One of the simplest and also one of the most important ways to improve the functioning of your body is to take vitamins and mineral supplements. My most important recommendation is that you take vitamins every day in optimum amounts to supplement the vitamins that you receive in your food. ¾¾ Do Aerobic Exercise Doing regular physical exercise is very important for your age, health and physical abilities and mental functioning. Exercise brings more oxygen to the brain through improved blood circulation. This addition of oxygen improves the functioning of your brain. Aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging, running, cycling and swimming are good for your heart and brain. It is recommended that you warm up for 10 minutes, then exercise for 20 minutes, and then cool down for another 10 minutes. Do not do too much of exercise in a single day and be regular in exercise. HUNGER CONTROL

‹‹ Dr. Chalapathy Professor of General Surgery Vydehi Hospital Whitefield, Bangalore – 66 Ph: 080-28413381/2/3/4

HELP! I’m always so hungry!

Control your hunger ... Before It Controls you Hunger is nothing more than a physiological reaction of the body, letting us know it is time to eat. How we respond to hunger - i.e., what type of food we put in our body in response to feeling hungry, and whether we tend to overeat or ‘binge’ in this situation. We know that we are what we eat. Hunger (or the drive to eat) is the single greatest enemy of any weight loss program. In order to control hunger effectively, one has to first understand and need to know about hunger, to get the upper hand in this battle. Hunger is a perfectly normal phenomenon but what creates problems is the deregulation of the hunger mechanism which ultimately results in overeating and increased calorie intake long-term. It is darned hard to control our hunger. So here are tricks to control hunger so that you can go ahead and finally be successful in your attempts to stop overeating. ÂÂ Learn to predict your body’s hunger schedule, and to intercept it before it kicks in: ÂÂ Chew sugarless gum. This is a great way to satisfy the “chewing” instinct and the mind will think its eating ÂÂ Eat small frequent meals: A good way to control hunger is to eat regular meals, of reasonable size, before feeling very hungry. Eat 5-6 small meals per day. This is very important because it keeps you satisfied throughout the day. Your body needs food to provide energy, repair damaged muscle tissue, and to carry out various other functions .Once we feel very hungry, the odds

are we’ll eat a larger amount of food, and we’ll crave foods that are rich in saturated fats and/or sugars. Such foods are not only fattening, but also likely to cause renewed hunger and fatigue a short time after the meal. So when choosing your food, make it a point to avoid them. These foods are certain to derail your weight loss program Destroy temptation Drink more water: Drink 2-3 big glasses of water or a diet drink when hunger pangs hit. Water fills up the stomach and makes you feel full. Water is the healthiest, cheapest and most easily available appetite suppressant around. Thirst is often mistaken as hunger. Also, foods with high water content can fill you up easily. They naturally pack fewer calories for their volume. Increase your fluid intake: Toss together a salad of lettuce, cucumbers, celery and tomatoes, or a fruit cup with watermelon, strawberries and orange slices for a watery hunger-satisfying snack. Walking first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This is the best way to burn maximum fat. Eat protein at every meal. Protein is critical for maintaining/building muscle and will keep you full.

Avoid simple sugars, Fruit juice and soda will kill any diet plan because they spike insulin and make you hungry. Eat high fiber foods. Fiber expands in the stomach and makes you feel full. Oatmeal and beans have tons of fiber. Add some healthy fats. Fat is very satiating and helps with hunger. Focus on olive oil, salmon, avocados, walnuts. Eat slowly. Make sure to allow the body/ mind time to respond to the presence of food in the stomach. Choose low calorie snacks. Air popped popcorn and fat-free Jell-O are great snacks during the day if hunger hits. Drink green tea and oolong tea - they are particularly rich in healthy antioxidants which rejuvenate the body and facilitate weight loss. Find a new hobby  that doesn’t involve food. Examples: Yoga, martial arts, meditation, arts and crafts, working out at the gym, etc. Taking your mind off food and keeping it focused on something you enjoy can work wonders. Relax more during the day. This decreases the blood-levels of the hormone cortisol (the stress hormone) Increase your sleep time: You should sleep at least 8 hours per night. This keeps you away from food (literally), and decreases your  stress levels (which makes it easier to loose fat, especially abdominal fat). Lack of sleep affects hormones related to appetite, causing you to gain pounds. In conclusion, getting enough sleep is an excellent way to control hunger effortlessly. Tip: Take Fish and walnuts. However, about 7 walnuts bring in 180 calories, so try not to exceed this portion in one day. Avoid restaurant food, especially fast food. It is likely to contain trans fats, which may cause renewed hunger shortly after eating. Trans fats also promote accelerated weight gain, and have somewhat of an addictive effect (give you the urge to eat more of the same Go nuts. Drink two glasses of water and eat an ounce of nuts (6 walnuts, 12 almonds or 20 peanuts). Within 20 minutes, this can

extinguish your craving and dampen your appetite ÂÂ Focus on the fatigue: Shut the door, close your eyes, re-energize. ÂÂ Get minty fresh. Brush your teeth; gargle with mouthwash. “When you have a fresh, clean mouth, you don’t want to mess it up ÂÂ Distract yourself. If only ice cream will do, it’s a craving, not hunger. Cravings typically last ten minutes, recognize that and divert your mind: Call someone, listen to music, run an errand, meditate or exercise. ÂÂ Plan or avoid. Vary your usual routine to avoid passing the bakery or pizzeria. ÂÂ Don’t skip meals: Skipping meals and going too long without food can turn hunger pangs into irresistible cravings. Don’t skip breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day. Your first meal of the day helps replenish all those nutrients lost during that all-night fast. Missing out on this meal means setting you up for low blood sugar levels and, thus, low energy levels and irresistible hunger pangs and cravings at lunchtime. ÂÂ Eat vegetables which are healthy. They are also rich in fibre, and secret weapon to control hunger. While all vegetables are beneficial as far as good health and hunger control go, certain veggies, like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and mushrooms, are super-high in fibre and have a negligible amount of calories. They can fill your stomach and control your hunger while filling you with a small amount of calories. ÂÂ Eat more whole grains which are less refined carbohydrates, healthier, higher in fibre. Thus they are more filling and satisfying. While refined carbs -- like idlis, dosas, white bread, white rice -- may be low in fat, they are higher in fibre. You may run the risk of over-consuming calories. ÂÂ Eat slowly: It actually works. The brain actually takes ten minutes longer than the stomach to receive the message that it is full. Thus, eating too fast might cause you to eat beyond the point of fullness without even realising. ÂÂ If hungry between meals, choose a healthy snack which brings in a reasonable amount of calories ÂÂ Exercise: When you start feeling hunger, challenge yourself with a short burst of exercise (such as 50 squats, or 5 minutes lifting dumbbells, or 20 pushups) - and only then reward yourself with snacks. Exercise in itself may help control hunger. Since the heart rate goes up, i.e. the heart is pumping harder, more blood with nutrients is being delivered to the vital organs (including the brain), which may curtail the sensation of hunger. If you experience persistent refractory hunger, you may also want to talk to your doctor about ruling out any medical conditions apt to cause increased appetite. In such instances, medical treatment may be necessary to control hunger. www.bangalorehealthtv.com 7

The issues of an ageing population in which the average age of a society is an increasingly important issue in many nations of the world. The societal effects of age are great.

‹‹ Dr. C. SHARATH KUMAR DIRECTOR & CHIEF FERTILITY SURGEON, MEDIWAVE IVF & FERTILITY hospital City X-Ray complex, Sayyaji Rao Road, Mysore - 570021. Ph : (O) : 2444441, (R) : 2519026. E-mail : drcsharath@hotmail.com.

