TOP TIPS TO TREAT AND PREVENT CATARACTS VISION

Vitamin C supplementation can halt the progression of cataracts and may improve vision. In one study, 450 patients with cataracts were placed on a nutritional program that included 1,000 mg of vitamin C per day, resulting in a significant reduction in cataract development. Though similar patients had previously required surgery within four years, in the patients treated with vitamin C only a small handful required surgery, and in most patients there was no evidence that the cataract progressed over the eleven-year period of the study. The lenses of the eye require much higher concentrations of vitamin C than those found in the blood - at least twenty times more - and by keeping blood vitamin C levels elevated, you make it easier for the body to concentrate vitamin C into the lens. Studies of patients going in for cataract surgery showed that dosages of at least 1,000 mg per day were required to increase the concentration of vitamin C in the lens of the eye.

T

he lens of the eye is normally crystal clear. But damage to the proteins in the lens can cause it to become cloudy and opaque. The result is a cataract. Cataracts are the leading cause of impaired vision in the United States, affecting more than five million people today. This number is sure to increase dramatically with the aging babyboomer population, as most people over the age of sixty have some degree of cataract formation. There are many factors that can contribute to or cause cataracts: eye disease or injury, diseases such as diabetes, mellitus, and exposure to toxins and ultraviolet light. Heavy metals, such as cadmium, can cause damage to eye tissues and can prevent antioxidants such as zinc from binding to enzymes. Cigarette smoke is a leading source of cadmium. In many cases, cataracts are simply part of the aging process, the result of years of cumulative free-radical damage. Many cataracts can be repaired through surgical replacement with an artificial lens. But the best strategy is to prevent cataracts from forming in the first place by tuning up the body’s defense mechanisms. The sooner you begin, the better the results. Once a cataract forms, dietary and nutritional strategies can’t eliminate the problem, but they can help to slow down the rate at which it progresses. You can reduce free-radical formation by avoiding fatty foods, especially fried foods. High salt intake is also associated with cataracts. In contrast, a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, calcium, folic acid, and vitamin E provides nutrients that protect against cataracts. To quench free radicals that do crop up, the tissues in your eye need adequate levels of key antioxidants. The higher your levels of these substances, the lower your risk of cataracts.

There are some other important factors for preventing cataracts that you might wish to consider too. Glutathione peroxidase is an enzyme that is normally found in high concentrations in the lens. It neutralizes hydrogen peroxide, a free radical found in the fluid of the eye. People with cataracts typically lack sufficient glutathione peroxidase and have hydrogen peroxide levels up to twenty-five times higher than normal. You can boost your glutathione peroxidase supply by making sure you get enough selenium and vitamin E. these nutrients work together as an antioxidant team to neutralize hydrogen peroxide. Flavonoid-rich extracts is also an excellent antioxidant protection for the lenses. Among the best are flavonoid-rich extracts from bilberry, grape seed, and Ginkgo biloba. One recent study found that bilberry extract plus vitamin E stopped the progression of cataracts in forty-eight out of fifty patients. HEALTH/NUTRITION HEALTH

LOW COST ALTERNATIVE TO “Hello...I’ve been anxious to let you know that the article (front page) in your Oct.’07 issue has certainly helped my business. My webmaster has even posted it on the homepage of my web site – and, it’s brought nothing but the best information concerning Life Sources, Inc. to the public than any other publication in quite sometime. I want to take this opportunity to thank your whole team there, “naturally you for making this possible”-– and, a special “hi” to Dr. Donna for writing such a fantastic article. You folks are the best.

Dear Health & Fitness Magazine,

Approximately 30-50% of all my new patients became aware of my services through my ads in Health & Fitness Magazine. This has been a fairly consistent pattern since I began advertising with you around 13 years ago. If I were to count all the referrals from these new patients I would say that Health & Fitness Magazine has been responsible for helping me build 50% of my patient base. In all my years of practice no advertising has ever come close to these statistics. What is great about most of the patients that have heard about me from Health & Fitness Magazine is that they are truly interested in improving their health. They tend to refer other people who are also interested in health and fitness. I would highly recommend any health-related business to advertise with Health & Fitness Magazine – it’s well distributed throughout Sacramento & targets only people who are truly interested in improving their health. Thank you, Health & Fitness Magazine for helping me reach Sacramento residents that are in need of my services.

