Health camp Vydehi hospital recently conducted a Mega General Health Camp at Lakkur (Mallur Tq) in liason with HAL (Composite Manufacturing Division). The camp attracted as many as 1620 patients in all age groups from the neighboring towns & villages. The camp was indeed a huge success as it was a very well coordinated team effort of all VIMS & RC doctors, paramedics & other staffs.

New developments in Dual Energy X-ray Absorptionmetry (DEXA) technology have lead to major improvements in diagnosing osteoporosis, more accurately and also in determining future fracture risk, and in also, diagnosing certain cardiovascular diseases by assessing aortic wall calcifications.

Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences recently established a state-of-the-art Bone Mineral Density Estimating Equipment.

Bone Density (or Bone Mineral Density) refers to the amount of mineral matter per square centimeter of bone. Bone Mineral Density (or BMD) is used in clinical medicine as an indirect indicator of OSTEOPOROSIS and FRACTURE RISK. Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is measured by a procedure called “Densitometry”, often performed in

comprises khir made from milk and rice, fresh fruit juice, lemon sherbet, other fluids that are unctuous and sweet. These provide strength along with a pleasing satisfaction. Try out juices of grapes, watermelon, banana, jack fruit, lemon and pineapple during summer. Consumption of fruits and juices reduces body heat. Get plenty of sleep and eat light, nutritious, and non-fatty meals. Summer Skin Care: Changes in season affect our skin a lot and our skin becomes dull and rough. We need to do special care of our skin with changes in season. Use sunscreen or sun block everyday. Don’t skip the moisturizer, applying alcohol-free deodorants and getting pedicures done once in two weeks. Going on a summer vacation? There are no guarantees, of course, but a few simple steps can help you avoid medical mishaps while you’re away from home. Stay a safe distance away from diving boards, platforms, and floats. Learn to swim and dive well enough so that you can survive in the water in an emergency. Be careful about Insect Bites and Stings, Keep food covered as much as possible when outdoors, and avoid brightly coloured clothing. Eat and drink in moderation (especially alcohol ) the night before a trip Summer hare care: Protect your hair by following these steps routinely - Letting your hair down might just be one of the things you shouldn’t do in the summers. Wear hats or scarves whenever possible, Wet your hair down before swimming, Drink plenty of water, Keep your hair knotted or wear buns or plats, Limit your use of “hot” items on your hair such as a blow dryers and curling irons and Try washing your hair less often. From this your hair will stay looking fabulous, shiny, healthy, vibrant, and damage-free. Summer dress: Dress in light, loose, cotton clothing. Widebrimmed hats help keep you cool as well. Summer eye care: Restful sleep for six to eight hours, Wear dark glasses, while driving motorcycle, always wears protective eyeglasses. - Editor

Skin and summer How to overcome problems?

wrinkling or some skin cancers also. There are about 40 human diseases that are either caused or aggravated by sunlight. Thus when we talk of “Suncare”, we mean protection against the immediate and long term side effects of UV A and UV B. A word of caution. Ozone is present in the stratospheric layer of the environment, existing approximately 15-35 kilometers above the surface of the earth. Because of the depletion of the ozone layer by industrial wastes, pesticides etc. it leads to increased UV rays entering the earth and causing more disorders especially skin cancers. Certain factors increase the deleterious effects of UV rays. Dark scanty clothing, outdoor jobs, high altitude, outdoor recreational activity, visits to “sunny” places cigarette smoking all lead to increase damage by the sunlight. Certain atmospheric factors like heat, wind humidity pollutants, cloud cover, summer season, time of the day (Between 10 am-3 pm, the UV rays enter the earth nmore) all worsen sunlight damage on the skin.

ultraviolet rays, visible rays and infrared rays. The UV radiation comprises approximately 5 percent of terrestrial solar radiation which have a wavelength of 200-400 nm. It is these ultraviolet rays which are responsible for all the skin problems that the man suffers from. This is further subdivided into UV A(320400nm); UV B(280-320nm) and UV C (200-280nm). Of these, UV C is absorbed byb the ozone layer. Only UV A and UV B reach the skin surface. Of these UV A comprises 95-98% and UV B 2-5 percent. It is these two fractions, which are mainly responsible for all the sunlight related problems. They act on collagen. Elastin and other proteins present on the skin and induce damage to the skin. The damage caused by the UV rays can be seen immediately as in sunburn , sun tanning or certain allergic disorders. The consequences of long term Summer - people exposure can also manifest are worried like premature ageing, about their skin developing tanning, becoming dark and developing rashes which are trouble some. The main culprit in all these problems is the sunlight. It is important we understand why sunlight causes the problems and how we can overcome it.

activities the prevalence of sunlight-induced disorders is increasing.

‹‹Principles of protection: To avoid or minimize harmful effects occurring due to sun exposure, certain protective measures can be adopted: ªªAvoid going out in sunlight between 10 am and 3 pm, the period when UV rays are at its maximum intensity. This also applies during rainy season. ªªClothing should be tightly woven, light coloured. White cloth, loosely fitting, which cover maximum area of body surface. Eg. Kurta, pyjama, salwar, full sleeve shirts, long pants etc. ªªUse of wide brimmed hats, gloves and broad sun glasses. ªª Protection with umbrella is also very effectiuve when there is no availability of shade. ªª Adequate and proper use of sunscreens applied 20 minutes before going out in sunlight helps minimize sunlight damages. A sunscreen with Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 15 is ideally recommended for sun protection. A good sunscreen is one which should block UV A and UV B and also water resistant (i.e SPF of a sunscreen stays unchanged after 40 minutes of contact with water). This is useful especially for outdoor workers like agriculture workers, salesman, and outdoor personnel. A liberal quantity (2 mg/cm) appeared evenly all over the face will alter protection for 4 hours. Very rarely sunscreens itself can induce allergic reactions because of its chemical nature and other ingredients. To conclude, though sunlight is protective and nourishes the skin, the harmful effects of sunlight exposure cannot be ignored. Effective protection will help prevent a large number of skin problems and thus minimize the cost of treatment. Patients are advised to consult dermatologists if they do not improve or develop skin problems, at the earliest.

Certain drugs especially pain killers, antibiotics, drugs used in BP control are also known to interact with sunlight and cause harmful effect on the skin. Certain cosmetics like soaps, perfumes and other facial cosmetics can induce skin allergies on exposure to sunlight. Also contact with certain plants are also known to worsen skin problems. In our country because of its geographical variants like mountains, deserts as well as sea, rivers, lakes etc, offers vast areas for reflection of sunrays, thus act as indirect source for UV radiation. Coupled with fascination for outdoor sports and recreational

Also a pap smear is taken which is the surface scarping of mouth of the womb with a wooden or plastic spatula and sent for microscopy. It is mainly a screening test which helps to detect suspicious changes in the neck of the womb. Further tests are necessary for confirmation when the Pap test is abnormal. In western countries women undergo this test periodically. O

ften fat is considered as unwanted baggage but the truth is that fat is a very active tissue, useful to body. But the problem arises when it gets unhealthy, called as lipodystrophy. This is the reason why we do not lose the bulges despite vigorous work outs or diets. For those of us who don’t opt for surgery or injections, Dr Keerthi Patel & Dr Sangeetha patel of Inxs anti aging & anti obesity clinic (1998) have introduced fat reduction technology called Lipocryo from France. Let us know more about the technology.

Freeze your fat

‹‹ What is lipocryo?

A breakthrough in medical technology

Cryo- means to freeze & lipo means fat & hence in this technology fat is frozen & eliminated by the body by process called as apoptosis. This technique allows the reduction of fat cells in size & number.

‹‹ What are features of lipocryo?

The best part of lipocryo is the safety factor as it is very superficial & devoid of any side effects except for transient redness. However it can eliminate fat cells by 2cm to 6 cm deeper. Hence, lipocryo is often compared to mini liposuction results; it also tightens the skin & hence gives better shaping & skin quality. Who is an ideal candidate? Any healthy person with fat bulges that are not responding to diet & exercise is an ideal candidate. Hyper-lipodystrophy responds very well to lipocryo. Abdomen, love handles, bra back, arms all of them respond very well.

‹‹ When do we see results and changes?

Ideally results start showing by the end of 1 month & in larger areas by 3 months. Healthy food habits & exercises often double the results. One may need 1-3 sessions to see effective change.

‹‹ What are the other services at Inxs?