Ageing or aging is the process of becoming older. A person is considered as old at the age of 65. Ageing is an inevitable part of growing older. There are certain factors that can minimize this process like the appearance of blotchy skin, age spots, wrinkles etc It can be difficult for older people to maintain self confidence, stay active and involved and feel useful and needed ,especially with the physical limitations age can impose. But the better they feel about themselves, the more likely it is that they will be able to cope with the minor health problems of ageing ¾¾ Dividing the lifespan A human life is often divided into various ages. Because biological changes are slow moving and vary from person to person, arbitrary dates are usually set to mark periods of human life. In some cultures the divisions given below are quite varied. ªª Pre-birth: Conception to birth ªª Infancy: Birth to 2 ªª Childhood: 2 to 12 ªª Adolescence: 13 to 19 ªª Early Adulthood: 20 to 39 ªª Late Adulthood: 40 to 64 ªª Aged persons(senior citizens): 65+ till death

¾¾

Effects of ageing: 1. Memory decline: Steady decline in many cognitive processes are seen across the lifespan, starting in one’s thirties. Research has focused in particular on memory and ageing, and has found decline in many types of memory with ageing, but not in semantic memory or general knowledge such as vocabulary definitions, which typically increases or remains steady. 2. Changes in body metabolism: As the body

ages ,there are also unique nutritional concerns. cholesterol intake should be monitored due to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease(heart diseases and stroke).High blood pressure can be controlled through a low-fat and low salt diet. 3. Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis occurs when one’s bones are excessively fragile and break easily. Women are four times more likely than men to develop this condition because of the loss of estrogen at menopause. 4. Alzheimer’s disease: It is the most common cause of dementia in older people. It begins slowly at first the only symptom may be mild forgetfulness. People with Alzheimer’s disease may have trouble remembering recent events, activities or the names of familiar people or things. 5. Eyesight problem: Many older people have relatively good eyesight into there eighties and beyond Growing older do not mean one see’s poorly. But age brings changes that can weaken the eyes, making reading, in particular, more difficult. Cataracts are common among older people. Cataracts are cloudy areas in part or the entire eye lens. The lens is usually clear and let’s light through. Cataracts keep light from passing through the lens, and this causes loss of eyesight.

them when they are aged. Hence it is the duty of all the adults to bring up their children and shape them to better adults.Adults are also advised to plan their

6. Hearing loss: As people get older they have hearing problems. They may mistake words in a conversation, miss musical notes at a concert, or leave a ringing doorbell unanswered

¾¾

Other causes of ageing: Stress: Scientists have identified the first direct link between stress and ageing ,a finding that could explain why intense, long-term emotional strain can get sick and grow old before their time. chronic stress appears to hasten the shriveling of the tips of the bundles of genes inside cells, which shortens the life span and speeds the body’s deterioration Emotional: Given the physical and cognitive declines seen in ageing, a surprising finding is that emotional experience improves with age. Older adults are better at regulating their emotions and experience negative affect less frequently than younger adults and show a positively effect in their attention and memory. The emotional improvements show up in longitudinal studies as well as in cross-sectional studies, and so cannot be entirely due to only the happier individuals surviving. ¾¾ Ways to combat the signs of ageing: Regular exercise can improve some diseases and disabilities in older people who already have them. It can improve mood and relive depression, too. Limit alcohol, Quit smoking, Avoid crash diets, Manage stress, Get regular exercise, Avoid harsh skin products, Get enough rest, Use sunscreen, Drink plenty of water ¾¾ Social security for aged persons: The society is witnessing a gradual but definite withering of the joint family system as a result of which a section of the family, primarily, the elderly, are exposed to emotional neglect and to lack of physical support.    Given the trend of population ageing in India , the elder persons face a number of problems ranging from absence of ensured and sufficient income to support themselves and their dependents, to ill-health, to absence of social security, to loss of a social role and recognition and to non-availability of opportunities for creative use of free time.  The trend clearly reveals that ageing is emerging as one of the major social challenge.  Hence, there is need to pay greater attention to Ageing issues and to promote holistic policies and programmes for ensuring income and social security for this vulnerable segment of society. As we know the saying “What you sow you grow” ,so if people bring up their children and shape them into better citizens they look after

aged days by taking proper precautions and steps ¾¾ Some of the proper precautions and measures for better aged life are: ªª Keeping sufficient reserve funds in banks. ªª Having medical insurance for sufficient amount. ªª Keeping all assets which earned and inherited in one’s name . ªª Transfer of assets by any method including “Will” should be done in such away that they should be transferred only after death of the person. ¾¾ Sexual life and ageing: For women, vaginal discomfort, dryness or pain during intercourse may occur, due to decreased lubrication, the result of hormonal changes related to menopause. Treatments and ways to adapt are available. Men may notice that achieving an erection may take longer and that it may not be as large or firm as before. Orgasms may be less intense than in their youth. These changes are normal and a result of a decrease in hormones. Again, treatment and ways to adapt are available. ¾¾ Impact of ageing on health care demand: While the effects on society are complex, there is a concern about the impact on health care demand. of specific interventions are required :  To cope with the expected increase in demand for long-term care in aging societies Can be organized under four headings:  Improve system performance;  Redesign service delivery;  Support informal caregivers;  And shift demographic parameters ¾¾ Conclusion: Ageing men and women face many changes mentally, physically, and emotionally. Many of these changes offer new opportunities in life and a new outlook. It is important to maintain an optimistic and active life-style. Drug companies are currently searching for ways to mimic the lifespan-extending affects. It is the duty of the government ,local bodies, voluntary organizations, home for the aged and the young people to look after the aged persons to make their life comfortable, meaningful and enjoyable one.z

Don’t Worry Be Happy put an end to stress, anxiet………. Attack and conquer deadly killer stress and anxiety. Be realistic and make changes slowly. Above all, doesn’t worry be happy! Among the hardest parts of living in the modern world is stress and anxiety. We get over-stressed now and then. With worries about work, Deadlines at work, demanding bosses, bills to be paid at home, kids demanding for time and attention, changes in the environment, the economy, natural disasters, terrorism, and the general state of the world, it seems that there is no end to the number of things to worry about. These are the realities of everyday living that people in an industrialized world have to constantly contend with, if these factors are not handled properly this will lead to stress. Though we cannot control many of these things, they still weigh on our minds and cause us stress and anxiety. However, despite these concerns, we should try to avoid stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety are, at their hearts, mental problems. The stress conditioning may actually begin when we are too young to do anything about it. Children who face a great deal of stress will find their minds altered such that they will quickly return to a state of stress at the slightest provocation Unfortunately, this creates serious problems not only for the mind, but also the body. What problems can too much stress cause? Stress and anxiety put a great many demands on the human body. It causes headaches; high blood pressure, ulcers, sleeps problems, Colds and the Flu - Allergies - Diabetes Damage Relationships, immune system deficiencies and can even swell the joints, which can cause severe problems with conditions such as arthritis. As well, stress and anxiety can result in depression, memory problems, and even alcohol and drug abuse for those who suffer from stress and anxiety regularly. Thus, stress and anxiety are not merely problems of the

mind, but they are problems of the mind that can cause problems in the body. The mind does, in surprising ways, control the body. And a mind that is overly taxed can lead to a body that is overly taxed. The list goes on Being stressed is not part of a healthy lifestyle. Not only is stress damaging to us physically, it can also cause us to eat more and exercise less. Stress can be a huge obstacle that gets in the way of our healthy lifestyle goals. ¾¾ Stress Management Stress factors are part of daily life, the goal is not to eliminate stress but to find the optimal level where the stress factors motivate the individual in continuing his/her life and not be overwhelmed. This is called stress management. Most sickness is due to unrelieved stress such as hypertension, dizziness, hyperacidity, etc. But life without these stress factors may lead to boredom, dejection and depression. On the other hand, excess of which may make one feel tied up in knots. This indicates that stress must be reduced in daily living. So, how do we know that we are attaining the optimal stress level? What can you do to effectively manage your stress? Two things may be done. It may be done by either changing the source of stress or changing one’s reactions to it. The following steps will help you to make changes to have less stress and more happiness in your life. ªª Be aware of what stresses you and how you react to stress. Learn to understand what situations; events, circumstances and people cause you to feel negative stress. Think about what message your brain is telling you about why you feel stressed. Notice the physical reactions you have, a racing heart, and shortness of breath, tight muscles or feeling angry and www.bangalorehealthtv.com

