wholesome. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) If your life has seemed like a window that you haven’t been able to get clean, you may finally be seeing some clear light. Nobody wants to be caught in the past, or in perceiving existence through the filters of the past. You’re fortunate to be someone committed to living in the present, 36

November 2010

and who honors the value of doing so. Those last few streaks on the glass were beliefs that may have worked in the past but which were clouding your perception of people, and situations, how they are today. How would that be? More solid and grounded than your home life and partnerships have been for many seasons. If you need to be reminded, I suggest you orient your life around your stove and work your way out from there. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Are you willing to give up your old ideas about sex and marriage? Our society is guided by some strict rules that are tattooed into children before they turn three. At the moment you are on a deep personal inquiry as to the nature of those influences, and there is the suggestion of an exchange -- that you can give up what does not work in exchange for identifying what does. You may need to proceed in that order; or you may be able to reach directly for what you want, if you figure out that it’s an original thought. Yet that seems to be the nature of the quest: discovering whether what you think you want is what you want. Just because everyone else seems to want something doesn’t make it right for you. Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) Now is the time to practice devotion to that which you’re truly devoted. Remember that the object of devotion is not outside of yourself. That’s to say, if you’re devoted to a relationship that is not as much about the other person as it is about your feelings toward them. If you’re devoted to an idea, that’s not really an idea as much as it is something, an aspect of your psyche, with life inside yourself. This is the thing to remember: that you are tending to your own devotion, and your own value of what is meaningful. Sometimes paying heed to something with that much energy calls on us to give something up, which we deem of lesser value. I suggest you do that with no sense of conflict. What is truly yours will come back to you. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) Venus has been retrograde in your sign for nearly a month, which may be playing havoc with your emotions. In truth, this is a signal that it’s time to reevaluate a relationship. What to consider, however, is not the structure, finances or commitment status of the relationship, but rather your feelings toward your situation and toward the person involved. Do you really feel there is deep contact and empathy? Do you feel you’re getting your wants and needs met, and do you feel appreciated for what you’re offering? Relationships are based on an organic exchange and that elusive thing called simpatico. Now is the time to observe what you really feel, rather than what you think you’re supposed to be feeling.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Winter is your season, and it’s approaching. Not everyone can appreciate the bare, stark beauty of the Earth; most people feel a sense of loss. Yet at this moment, I trust you can feel a sense of your own presence in the world. Your presence might remind you that something or someone is missing. If that is true, here’s what I suggest: consider where that person is; consider whether they’re happy, and living their true calling. We carry around plenty of judgments about what people do, based on how those decisions leave us feeling. The remedy here is to focus on your existence, your desires, and your unusual sense of soul calling that is at the forefront of your priorities every day. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Now is the time to ask yourself whether you’re at home in your career. By at home, I mean, does it work with or against the natural contours of who you are? Do you feel as safe and secure in your workspace as you do in your living space? And is your work emotionally gratifying? That is the most meaningful measure, though how you relate to the physical space is vital. There is one other factor, which is devotion. Devotion is something that lives through you, not something you have to do. Yes, you may need to tend the fire, but the fire burns of its own accord. This month the planets are asking: is your career related to your deepest devotion in life? If not, what would it take to get you there? If so, how can you share this with others? Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) You often feel under the influence of others. They can -and will -- do what they want, and the question is why this has such a profound effect on you. You seem to know this, though your awareness falls off right at the point where you recognize your influence on them. Noticing this isn’t going to get you where you need to be, but if you at least focus on how the energy moves in both directions, you’ll feel more like a participant in your life rather than someone who is merely along for the ride. Pay attention to that distinction: the more you actively participate in every facet of your existence -- especially your relationships -- the more you’ll feel like your life is truly your own. That, if I may surmise, will get you where you want to be. HB THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) You may feel like you’re backsliding. I can see that you have a sense of something missing, or of something being just a little out of reach. Yet don’t think your doubts, if they exist, will hold up for long. A number of different movements in your life will add up to a revelation of how far you’ve come, and why it would be wise for you to be grateful for November 2010

that. One of the things that this brief phase of your life is offering you is the opportunity to focus on emotional nourishment. This is typically not the easiest thing for you to get moving; yet you can now make contact with the ways in which you both need emotional contact, and need to offer the same to others. This will nourish your soul, and your ideas.

Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

In 1497, the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama set sail for an around the world voyage with three ships and 1500 men. He returned three years later with one ship and less than half of his sailors. The rest of his men died of scurvy. Scurvy is a nasty disease caused by vitamin C deficiency and manifests with weakness, joint pain, bleeding gums, loose teeth and teeth falling out, petechiae ( purple spots all over the body), bruising, manic depressive illness and sudden death “in the middle of a sentence” according to one account. For centuries, Northern Europeans suffered with scurvy toward spring when they ran out of fresh food. Man is one of the only animals that doesn’t make vitamin C. Man, primates, Guinea pigs and fruit bats are the only species that don’t make vitamin C in their livers from glucose. For example, a goat that weighs 150 pounds makes 13,000 mg of vitamin C per day and we don’t make any! We are all vitamin C deficient. I recommend two or three thousand milligrams per day of buffered vitamin C ascorbates for everybody and much more when people are sick or have cancer, up to 100,000 mg per day intravenously. The discovery of vitamin C by St. Giorgi in the 1920’s was a milestone in modern medicine. Dr. Frederick Klenner, MD in 1949 cured 60 out of 60 polio patients with vitamin C injections, sometimes with as little as 1,000 mg of vitamin C in babies with bulbar (can’t breath) polio. He reported this to the AMA and was roundly ignored. In 1747, Scottish naval surgeon James Lind found that by feeding one lime per day to British sailors they could completely avoid scurvy. To this day British sailors are still called “limeys”. However, the British admiralty didn’t institute the limes into the naval diet until 1827, 80 years later. Medical progress never moves quickly. Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

Vitamin C is necessary for the maintenance of our connective tissue, ligaments, blood vessels, teeth ligaments, skin (wrinkles) as well as immunity and detoxification. The highest concentration of vitamin C in the human body is in the adrenal gland and secondarily in the brain. Adequate vitamin C for the adrenal gland is a very great deterrent to fatigue, anxiety, depression, insomnia, poor memory and generalized inability to deal with stress. The RDA (recommended daily allowance) of vitamin C is still a mere 60 mg per day. This number was generated during wartime and is the minimum amount of C needed to stop abject scurvy, but is certainly not the optimal dose for anybody to avoid chronic illness. Dieticians still site this as the holy grail of vitamin C dosage. This low dose will cause chronic disease in everyone. Why not get it from your food? One glass of freshly squeezed orange juice gives 100 mg of vitamin C. Even one gram (1,000 mg) of vitamin C would require 10 glasses of OJ per day with all that sugar and potential heartburn. You can’t get enough vitamin C from a standard American diet without supplementing. If you are sick, intravenous vitamin C can be life saving! IV vitamin C turns into peroxide in high dosage and it induces the body’s TH-1 immune system, the macrophages (big eater) white blood cells to go after viruses and bacteria, and cancer for that matter. White blood cells eat bacteria and viruses and then shower them with peroxide (H2O2) which kills them and is completely safe for normal human cells. It is beyond tragic that you can’t get an IV of vitamin C in a hospital in our time. Myofascial Release with Sonatherapy Submitted By Steamboat Hot Springs