Inxs performs genetic diagnosis, anti aging pill, body sculpting injections, oral drops for weight loss & face

EGG FREEZING & IVF IN CANCER PATIENTS

W

hen a young woman is diagnosed with cancer, the rush to treatment is immediate. Sometimes the patient is aware her fertility could be affected, but is so overwhelmed and exhausted that she puts the “fertility issue” aside. With the advances in technology, pregnancy can be achieved with women’s own egg & IVF. Egg freezing is a form of fertility preservation available to young women diagnosed with cancer, or other serious medical condition, that requires treatment such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy which may harm her ovaries & damage her future fertility. IVF techniques are used to stimulate the ovaries & then retrieve, freeze & store eggs for possible future attempts to conceive, if the woman’s fertility & the quality of her eggs are reduced as a result of cancer therapy. Patients who are candidates for egg freezing are those young women recently diagnosed with cancer. Since most cancer treatments involve radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of both, ovarian function is often compromised rendering the patient infertile. It is important that the patient be offered egg freezing as soon as possible after her cancer diagnosis so that there is time to proceed with egg collection and freezing prior to the initiation of cancer treatments. In addition, patients with non-malignant diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, may be on chronic medications that are detrimental to oocyte function. Such

Gynecologic problems

patients may also benefit from oocyte cryopreservation. Egg freezing using either the slow freeze method or vitrification is a comparatively recent development in fertility treatment & fertility preservation. As with any medical procedures, egg freezing treatment carries some risks. Egg collection procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia & is classed as low risk procedure. A woman has to take ovarian stimulation drugs with a small risk of hyperstimulation. Egg freezing gives reassurance for motherhood to young women suffering from cancer. Eggs are stored until the patient wishes to try to conceive. Currently eggs may be stored for a maximum of 10 years, although this period may be extended if the women become prematurely infertile due to any reason, in which case they can be stored for 55 years from the date they were stored. Hundreds of babies have been born worldwide using both methods of egg freezing but as with all treatment; no clinic can guarantee that the procedure will result in a successful pregnancy or live birth. Research suggests that the risks of miscarriage, fetal abnormality or birth defects are no higher than IVF or ICSI. So egg freezing for the cancer patients gives a new ray of hope for future fertility.

What is swine flu?

¾¾

Why is swine flu affecting humans?

¾¾

Which people are most vulnerable from swine

Swine influenza is a disease in pigs. The virus currently transmitting among people is now generally referred to as swine flu, although the origin of the disease is still under investigation. There is no evidence of this strain of the disease circulating in pigs in the UK. There are regular outbreaks of swine influenza in pigs worldwide. It does not normally infect humans, although this occasionally does occur - usually in people who have had close contact with pigs. Swine influenza viruses are usually of the H1N1 subtype. The swine flu that has spread to humans is a version of this virus. Because the swine flu virus has mutated (changed) and is now able to infect humans and transmit between them.

Many severe cases of swine flu have occurred in people with underlying chronic conditions, including asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders and obesity Also, pregnant women may have an increased risk of complications from swine flu, especially in the second and third trimester. Finally, older and frail people are more likely to develop complications from swine flu and are generally less able to fight it off.

¾¾

How is swine flu infection diagnosed?

¾¾

Is the new swine flu virus contagious?

Swine flu infection is confirmed when the person has a positive swab test result, after being assessed by their GP. But the NHS is now moving away from the laboratory confirmation of all cases to clinical diagnosis of some cases. This means that people who have been in close contact with a confirmed case and who have flu-like symptoms may be clinically diagnosed as having swine flu without the need for a swab test.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) says the new swine flu virus is highly contagious and is spreading from person to person.

AYURPHARMA

12

MAY

Swine flu spreads in the same way as ordinary colds and flu. The virus is spread through the droplets that come out of the nose or mouth when someone coughs or sneezes. If someone coughs or sneezes and they do not cover it, those droplets can spread about one metre (3ft). If you are very close to the person you might breathe them in. Or, if someone coughs or sneezes into their hand, those droplets and the virus within them are easily transferred to surfaces that the person touches, such as door handles, hand rails, telephones and keyboards. If you touch these surfaces and touch your face, the virus can enter your system, and you can become infected.

¾¾

How long does the virus live on surfaces?

¾¾

When are people most infectious?

reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

¾¾

¾¾

I was on a flight where someone may have had swine flu - am I at risk?

Close contact with an infected person increases the risk of catching swine flu. Close contact is defined as being exposed to a probable or confirmed case within the previous seven days for longer than an hour, and within a distance of one metre or less.

The flu virus can live on a hard surface for up to 24 hours, and a soft surface for around 20 minutes.

How does swine flu cause death?

¾¾

What can I do?

You can reduce, but not eliminate, the risk of catching or spreading swine flu by: ªª Always covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. ªª Disposing of dirty tissues promptly and carefully. ªª Maintaining good basic hygiene, for example washing hands frequently with soap and warm water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to face, or to other people. ªª Cleaning hard surfaces, such as door handles, frequently using a normal cleaning product.

¾¾

Should I avoid contact with people suspected of having swine flu?

All suspected cases who have swine flu symptoms will have been asked to self-isolate at home and restrict their contact with people. The vast majority of people should go about their normal activities, including going to school or work. This includes children who attend a school with a confirmed case of swine flu. There is no need on risk grounds to avoid contact with people who might simply have come into contact with those having the illness, such as the parents of children at schools with a confirmed case but who are not themselves ill.

¾¾

Who should be wearing a facemask?

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) recommends that healthcare workers should wear a facemask if they come into close contact with a person with symptoms (within one metre) to reduce their risk of catching the virus from patients. However, the HPA does not recommend that healthy people wear facemasks to go about their everyday business. Facemasks must be changed regularly as they are less effective when dampened by a person’s breath. People may infect themselves if they touch the outer

What are the symptoms of swine flu?

The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal flu and include fever, fatigue, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu have also

Like any other type of flu, people can die from swine flu if they develop complications, like pneumonia.

People are most infectious to others soon after they develop symptoms, although they continue to shed the virus (for example, in coughs and sneezes) for up to five days (seven days in children). People become less infectious as their symptoms subside, and once their symptoms are gone, they are no longer considered infectious to others.

¾¾

How long are symptoms expected to last?

As with any sort of influenza, the severity and duration of symptoms will vary depending on treatment and individual circumstances. Most cases reported in the UK to date have been relatively mild, with those affected starting to recover within a week.

Antibiotics will be used to treat people in the community if they develop complications. In hospitals, antibiotics will be used to treat the sickest patients and may reduce the length of hospitalisation.

¾¾

Does swine flu pose special risks in pregnant women?

During pregnancy, you may have an increased risk of complications from any type of flu, especially in the second and third trimester.

¾¾

Can I take antiviral drugs if I am pregnant?

Yes, on the advice of a doctor. The Department of Health has purchased Relenza, an inhaled antiviral drug that treats flu without reaching the developing fetus. An expert group reviewed the risk of antiviral treatment in pregnancy, which is extremely small - much smaller than the risk posed by the symptoms of swine flu.

surface of their mask, or may infect others by not disposing of old masks safely. Finally, wearing a facemask may encourage complacency. People need to focus on good hand hygiene, staying at home if they are feeling unwell, and covering their mouth when they cough or sneeze.

¾¾

¾¾

What should I do if I think I’m infected?

If you have flu-like symptoms and are concerned because you think you have been in contact with someone who may have swine flu: Stay at home. And consult doctor

¾¾

¾¾

What advice are you giving to people with flu who want to travel by plane?

The Health Protection Agency is advising anyone in the UK who is symptomatic not to travel until they are no longer infectious. Similarly, any British nationals abroad with flu who want to fly home should only travel when they are no longer infectious.

Is swine flu treatable?

Testing has shown that the swine flu can be treated with the antiviral medicines oseltamavir (brand name Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza). However, the drugs must be administered at an early stage to be effective.

¾¾

Is it safe to use public transport now we are in a pandemic?

¾¾

Is one of the antivirals more appropriate for pregnant women and people with certain kidney conditions?

Yes. Public transport has not been closed during previous pandemics, and while there is a small additional risk to the public, this is no greater than using other public places. Anyone who has the flu or feels unwell should stay at home and not travel.

Relenza is an inhaled drug that will be used for pregnant women and people with certain kidney conditions who are unable to take Tamiflu. See more on pregnancy below.

¾¾

¾¾

What should I do if I become ill on holiday or on the flight home?

Does Tamiflu go out of date?

The government has a programme to replace any expired doses under a ‘rolling stock’ system.

If you experience flu-like symptoms during a stay in a country affected by swine flu, contact a health professional and tell them your symptoms. If you become ill on your flight home, alert the cabin crew to your symptoms. There are procedures in place for dealing with passengers who become unwell on flights, and the airline will advise port health officials on the ground that a passenger requires a health assessment and may need treatment.

¾¾

Why does it take several months to produce a swine flu vaccine?

The flu vaccine production process is long and complicated. Production technology is labourintensive. The government’s plans include two manufacturers, thus maximising chances of early development.

¾¾

Why do you need antibiotics in a pandemic?