upset. Think about the changes you can make. Is there a way you can set up a structure to reduce or eliminate the stress by being more organised or managing your time better. Can you avoid or eliminate any of the things that cause you negative stress? Can you reduce your exposure to stress by taking a break away from the situation? ªª Better manage your emotional reaction to stress. Different things cause different people stress. We feel stressed because of how we personally perceive the situation. Are you stressed because you view things are critical or urgent when that may not be the case? Try and be more moderate in your view and put the situation into perspective. Get someone else’s perspective on the situation and compare with your own. ªª Better manage your physical reaction to stress. Learn relaxation and deep breathing techniques that will slow down your racing heart, improve your breathing and relax those tense muscles. Learn to smile and laugh more. It’s hard to be angry and stressed while you’re laughing. ªª Look after your emotional needs. Don’t live up to other expectations, as these will not be in alignment with your own needs and values. Hang around upbuilding and supportive friends or coworkers. Find someone to share your concerns with. Also learn to ask for and accept help. ªª Look after your physical health. Being in good physical shape in itself reduces stress. Be physically active everyday. Eat well, don’t smoke or drink excessively. Get enough sleep and regularly take time out to do things you enjoy. Coping With Stress - 3 Simple Steps You ignore stress because it does not attack you like a big bang. You can attack killer stress using 3 basic steps. Step #1 you need to start your day in a stress free natural state. A stress free natural state means that your cells have recharge and you are experiencing a wonderful flow of energy. A stress free state does not include coffee, alcohol, smoking or pain killers in order to experience relaxation. A natural stress Free State is having the awesome feeling of relaxation by habitually practicing to relax. This practice also helps you conquer killer stress. You can use mantras, guided meditation, soothing music or anchoring. Step #2 you need to take a quiet break at lunch time and do another relaxation exercise. Yes I have heard all kinds of excuse over the years, but when you take the time (to do a relaxation exercise at lunch time) you will be amazed at the profound results. Killer stress will be neutralized. Step #3 simply states that you separate work from home by doing a relaxation exercise before going home. The purpose of this exercise is to help you knock out killer stress. This allows you to recharge your energies so that you can spend time with your friends, family and or love ones. One simple relaxation exercise is listening to whatever music you consider soothing. This has to be done either before you enter the house or the first thing you do after entering the house. If you are self employed or work from home then you need to make the necessary adjustments as when to do the relaxation exercises.

So you benefit by reducing your tension and obtaining a workout as well. Of course talk to your physician before beginning an exercise program. Relax: Yes it is hard to relax when you are stressing. Try taking in a deep breath slowly. Now as you breathe out picture all the stress leaving you. You may find that doing relaxation techniques on a regular basic when you aren’t stressed out to be beneficial. Learn relaxation techniques such as: Meditation - Yoga - Listening to some soothing music. Prayer Asking for Assistance - Joining a Support Network Look into what causes your stress: You may not know what is inducing you stress. Try to understand where the source is coming from if possible. Once you understand what is causing your stress you can try to modify these problem areas. Drink plenty of clean water to keep those brain neurons communicating. Get Enough Rest: Getting enough sleep at night is crucial to keeping stress at bay. Try to relax the best you can in the evening. Exercise early so that you aren’t all wound up. If you watch a movie ensure it’s not too violent are exciting. It may be better to watch a comedy, read something soothing or listen to soft pleasant music. If your stress is so severe and you can’t seem to find relief regardless of what you try then you may desire to request professional help. By not worrying too much, the individual saves his body from possible physical illnesses. He is protecting his health to deteriorate due to lack of sleep and inappropriate food intake. Lastly, maintain your emotional reserves. The support from family and friends are still basic necessities in life. Do not work out for a stress free life, work out to achieve and live a well stress managed life. Don’t delay. Start on these recommendations right away. Don’t stop there. Keep looking for new ways to manage your stress and genuinely enjoy life once more.

Summer Hair Care Deep-conditioning is essential for hair at least once a week in summer. This style may make you feel relaxed. ªª To prevent frizzy hair, use a leave-in conditioner or hair tonics that are specific for frizzy hair. ªª If the ponytail is getting boring, try a French braid. ¾¾ Summer Beauty Tips ªª The Body Soap should have all-natural formula. ªª If you spend lots of time outside, be sure to use sunscreen ªª Make sure that you drink - at least 8 glasses of water a day and even more when you are outside. If possible, to drink at least once every 30 min. Water not only helps you feel fresh, but it also prevents dehydration and will help wash out a lot of toxins. ªª If you get sunburned, apply aloe vera extract or lotions containing aloe vera. ªª For a day at the beach, or if you plan to spend the whole day shopping, apply toner to your body and neck for a quick cool off. Remember not to spray your eyes! ªª Feet need to look good in summer! They are more visible now than at any other time of the year. Scrub your feet with foot scrubs. ªª Apply body oil or other light oils on heels at night, wrap in cotton and leave it on overnight for soft and sexy feet. ªª If your toenails have turned yellow, now would be good time to soak them in a basin with some mild bleach. ªª On really hot days, you can use a hydrating toner instead of a moisturizer that feels heavy. ¾¾ Tips To Freshen Up Your Skin Excessive heat during the summers disturbs the critical oil-water balance in the body. Too much of perspiration clogs the pores and exposure to the U.V. rays results in premature aging, wrinkles and sagging of the skin. Also there is a risk of skin cancer.  Gentle steaming of face helps in getting rid of the dirt on the face.  Pat dry your face instead of rubbing it with towel.  Use cleanser, and then tone your face using a good toner and then rub ice piece on your face.  Avoid caffeine and hard drinks.  Drink lots of water.  Take small but frequent meals and avoid protein rich diet.  Splash water on your skin in an interval of 2-3 hours. ¾¾ Sun Protection ªª Use sunscreen be careful of expiry date. ªª Apply first coat of the sunscreen 20 minutes before

Summer Beauty Tips Summer is a great time for relaxation, recreation and renewal. While enjoying the hot, lazy days of summer, keep in mind that different beauty rules apply. Here are a few tips to keep you looking as good as you feel:

going out in the sun and second coat of the sunscreen 20 minutes after going out in the sun. ªª Reapply the sunscreen if you are out in the sun for a long time. ªª Recoat the sunscreen after swimming or being in water. ªª Try to do the heavy exercise in the cool hours like in the duration of 5-7 a.m. ªª Use glasses to protect your eyes from the harmful U.V. rays. ªª Infants under 6 month must be kept out of the sun. ªª Sunrays can be equally hazardous in the cloudy day. ¾¾ Summer Make-up Tips ªª If you wear mascara, try a waterproof. ªª A matte powder over foundation is better than heavy foundation lotions and creams that will look patchy once you sweat a little. ªª Lips need protection, so it would be best to apply a lip gloss or lip balm ªª Make sure you carry eye-make-up remover with you so that you avoid dark circle which can be a natural consequence of waterproof eye make-up. ªª Pink is a shade that looks more natural in lipsticks in summer. A creamy lipstick will be friendlier on the lips than matte lipsticks and will also last longer. ªª Nails are best kept short and practical at this time of the year. A lighter shade will save you the time in redoing your nails every now and then as the chips will not be obvious. ªª Leave your foundation in the refrigerator. When you smooth it on, the heat from your face will melt it into your skin making it look like you have naturally perfect skin. ªª Smudged eyeliner or kajal can look great on summer evenings and you can get this effect by heating the tip of your eye pencil with a lit match just before lining your eyes. ªª Bright and dark shades of nail polish look better on feet in summer, especially if you plan on walking around barefoot or in open sandals. Summertime can be great for your skin if you follow a few basic rules to take care of those areas that are most prone to damage—skin, hair and eyes. Keeping yourself adequately hydrated, adding essential nutrients to diet to avoid the heavier fats and proteins, taking plenty of vitamin C in the form of citrus fruits and juices, and getting the minimum 8 h of sleep can help you going through summer with good looks and great relaxation. www.bangalorehealthtv.com

Five Foods for Better Sleep

Dr.Venkatraman Hegde BNYS MS Nisarga Hospital Five road circle, Sirsi, UK district - 581401 Ph: 08384-225414 E-mail: drvhegde@yahoo.com Mob: 9448729434

Food and sleep actually affect one another: If you don’t eat right, you lose sleep; and when you’re sleep – deprived , you’re eating habits suffer, says a holistic nutritionist and author of Vibrant Living: Creating Radiant Health and Longevity (SPK Publications, 2003). “A lack of sleep causes leptin, an appetite – regulating hormone, to crash, which causes you to eat more,”. “Not only does eating more eventually lead to weight gain and an increased risk of obesity – both of which can affect how well you sleep – but the foods you’re most likely to reach for when you’re tired will keep you up at night.” So what’s an insomniac to do? For starters, get clear about which foods promote good shut – eye , and which have the potential to keep you up at night, and adjust your diet accordingly. ¾¾ Sleep – enhancing foods: Whole grains: Fiber – rich foods, such as brown rice and quinoa, do more than keep you full; they contain large amounts of tryptophan, an essential amino acid that increases the levels of serotonin (a feel – good neurotransmitter that calms the nervous system) and melatonin (a sleep – inducing hormone secreted in response to darkness) in the brain. What’s more, whole grains slowly nourish the body throughout the night after you digest them, says Lauren Taylor, CTN, a naturopath in Boulder, Colorado. That makes them an especially good choice for anyone who wakes up hungry during the night. Whole – grain carbohydrates also have a soothing effect. “Certain grains, like oats, act as natural relaxants and help calm the nervous system,” says Taylor.

