ith the changing of the seasons, chill in the air and the holiday season underway, 2013 has nearly come to an end. We take this moment to look back at our exciting and eventful successes at Healthy Beginnings throughout the year and we keep coming back to one common thought...we couldn’t have done any of it without the help of YOU! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thank YOU! Our Supporters - Our Volunteers - Our Community! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Our mission statement is:

Healthy Beginnings believes that all children should enter kindergarten healthy and prepared to learn. Our work fosters healthy, nurtured children, families and communities by bringing accessible physical developmental and behavioral screenings to children from birth through age five. So how have we been successfully accomplishing our mission for 20 years? We do it because of the effort, energy and devotion that comes from talented experts, generous community members and dedicated volunteers who believe in our mission as much as we do. During this holiday season, when your family and friends are gathered around the table, and you take a moment to toast to one another… sure to toast to yourselves……..because YOU matter… us, to our community, to the children we serve and to Healthy Beginnings! Cheers to YOU!

grandmother t a recent school outreach event, program staff A brought A her connected with a child and his mom whose life has granddaughter to the screening— this family had come to the prior screening and wanted to measure the change in their little one. The child and mother are involved in a domestic violence situation and were on their own. At the early Spring screening this child had many referrals, developmental, behavioral.. the list goes on and on. The family followed up on the referrals and got that little one into an Early Childhood Special Education evaluation. This young girl has been receiving services since spring and while she still is showing some delays—it was noted that she is doing MUCH better and scoring better on the assessments-Grandma mentioned how thankful she was that we were here for her family and their ongoing needs.

been changed for the better because we were there. This little guy was screened by Healthy Beginnings when he was 2 1/2 years old. His mom came to the screening with concerns regarding his speech. She had noticed that her son’s speech seemed slow to develop compared to that of his sister’s. At the screening we did identify a speech delay and provided the family with a referral to ECSE, Early Childhood Special Education. The boy, now 4 years old, while still involved in ECSE, has shown great improvement in every area of his life. His mom shared that his improved development has affected the entire family. She is truly grateful that now “he has a bright future.”

mother, who has been involved with Healthy Beginnings A through volunteer efforts, brought her son through a screening. During the screening, at the vision station, she learned the importance of getting a vision exam for her son at an early age. Through the InfantSee program, her son had a vision exam by an optometrist. Two years later, this mother followed up as requested and brought her son back for a checkup and learned that he did indeed need glasses. The doctor told her if she had waited until her son was school age that they would have not been able to correct his vision, and even with glasses would never be able to see 20/20. Thanks to a Healthy Beginnings screening, this child sees clearly and will not need corrective lenses. Four years ago, kids have a healthier start, by removing a major barrier H ealt h y Begin n in gs to needed service. The unexpected benefit is how these became a Healthy Kids grants have enabled us to improve and strengthen grantee to help serve Healthy Beginning’s outreach. Healthy Beginnings’ staff Central Oregon families with their need for insuring have connected with thousands of families throughout their children. What we found was that there was a our region and provided traction for the program to growing number of children not seeing a primary move into Jefferson and Crook Counties. What we health care provider - simply because the family had have found is that when a family needs insurance - they limited means and little or no health insurance. This often have a young child who also needs a screening. Healthy Kids grant, now evolved into Cover Oregon, These grants have leveraged Healthy Beginnings’ limited allows Healthy Beginnings’ staff to work with families resources and have improved to assist them with the application process. These 2 the level of service we provide projects have been instrumental in helping us help local children and families.