¾¾

While antivirals may reduce the number of complications, there are still likely to be significant numbers of complications occurring in the pandemic. Some of the most common include bacterial infections in the respiratory tract and lungs, such as pneumonia. Antibiotics are needed to treat such complications.

AYURPHARMA

What advice are you giving to travellers?

Before travelling, they should check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) website for information specific to the country they are visiting.

Is it safe to eat pig meat?

Yes. The WHO says there is no evidence that swine flu can be transmitted through eating meat from infected animals. However, it is essential to cook meat properly. A temperature of 70°C (158°F) would be sure to kill the virus. Pig meat includes pork, bacon, and ham and pork products.

What is Cervical Cancer?

¾¾

How does one get Cervical Cancer?

¾¾

Who is likely to get Cervical Cancer?

Cervical Cancer is a cancer of the Cervix. The Cervix is located at the entrance of the uterus and prevents infections from reaching the uterus. This cancer is not hereditary. Cervical Cancer is caused by infection with a virus- the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) -which infects the Cervix. The virus is common and is transmitted through contact of the genital area. Not all HPV infections cause cancer, and although most of them clear naturally, some can lead to cancer. Younger women are at the highest risk of acquiring an HPV infection that might lead to Cervical Cancer in the future. However, every woman is at risk of Cervical Cancer, regardless of her age. That is why, it is best to protect girls as early as possible.

¾¾

How is Cervical Cancer detected?

Cervical Cancer generally shows no symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage. Screening tests (e.g. Pap smear) can detect early signs of the infection that causes Cervical Cancer. However, screening cannot prevent the HPV infection from happening in the first place.

‹‹ Act today

Ask your doctor for protection against cervical cancer. ªª Protection is now possible against Cervical Cancer. Vaccination along with screening offers the best possible protection against Cervical Cancer ªª Who should get vaccinated? Vaccination is best given as early as possible in adolescent girls as this is when the best immune response to vaccination is achieved However, since all women remain at risk of Cervical Cancer, ask your doctor if Vaccination is suitable for you too. ªª How is vaccination given? Vaccination is given as 3 injections over a 6 month period.

Techniques to Help U Relax oday’s fast – paced lifestyles force us to push our minds and bodies to the limit, usually at the expense of our physical and mental well – being . When we become stressed, our bodies switch to a mode called the ‘fight or flight response’, which is characterized by increased heart rate, blood pressure, higher breathing rate, etc. Over time, these reactions increase cholesterol levels, disturb intestinal activities, depress the immune system, and leave us feeling ‘stressed out.’ “Relaxation techniques are great tools for dealing with stress and promoting long – term health by slowing down the body and calming the mind,” says Hyderabad – based relaxation and wellness training consultant. “Used daily, these techniques can lead to a healthier outlook towards stressful situations and a decline in stress – related disorders such as anxiety, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, insomnia, etc.” Here are some techniques you might want to consider: ¾¾ Deep breathing: A simple but effective method of relaxation. “It works well in conjunction with other relaxation techniques such as Progressive Muscular Relaxation, imagery and meditation for reducing stress,” . Here’s how to do it: ªª Inhale. Close your mouth, loosen your shoulders, and inhale as slowly and deeply as you can. ªª Hold. Keep the air in your lungs as you slowly count to 6. ªª Exhale. Release the air through your mouth, again slowly counting to 6. ªª Repeat. Go over the inhale – hold – exhale cycle 5 to 10 times.

T

 Progressive Muscular MAY

Relaxation (P M R): This is good for relaxing your body, especially when your muscles are tense. It requires slowly tensing and then releasing every muscle group individually, from the toes all the way up to the face. “It is useful for calming nerves before an important presentation or performance, and for quieting down when you are highly stressed,” .

 Meditation: Meditation creates new, healthy vibrations in all the cells of the body and removes any kind of disease. All the tissues are bathed in the nectar that flows during meditation. All germs that cause diseases are destroyed. “The concept behind meditation is to consciously relax your body and focus your thought processes on one particular thing for a prolonged period. Your mind thus remains occupied and diverted from issues causing you stress,” . Follow these steps:

ªª Sit comfortable and quietly. ªª Close your eyes. ªª Relax your body muscles (you can use a technique like Progressive Muscular Relaxation for this).

ªª Focus on your breathing. ªª Breathe in deeply, then exhale. Count your breaths (gives you something to do with your mind, helping avoid distraction). ªª Repeat this for 10 or 15 minutes.

Self – hypnosis: “This is when you hypnotize yourself. Affirmations are often used – positive statements we repeat to ourselves to counter stress and unpleasant thoughts. An example of an affirmation is ‘I feel vibrant and alive. I love how I feel’,”. Sit down at a quiet, comfortable place. Relax your body. Imagine waves of relaxation running down your

body from your head downwards, washing away stress. Feel the muscles in your body relaxing as waves of relaxation wash over them. Next, utilize suggestion to deepen the state of relaxation. You can do this by simply saying to yourself : ‘I am tired and sleepy. I can feel my arms and legs getting heavier. I am becoming more and more tired’ Once you feel completely relaxed, add the affirmations you have prepare too.

 Yoga: If you have tried it, you already know that it can help you achieve your goals with more focus and renewed spirit. “Yogic breathing reduces blood pressure and brings intense relaxation. Furthermore, it gives you improved appearance via better posture, muscle and skin – tone , if practiced regularly. Bones and muscles are strengthened and joints become more flexible. It is also amazing to see how much more positive a person’s outlook on life becomes within just a few months of practice,”. If the mind is kept cool and calm at all times, you will have wonderful health, strength and vitality. Let any disease remain in your body. Do not bother too much. Develop the powers of endurance and resistance. Strengthen your body, mind and nerves. Take plenty of open – air exercises, substantial nutritious food, medicated oil bath and plenty of rest. Be moderate in food, drink and enjoyments. Lead a spiritual life. All diseases will leave your body by themselves. Do not go to the doctors very often unless emergency. Endeavour to qualify yourself as your own doctor. Understand the laws of nature and the principles of hygiene and health.

instance, imagining sounds of running water and birds, the smell of cut grass, etc. Use the imagined place as a peaceful retreat from stress and pressure,” .

 Listening to Music or Relaxation tapes: Another approach is listening to

calming music or relaxation tapes. Soothing music has a lot of power to influence your thoughts and feelings. “It takes no effort from your side to listen to these. Moreover, they can be very welcome at the end of a long day”. With continued practice in the techniques enumerated above, you may experience renewed energy, better concentration, better ability to deal with problems, more efficiency in daily activities, less indigestion, headaches, nausea, and less frequent emotional responses like anger, anxiety, crying, anxiety, apprehension and frustration.

 Exercise: Regular, active exercising during the day and mild exercise at bedtime enhances the quantity and the quality of relaxation. Exercise stimulates the elimination of lactic acid from the body which correlates with stress and muscular tension. Regular exercise also produces hormonal changes which are beneficial to the body and to the sleep pattern. Walking, jogging, skipping, swimming are all ideal exercises. Vigorous exercise should, however, be avoided at night as this can be over stimulating.

 Imagery: You may have noticed how particular environments can be very relaxing, while others can be extremely stressful. This is the idea behind the use of imagery in stress reduction. “You use your imagination to recreate a scene, place or event that you recall as being relaxing, safe, peaceful, beautiful and happy. You can bring all your senses into the image by, for

Y

oga is an Ancient Indian science which includes the practice of specific postures, breathing and meditation and is a fast advancing therapeutic tool in physical, psychological and psychosomatic disorders. Since a quite longtime, it has been recognized that the mantras have beneficial effects on human beings and even plants. Scriptures has a vast description of these mantras such as om mantra, gayatri mantra and mrityunjaya mantra etc quoting that these mantras will benefit the humans in keeping their good health by warding off the mental stress and the physical ailments. There are also many research studies showing that the mantras have significant effect on our health and even on plants. For instance, Agnihotra mantra chanting has shown its effect on the germination of rice seeds. Mantra yoga shows how sounds impact the nervous

Mantra yoga can take our yoga or meditation practice to a higher level. Mantra is a key to yoga in the deeper sense and to awaken a higher intelligence within us. The mind is like a mirror, which reflects the essential nature of the individual. Mind is the biggest problem and also the solution to all problems. Psychology was developed as a separate branch of knowledge only to study the mind. Mind is also the interface between individual’s internal and external worlds. Mantras play an important role in influencing the mind and keeping away the distractions and inturn the disorders. The term mantra is composed of two words man and tantra where, man is the manas or mind and tra is the tool and hence mantra becomes tool for the mind. In Sanskrit, mantra is defined as mananaat traayate iti mantrah that is the repetition of any akshara or an

alphabet, which has origin from Vedas and tantras. Among the the Vedas, Rigveda primarily involves the teaching of mantras like gayatri mantra which is practiced to invoke the sungod and the cosmic powers for their blessings. Mantras are also said as the combination of grouping of the sound vibrations. It is a tool for connecting us with the spiritual wisdom and the most important tool for attuning our bodies and minds to their proper resonance. It is considered as a vehicle for expansion of the mind, liberation of energy and also one of the easiest of yogic practices to perform unlike asana or pranayama that most people find difficult to do. Its not only an important preparation for meditation, but mantra meditation is one of the main types of meditation with many variations.