Legumes: The high levels of B vitamins in legumes, such as black – eyed peas and lentils, also help calm your nervous system,. “Legumes can be a great choice for an evening meal because they often replace animal protein, which can cause sleep problems” .But legumes are not for everyone,. They can be hard for some to digest. To know if you fall into this category, pay close attention to how you feel after you eat them. If the legumes satisfy your hunger without making you feel overly full or gassy, they could be a good addition to your sleep – inducing arsenal. Have an upset stomach or feel sluggish after a meal of legumes? Skip them altogether or eat them only in moderation. Herbal teas: “Drinking caffeine – free tea, particularly gentle herbal varieties, relaxes the body, calms digestion, and soothes the stomach,”. The environment in which we eat potentially relaxing foods can have a profound effect on our nervous system. “That calming chamomile tea isn’t

necessarily going to be so calming if you drink it while you’re on the computer paying your bills at 10 o’clock at night,”. Instead, take your tea to a cozy spot where you can relax, smell the tea, and fully enjoy drinking it. “Unwinding in the evening – emptying out – that’s what’s important,”. “It’s a way of clearing your nervous system. If you haven’t let go of the day’s activities, where is all that energy going to go? If it remains pent up inside of you, it’s certainly going to affect your ability to sleep. Fruit: Especially high in sleep – inducing tryptophan, bananas, mangoes, and dates are also great substitutes for higher – calorie desserts. “It’s all about changing your habits,”. “Instead of cutting out dessert completely, replace cake and cookies – which can keep you up at night because of their high sugar content – with fruits that will satisfy your sweet tooth and help promote sleep. While fruits do contain sugar, it’s natural – not processed – and fruit also comes packed with fiber.” Another benefit from fruits: their high antioxidant content. “Think of nighttime as clean – up time for the body,” says Taylor. “If you go into the evening having just eaten foods that are cleansing and detoxifying, you’re helping that clean – up cycle. Vegetables and fruit are the most detoxifying foods you can eat.” Soups and stews: Adding sleep – inducing foods to your diet will certainly help you get your beauty rest, but you should also pay attention to how you prepare them. “Cooking sleep – inducing foods at low temperatures for long periods of time is ideal,”. “Soups and stews – particularly those filled with fiber – rich veggies and legumes and low – fat casseroles are much more calming and relaxing than seared meats and hot, spicy foods because when you cook something for a long time, the cooking process acts almost like our own digestive system,”. Long cooking times break down the starches and sugars in foods, so your body doesn’t have to work very hard to access their nutrients. ¾¾ Foods to avoid for a good night’s sleep ªª Fatty, high – protein foods: We all know how important it is for good heart health to ease up on saturated animal fats, but doing so can also help the state of your adrenal glands – important not only for good sleep but also for your overall health. Red meat contains high levels of the amino acid tyrosine, which causes the adrenal glands to pump cortisol through your body. This hormone is part of the fight – or – flight reaction that prepares us to face or run away from danger and certainly puts us in a heightened state that’s hardly conducive to falling and staying asleep. “Under normal circumstances, your adrenal activity is at its highest when you wake up and then descends throughout the day so it’s at its lowest ebb before you go to sleep,” says Taylor. “To promote good sleep, you need to support this adrenal rhythm with the foods you eat.” And for most that means turning the typical American diet upside down. Because high – protein foods stimulate the body, eat them in the morning and at midday, suggests Taylor. For dinner, steer clear of meats and other high – protein foods that will spike your

ªª

adrenal glands and opt for vegetables and plant – based sources of protein instead. Caffeine: While you may think that morning cup of Joe or two won’t interfere with your ability to wind down later in the day, think again. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant that affects the central nervous system. Although most doctors say it takes between four and seven cups of regular coffee a day to hinder sleep, caffeine – like red meat revs the body up. “Caffeine can over stimulate the adrenals, which actually compounds fatigue as it wears off,”. If you must have your morning cup, eat something nutritious with it and add milk or soy milk to dull the negative effects of the caffeine. High-sugar, empty-calorie sweets: “Think of cakes and cookies as the other end of the spectrum from whole grains,” says Taylor. “Sweets give you quick energy followed by a crash,” she says. “Because the energy you get from sweets isn’t long and sustained, odds are you’ll wake up because you’re hungry.” Instead of typical desserts, opt for fruit or even some healthy fats and whole grains, such as a quarter of an avocado spread on whole grain toast. “Healthy fats are satisfying, and they calm the nervous system,”. Cold foods: Even during the hot summer months when you might be craving cold foods, such as salads, smoothies, and ice cream, do keep in mind that they’re not necessarily the best for promoting sleep,. “When you eat cold foods, your body has to work hard to bring the food’s temperature up to your body temp,”. “If the food has been cooked, your body doesn’t have to spend as much energy breaking down the food, which is ideal for evening meals when the goal is to help your body unwind and work less.” Instead of a cold salad, for example, steam veggies and eat them at room temperature with a good olive oil drizzled on to.

Mango The mango is generally sweet, although the taste and texture of the flesh varies, some having a soft, pulpy texture, while the flesh of others is firmer, or may have a fibrous texture. For consumption of unripe, pickled or cooked fruit, the mango skin may be consumed comfortably, but has potential to cause contact dermatitis of the lips, gingiva or tongue in susceptible people. Under-ripe mangoes can be ripened by placing them in brown paper bags. They will then keep in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for about four or five days. Obesity - Factors Causing Overweight Do It Yourself Ayurvedic Herbal Facials

¾¾

What Causes Obesity? The Causes of Obesity Are ªª When a person consumes more calories than he burns then the excess calories get stored in the form of fat causing obesity. ªª Genetic Factors - Obesity tends to run in families and their tendency to accumulate fat. Even the diet and lifestyle habits which are practiced in family also contribute to obesity ªª Environment - A person’s eating habits and the level of physical activities a person has also contribute for excess deposition of fat. When a person eats food containing more calories and has a sedentary work then the calories consumed are more than calories burnt. The excess amount calories are stored as fat. ªª Psychological Disturbances - There is a tendency to over eat in response to negative emotions like boredom, sadness or anger. This leads to obesity. ªª Binge eating disorder. ªª Diseases and Conditions - like Hypothyroidism, Cushing’s syndrome, Depression, and certain neurological problems lead to overeating which in turn leads to accumulation of fat. ªª Medicines - such as steroids and some antidepressants may cause weight gain. Causes Of Obesity According To Ayurveda: The causes of obesity are very clearly explained in ayurveda. The following reasons which are mentioned in ayurveda increases the deposition of fat in one’s body. Avayamadivaaswapnashleshmalaaaharasevinaha|