Have you been told that you have to “just have to live with pain” or that the pain “is all in your head?” Have you altered your lifestyle because of pain (unable to socialize, care for your children, work, exercise, etc.)? Do you feel exhausted and run down much of the time? Have you visited a chiropractor or acupuncturist with little success, tried different pain medications or injections, or even had surgery? If these scenarios sound familiar, you may find relief from Myofascial Release. Myofascial Release offers a non-invasive, medication-free alternative for resolving pain and other symptoms. It is a safe, effective massage technique in which focused, sustained pressure is directed to the connective tissue to cause it to elongate, eliminating pain and restoring motion. Fascia is a layer of fibrous tissue that permits movement within the human body. It penetrates and surrounds muscles, bones, organs, nerves, blood vessels and other tissues. The most interesting aspect of the fascial system is that it is not just a group of separate coverings, it is one continuous structure that extends from head to toe. Each part of the body is connected to every other part by the fascia, like yarn in a sweater. Come Experience Myo means “muscle,” and myofascial refers to fascia that wraps and shields the muscular tissues. Trauma, inflammation and surgical procedures create myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures as much as 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain-sensitive areas. Many people who suffer with pain and lack of motion may have fascial problems, and most go undiagnosed. Let our master massage Conditions that can benefit from myofascial release are chronic back and neck pain, therapists use their special carpal tunnel syndrome, dizziness, vertigo, fibromyalgia, headache, plantar fasciitis, touch for relaxation and post-polio symptoms, TMJ (jaw) dysfunction, women’s reproductive issues, toxicity rejuvenation. he “Two-Buck Chuck” phenomenon is largely old news by now, but people still frequently tell me things like, “you know, that Charles Shaw [Merlot, Chardonnay, etc.] from Trader Joe’s isn’t half bad” or “heck, I don’t need anything fancy, I like the ‘two-buck chuck’ from TJ’s just fine” et al. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it’s just that in my mission to make wine friendly, affordable and delicious for all, I have trouble accepting that “just fine” and “not half bad” is the best praise the novice or casual wine drinker might have for his or her daily sip. I am particularly frustrated by the ease with which folks will accept this mediocre status quo.

Now, please don’t mistake my frustration for snobbery; I am in fact truly grateful to the folks behind the Charles Shaw label because in the past few years they have succeeded in bringing fine wine (for our purposes, fine wine denotes anything beyond Boone’s Farm or Thunderbird) to the attention of a huge number of Americans who previously may never have had the interest or the courage to try it. Statistics show that United States per capita wine consumption is up over the past ten years, even where overall sales may currently be down due to the economy, and I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge how meaningful the effect of Charles Shaw had on the growth in the market. More people are enjoying the benefits of wine with dinner than ever before and I am excited by this development. Having said that, I would like to offer that there are in fact MANY very affordable and interesting choices out there for your wine drinking pleasure that are perhaps being overlooked, and I would like to suggest a few ideas for upping your price/quality ratio immensely, for those who are ready to spend just two or three dollars more per bottle. Generalizing is risky, but I feel that wine is an area where you can often safely do just that. Number one and simplest is: up to a certain price point, the more expensive it is, the better the quality of the wine and the better it will taste. It’s true most of the time. This means that for a couple of dollars over $2.99 you can often, with a bit of direction, find a wine that is three or four times as tasty. I get really excited when I can convince a friend to spend five or six dollars instead of three and they tell me the next day how much more Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

You do not even need to enter a potentially intimidating wine specialty shop to procure such intriguing bargain wines such as Torrontes from Argentina, Shiraz or Reisling from Australia, Cinsault or Ugni Blanc from Southern France, Colombard from Southwest France, Garnacha from Spain, Chenin Blanc from South Africa, Sauvignon Blanc from Chile or New Zealand. Many of these are available at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods or Safeway. A quick check with the wine department staff in any of these stores, many of whom are experienced wine fans on a budget themselves, can easily yield an exciting new relationship with a really stunning bargain wine. I suggest you take this list along with you on your next shopping trip and discuss it with your store’s wine staff. I find that for many people five, six or for some even eight dollars is a number they feel comfortable spending on an “everyday” wine, and if you are open to this than you can reasonably expect to have a extremely satisfying if not revelatory wine drinking experience. In the healthy pursuit of a balanced, tasteful and pleasurable life, isn’t that better than “just fine” or “not half bad”? HB