¾¾

Methods of Mantra chanting

Mantras can be chanted in 3 ways such as 1. Vaikhari chanting- chanting the mantra louder or the one which is audible. 2. Upanshu chanting- chanting in low voice or just whispering with the movements of lips or the tongue. 3. Manasika chanting- this is one of the subtle form of chanting commonly used by advance practitioners to achieve the higher state of awareness. This is silently chanted in the mind with no movements of the lips or the tongue. When the sound or mantra is produced in these 3 different forms, it results in production of different types of waves. When the mantra is chanted louder or in a whisper, it creates a standing wave and when the same is chanted silently mentally, it produces a resonant wave. Practise of Mantra chanting

In todays world, chanting or doing a bhajan has become the most important and rapidly growing practice. Even the bhajans are based upon the repetition of mantric sounds, names or phrases. It is found that the modern day yoga guru’s also give importance to mantra, where the mantra om has become the main word and sound of yoga. For instance, the transcendental meditation for decades has promoted the mantra meditation as its main technique and found significant reduction in blood pressure, stress etc disorders. It is observed that being happy while chanting the mantras will be more effective in producing the results. Mantras can be practiced by fixing the mind either on the nosetip, navel, center of the heart, eyebrow center or even the sahasrara chakra. Each one of us has a unique sound pattern that sustains all that we do and allows our energies to move and grow or stagnate and decline. Some of the important mantras are Aham Brahmaasmi, Tattvamasi, Gayatri mantra, Maha mrityunjaya mantra

etc.

¾¾Advantages of Mantra chanting ªª According to a study, it

ªª ªª ªª

is observed that the mantra affects subconscious mind, where the positive impressions can be programmed and the negative impressions can be removed. ªª Chanting of the mantra increases concentration, memory, logical thinking and has a soothing effect on nervous system, helps relax the muscles and can be effectively used to reduce the stress and its effects. Mantra improves the psychological status of the mind in a positive way. Helps in controlling the emotions such as fears, desires, jealousy and maintains the stability of mind. It serves as a link to our individual intelligence with the greater intelligence that pervades all space, extending our awareness into the infinite and eternal. Asanas performed with repetition of the appropriate mantras bring a greater energy and awareness into the bones, muscles, joints, nerves and helps us to transcend body consciousness. Apart from the above, in the study of stigsby et al, it is observed that the mantra meditation showed modest reductions in blood pressure. Telles et al has showed the reduction in heart rate and rate of breathing by OM meditation. There are also other studies (Anuprita et al, Bali et al) which has shown the effectiveness of mantra in reducing back pain, neck pain and the stress associated through mind sound resonance relaxation technique which includes the maha mrityunjaya mantra.

‹‹ Relevance of Mantra yoga in today’s world

The concept of yoga previously understood only as asana or the posture, now has expanded the thinking and has created awareness as a science including asanas, pranayama etc and not just the asanas. In this process, a new popular usage of mantras is arising. Just as each asana puts the body into an energetic posture in which higher forces can be released, so too each mantra puts the mind into a certain pose in which it can become a conduit for a higher flow of energy and grace. Each mantra like asana has its intention, form and means of adaptation. Much like each asana, each mantra has its signature energy that brings about a specific effect upon the mind and can be understood according to its sound, meaning and application. As asana is a key to the flexibility of the body, the right use of mantra is the key to the flexibility of the mind. In todays world, mantra chanting or bhajans is another importance practice, which is rapidly growing in popular, which the bhajans is the other face of mantra.

Eat foods rich in betacarotenes: they can cut your risk of a stroke by 40% . Foods rich in betacarotenes include carrots, cabbage, winter squash, sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens, apricots, and seaweed. Eat garlic: Study after study has confirmed garlic’s abilities to lower blood pressure, reduce phospholipids and cholesterol, strengthen heart action, increase immune response, reduce platelet clumping and clotting (thus reducing strokes) and stabilize blood sugar levels. Eat garlic raw or lightly cooked, several cloves a day. Eat foods rich in essential fatty acids: Fresh pressed oils of wheat germ or flax seed are especially nourishing. Drink lemon tea. It is so strengthening to the heart that there’s an old saying about it: “Those who drink lemon balm tea daily will live forever!” Make lemon balm vinegar to use on your salads. Avoid restrictive diets. Frequent dieting, fasting, binging and purging imbalance your electrolyte levels, causing weakening of the heart muscle and damage to the heart. Eat as much as you want of: whole grains, vegetables, beans, greens, fruits, fish, seeds, and yogurt. Go easy on: nuts, cheese, and milk. Eat raw vegetables: particularly broccoli and cauliflower because of their high fiber content. Eating simple carbohydrates doesn’t make us feel as full as eating fat, so if you are overzealous in avoiding fats you may overindulge in total calories. When snacking, stick with carbs that contain vitamins and fiber (e.g., apples) Consider healthy fat sources including walnuts and almonds. Choose fish over red meat. Include fish in your year-end celebration menus. Cold-water fish contain protective omega- 3s, which have been shown to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death. Whatever meat you choose, have the gravy or

vegetable, the more heart-protective antioxidants contained within. Steaming is better than using the microwave for preserving nutrients. However, over boiling will remove many of these heart healthy elements. ªª Cut down on salt. Too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Avoid foods like crisps, salted nuts, canned and packet soups and sauces, baked beans and canned vegetables, pork pies, pizzas and ready meals. Many breakfast cereals and breads that appear healthy also contain high levels of salt, so keep your eye on these too. To help lower high blood pressure, watch your salt intake. It may be disguised in food labels as sodium alginate, sodium sulfite, sodium caseinate, disodium phosphate, sodium benzoate, sodium hydroxide, monosodium glutamate (MSG) and sodium citrate. ªª Watch your diet, A healthy diet can help to reduce the risk of developing heart disease, and can also help increase the chances of survival after a heart attack. You should try to have a balanced diet, containing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, oily fish, starchy foods such as whole grain bread, pasta and rice. Avoid foods like biscuits, cakes, pastries and dairy products that are high in saturated fats and sugar. ªª Eat right to control cholesterol. Eating foods high in saturated fat can lead to high cholesterol. To help keep your cholesterol levels down, eat foods low in saturated fat, such as lean chicken or turkey (roasted or baked, with skin removed), fruits and veggies, low-fat or fat-free dairy products and whole grains. ªª Take some water when you go out. It’ll keep you hydrated ªª Out of sight is out of mouth. Keep packages of unhealthy food hidden in the pantry. Put raw veggies and fruits in front in the refrigerator and healthy snacks in the front of the pantry, so that’s what you see first. If you keep grabbing healthy foods for a minimum of 21 times, it will soon become a habit.

Vitamins in Health and Disease he word ‘ Vitamine’ meaning a vital amine was proposed by a Polish Researcher, Dr. Cacimir Funk, in 1911 to designate a new food substance which cured beriberi. Other terms were proposed as new factors were discovered. But the word vitamin, with the final ‘e’ dropped, met with popular favour. Vitamins are potent organic compounds which are found in small concentrations in foods. They perform specific and vital functions in the body chemistry. They are like electric sparks which help to run human motors. Except for a few exceptions, they cannot be manufactured or synthesized by the organism and their absence or improper absorption results in specific deficiency disease. It is not possible to sustain life without all the essential vitamins. In their natural state they are found in minute quantities in organic foods. We must obtain them from these foods or in dietary supplements. Vitamins, which are of several kinds, differ from each other in physiological function, in chemical structure and in their distribution in food. They are broadly divided into two categories, namely, fat – soluble and water – soluble. Vitamins A, D, E and K are all soluble in fat and fat solvents and are therefore, known as fat – soluble. They are not easily lost by ordinary cooking methods and they can be stored in the body to some extent, mostly

in the liver. They are measured in international units. Vitamin B Complex and C are water soluble. They are dissolved easily in cooking water. A portion of these vitamins may actually be destroyed by heating. They cannot be stored in body and hence they have to be taken daily in foods. Any extra quantity taken in any one day is eliminated as waste. Their values are given in milligrams and micrograms, whichever is appropriate. Vitamins, used therapeutically, can be of immense help in fighting disease and speeding recovery. They can be used in two ways, namely, correcting deficiencies and treating disease in place of drugs. Latest researches indicate that many vitamins taken in large doses far above the actual nutritional needs, can have a miraculous healing effect in a wide range of common complaints and illnesses. Vitamin therapy has a distinct advantage over drug therapy. While drugs are always toxic and have many undesirable side effects, vitamins, as a rule are non – toxic and safe. The various functions of common vitamins, their deficiency symptoms, natural sources, daily requirements and their therapeutic uses are discussed in brief as follows : ªª Vitamin A: Known as anti – ophthalmic , vitamin