The LPL breaks the circulating to free fatty acids which can enter the adipocyte. Insulin is also required for the transport of glucose, which is needed for conversion of free fatty acids to tryglycerides in adipocytes. The conversion of glucose to fatty acids is accomplished by insulin’s activation of several enzymes ¾¾ How Does Fat Accumulate Inside One’s Body? Adipose tissue is specialized connective tissue that functions as the major storage site for fat in the form of triglycerides. There Are Two Different Types of Adipose Tissues, namely ªª White adipose tissue ªª Brown adipose tissue Most Adipose Tissue is White. White Adipose Tissue Does Three Functions, namely ªª Heat insulation ªª Mechanical cushion (adipose tissue also surrounds internal organs and provides protection for these organs.) ªª A source of energy The adipose tissue which is directly below the skin (subcutaneous adipose tissue) specially acts as the heat insulator of the body. It conducts heat only one third compared to other tissues. The degree of insulation is dependent upon the thickness of this fat layer. Lipogenesis: is the deposition of fat. This process occurs in adipose tissue and in the liver. The excess calories (consumed more than what actually needed for the current physical activity ) is stored in adipose tissue. Carbohydrate and protein consumed in the diet can be converted to fat. The carbohydrates can be stored as glycogen in the liver and muscle and can also be converted to triglycerides in the liver and transferred to adipose tissue for storage. Amino acids from proteins are used for new protein synthesis or they can be converted to carbohydrate and fat. Fatty acids, in the form of triglycerides are consumed through the diet or synthesized by the liver

.Very little synthesis of free fatty acids occurs in the cells of adipose tissue (adipocytes). Triglycerides are the most important source of fatty acids, because this is the form in which dietary lipids are assembled by the digestive system and liver. Triglycerides are made up of long chain of fatty acids .These are hydrolyzed (broken) to glycerol and free fatty acids by an enzyme called Lipoprotein Lipase (LPL). The free fatty acids are taken up by cells of adipose tissues and stored again as triglycerides through a complex process Insulin, a hormone secreted by the cells of the pancreas, plays an important role in the lipogenic process. The net effect of insulin is to ªª Increase storage ªª Block mobilization and oxidation of fatty acids Obesity - Overweight Leads Health Disorders, and Is Also a Threat to One’s Life Health Risks Due To Obesity: Obesity Leads to the Following Health Complications ªª Type - 2 diabetes ªª Heart disease ªª High Blood pressure ªª Stroke ªª Few types of Cancers ªª Gall stones ªª Liver diseases ªª Osteo arthritis ªª Gout ªª Infertility ªª Irregular menstruation in women ¾¾ According to Ayurveda an Obese Individual Is More Prone to the following Health Disorders ªª Diabetes ªª Kidney related problems ªª Hepatitis ªª Low libido ªª Low energy levels ªª Skin problems ªª Fistula ªª Piles ªª Filariasis ªª Obesity - Ayurveda For Obesity: Numerous tips to reduce obesity have been mentioned in ayurveda. children. With a lack of awareness and lack of access to proper treatment, the cancer is sometimes detected at a more advanced stage. ¾¾ What are the signs of eye cancer in children? In very early stages of the disease the eyes may look normal externally. Once the tumor grows, the child may have the most common signs of: White, pearl like reflection from within the eye, Squinting of the eyes ¾¾ Signs of advanced cancer: ªª Large sized eye ball ªª Red, swollen and painful eye ¾¾ Can this eye cancer be treated? If the tumor is treated promptly, there is more than a 95% chance of cure. Once the cancer spreads outside the eye the cancer becomes a threat to life, especially when it spreads to the brain and other parts of the body. Tumors that are not large or life threatening can be treated by chemotherapy, cryotherapy and focal laser therapy. Large tumors may require removal of the affected eye. If it is detected very late the child may require surgery followed by sessions of chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants and radiotherapy. Our Ocular Oncology Department deals with various tumors (cancer) of the eye and the surrounding structures. Conditions managed commonly in this department are retinoblastoma, Choroidal Melanoma, Orbital tumours, metastases and lid tumours. We have acquired a large spot diode laser with indirect laser ophthalmoscope for delivery of transpupillary thermotherapy to retinal tumors, including retinoblastoma and choroidal melanoma. Recent innovations in treatment like Transpupillary Thermotherapy (TTT), chemotherapy, etc have enabled salvaging many eyes and lives. www.bangalorehealthtv.com

Role of Mantras on health Â

¾

Scriptures has a vast description of mantras such as Om Mantra, Gayatri Mantra And Mrityunjaya Mantra etc quoting that these mantras will benefit the humans in keeping their good health by warding off the mental stress and the physical ailments.  There are also many research studies showing that the mantras have significant effect on our health and even on plants.  The term mantra is composed of 2 words man & tantra where, man is the manas or mind and tra is the tool and hence mantra is the tool of mind.  In Sanskrit, mantra is defined as mananaat traayate iti mantrah, the repetition of any akshara or an alphabet, which has origin from Vedas and tantras.  Among the Vedas, Rigveda primarily involves the teaching of mantras like gayatri mantra which is practiced to invoke the sun god and the cosmic powers for their blessings.  Mantras are also said as the combination of grouping of the sound vibrations. It is a tool for connecting us with the spiritual wisdom and the most important tool for attuning our bodies and minds to their proper resonance.  Mantras are considered as a vehicle for expansion of the mind, liberation of energy and also one of the easiest of yogic practices to perform unlike asana or pranayama that most people find difficult to do.  It’s not only an important preparation for meditation, but mantra meditation is one of the main types of meditation with many variations.  Even the bhajans are based upon the repetition of mantric sounds, names or phrases. Advantages of Mantra chanting  According to a study, it is observed that the mantra affects subconscious mind, where the positive impressions can be programmed and the negative impressions can be removed.  Chanting of the mantra increases the concentration, memory, logical thinking and has a soothing effect on nervous system, helps in relaxing the muscles and can be

effectively used to reduce the stress and its effects. Â Mantra improves the psychological status of the mind in a positive way. Â Helps in controlling the emotions such as fears, desires, jealousy and maintains the stability of mind. Â It serves as a link to our individual intelligence with the greater intelligence that pervades all space, extending our awareness into the infinite and eternal. Â Asanas performed with repetition of the appropriate mantras bring a greater energy and awareness into the bones, muscles, joints, nerves and helps us to transcend body consciousness. Â Apart from the above, in the study of stigsby et al, it is observed that the mantra meditation showed modest reductions in blood pressure. Telles et al has showed the reduction in heart rate and rate of breathing by OM meditation. Â There are also other studies (Anuprita et al, Bali et al) which has shown the effectiveness of mantra in reducing back pain, neck pain and the stress associated through mind sound resonance relaxation technique which includes the maha mrityunjaya mantra. ¾ Relevance of Mantra yoga in today’s world The concept of yoga previously understood only as asana or the posture, now has expanded the thinking and has created awareness about yoga as a science including asanas, pranayama etc and not just the asanas. In this process, a new popular usage of mantras is arising. Just as each asana puts the body into an energetic posture in which higher forces can be released, so too each mantra puts the mind into a certain pose in which it can become a conduit for a higher flow of energy and grace. Each mantra like asana has its intention, form and means of adaptation. Much like each asana, each mantra has its signature energy that brings about a specific effect upon the mind and can be understood according to its sound, meaning and application. As asana is a key to the flexibility of the body, the right use of mantra is the key to the flexibility of the mind.

PCOS: A COMPLEX METABOLIC DISORDER We need to take a realistic and honest look at what is really bothering fertility of our women these days. With poor eating habits, specifically foods filled with hormones and chemicals, sedentary living habits and increasing stress levels, our women hood. One of these is PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) a complex metabolic and endocrine disorder in women. (Metabolic refers to the physical and biochemical processes required for the body to function normally). MAY-2013

AYURPHARMA

CASE STUDY: Ms X married for two years, in pursuance of a career, initially put off motherhood. Poor eating habits, lack of exercise and anxiety of climbing the corporate ladder added pounds to her already healthy frame. Her cycles started becoming irregular and now that she wanted a baby she found it difficult to conceive. Her skin also started behaving awkwardly. There was acne on her face and back, excessive body and facial hair, thinning of the scalp hair and velvety hyper pigmented skin folds. Her physician who examined her ovaries found them 2 to 5 times larger than the healthy ovaries. ‘You have PCOS’, said the doctor. This puts you at a risk for diabetes and pre diabetes condition. In each menstrual cycle, follicles (cavities holding the eggs) grow on the ovaries. Eggs develop within these cavities, one of which reach maturity faster than the others and get released in the fallopian tube of the uterus. This is ovulation. In case of PCOS, the ovaries are larger than the normal and there are a series of undeveloped follicles that appear in clumps like a bunch of grapes. When these cause a hormonal imbalance, a pattern of symptoms may develop. This pattern of symptoms is called a syndrome.