We use the word “grounded” in many different ways. From a psychological perspective, to be grounded means that we are “down to earth” and don’t have our “head in the clouds.” There is a certain stability associated with being grounded, for the word implies a firm footing, or rootedness. When we are grounded we are able to dream big, but also appreciate the work it will take to achieve these dreams. The Greek myth of Icarus offers insight into the psychology of groundedness. It is the story of a young man who is being taught by his father how to fly. They wear hand-made wings comprised of feathers, held in place with wax. Icarus’s father sternly warns his son to not fly too close to the sun lest its heat melt the wax and destroy the wings. Icarus, however, enthralled with his new-found power, ignores his father’s warnings and flies ever higher. Predictably, his wings disintegrate and he falls to his death.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

One reason why this myth has endured for so many generations is because it speaks to a recurring theme in human life. That theme involves our natural tendency, perhaps especially when young, to abuse the power that comes with a new ability or privilege. Similar to when a person first receives their driver’s license or were first placed in a position of authority over others. It is not uncommon to push (or break) the limits of a new ability or freedom before we learn how to relate to it in a responsible way.

One area where it is easy to become ungrounded is in our spirituality. Spiritual ideas and principles sometimes get so lofty, abstract or one-sided that they lose touch with basic human experience. For example, we may deny our feelings or the wisdom of our instincts because we feel that “spiritual people” should not have these feelings, thoughts or impulses. We force ourselves to conform to certain ideals or to a certain picture of perfection. Sometimes we make ourselves slaves to this picture and then demand that others conform to these ideals as well. This seems to be the nature of fundamentalism, be it religious, political or some other kind. We become so focused on what we believe is “right,” that we forget about the importance of relationship and our shared humanity.

The myth of Icarus warns of the dangers of what is called “ego inflation.” Ego inflation occurs when we have become overly idealistic or one-sided in our viewpoint or approach to life. It is as if we are hypnotized by our own ideas or goals to the exclusion of other perspectives. When we are so attached and feel so right (as in righteous) about our perspective, we have a tendency to be controlling or to play God in our relationships. Other people may experience us as arrogant or closed-minded. Ego inflation is akin to being “high” and is sometimes symbolized as such in our dreams. Illicit drugs and alcohol, especially when used in a compulsive way, can be a way of running from life. This could be our outer life, or some aspect of our inner life. We can’t be grounded when we are running from life.

Carl Jung believed that the goal of human development is wholeness, not perfection. To become whole is a process of making peace with our entire self: masculine and feminine, light and dark, spiritual and material, adult and child, etc. Whereas perfection tends to elevate one aspect of the personality over another, divine over human for instance, wholeness seeks the integration and union of opposites within our personality. The path of wholeness is a grounding process, for it engages our whole being and does not reject any part of our humanity. Whereas perfection embraces our ideals and aspirations, wholeness seeks the awareness and maturation of our total self. The path towards wholeness grounds us by tempering our expectations with compassion and a thoughtful recognition of our own and others’ humanness. HB

Another use of the term grounded relates to the idea of punishment. Children (and airplane pilots) are grounded when they break the rules. When we feel and behave as if we are above the law, above authority, we sometimes need to be brought back to earth and reminded that we are not God. We need to be re-grounded, or humbled. Of course, grounding does not always achieve this end, but this is its deeper purpose.

HarperCollins: San Francisco 1998. 3. Johnson, Robert A. Inner Gold: Understanding Psychological Projection. Koa Books: Kihei, Hawaii 2008.

The need for grounding may be communicated to us through our dreams and outer life. To fall, or to dream of falling, often means that we need to come back down to earth in some way. Perhaps we are running from certain responsibilities in life, or from an important insight regarding our life. Sometimes it is because we are so focused on our own viewpoint or goals that we become closed off to everything else. Dreams of plane crashes or of being in a building or scaffolding high above the ground can also indicate a need to come back to earth.