10 THINGS I WISH I KNEW WHEN I FIRST GOT DIABETES, PT. 2

This article is a continuation from last month in a three-part series.

By Kevin Kent

5) IF MANAGED PROPERLY BEING DIABETIC CAN ACTUALLY IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH.

This is one of those, get out what you put in, situations but I honestly believe being diabetic for the past 13 years has actually improved my overall health. Because of diabetes I exercise more, eat better, and drink less. I do know a few diabetics out there who neglect their diabetes but for me I decided to head down a different path. It has been my experience with most diabetics that we are significantly more knowledgeable about nutrition and our bodies than your average individual. Some of this is by choice and some of it is out of selfpreservation. In order to adequately care for your diabetes, you will need to learn the nutritional information of foods you eat, limit your intake of sugar and carbohydrates, maintain a regular exercise schedule, and have regular blood tests and eye exams. All of which will hopefully lead you down a long diabetes complication free life.

6) DIABETES AS A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION PRETTY MUCH ELIMINATES ANY CHANCE OF BEING ACCEPTED INTO A PRIVATE INSURANCE PLAN. Hopefully this is something that changes with one of the many health care reform bills being discussed in Washington but since there is no guarantee change will happen I will discuss this topic anyway. If you are diabetic and have insurance through your employer, the insurance company is required to admit you to their coverage under

what is usually called “Guarantee Issue Insurance”. What this means is if a health insurance plan is described as “guaranteed issue,” it means that applicants cannot be turned down for coverage based on their health status. Most job-based group health plans offer coverage on a guaranteed issue basis. That being said, if you decide to leave your employer’s insurance coverage and seek an individual health insurance plan you are in for an uphill battle. I was considering leaving my current job a few years back and looked into private insurance. At the time I was 24 with no diabetic complications or other health risks, and a non-smoker. I applied to 10 different individual health insurance plans and was rejected by every single one on the basis of my pre-existing condition. At this point, at least where I live in Illinois, any diabetic attempting to secure a individual health insurance policy in all likelihood will be denied. As I mentioned this will potentially be changed with the upcoming health care legislation. Most, if not all, of the legislation being proposed included provisions that all applicants must be granted insurance regardless of any pre-existing condition they may have.

Here’s hoping....

CAN THIS VITAMIN

IMPROVE VISION? A

were taking the vitamins and hadn’t developed any new disease.

Age related macular degeneration is a disease linked to getting older that slowly, almost imperceptibly destroys sharp central vision. This is the vision you need to see things clearly, as well as do some basic daily tasks like reading, watching TV, driving.

But the subjects taking the B vitamins and folic acid had a 34% lower risk of any AMD, and a 41% lower risk of AMD with vision loss as compared with the placebotaking group.

There are two forms of AMD, wet and dry and the type you have will determine the treatment you’ll use to preserve your sight and keep your eyes as healthy as possible. For the research, the 5,000 subjects, all women over 40 years old and without signs of age related macular degeneration, were randomly assigned to take a combination of 2.5 milligrams of folic acid, 50 milligrams of vitamin B6 and one milligram of B12 (higher levels than the current daily recommended doses), or a placebo every day. According to study author William Christen, folic acid, B6 and B12 are known to reduce blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that has been linked, if blood levels are high enough, to a greater risk of age related macular degeneration. The subjects the team used in this work were already participating in a study that was investigating using B vitamins for cardiovascular disease, and all the subjects had heart disease or at least three risk factors for it at the start of the study. Determinations on their eye health were based on examinations of medical records or responses to questionnaires, there were no rigorous eye examinations or retinal photos taken as part of the research. During the 7 years of follow up, the subjects answered yearly questionnaires to be sure they

about AMD, you might want to talk with your own healthcare team about including B vitamins into your supplementing plans. As water-soluble vitamins, you need to replenish your resources each day. There are also ample natural sources of B vitamins that you might want to include in your diet.