www.bangalorehealthtv.com

29

Polycystic means the accumulation of incompletely developed follicles in the ovaries. ¾¾ SCARIEST PART ABOUT

PCOS IS THE DIAGNOSIS Bitter truth: Eating disorder victims are more prone to PCOS. Does PCOS cause terrible trouble? PCOS is an example of how a disease translates into unfounded and dangerous levels of stigma and fear. PCOS means you have cysts in your ovaries today, they may disappear weeks or months later after improving your fundamental health. Most cysts do not require a knee jerk reaction as they are not cancerous, or in danger of bursting and causing terrible trouble. ªª Forty percent of Indian women are affected by, PCOS. ªª PCOS is like an epidemic especially among girls in the age bracket of 16 to25. ªª Primarily affects women of reproductive age. ¾¾ THE PROGNOSIS PCOS is a complex metabolic disorder whose effective treatment is like a challenge. If treated during early adolescent period it could be easily cured. Ayurveda tailors your treatment plan to create best results. Ayurveda believes that Apana vata bioenergy which carries on the important function of clearing the debris flushed out from the uterus periodically every month is switched off. There is occlusion in the pelvic cavity because of this and the other two Bioenergy pitta Bioenergy and kapha Bioenergy end up in sabotaging this area and crippling it up further. ¾¾ VATA BIOENERGY PREDOMINANCE: Painful periods, severe menstrual irregularity, low weight, hyper pigmentation and disturbed metabolic activity. ¾¾ PITTA BIOENERY PREDOMINANCE: Hair loss, acne, periods in clots, heart problems, flow extends for days and high blood pressure. ¾¾ KAPHA BIOENERGY PREDOMINANCE: Excess body and facial hair, obesity, infertility, diabetic tendencies, low metabolism, water retention in the tissues and menstrual irregularity. ¾¾ Approach to PCOS works on four levels. LEVEL -1: Improve your fundamental health by restoring the integrity of your system to function better: We perform major house cleaning programmes twice a year or sometimes even more. Our vehicle also needs periodic oil changes and oiling of the system to function better. Take care and extra precautions of your body too by periodic maintenance. Panchakarma therapy an eliminatory process essentially designed in Ayurveda helps you to do this. Pancha refers to number 5 and the karma means therapy used to expel the accumulated toxins in our body. Panchakarma measures are designed in such a way that they have some degree of specification to eliminate toxins accumulated in the upper channels by therapeutic vomiting, to eliminate toxins from the intestines by therapeutic purging and to expel the toxins from the colon by therapeutic enemas

30

www.bangalorehealthtv.com

(2types).The errhine therapy nasal therapy clears the toxins in the head. These essential therapeutic practices aim to cleanse the channels of the body to keep metabolic function at a peak. ¾¾ LEVEL 2: Normalize Agni – (metabolism): Metabolism is the body’s process of breaking down nutrients and converting them to energy to keep running, to make the heat beat, kidney function, make our glands like pancreas, pituitary and thyroid function better and so on. Every individual’s metabolism works the same way but the rate at which it metabolizes the nutrients is unique to every individual. If our metabolism is high we are able to metabolise more efficiently than one with a slower metabolism who do not burn all the calories taken in as a result of which the extra calories are saved and then converted to fat. Ayurvedic formulations like Hingu vachadi churnam increase the size of our cells fuel-burning furnaces so our metabolic rate rises. This with dedicated routine and positive activity in our daily lives becomes essential part of this programme on battling the decreasing speed of our metabolism. Equating fitness with the same routine as brushing our teeth or eating our food should be our norm. ¾¾ LEVEL 3: Clear obstruction: Pathology in PCOS is due to obstruction in the pelvic cavity. Accumulation of wastes in the body weakens our system and gives rise to an internal environment conductive for a disease and a fertile ground for infection by germs. The wastes produced from food items consumed and absorbed are excreted from the human body in the form of stool, urine and sweat. If wastes are not excreted they start circulating in the blood, accumulate in the blood vessels and eventually clog them. The supply of oxygen and essential nutrients to the cells is switched off and they become inactive in reproduction. Eventually the function of every organ is impaired resulting in further impairment of the immune response causing a wide range of degenerative ailments that grow steadily worse. Keeping your bowel function right with virechana therapy holds the top priority to regularize functions of the genital system. Apana vata bioenergy which is responsible for constricting and tightening of the muscles of the uterus and blood vessels is responsible for flushing out the menstrual fluid during menstruation. But if the channels are obstructed by accumulation of toxins they need to be addressed in a special way. Medicated enema called Dosha hara bastis to clear this obstruction straightens out the function of Apana vata bioenergy, a treatment option at level 3. ¾¾ LEVEL 4: Management of PCOS with Ayurvedic formulations tend to be much gentler to the system: They work not only to help relieve symptoms but also to help return the body to balance and equilibrium. They are customized for the individual and often modified as per the needs of the patient. Treatment for PCOS is dependent on the patients’ desired goal of either menstrual regularity or removal of excess facial hair or correction of scalp-male pattern baldness. If treated during early adolescent period PCOS could be managed and maintained that way by healthy weight maintainance, keeping metabolism well tuned, eating right and leading a healthy lifestyle.

¾

WHAT IS STAMMERING? Stammering is an interrupted way of speaking, blocking of speech or repetition of the same letter or word. If the normal flow of speech is hampered in any way, it is called stammering. It may be in the form of mind block, hesitation, blocking, taking more time to utter any word, repeating either any particular starting sound or the word itself, elongating more than normal and distracted sound due to unnecessary force. It is an in-coordination among respiratory, vocal cords and articulatory mechanisms. Stammering is speech which is hesitant, stumbling, tense or jerky to the extent that it causes anxiety to the speaker. There is a wrong belief amongst a section of the people that stammering means severe speech problem. It may be minor, medium or severe. The extent of problem varies from person to person and even varies from situation to situation for a particular person. There is no difference between stammering and stuttering. Stammering is commonly used in UK and India also. Stuttering is the term used in US and some other countries. Incorrect pronunciation is not

stammering, it is called lisping. ¾ Causes of stammering Stammering develops mostly from the early age of a person. It is an acquired behaviour not inherited. It is usually caused by multiple factors and their interactions. Some of the causes that lead to the development of stammering are : ª Childish imitation of other stammerers either in the family or outside. ª An after effect of certain serious illness. ª Feeling of insecurity in the early age. ª Strict, rude & rough guardianship. ª Sudden physical or mental shock. ª Shy or introvert nature from childhood. ª Very fast speaking habit. ª Parental fights and misunderstandings. ª Disturbances and quarrel in the family. ª Fast thought process. ª Lack of co-ordination between thinking & speaking. ª Stiff competition in all spheres of life. ª If one is bilingual or multilingual, confusion may occur to the child while speaking. ª Side effects of strong medicinal action. ª Subjected to tremendous fear and tension from childhood. ª If the child is left alone for some time without parents or familiar people. ª When a second child is born in the family. ª Seeing horrifying scenes in real life or in movies. ª If the child is weak or sickly. ª When pressurised by parents to achieve difficult and high targets. ª When forcibly changed from left handed behaviour to right-handed. ª The child tries to attract attention and stammers when neglected. ª If the teacher is strict and always punishes and terrorizes the child. ª Humiliation in front of friends and class mates. ª If one is frightened of every little thing. ª Hurting one’s head due to some www.bangalorehealthtv.com