life expectancy and extends youthfulness. The main sources of this vitamin are fish liver oil, liver, whole milk, curds, pure ghee, butter, cheese, cream and egg yolk, green leafy and certain yellow root vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, turnip, beets, carrot, cabbage and tomato and ripe fruits such as prunes, mangoes, papaya, apricots, peaches, almonds and other dry fruits. A prolonged deficiency of vitamin A may result in inflammation of the eyes, poor vision frequent colds, night blindness and increased susceptibility to infections, lack of appetite and vigour, defective teeth and gums and skin disorders. The recommended daily allowance of vitamin A is 5,000 international units for adults and 2,600 to 4,000 international units for children. When taken in large therapeutic doses, which are usually 25,000 to 50,000 units a day, it is highly beneficial in the treatment of head and chest colds, sinus trouble, influenza and other infectious diseases. It is also valuable in curing night blindness and other eye diseases as well as many stubborn skin disorders. B Complex Vitamins: There are a large variety of vitamins in the B group, the more important being B1 or thiamine, B2 or riboflavin, B3 or niacin or nicotinic acid, B6 or pyridoxine, B9 or folic acid, B12 and B5 or pantothenic acid. B vitamins are synergistic. They are more potent together than when used separately. Thiamine: Known as anti – beriberi, anti – neurotic and anti – ageing vitamin, thiamine plays an important role in the normal functioning of the nervous system, the regulation of carbohydrates and good digestion. It protects heart muscle, stimulates brain action and helps prevent constipation. It has a mild diuretic effect. Valuable sources of this vitamin are wheat germ, yeast, the outer layer of whole grains, cereals, pulses, nuts, peas, legumes, dark green leafy vegetables, milk , egg, banana and apple. The deficiency of thiamine can cause serious impairment of the digestive system and chronic constipation, loss of weight, diabetes, mental depression, nervous exhaustion and weakness of the heart. The recommended daily allowance for this vitamin is about two milligrams for adults and 1.2 mg for children. The need for this vitamin increases during illness, stress and surgery as well as during pregnancy and lactation. When taken in a large quantity, say up to 50 mg, it is beneficial in the treatment of digestive disorders, neuritis and other nervous troubles as well as mental depression. Riboflavin: Vitamin B2 or riboflavin, also known as vitamin G, is essential for growth and general health as also for healthy eyes, skin, nails and hair. It helps eliminate sore mouth, lips and tongue. It also functions with other substances to metabolise carbohydrates, fats, and protein. The main sources of this vitamin are green leafy vegetables, milk, cheese, wheat germ, egg, almonds, sunflower, seeds, citrus fruits and tomatoes. Its deficiency can cause a burning sensation in the legs, lips and tongue, oily skin, premature wrinkles on face and arm and eczema. The recommended daily allowance for this vitamin is 1.6 to 2.6 mg for adults and 0.6 to 1 mg for children. Its use in larger quantities, say

from 25 to 50 mg is beneficial in the treatment of nutritional cataracts and other eye ailments, digestive disturbances, nervous depression, general debility, and certain types of high blood pressure. Niacin: Vitamin B3 or niacin or nicotinic acid is essential for proper circulation, healthy functioning of the nervous system and proper protein and carbohydrate metabolism. It is essential for synthesis of sex hormones, cortisone, thyroxin and insulin. It is contained in liver, fish, poultry, peanut, whole wheat, green leafy vegetables, dates, figs, prunes and tomato. A deficiency can lead to skin eruptions, frequent stools, mental depression, insomnia, chronic headaches, digestives disorders and anaemia. The recommended daily allowance is 12 to 20 mg. For adults and 4.8 to 12 mg for children. Large doses of this vitamin say up to 100 mg with each meal, preferably together with other B group vitamins, affords relief in case of migraine and high blood pressure caused by nervousness, high cholesterol and arteriosclerosis. Pyridoxine: Vitamin B6 or pyridoxine is actually a group of substance – pyridoxine, pyridoxinal and pyridoxamine – that are closely related and function together. It helps in the absorption of fats and proteins, prevents nervous and skin disorders and protects against degenerative diseases. The main sources of this vitamin are yeast, wheat, bran, wheat germ, pulses, cereals, banana, walnuts, soya beans, milk, egg, liver, meat and fresh vegetables. Deficiency can lead to dermatitis, conjunctivitis, anaemia, depression, skin disorders, nervousness, insomnia, migraine headaches and heart diseases. The recommended daily requirement is 2.0 mg for adults and 0.2 mg for children. This vitamin used therapeutically from 100 to 150 mg daily can relieve painful joints and the discomforts of pregnancy and pre – menstrual symptoms. Folic acid: Vitamin B9 or folic acid, along with vitamin B12 is necessary for the formation of red blood cells. It is essential for the growth and division of all body cells for healing processes. It aids protein metabolism and helps prevent premature greying. Valuable sources of this vitamin are deep green leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, brewer’s yeast, mushrooms , nuts, peanuts and liver. A deficiency can result in certain types of anaemia, serious skin disorders, loss of hair, impaired circulation, fatigue and mental depression. The minimum daily requirement of this vitamin is 0.4 mg. To correct anaemia and deficiencies 5 mg or more are needed daily. Some authorities believe that folic acid is contraindicated in leukaemia and cancer. Pantothenic acid: Vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid helps in cell building, maintaining normal growth and development of the central nervous system. and egg yolk. It can be synthesised in the body by intestinal bacteria. A deficiency can cause chronic fatigue, hypoglycaemia, greying and loss of hair, mental depression, stomach disorders, blood and skin disorders. The minimum daily requirement of this vitamin has not been established, but is estimated to be between 30 and 50 mg a day. The usual therapeutic doses are 50 to 200 mg. In some studies, 1,000 mg or more were given daily for six months without side effects. It is useful in the treatment of insomnia, low blood pressure and hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar. Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 or cobolamine, commonly known as “red vitamin”, is the only vitamin that contains essential mineral elements. It is essential for proper functioning of the central nervous system, production and regeneration of red blood cells and proper utilisation of fat, carbohydrates and protein for body building. It also improves concentration, memory and balance. Valuable sources of this vitamin are kidney, liver, meat, milk, eggs, bananas and peanuts. Its deficiency can lead to certain types of anaemia , poor appetite and loss of energy and mental disorders. The recommended daily allowance of this vitamin is 3 mcg. Taken in large therapeutic doses from 50 to 100 mcg, it is beneficial in the treatment of lack of concentration, fatigue, depression, insomnia and poor memory. Vitamin C: Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is essential for normal growth and the maintenance of practically all the body tissues, especially those of the joints, bones, teeth, and gums. It protects one against infections and acts as a harmless antibiotic. It promotes healing and serves as protection against all forms of stress and harmful effects of toxic chemicals. It helps prevent and cure the common cold. It also helps in decreasing blood cholesterol. This vitamin is found in citrus fruits, berries, green and leafy vegetables, tomatoes, potatoes, sprouted bengal and green grams, A deficiency can cause scurvy marked by weakness, anaemia, bleeding gums and painful and swollen parts, slow healing of sores and wounds, premature ageing and lowered resistance to all infections. The recommended daily allowance is 50 to 75 mg for adults and 30 to 50 mg for children. Smokers and older persons have