During the study, 137 new cases of AMD were diagnosed, 70 of these caused significant vision loss.

The researchers believe the benefits of the vitamin therapy didn’t appear until about two years after starting treatment - so this is no quick fix to be sure. And even though the subjects in the study were women, the findings of the benefits of vitamin B likely apply to all older Americans. “The trial findings ... are the strongest evidence to date in support of a possible beneficial effect of folic acid and B vitamin supplements in AMD prevention,” write the study authors, including William Christen an associate professor of medicine. The work appears in the February 2009 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine though more research will be needed on other groups of subjects to help find the right level of vitamins needed to benefit the eyes. Current estimates suggest that 1.75 million people have the advanced form of AMD, and another 7.3 million are in the early stages of disease.

recent Harvard Medical School study shows that women who took vitamin B6 and B12, as well as folic acid, had a reduced risk of age related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of blindness in older Americans. VIEWPOINT INSPIRED Hey Holidays, Three men die on Christmas Eve and go to heaven, where Saint Peter tells them, “In order to get in, you must each produce something representative of the holidays.” The first man digs into his pockets and pulls out a match and lights it. “This represents a candle of hope.” Impressed, Peter lets him in. The second man pulls out a tangle of keys and shakes them. “These are bells.” He’s allowed in too. “So,” Peter says to the third man, “What do you have?” The third man proudly shows him a red scarf. “What does that have to do with Christmas?” asks Peter. “It’s Carol’s.”

to us, along with their associated meanings. Tend to entail sharing one’s blessings with and for others. The current economic conditions stress our esteem, sense of capability, and challenge our beliefs about success, blessings, and giving. The Christmas holidays in general do this, and this year is exceptionally challenging. Can provide some serenity or reassurance during challenging times … But I’m not sure that many of our holiday images, activities and contemporary traditions provide much in this arena.

RELATIONSHIPS

Dear Mitch, This time of year means family to my wife and me. But I swear, so many people seem to be so upset by the holidays, especially with families and significant others! A friend of ours seemed to be ok with her Fiancé having to temporarily relocate to South Carolina this summer, yet during these holidays she’s a mess! A number of our friends are saying this is their worst holiday season ever. And Mitch, I’m talking about peoples who’ve been adjusting to job losses or changes for six months to three years… Something about the holidays seems to be really messing with their heads. MACULAR DEGENERATION AND HEAVY By Jannette Barrett METALS

M

acular Degeneration is a condition that affects the macula part of the retina of the eye resulting in a disturbance to central vision. Although the exact etiology of the disease is unknown, it is believed that deterioration of the retina leads to a breakdown in the transmission of signals to the brain from the nerves and receptors of the eye. When the signals are unclear, the brain cannot correctly interpret the information it receives and there is a loss of the detail that allows us to read, recognize people, perform manual work or manage fine tasks such as threading a needle. A person with macular degeneration may experience blurred or decreased central vision, blind spots, wavy lines instead of straight and size distortion.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF MACULAR DEGENERATION, WET AND DRY. The onset of wet macular degeneration occurs when abnormal blood vessels, which have grown under the centre of the retina, bleed or leak and scar the retina. Macula damage may occur rapidly. It is not uncommon for wet macular degeneration to start in one eye and affect the other at a later time.

Macular degeneration is treated by laser surgery, photodynamic therapy where a drug is injected that destroys newly formed, abnormal blood vessels or injections, however, none of these treatments can restore the vision that has already been lost.