In Jungian psychology, reference is sometimes made to the “puer aeternis.” This is a Latin term meaning “the eternal boy.” Nowadays it is often called the “Peter Pan syndrome.” It describes a man (or woman, in the case of an eternal girl) who is old enough to be an adult but who refuses to take on the responsibilities of an adult. Such a person tends to resist making commitments in life. They are always seeking the next adventure, the new and exciting. In this way, they avoid the more difficult and less glamorous responsibilities of adult life. When the going gets tough, they get going--to some other place, career or relationship.

All Health is Holistic Health

Chiron Files vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change

Written By Eric Francis

enus is retrograde and the Sun is in Scorpio. In traditional astrology, this is the sign of the privy parts, and that deep, compelling emotional/hormonal quality that makes you want to say yes. When it happens, a rare planetary retrograde like Venus takes center stage in the celestial order. This transit, which lasts till Nov. 18, is first and foremost about connecting with what we desire. We humans in the Western Hemisphere have little clue as to the extent to which our strict, contradictory and hypocritical values about our sexuality fuel emotional and physical illness, and wreak havoc on our relationships. To an even greater extent, being clear about our sexual values will help us create happiness and harmony in our lives, a process which, in a word, I would describe as integrity. Retrograde planets have three basic tendencies. First, they point us toward the past. This is where nearly all of

our struggle is lodged, which is odd since the past doesn’t exist. But the patterns we established there often remain in our emotional bodies as negative expectations. I can think of no better image than Venus retrograde in Scorpio to help us admit these patterns and let them go. There may also be an experience of remembering what we actually desire, but which we left behind because we decided that it was not possible to create for ourselves. Note that past lovers can come back into our lives, encounters which might be about rekindling the relationship or healing and resolving the prior experience. The next tendency, also helpful, is that retrogrades can point to childhood and adolescent situations that we now have a chance to recall and understand. Childhood and adolescence are full of sexual insults, and they tend to sour us. Whether parents misinform us of what to expect, or set horrendous examples, I believe that it helps to see these influences and replace them with healthier, more creative ways of being. What exactly were we taught, in words and by example, from the powerful adults who surrounded us?

by connecting with what is authentically who we are. I know that most people fear they would be out in the cold and lose all their friends if they dared to be real. Then one day you reach the point where you have to be real or you cannot take another breath. One of the core elements of health, and of sexual health, is the ability to live authentically. This begins with making contact with the inner truth we carry around and crave to acknowledge. Venus retrogrades from Scorpio to Libra, which means that the transformation process goes right into our relationships. These can be the source of strength and support, if we live them authentically. That starts with us. Venus retrograde is a reminder that it’s time to get real. Under the current astrology, I would offer that as my best idea for health and happiness. HB Eric Francis is the author of the Planet Waves column, available by subscription at

Finally, retrogrades point us within. Here is where we can make the most progress,

Brown the ground beef in a skillet over moderate heat; drain any excess fat. Stir in red pepper flakes, thyme, tomato sauce, eggplant, and water. In a bowl combine the egg substitute, ricotta, Italian cheese blend, and parsley. Place enough meat sauce to cover the bottom of slow cooker. Top with 2-3 noodles, broken to cover the meat sauce. Repeat layer. Top second layer with cheese mixture and finish with a top layer of the meat mixture. Cover and set slow cooker on low. Cook for 3 1/2 to 4 hours.

The Healing Dance | Thai Yoga Massage

hai yoga massage blends energy work with tissue manipulation through extensive stretching. The massage includes large amounts of movement, and is very rhythmic, like a dance between the practitioner and client. The massage is performed on a mat with the client fully clothed. The massage runs Sen lines, designed to move energy within the body. The other portion of the massage involves multiples stretches

designed to break up stiffness and open the body. The pace of the massage is adjusted to slow or speed the body dependent on the client. If a client feels sluggish, or moves quickly, the massage is adjusted accordingly. This massage can be great for an introduction to massage, as a sports massage, or as a great maintenance massage.