greater need for vitamin C. It is used therapeutically in huge doses from 100 to 10,000mg. a day. It prevents and cures colds and infections effectively, neutralises various toxins in the system, speeds healing processes in virtually all cases of ill health, increases sexual vitality and prevents premature ageing. ªªVitamin D: Vitamin D is necessary for proper bone and teeth formation and for the healthy functioning of the thyroid gland. It assists in the assimilation of calcium, phosphorus and other minerals from the digestive tract. This vitamin is found in the rays of the sun, fish, milk, eggs, butter and sprouted seeds. A deficiency can cause gross deformation of bones and severe tooth decay. The recommended daily allowance of this vitamin for both adults and children is 400 to 500 international units. Therapeutically, up to 4,000 to 5,000 units a day for adult or half of this for children, is a safe dose, if taken for not longer than one month. It is beneficial in the treatment of muscular fatigue, constipation and nervousness. It can be toxic if taken in excessive doses, especially for children. Signs of toxicity are unusual thirst, sore eyes, itching skin, vomiting, diarrhoea, urinary urgency, abnormal calcium deposits in blood vessel walls, liver, lungs, kidneys and stomach. ªª Vitamin E: Vitamin E is essential for normal reproductory functions, fertility and physical vigour. It prevents unsaturated fatty acids, sex hormones and fat soluble vitamins from being destroyed in the body by oxygen. It dilutes blood vessels and improves circulation. It is essential for the prevention of heart diseases, asthma, arthritis, and many other conditions. It is available in wheat or cereals germ, whole grain products, green leafy vegetables, milk, eggs, all whole, raw or sprouted seeds and nuts. Its deficiency can lead to sterility in men and repeated abortions in women, degenerative developments in the coronary system, strokes and heart disease. The official estimated requirement of this vitamin is 15 international units. Expert nutritionist estimate the actual requirement at 100 to 200 I.U. a day. The therapeutic doses are from 200 to 2400 I.U. daily. It is beneficial in the treatment of various forms of paralysis, diseases of the muscles, arteriosclerosis heart disease by diluting blood vessels. It prevents formation of scars in burns and post – operation healing. It protects against many environmental poisons in air, water and food. It also has a dramatic effect on the reproductive organs and prevents miscarriage, increases male and female fertility and helps to restore male potency. ªª Vitamin K: Vitamin K is necessary for the proper clotting of blood, prevention of bleeding and normal liver functions. It aids in reducing excessive menstrual flow. This vitamin is contained in egg yolk, cow’s milk, yogurt, alfalfa, green and leafy vegetables, spinach, cauliflower, cabbage and tomato. Its deficiency can lead to sufficient bile salts in the intestines, colitis, lowered vitality and premature ageing.

First-Time Sex on Your Wedding Night S

ome couples wait until their wedding night to have sex for the first time. Many of these people fear that sex will be painful or boring. They wonder if they’ll know what to do. And they want information on how to make first-time sex on their wedding night as pleasurable as possible. Here is a guide to making firsttime sex on your wedding night good for you and your husband or wife:

¾¾

Create the right kind of ambiance. You want the room to be romantic? Use the best bedding that you

have – from soft pillowcases to a luxurious comforter. Have flowers on hand – either a beautiful bouquet or rose petals on the bed. Dim the lights (although some people like to have the lights on – it’s a personal choice). It should be a clean and safe haven for you and your

husband or wife to experience your first time together. Besides putting you in the mood, it will also relax you. ¾¾ Wear something sexy. If you wear granny panties, you – and your husband or wife – might not be in the mood for love after seeing you. Worst of all, you might not feel confident, which will make your first far less satisfying. You should feel your personal best to enhance your pleasure and make the experience less stressful. Put on your sexiest underwear and whatever else it takes for you to feel really great about yourself. ¾¾ Stress, which is natural to have after planning a wedding and planning to have sex for the first time, might cause vaginal dryness, which can make sex more uncomfortable or painful. of hair, around menopausal age. In pattern hairloss, hairs under go shrinking or miniaturization and then progressively disappear. Even, in the most extensive cases, a horseshoe-shaped fringe of hair remains in the back of the scalp. This hair-bearing fringe is insensitive to the androgen mediated balding process and usually will last a lifetime. These hairs, when transplanted into thinning or balding areas, will take root and grow, and continue to grow for the rest of a person’s life.

‹‹ How can baldness be treated? Who can undergo hair transplantation?

Pattern hair loss of men and women (Androgenetic Alopecia) is an inherited condition caused by the normal level of androgens present in both men and women. For men (Male pattern hair loss-MPHL), permanent baldness generally follows a specific pattern which starts either in temporal areas (sides of head) or vortex (top of head). While it can also occur in women, total baldness is rare and women usually manifest only diffuse thinning

vaginal dryness. The solution? Use some sort of lubrication, such as KY jelly or any artificial lubricants, to create more moisture for friction.

¾¾

Another way to create more moisture is to spend a lot of time on foreplay. Women need to get

worked up to become naturally wet. Kissing, hugging, touching, and oral sex will help increase the moisture – and the pleasure. This also helps some people feel closer and more intimate during sex. ¾¾ Choosing the right position, at first, might make a difference in how much pain the woman feels during vaginal intercourse. When a woman is on top, she can control the level of penetration. This can cut down on the discomfort she is experiencing and has her controlling and managing her pleasure and pain. ¾¾ Breathing in and out can also help a woman who is experiencing pain, especially at the moment of initial penetration, to relax and feel better.

¾¾

If you tend to worry about keeping things neat and organized, you might want to put a towel

underneath you. Some women bleed, from their hymen breaking, and things can get messy. In fact, you might bleed for a few days or even the second or third time you have sex. It’s perfectly normal. To keep yourself clean, you might want to wear a pad or panty liner until the bleeding stops. ¾¾ Talk. Don’t be afraid to discuss your fears, wants, and needs with your husband or wife before you make love for the first time. Feeling comfortable with one another is vital to creating a good sexual rapport. ¾¾ Practice, practice, practice. Enjoy each other’s company and keep having sex even if it isn’t so great the first few times. If you care for one another and you’re both healthy, the sex will improve. But you have to have patience and learn about each other’s bodies and what pleasures both of you.

Dry eye

‹‹ Dr. K. Bhujang Shetty Managing director, Narayana Nethralaya 121/C, West of cord road, Rajajinagar R Block, Bangalore 10 Ph: 080- 23373311/66121300

‹‹ What is dry eye?

evenly over the surface of the eye and helps the eye remain moist. Without mucus, tears would not stick to the eye.

Normally, the eye constantly bathes itself in tears. By producing tears at a slow and steady rate, the eye stays moist and comfortable. Sometimes people do not produce enough tears or the appropriate quality of tears to keep their eyes healthy and comfortable. This condition is known as dry eye. The eye uses two different methods to produce tears; it can make tears at a slow, steady rate to maintain normal eye lubrication. It can also produce large quantities of tears in response to eye irritation or emotion, when a foreign body or dryness irritates the eye, or when a person cries, excessive tearing occurs.

‹‹

‹‹ What are the symptoms of dry eye?

The usual symptoms include: stinging or burning eyes; scratchiness; stringy mucus in or around the eyes; excessive eye irritation from smoke or wind; excess tearing; discomfort when wearing contact lenses. Excess tearing from “dry eye” may sound illogical, but it can be understood as the eye’s response to discomfort. If the tears responsible for maintaining lubrication do not keep the eye wet enough, the eye becomes irritated. Eye irritation prompts the gland that makes tears (called the lacrimal gland) to release a large volume of tears, overwhelming the tear drainage system. These excess tears then overflow from your eye.

‹‹ What is the tear film?

When you blink, a film of tears spreads over the eye, making the surface of the eye smooth and clear. WEith out this tear film, good vision would not be possible. The tear film consists of three layers: An oily layer; a watery layer; a layer of mucus Each layer has its own purpose. The oily layer produced by the meibomian glads, froms the outermost surface of the tear film. Its main purpose is to smooth the tear surface and reduce evaporation of tears. The middle watery layer makes up most of what we ordinarily think of as tears. This layer, produced by the lacrimal gland, cleanses the eye and washes away foreign particles or irritants. The inner layer consists of mucus produced by the conjunctiva. Mucus allows the watery layer to spread

MAY

What causes dry eye?

Tear production normally decreases as we age. Although dry eye can occur in both men and women at any age, women are most often affected. This is especially true after menopause. Dry eye can also be associated with other problems. For example, people with dry eyes, dry mouth, and arthritis are said to have Sjogren’s syndrome. A wide variety of common medications—both prescription and over-the-counter—can cause dry eye by reducing tear secretion. Be sure to tell your ophthalmologist (Eye M.D.) the names of all the medications you are taking, especially if you are using: ªª diuretics; m beta-blockers; ªª antihistamines; ªª sleeping pills; ªª medications for “nerves”; or ªª Pain relievers. Since these medications are often necessary, the dry eye condition may have to be tolerated or treated with eye drops called artificial tears. People with dry eye are often more prone to the toxic side effects of eye medications, including artificial tears. For example, the preservatives in certain eye drops and artificial tear preparations can irritate the eye. These people may need special preservative-free artificial tears.

‹‹ How is dry eye diagnosed?

An ophthalmologist is usually able to diagnose dry eye by examining the eyes. Sometimes tests that measure tear production are necessary. One test, called the Schirmer tear test, involves placing filter-paper strips under the lower eyelids to measure the rate of tear production under various conditions. Another test uses a diagnostic drop (called fluorescein or rose bengal) to look for certain patterns of dryness on the surface of the eye.

‹‹ How is dry eye treated?

Eye drops called artificial tears are similar to your own tears. They lubricate the eyes and help maintain moisture. Artificial tears are available.