RISK FACTORS

There are a number of identified risk factors associated with AMD. Family history and age are thought to be the most common risk factors. People with outdoor occupations and continuous exposure to sunlight may also be at risk, particularly if their skin is lightly pigmented. Women seem to be at a greater risk than men. There are also environmental and behavioral factors such as smoking and obesity. Research cited below shows that a build up of toxic heavy metals can damage eye health

RESEARCH

The National Institute of Health and the National Eye Institute in the US, published the results of a random study of people with moderate and advanced AMD in the Archives of Opthalmology in 2001, entitled the AgeRelated Eye Disease Study. The study reported that a significant slowing of disease progression and preservation of sight could be achieved by taking dietary supplements containing highdose antioxidants and zinc.

eyes from 16 subjects. The study concluded the presence of lead and cadmium which had accumulated in the tissues and retinal pigment epithelium and choroid. Further study into the toxicity of these heavy metals and their possible role in eye disease was recommended.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

In addition to the medical treatments mentioned above, there are a number of common sense things we can do to help prevent the onset of macular degeneration. In order for high-dose antioxidants and zinc to be effectively absorbed into the body and to protect the eyes from heavy metals, it is firstly essential to detoxify the body. Published clinical trials have shown that when removing heavy metals and toxins, including pesticides and herbicides from the body safely and effectively, supplements will be more readily absorbed, the immune system may function more efficiently and normal blood pressure may be more easily maintained. Eating a healthy diet, including green leafy vegetables and fish, is also essential to good eye health. A healthy diet will help with weight control as will some regular exercise. Giving up smoking is critical for eye health.

VISION

Dry macular degeneration, which is the most common form, results from a gradual breakdown of cells in the macula leading to blurring of central vision. The onset of dry macular degeneration can be detected early by an optometrist because of the presence of small, yellowish spots, called drusen at the back of the eye. However, people who have drusen, may not have visual impairment or related symptoms. When dry macular degeneration advances due to damage to the retina and nerves, vision loss will occur.

Remember the most important step, to take a daily detoxifying shower on the inside to give your eyes the maximum chance for sustained health. Your body will love you! Jannette has researched health and well being issues for the past 20 years and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Health Promotion. Healthy eating, regular meditation, moderation in everything and taking the correct supplements can make an enormous improvement to the quality of our lives. Research published by Erie et al in 2005 in the American Journal of Opthalmology, measured the concentration of toxic heavy metals in the fluids and tissues of human eyes. Concentrations of lead, cadmium, mercury, and thallium in ocular tissues, ocular fluids, and blood were found in the autopsy of 30 JANUARY 2011

DIABETES:

GAIN CONTROL NOW, PART1 HEALTH

By Dr. Donna

Hospitals don’t have diabetic floors. But if they did, what type of patients would you see? Most likely, a roster that looked like this: Room 101: Male, 45 yrs old, Type 2 Diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, cataract surgery Room 102: Male, 18 yrs old, Type 1 Diabetes, newly diagnosed Room 103: Female, 35 yrs old, Pregnant, Gestational Diabetes with complications Room 104: Female, 28 yrs old, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Metabolic Syndrome Room 105: Male, 52 yrs old, Type 2 Diabetes, Gangrene, Stage 3 Kidney Disease Room 106: Female, 82 yrs old, Type 1 Diabetes, Heart Attack, Bacterial Infection Room 107: Female, 14 yrs old, Type 1 Diabetes, Ketoacidosis, Coma Room 108: Male, 68 yrs old, Hypoglycemia, dizziness, weakness, confused, shaky The variety of patients tells us that diabetes spares no age group and prefers no gender. It also tells us that diabetes is not something to pass off as just a little sniffle – of the 11 patients in the hospital rooms listed above, five of them are walking the fine line of life and death. The rest of them would tell you that life changed for the worst when they developed diabetes.

THE ANSWERS ALWAYS INCLUDE FIVE MAJOR COMPONENTS: 1 Immediate treatment 2 Diet control 3 Exercise 4 Supplementation 5 Weight control

1 IMMEDIATE TREATMENT

Without immediate treatment, a diabetic could end up in the grave. So don’t decide to be ‘brave’ and start natural treatments for diabetes when you have never studied the subject. Get professional medical attention, which may include diabetic drugs to control the high blood sugar levels from the medical profession, and then alternative medical help to start the healing process. Be smart, not sorry!

