What does this mean? It means that parents who are unable to come to one of our 12-point screenings are still able to get their child screened by one of our Healthy Beginnings’ experts. The online ASQ, completed by a parent or guardian, can give us enough information about their child to assess their level of development so that we can refer them to the proper referral if necessary. Check out this new ASQ online by visiting our website at myhb.org (click on services—screenings—screening requests.)

We are excited to announce that Healthy Beginnings is celebrating its 20th year of serving Central Oregon’s children and families by offering FREE health screenings to children from zero to 5 years of age.
Healthy Beginnings would not have been able to accomplish this incredible milestone if it weren’t for the amazing community supporters. Donors, volunteers, board members, sponsors and those that attend our events throughout the year show their support in Healthy Beginnings and the families that we serve. It truly takes a village to accomplish 20 years of success.

Volunteers ...are gifts to our community…
Beginnings is now partnering with local preschools bringing them a custom health and development team of experts to children under 5 years of age. Focusing primarily on 4 essential areas; Vision, Hearing, Behavior and Development, our 4b45 screenings are taking place conveniently at preschools and daycares throughout all of Central Oregon. Since parents are so busy these days, so Healthy Beginnings is trying to make it as easy and as convenient as possible to assess the health of their children.
If you know of a preschool or daycare that would like to schedule our team of experts to come through their facility and to screen their kiddos, please have them contact Healthy Beginnings to schedule in their 4b45 screening date.
At Healthy Beginnings, volunteers make a difference every day. At our screenings they provide an amazing amount of support, helping parents and young children have a better tomorrow. But this is not the only way that they make an impact! You will see our volunteers providing outreach, helping in the office with administrative work, or using their contacts to network and fundraise for the program, as well as in countless other ways—all of which help HB leverage resources to better connect with families and reach more children. Volunteers have a special spark and passion for the program that makes them fantastic ambassadors in the community. Their enthusiasm for serving young children and families is immense and it shows in the work they do.

Shelley Irwin has recently taken over volunteer coordination for the organization, and is interested in reconnecting with volunteers. Please call or email Shelley and let her know your interests and desires for helping out at HB! email@example.com
STAMPS of APPROVAL A Bear-Hug Testimonial Written by Anna Della Maggiora
I feel like I met an angel on earth when I met Erin. Erin, a kindergarten teacher here in Central Oregon, came to our 12-point health screening with two darling little girls; one that is 5 months old and one that is 2 years old. After talking with Erin, I quickly learned that she and her husband had not been able to have children of their own. So she continue to explain that, through their church, they learned about a young couple who were severely struggling with drug addiction and trying to raise two very young daughters. The young couple was at serious risk of losing their children to the system while they were dealing with their addictions and financial difficulties. Erin and her husband made the loving and quick decision to step in and assist as foster parents. Hoping to keep the kids close and safe, the biological parents agreed to allow Erin and her husband to raise their children while they work on getting ‘clean’ and straightening out their lives. Only 2 months into this new ‘mother’ role, Erin decides to take these girls to our 12-point health screening. With the convenience of all the health experts at one place, Erin was relieved that she can get extensive health advice under one roof and where she could be referred to additional support in order to tend to the high needs of both these girls. During the screening, Erin confirmed that both girls have significant concerns in many health and development areas.
Erin had decided to resign her job as a kindergarten teacher to commit her energy and time to serving these girls, a true financial sacrifice and dedication. And if that’s not enough……Erin and her husband have chosen to keep the biological parents in the loop and part of raising these children. This way, the young couple can focus on improving their lives knowing that their children are safe and are connected with services that will make a difference.