...pg29 transplantation is a useful alternative. The transplanted hair is removed from back of the scalp (donor site) and transferred to the balding site (recipient site). The transferred hairs are not “rejected” as they are patient’s own hairs and are not foreign tissue. The hair in the back of the scalp is insensitive to the androgen mediated balding process and hence the transplanted hairs will last a lifetime –this is the basis for transplantation. Thus, hair transplantation is the only permanent method of treating baldness. Any person with significant baldness can undergo the procedure. Women can also under go the procedure in selected cases. However it is important to understand that pattern hairloss is a continuous process and hence frequently combination with drug therapy is also required. Very young people are not suitable candidates as they are not emotionally mature and their pattern of hairloss is yet to be established. Like wise, elderly people with extensive baldness are also not good candidates. As in any surgical procedure, history of serious underlying medical illness is a contraindication for hair restoration.

‹‹ How is hair transplantation carried out? Previously, hair transplantation used to be done by a simple method called punch transplantation in which instruments called punches were used to transplant groups of 8-12 hairs. This method though simple, used to give an artificial, ugly “doll “look. This method has been abandoned in favour of a new method called Follicular unit hair transplantation.

the anesthetic is injected into the scalp. Once the skin is anesthetized, there is no pain. Hospital admission is not required and patient can return to work the next day wearing a cap The effort is to transplant the maximum number of grafts in one session to avoid repeat surgeries. It is possible to transplant up to 3000 follicular units in one session. In some cases with extensive baldness, more than one session may be needed. The cosmetic result with the latest technique, Follicular unit hair transplantation is excellent as the architecture of the units is preserved by microscopic dissection . It is also important to note that the technique is skill oriented and involves team work.

‹‹ Are there any side effects? When will be the results seen? Since the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, there are no serious side effects. After the surgery, small scabs will form on the scalp at the graft sites, which disappear in 4-7days. A cap will have to be won to hide these scabs. Shampooing can be resumed 24 hours after surgery. Mild swelling of fore head can result on 3-4 days, which is usually mild and subsides in a day. The suture (stitch) used in the donor area is undetectable as it is completely covered by the existing hair and is removed two weeks after surgery. Typically, the grafted hair will shed in 2-4 weeks. New growth will begin in 3-4 months and length will increase approximately 1/2 inch per month. Full results are seen in 8-9 months.

‹‹ What is laser Hair transplantation? Can artificial hairs be used?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, as follows:

Laser was used to create recipient holes and it was claimed that the use of laser caused less bleeding. However, laser also leads to destruction of tissue which can affect growth of hairs. Hence use of laser is not favoured. Artificial hairs are poyproplylene fibres which look like hairs; these are fixed to the inner most layer of scalp called galea in a knot in a simple procedure. However, these fibres a re on the banned list of FDA in USA and have a history of leading to frequent problems such as infections, allergy, frequent loss of fibres, cysts etc. Hence their use is not advocated. It is important to understand that many treatments are advertised in the lay press; often these treatments are costly and do not have sufficient proof. Hence patients have to be careful and seek proper information before resorting to such treatments.

and 1-1.5 cm wide is removed from occipital scalp (back of the head). The donor area is then sutured; the suture is not visible and lies hidden under the hairs. The donor graft is then dissected into follicular units of 2 hair, 3 hairs and single hair, under a microscope to avoid transection (cutting) of roots. The follicular units are then transplanted over the recipient area. The procedure is simple, though time consuming (lasting for 3-5 hours depending on the number of hairs to be transplanted). Some discomfort is to be expected as

Security of joint family- one of the pillars on which our previous generation’s retirement planning rested is either gone or will disappear soon. Advances in health care facilities and improvements in standard of living have pushed up life expectancy in India, which means a retiree has to plan for a span of 2030 years after his retirement. Decreasing family size, greater life expectancy, the geographical disposition of farmland, and higher percentage of working women has affected elder care. Living independently poses several problems. In addition, we learn from the media that the most vulnerable person for crimes is an elderly living alone. Apart from security there are problems of age related care and expenses. Most of the old age homes provide bare minimum amenities. There is a definite need for well appointed care homes at affordable price for the elderly-the retirement township is a refreshing alternative to the old age homes. NOSE HYGIENE

ith so much Environmental pollution –the emission of the industries , the thermal power plant and smog to tackle with, today’s emergency medical fraternity and fire personnel who encounter debris and irritants in their daily work, the factory workers, lawn keepers Painters and others exposed to irritants have real tough time to handle their noses. Exposure to irritants actually causes the membrane inside the nose which we call as mucous membrane to become thicker and swollen .and the nose hair to function less effectively as a filter. Just as we wash our hand and face or brush our teeth washing our nose is a factor in good health. If people made nasal cleansing technique at home as a routine hygiene it would appreciably improve their health and well being .Cleansing or rinsing with a nasal wash can be useful to people suffering with allergies, asthma, sinus problem as well as congestion.

Nose is the gateway to the head and defender of the lungs. Though Nose is not a vital organ But to understand the importance of the nose remember the bad cold you had, with nasal congestion or a running nose which made you irritable and reduced the quality of life ,energy and ability to function in general. Why do you feel nose so important. It processes the air we breathe before it enters the lungs .Most of this activity takes place in and on the turbinate located on the sides of the nasal passages. In an adult 18000 to 20000 liters of air pass through the nose each day It not only filters the air with 100% of efficacy but humidifies it and maintains the warmth .The moisture in this humidified air prevents the dryness of the lining of the lungs and bronchial tubes .Warming cold air to body’s temperature prevents secretions in the lungs from thickening

‹‹ NASAL RINSE WITH SALINE WATER BENEFICIAL TO KEEP YOUR SINUSES CLEAN Just as we wash our face to freshen up after a long stressful day , several studies have shown that Nasal rinsing with salt water have a surprising change in maintenance of the health of the sinuses .The polluted atmosphere tends to clog them with irritants and dust participles along with thickened mucus. Periodic washing them down with Luke warm salt water through a special pot called the neti pot keeps the nasal sinuses fit and reduces those agonizing headaches. If you are congested use the prescribed entire 8 ounces of salt water otherwise use 4 ounces only.Jala neti Pot specially designed for this purpose has a nozzle which can fix into the nostril .The pot must be filled with the warm saline water. To make the salt water mix half tea spoon full of uniodised salt in 8 ounce glass of warm water Uniodised salt is used because iodized salt may be irritating when used over a periods of time Stand squarely legs a part body at evenly distributed two feet and knee forward in front of a basin. Tilt the head to the right side and place the nozzle in the left nostril. Open the mouth slightly and breathe through the mouth .Keep the whole body relaxed and let the water pass out through the right nostril .When half of the water is used remove the pot remain bending forward let the water run out .Close the right nostril with a finger and blow gently through the left nostril so that the remaining water comes out. Practice in the same way passing the water in the right nostril. Through out the whole process breathe through the mouth. Don’t attempt through the nose. Don’t blow hard. It is best to do Bastrika and Kapalabathi Pranayama after this treatment to help the nose spin dry the excess water and maintain warmth in the nostril.

‹‹ Why one should consult a specialist? The knowledge of the disease, particularly knowing the symptoms is good and builds confidence in the affected individuals. But there are other conditions which mimic the same symptoms as that of piles. So, one should not jump to the conclusion “I have piles” and start self treatment. Such self treatment, or consulting and following treatment through personal column in popular magazines, the treatment by “Quacks”, the advice of the relatives and friends who might have only “halfknowledge” of the disease -can all lead to complications and further sufferings. Remember, it is very important to consult a doctor who has

Treatment at an early stage is simple and easy with minimum discomfort Is piles the only disease that causes pain and discomfort in the anal region or are there any other diseases that afflict that area? There are several conditions that cause pain and discomfort in the anal region and a person may easily be misled to believe it to be piles! ¾¾ “Fissure- in - Ano” is a disorder when a fissure or ulcer occur on the anal verge. confidence you desire to have”. The key to self confidence is for you to decide what you want and then act as if it were impossible to fail. Self confident people do not compare themselves with others. They only compare themselves with the very best that they can be. If you select some goals which are conflicting or literally impossible to achieve, then it causes anxiety and tension and naturally shatters your confidence level instead of helping you in any way. You can increase confidence with the realization that you are living your life according to your highest estimated value. The outer limit of our potential is ascertained by trust on yourself and confidence that what you think is possible. Select after a good bit of thought an aim, that will magnetize your personality and to fulfill it drive with all your force of confidence courage strong will power and a winning attitude. Start your day with a happy smile by seeing yourself at the mirror to pass the day brightly. Before going to bed at night also do the same and fill up your subconscious mind with positive thoughts. Your courage and confidence will increase manifold when you encounter challenges and overcome them. Confident people always think - ‘Possibility exists every morning of our lives’. Avoid negative minded people. They always discourage you and shatter your confidence, Your self discipline increases your confidence trust and belief in your self and your abilities. You will build up more confidence when you achieve success. With this renewed confidence, your path to meet success smoothens. Cultivate a supreme confidence in yourself and your own anticipation of defeat. Regain confidence by commanding over doubts. In everybody’s mind some doubt will come but a confident person does not bother or worry, he stands as a dictator over doubts, then he will surely be a winner. Put an end to the inner critic stopping all negative and pessimistic thoughts, which let you down. Challenge those thoughts instantly and make them powerless. Throw them away from the budding stage. According to JV Carney five important factors that shatter confidence that you should also take utmost care not to do are: Repeating the same mistakes; Others beginning to express doubts; Inability to do what you wanted to do; Fear creeping through and revealing itself; Doubting yourself and your capabilities