2 DIET CONTROL

Diabetes is a disorder of carbohydrate and fat metabolism. This means that you must make changes in the percentages of carbohydrate and fat in your diet. Diabetes causes metabolic changes to occur that allow the body to store fat. You must break this cycle if you want healing to occur.

Most Americans eat far too many carbohydrates in their daily diet. A breakfast of granola, banana, raisins, soy milk, and toast with butter contains a minimum of 120 grams carbohydrate. Diabetics must If the disease could have its say on who to select as its next victim, limit their carbohydrate intake to 35 to 60 grams carbohydrate each you would see that diabetes is not random and does not only focus on meal. Eating twice the amount of carbohydrates needed will create those with diabetics in the family. Instead, diabetes will select those an exceptionally high surge of insulin production in a Type 2 diabetic who may have other diabetics in the family AND include these types which further contributes to wear and tear on the pancreas. Too of people: many carbs eaten at a meal by a Type 1 diabetic can cause blood sugar r-PWFUPJOEVMHFJOQBTUBT QSPDFTTFEGPPE DBOEZ BOEDPPLJFT fluctuations that lead to diabetic coma. r"SFPWFSXFJHIU BOEFTQFDJBMMZUIPTFXIPBSFPCFTF r1SFGFSEPJOHBOZUIJOHFYDFQUFYFSDJTF BOEIBWFBMJGFTUZMF Learn more next month! ANSWERS CAN BE FOUND WITH LITTLE WORK

The good news is that we’ve been in the Information Age for over a decade now, and if you dig into the internet for a little study, you will find that those with diabetes don’t have to suffer serious complications at all! And some of you will even go the distance to achieve the immense satisfaction of saying to others, “I reversed my diabetes!”

(1) Mushrooms have been used for about 3000 years by man to boost immunity. Yes, they were used that far back in time, because it was known that they were a super food to boost the immune system and prevent illness and disease. They probably did not know the details about the immune system, but, they did know what was good for them.

(7) There are thousands of different edible types of mushrooms, and even more that are poisonous, so unless you are an expert on mushrooms it is probably better to stick with the better known varieties, like the Common Mushroom, Maitake Mushroom and Shiitake Mushroom. (8) Shiitake is one the most popular mushrooms in Japan and are also well known outside of Japan. They are available fresh or dried. (9) Maitake mushroom is another very popular type of mushroom in Japan. They are also available outside Japan. They are sometimes referred to as the king of mushrooms. These three types of mushrooms are very safe to eat and you can rest assured that they are very healthy and good for you, a natural super nutrition for your immune system. Veera YogaTruth, Love & Compassion, Through the Practice & Teachings of Yoga

W

COVER STORY

hen you pass Veera Yoga, located in the Nugget Plaza at 711 Pleasant Grove Blvd in Roseville, you might think it’s just another yoga studio on the map. Don’t! When you walk into this nonjudgmental space with octagonal shaped high ceilings, you’ll immediately feel welcomed and at home in a new community of like-minded people. “The word VEERA means warrior in Sanskrit. It is a spiritual warrior, one that fights for truth, love and compassion,” says Gangotri Garg, owner of Veera Yoga. “Veera is also short for Maha Veera, another name for the Indian monkey god, Hanuman, known for his strength while also embodying humility, devotion and love. Here at VEERA, we strive to embody these characteristics of Maha VEERA.”

Veera’s Founder

Gangotri Garg, owner of VEERA YOGA has been studying the philosophy of yoga for over 30 years. Early in her journey, she met her “guru” guru (spiritual teacher), Morari Bapu. Bapu’s teaching has remained constant over the years: Truth, Love & Compassion are the vital ingredients of humanity, of life, and of civilization. Each relationship, all our actions,

By Dr. Donna and every passing thought must adhere to and be anchored in these highest principles. They are not confined to any particular religion, nor are they attached to a specific time or place. They are as universal and as vital as the air we breathe. Gangotri’s love for these principles has spilled over into the mission for VEERA YOGA. She is determined to create a community around Truth, Love & Compassion through the practice & teachings of yoga.