31

accident, specially the back side of the head and ªª If parents and family members all talk very fast, the child is unable to compete with their speed and thus faulters. ªª Whatever may be the reason for developing stammering, it occurs due to excitement tension fear nervousness hesitation anticipation of blocking and lack of confidence & courage to speak. ¾¾ How stammering develops and complicates In most of the cases, stammering develops from an early age (from 3 to 10 years). Neither does it start by birth nor is there any physical defect. Plenty of causes are responsible for its occurrence which is given in the book ‘Stammering A Sure Cure’. It usually starts with minor problems but gradually complicates due to certain circumstances, ignorance, unconducive environment and wrong parenting. When a child begins to stammer, the family members and others draw the attention of the child to it and make the child conscious of his disfluency. The child, at this stage, is not mature enough to deal with this sudden problem and the constant awareness of the difficulty make it even worse. Different advices and guidance from an array of people makes the child confused as to what to follow and what not. The child feels guilty and helpless if the parents are over-anxious, sad and dejected. The problem gets triggered if they discuss these problems in front of the child. So the child starts hiding it by avoiding, substituting, hesitating and the confidence level dips down gradually. There is a lack of co-ordination between thought and speech as the child is battling in his mind to cover up his problem. Fear, nervousness and tension develop with the constant anticipation of blocking. Slowly the problem becomes so acute that the child becomes branded as a ‘STAMMERER’ for life. Naturally depression, dejection and inferiority complex encircle the child. Being small, they are unable to express their feelings freely. They want to express so many things but pulls back because of the fear and anticipation of problem. They are caught in the vicious cycle of being subjected to teasing, mockery, humiliation and under-estimation. Their negative beliefs and pessimistic thoughts get pampered. With the passage of time, the initially minor problem worsens and the child loses confidence in himself that their problem cannot be cured. All these things which start in the childhood continue lifelong. ¾¾ IS IT HEREDITARY OR BY BIRTH? Stammering generally develops from the childhood. A child learns to talk in a gradual manner like: first the child listens to sounds and learns to respond to them, then he tries to imitate and produce sounds which develops into short words. Then they learn telegraphic speech and finally frame proper sentences. In this manner a child learns to speak. If some elders in the family is having this problem (may be either parents, elder brother or sister), a

32

www.bangalorehealthtv.com

child, after listening to or by imitating that person, may develop this bad habit. Sometimes two or three generations of stammerers are found in a family. All this makes the people believe that stammering must be due to heredity which is absolutely a wrong notion and myth. A section of the people goes too far to the extent that they assume that the problem has developed by birth. If the belief is based on these things, then the people become more frustrated, dejected and hopeless by thinking that it is a life time problem. They have to suffer as long as they are alive. In fact if hope is there everything is there. But if the situation is totally hopeless, everything is lost. Moreover, no knowledge is gathered by the people due to lack of books, scientific literature for the lay persons, articles on this matter or resources. Furthermore, they come to the conclusion that it is impossible to cure, it’s a curse from God or a result of bad Karma of past lives. Plenty of free advices are poured in from various sections of “not-so-knowledgeable” people, whose wrong advices and discouraging statement makes a stammerer totally frustrated and hopeless. He is forced to believe that there is no hope, no cure and only a dark future awaits him. They become more and more depressed, lose enthusiasm in life and altogether miss out on all the pleasures of life. Unfortunately, very few people are there to motivate and offer correct guidance to go ahead in life. But the fact is that stammering is not a disease. Neither is it by birth nor due to any physical defect or disorder. It is purely a psychological and a bad habitual problem. ¾¾ Does it get cured on its own? It is not that stammering once developed is not curable at all. But the percentage is so negligible that it is a gamble to wait for the lucky chance to come. More importantly, if anyone gets cured at a later age like in 20’s or 30’s or later, then so many golden years of one’s life become a nightmare. This time will never come back and there is no way to compensate for it. The formative period of anybody’s life-childhood, early schooling, adolescent and afterwards are the stages in which to build up one’s personality, skill and

other necessary essential qualities for a bright life and a successful career. But during those vital periods, if one is forced to stay in the shell, avoiding people and engage in all other self-defeatist behavior, naturally it affects one’s success and achievement in life. So it is always important that without waiting for the fortunate day when it may or may not get cured on its own, take immediate action to solve the most complicated problem of a person’s life – stammering.. ¾¾ Whether stammering is curable, controllable or incurable? The general idea that prevails in the minds of maximum stammerers is that stammering is a disease; there must be some physical defects or disorder. That is why it is considered incurable. This is quite natural as many people have tried and failed to relieve themselves of this problem. The various ineffective suggestions and solutions given lead to further frustration and helplessness and they become passive sufferers accepting it to be a life-long curse that they have to live with for eternity. Let me clarify the fact that ‘STAMMERING IS NOT A DISEASE’. It is a psychological and a bad habitual problem. It is psychological in the sense that it is there only in the mind and not in any of the speech organs. The bad habitual problem comes because of fear, nervousness, excitement, tension and anticipation of

problems in the mind and the person tries to speak in a defective manner. Neither it starts from birth nor is there any genetic problem. Your speaking machine is basically in perfect condition. You only have to make certain adjustments in the operation of this machine. Consider the fact that when you talk alone, you talk fluently. Most of the time you have no problem with severe stammering and can also sing perfectly. If it is a physical defect, the problem of speech would have been always everywhere irrespective of the situation, place and person. The problem lies in the mind, not in the mouth. The way you think makes all the difference. If you allow negative thoughts and thoughts anticipating stammering more and more, then the problem becomes very complicated and it gets deep-rooted in your mind that stammering is not curable. Along with this, avoidance to speak, staying always in the shell, depressed mood, negative and pessimistic thoughts increase the problem rapidly. When this state of mind continues for several years, the entire speech mechanism is in a disorderly and disorganized manner. Negative and pessimistic thoughts start commanding your mind. All this definitely makes a simple problem a very complicated life-long problem. It is absolutely true that it can be curable. It is equally a fact that it is not the job of any ordinary person with just random commonsensical technique or two to cure it. It can quite easily be cured in the hand of a highly experienced, well-qualified, dedicated person who can actually guide you with the effective practices and techniques, understanding correctly the kind of problem you have and is inspirational and motivational. It is needless to say that an Ex-Stammerer is the right kind of person for doing all these quite effectively for they too have lived with what you are going through. To the guardians: Inspite of giving excellent education and other facilities to your children, unless you take prompt steps to cure the stammering problem of your children, everything will be wasted. They will also blame you life long for not taking immediate steps for curing their problem. So please take stammering cure as a first priority since the benefits of a transformed stammering-free life is priceless. Cure is for all ages

Spray vodka on mildew and mould infested part in the bathroom and wash after 5 minutes to get a disinfected bathroom. Remove dirt, grime and scratches from mirrors by cleaning them using a warm solution of tea water, detergent and a little vinegar. Clean long narrow vase by dissolving 1 or 2 tablets of Pepfizz or any effervescent tablet or powder in water. The bubbles help in sparkling them clean. To clean erasers, dab a little nail-polish remover on them and rub off the dirt with a cotton cloth. Aim your hair-dryer at those dusty stack of books and those decorations to save on time for cleaning. Make those white marble surface snow white by cleaning them with a little milk and leaving it to dry for an hour. Follow up with soap wash to see the stains many times lighter. Enjoy sex when stressed

Sex and stress also triggers similar physiological reaction: heart rate and blood pressure spike, respiration quickens, pupil, pain threshold rises

Sex can be a great stress reliever, with the physical and emotional release, social support, and release of endorphins. However, at times stress can affect one’s libido. When excessive stress leads to low sex drive, sex sometimes goes by the wayside. Sex and stress also trigger similar physiological reactions: Heart rate and blood pressure spike, respiration quickens, pupils, dilate, pain threshold rises. Both are total mind-body orchestrations of emotion, sensation and neuropathies, the molecules of emotion that sir body and brain. Sex requires all of your neuro-chemistry to be balanced. Stress can unhinge any of the four phases of the sex cycle – appetite, arousal, orgasm or resolution and detail the subtler chemical messengers of sensuality. Chronic stress disrupts other erotic body chemistry as well. Launch your fight-or-fight response too often, and you can end up with low levels of cortical and testosterone, two hormones needed for sexual arousal, as well as oxytocin. Oxytocin – a hormone that causes uterine