M

ajor study shows that tobacco-related cancers and cervical cancer are important causes of death among working-age people in India New research analyses cancer death rates across India, and shows that oral, stomach, and lung cancers are important causes of death in Indian men, while cervical, stomach, and breast cancers cause the most cancer deaths among Indian women. The Article, published Online First by The Lancet, is by Professor Prabhat Jha, Centre for Global Health Research, St. Michael’s Hospital and University of Toronto, ON, Canada, and colleagues across India and worldwide. About three-quarters of Indians live in rural areas. Yet mortality for specific cancers has previously been estimated mostly with data from India’s 24 urban population-based cancer registries, with only two registries representing rural areas. In this new study the authors assessed cancer mortality in the Million Death Study (MDS), which is led by the Office of the Registrar General of India, and is one of the few large, nationally representative studies (including rural areas) of the causes of death in any low-income or middleincome country. The authors focus on the geographical and social variation in specific cancers, and the degree to which these cancers might be avoidable by controlling their risk factors or causative agents. The authors found that 7137 of 122 429 study deaths were due to cancer, corresponding to 556 400 cancer deaths across the whole of India in 2010. Some 71% (395 000) of these deaths occurred in people aged 30-69 years (200 100 men and 195 300 women). Cancer deaths accounted for 6% of deaths across all ages, but among the 30-69 years age group this rose to 8% of the 2-5 million total male deaths and 12% of the 1-6 million total female deaths. At 30-69 years, the three most common fatal cancers in men were: oral (including lip and pharynx, 45 800 [23%]), stomach (25 200 [13%]), and lung (including trachea and larynx, 22 900 [11%]. For women, the leading causes of cancer death were cervical (33 400 [17%]), stomach (27 500 [14%]), and breast (19 900 [10%]) cancers in women. Tobacco-related cancers represented 42-0% (84 000) of male and 18-3% (35 700) of female cancer deaths at ages 30-69 years and there were twice as many deaths from oral cancers as lung cancers, in part due to common use of chewing tobacco in men and women. The authors say: “The number of oral cancers was more than twice the number of lung cancers in individuals aged 30-69 years, indicating that the range of fatal cancers caused by tobacco in India differs substantially from that in high-income countries.” Age-standardized cancer mortality rates per 100 000 were similar in rural areas (men 96, women 97) and urban areas (men 102, and women 91, but varied greatly between the states. Mortality rates were two times higher in the least educated than in the most educated adults: men, illiterate 107 vs. most educated 46; and

Cancer mortality in India a Nationally Representative Survey women, illiterate 107 vs most educated 43. Cervical cancer was around 40% less common in Muslim than in Hindu women, probably due to high circumcision rates among Muslim men having a protective effect against human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, a causative agent in cervical cancer. In terms of geographical variation, the authors noted that a 30-year old man in northeastern India had the highest chance (11 -2%) of dying from cancer before 70 years of age. By contrast, the risk was less than 3% for men in the adjacent states of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odissa in eastern India. For women, the highest risk (6-0%) of dying from cancer before 70 years of age was in the northeastern states. Rates of cancer deaths in India are about 40% lower in adult men and 30% lower in women than in men and women in the USA or UK (table 1). However, cancer death rates are expected to rise, particularly with increases in age-specific rates of tobacco smoking. The authors conclude: “Prevention of tobacco-related and cervical cancers and earlier detection of treatable cancers would reduce cancer deaths in India, particularly in the rural areas that are underserved by cancer services. The substantial variation in cancer rates in India suggests other risk factors or causative agents that remain to be discovered.” For further information please contact

TINNITUS RINGING SOUND IN YOUR EARS ‹‹ B.N. Pranesha Rao Audiologist, Sanjay Gandhi Accident Hospital and research institute Byrasandra, Bangalore -17 Ph – 080-26574088

Many people experience some time or the other a bussing sound in their ears, probably after a long tedious period of work. It needs careful attention and detailed investigations from an ENT specialist. as prevailing in big industries. This is supposed to be due to the discharge of nerve impulses in fibers of auditory nerve, a kind of irritative after effective of the intense stimulation. A detailed investigation has to be carried out to ascertain if it is due to lesion in the auditory path. Such tests not only determine the degree of hearing loss in the ears but are also one of the important diagnostic tools to establish the underlying pathological reasons for the occurrence of Tinnitus in an individual. Some of the theories say that a particular point or portion on the basilar membrane of the organ of corti in cochlea of the inner ear. In order to give a relief to the patient if he is suffering with severe Tinnitus affecting even his sleep. Others may in the nerve endings. Some people might even taken tranquillisers in order to get relieved from the annoyance caused by Tinnitus. A few have also suggested ignoring the presence of Tinnitus and not paying any attention to that. But it might be very difficult task for a person to do so. Some may get slight relief if he does valsalva (closing noise and mouth to blow air to the ears). A doctor has to take an elaborate history of Tinnitus in the patient followed by various investigations to arrive at a specific line of treatment. Even then the patient might not get any relief. He may have to live with persisting sound in the ears. Therefore sound in the ear, cannot be ignored by anyone though* treatment is really a challenging one to an ENT specialist in particular and to the doctors in general. But even this is not properly understood. These effects which occur apparently in ear mechanisms are not in the higher analytical level of Brain.

any people experience some time or the other a bussing sound in their ears, probably after a long tedious period of work. This sound in the ears is medically termed as Tinnitus, is a subjective sense of “Noises in the Head” or Ringing in ears of which there is no observable cause. It may occur occasionally or a person might not have given any attention thought it has persisted for a longer time. This sound has greater clinical significance from a diagnostic point of view in the sense that it could either be physiological or psychological. Tinnitus may take various forms. It may be of a rushing or hissing nature or a noise of constant frequency like that obtained from a tuning fork. Jt may very day by day or some times may be less in the morning times than at nights or evenings. It may go on increasing in intensity from morning tili evening. In some persons it may be constant throughout the day or intermittent in nature occurring either in one or both the ears. If he is asked to explain clearly the nature of sound a person may compare it to the humming sound of a bee or to engines whistling noise or to the sound produced by a rotating fan, or to the cracking sound of dried leaves. Persons may even feel as if the sound is approaching him from outside. So each person gives different examples. These subjective example help a doctor to understand whether the sound is high frequency or of low frequency in nature. Tinnitus may also be present along with attacks of dizziness, nausea, vomiting and loss of hearing (as in meniere’s disease) It can also be the result of exposure to high and sudden noise levels like crackers, gun fire or continuous

loud sound develop Tinnitus which even disturb his sleep, if it sleep, if it persists for a long time. Stress and strains due to emotional factors may also give rise to the buzzing sound in ears. Due to ageing process also one may develop Tinnitus. This may be due to the degeneration of nerves in the auditory path. A man who has a strong dosage of antibiotics is likely to get tinnitus. It may appear after One has suffered an attack of typhoid or small pox or chicken pox. Severe injuries to the head or blow to the ears due to accidents may cause tinnitus. If a person is subjected to sudden charges in the atmospheric pressure (as inn the case of fighter and bomber pilots) he may develop tinnitus along with other symptoms. High rise in blood pressure or blood sugar level in an individual can also be one of the factors causing tinnitus Therefore while occurrence of tinnitus may look simple it is a complicated, phenomenon and needs the careful attention and detailed investigations from an ENT specialist. The causative factor of tinnitus may be many. There is no single method of treatment for -tinnitus in the medical history. The specialists may first rule out any pathological or psychological factors of Tinnitus.

Obviously tinnitus may persist for periods of minutes, or hours after a severe noise exposure and is a sign of potential damage. Since noticeable dullness of hearing and tinnitus tend to disappear after some hours away from noise they usually make little impression. These sounds may also occur due to pathological reasons such as continuous discharge from one or both the ears or in cases of middle ear disease such as the fixation of stapes (Otoselerosis). These sounds may also be caused due to perforation in the ear drum or some times even due to excessive accumulation of wax in the ears. Some persons who are suddenly exposed to a very