contractions and feelings of arousal and is essential for orgasm – may also be inhibited by stress. Enjoy sex when stressed: Sex can be a great stress reliever, with the physical and emotional release, bonding, and release of endorphins. However, at times stress can actually prevent us from being ‘in the mood’. With the libido-dampening effects of excessive stress, sex sometimes goes by the wayside. Starting with outside the bedroom and moving in, here are some quick tips on how to get yourself in the mood when stressed, so you can enjoy the benefits of sex ¾¾ Here’s how ÂÂ Eat a Healthy Diet. What you put into your body can make you feel energized and light, or sluggish and stressed. A healthy, balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, protein and whole foods can actually reduce your stress level, increase your energy, and help your body look and feel better. This will go a long way toward getting you in the mood. ÂÂ Exercise. You may think you’re too busy or tired to exercise, but exercise can actually give you more energy, and even 20 minutes three times a week can make a difference in your energy level and overall health. You can pilates while you watch T.V., or skip the television altogether and go for a walk. Either way, your body will feel more energized, you’ll have more positive hormones flowing in your blood, and you’ll be happier with your body. These are definite turn-ons. ÂÂ Reduce Obligations In Your Life. If you get organized, prioritize only important commitments in your life and say no to other activities that take up your time, you can reduce the overall level of stress you experience in your life, and you’ll have more time and energy on your hands and will be less stressed. This all contributes to a healthy libido. ÂÂ Find Help. I don’t (necessarily) mean therapy, but if you can hire people to do things that take up time and energy in your life, like cleaning your house and doing busywork, you’ll also have less to stress about. It might be more expensive in the www.bangalorehealthtv.com 36

short run, but you’ll most likely be more productive in the long run, which will offset the cost, and you can spend your time on the things in life you enjoy, like sex! ÂÂ Get Enough Sleep. Sleep deprivation can wreak havoc on your entire system and make you feel more stressed. If you can’t get enough sleep at night, you might try a power nap to achieve some of the same benefits. This could help you have more energy for nighttime activities. ÂÂ Use Stress Relievers. If you have a regular practice of one or a few stress-relieving activities like meditation or yoga, you can reduce the stress and tension you feel in your body and mind throughout the day. Having some of the weight of tension lifted, you’ll feel freer and more able to express yourself sexually. ÂÂ Have A Good Laugh. It’s often said that laughter is the shortest distance between two people. Laughter is also an excellent stress reliever and delivers great benefits to your body and soul. Try to unwind with a funny t.v. show or book, or make it a point to share some laughs with the one you love. ÂÂ Get Connected. Sometimes when we’re stressed and busy (especially after a new baby or other major change), it can cause us to feel more detached in our relationships. If you make it a point to find time for emotionally nurturing conversations, you’ll feel more connected and most likely more amorous with your partner. Also, if you talk about what stresses you and get it off your chest, you won’t be burdened by the excess stress your problems bring, and you’ll feel closer to your partner. Unresolved relationship issues can lead to low libido. ÂÂ Set The Mood. Music, aromatherapy, and a soothing environment can all help set the tone for relaxation and romance. A little preparation can yield some great results! ÂÂ Start Slow. You might want to start by trading massages, which can really loosen you and your partner up and release pentup tension while helping you feel more connected. Then see where things lead… Tips: It may take a while for “that loving’ feeling’ ” to come back. Be patient with yourself, and let things progress naturally. Remember that romance, physical connection and even playfulness are also important in a relationship, and all help lead to a stronger sexual relationship. Conversely, sex in the context of a bad relationship (or no relationship) won’t necessarily make you feel better, and could actually create more stress. That’s not what I’m recommending If you try these suggestions and still find yourself with a low libido, you may be suffering from an undiagnosed health problem or perhaps be dealing with some emotional ‘stuff ’ or relationship issues. Don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor or a couple’s counsellor, who can help with these issues.

On 11th of April 2013, Brian Mark Launched The First Branch in Bangalore : Alpha Brain Mark. A scientific test called DMIT ( Dermatoglyphics Multiple Intelligence Test ) which will tell people what is their naturally strong Intellegence. Dermatoglyphics is derived from the ancient Greek words derma = “skin” & glyph = “carving” is the scientific study of fingerprints. This term was coined by Dr. Harold Cummins - the father of American fingerprint analysis; even though the process of fingerprint identification had already been used for several hundred years. Dermatoglyphics is the study of the pattern in fingers. These patterns are unique and are heavily linked with one’s genetic composition and are closely related to our nervous system. We are able to discover our congenital intelligence, character traits and unknown potential through Dermatoglyphics. Dermatoglyphics can reveal our intrinsic qualities and talents Multiple Intelligence – The Concept: Dr. Howard Gardner introduced in his book ‘Frames of Mind’, that man has at least eight intelligences, and everyone has a different scale of those intelligences. There are 8 types of Multiple Intelligences whose presence and percentage in the brain differs from person to person.

The technology also has shown that unborn babies open their eyes at 18 weeks, challenging conventional beliefs that such actions didn’t occur until 26 weeks. As a result of this advance in technology, some researchers have concluded that fetal development consists of more complex human behaviours than previously believed. This is a recent development and it remains to be seen how such information is used by doctors, expectant parents and those engaged in ongoing debates about the ethics of abortion. One traditional RO requires 40 liters of raw water to produce 10 liters of pure and drinkable water, so you can very well imagine how much water is being flushed away daily in Bangalore Realizing this huge problem country wide, Kent RO systems Limited, the brand synonymous with Pure drinking water has come out with a new Water Purification Technology which indeed a biggest source to save wastage of drinking water at house hold level The new RO technology which has been designed and invented by Kent RO systems’ R & D Team, successfully remove harmful chemical like arsenic and other dissolve impurities and ensure 0% water wastage during the purification process. The new patented technology by KENT RO is world’s first such technology and prove to be a stepping stone in the direction of water conservation and safe drinking water together especially in the locations like Bangalore and outskirts areas where households largely depends upon tankers and ROs. The first product equipped with this technology Kent Supreme, was launched by Mr. Mahesh Gupta, Chairman, KENT RO Systems Ltd in Bangalore. Kent Supreme differs from others by achieving innovation through its patented technology. While the existing RO products takes 40 liters of raw water to produce 10 liters of RO water i.e. 75 percent water wasted in the process, on the other hand, the Kent designed Supreme is capable of recovering 100 percent water in use. A standard four-member family needs 25 litres of water daily for drinking and cooking purposes. To get that 25 litres, the traditional RO filter uses up 75 -100 litres hard water. so on an average the 5 lakh homes throwing away 50 litres on an average per day per household, the total waste is a staggering 2.5 crore litres daily at the city fringes. Launching Kent Supreme, Mr. Mahesh Gupta, Chairman, Kent RO Systems Ltd., said “With families increasingly focusing on living a healthy lifestyle and avoiding potential health risks due to contaminated water, the market for water purifiers in India is growing at an amazing rate. Also, acute shortage and depleting groundwater levels together

have led to an upsurge in demand for water treatment products that helps save water by reducing wastage. The 0% water wastage range of water RO purifiers from Kent provides ultimate peace of mind for people who want to drink pure, clean water without wasting even a single drop.” As per a recent Asian Development Bank report, India’s water security for the year 2013 has been labeled as hazardous, therefore it becomes increasingly important to preserve water in all possible manners. “Aiming to address the water wastage concern in India, with this launch Kent R.O. reiterates its commitment towards its customers by understanding and catering to their specific needs through innovation in technology,” added Mr Gupta. In India, the greatest threat to human health arises from drinking water contaminated with arsenic and to address this threat the Government of India in the recent budget has made provision of Rs 1400 crore for water purification plants. Most water purifiers currently available in the Indian market employ Reverse Osmosis purification process, however this process results in loss of 80% of water as they use almost 40 litre of raw water to produce 10 liter of drinkable water, so this technology will be able to address the issue significantly. Kent’s new patented technology in domestic RO Purifier recovers 40 litre of water out of 40 litre of raw water thus ensuring 0% water wastage. The innovative product features a computer controlled process where in the membrane is washed automatically and thereby more than 50% of purified water is recovered while guarantying a minimum of one year life of the membrane. The balance rejected water is stored in a separate ‘Reject Water Tank’ which can then be utilized by consumers for washing utensils, moping floor or gardening. The net is result is 0% water wastage. The product will be manufactured at Kent’s world class RO manufacturing facility in Roorkee. As per ASSOCHAM, erratic and poor quality of water supplied to the masses by the civic authorities has provided tremendous scope for water purifier market in India which is likely to touch Rs 7,000 crore by 2015 from the current level of about Rs 3,200 crore. Water purifier segment in India is growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 25 per cent and is largely driven by rising sales of low-cost variants triggered by extreme shortage of drinking-water and dwindling water table which has created huge gap in demand-supply of clean water. www.bangalorehealthtv.com