How Does Yoga Impact Your Life? Gangotri is convinced that how yoga works is simple. “We breathe and flow through various postures on the mat. When a difficult posture comes, we work to stay present, maintain our breath, and even smile so that the uncomfortableness isn’t so bad. Then one day off the mat when life hits and you are able to let things slide off your shoulders, you realize the impact yoga is making on your life. This is the purpose of yoga. Your yoga mat is the training course for life.” “As yoga starts to come to life outside of the studio, you begin to realize that your potential is limitless. Your buttons are not easily pushed and you are able to respond to situations and people with truth, love and compassion.”

Veera Yoga Classes

FIRST TIME STUDENTS ENJOY 30 CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF YOGA FOR $39.

“It takes several classes before one identifies with the changes (physical, emotional, spiritual, etc) that are happening from yoga. With a continued practice however, transformation is just a few short months away!” Gangortri said. VEERA also offers a monthly Beginner’s workshop to allow new students a more relaxed environment to get used to the practice. In this two hour session, you will learn about the history and philosophy of yoga, we’ll break down some of the basic poses that you will experience in almost all of the classes you take at VEERA with hands on assists to ensure that you are able to feel the pose in your body, and then we’ll take you through a mini 10-15 min class so that you know what to expect when you come in for a regularly scheduled class. The next Beginner’s workshop is scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd from 1pm to 3pm and registration is available online at veerayoga.com. There are many more exciting events on the horizon at VEERA including yoga teacher training, yoga retreats & workshops

Compassion at Veera You’ll see and feel the truth, love, and compassion at Veera Yoga. Gangotri’s determination to express this to the community, was the inspiration for Karuna Corner. Karuna means compassion in Sanskrit. Karuna Corner is an area within the studio, the website and the monthly newsletters that posts compassionate acts on behalf of the studio and the teachers. This very young studio has already started to make a difference in the community through animal rescue & adoptions, fund raising for those in need, and for an organization that posts pictures of missing children in and around the community. Gangotri’s clients have nothing but positive things to say about Veera Yoga. Kim Prock, a Sacramentan, reports: “Last night was my first “real” yoga class. I have been practicing at home for about a year now. And let me just say, it is alot harder than it looks. I got a great workout last night, and I am feeling it this morning. My muscles feel alive and my mind is at ease. :) I had such a great experience! I haven’t felt this relaxed in a long time. All of the teachers were hands on, and very helpful. Thank you all for such an amazing and peaceful night.” A San Francisco woman, Donna, commented that the lobby of Veera Yoga is very welcoming with beautiful colors on the walls and a nice selection of clothing and mats and such. “The room in very nice. Mellow with a huge

SPIRITUALITY’S POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON STRESS RELIEF‌

As this New Year begins, there are many of us who set personal goals to make this year better than last year. As individuals, we are constantly striving to live more fulfilling and happier lives. Yet, we often get caught up in every day stresses. Stress not only affects our body and corrupts its natural functioning; it also affects our mind and spirit as well. Everyday, each of us experiences stress in various levels of severity and frequencyonce or several times per day. We have fight or flight reactions. But, our effort to discover the most useful deterrent against stress remains existent. Therefore, stress continues to be the foremost burden in our lives. Since its total obliteration is neither possible nor desirable, we can train ourselves to cope with stress in a positive manner utilizing our spirituality. The word `stress` is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “a state of affair involving demand on physical or mental energy. Stress is often a situation, which upsets the normal physiological and psychological functioning of an individual. Medical text refers to `stress` as perturbation of the body’s homeostasis. This intrusion on mind-body happens when it attempts to cope with constant changes in life. A `stressful` situation appears `relative` in nature. Stressful conditions are typically classified as “acute or “moderate. Acute stress experiences are often detrimental to our physical and psychological health. However, moderate stress level in several instances is normal and can be beneficial for overcoming personal struggles. Stress, however, is associated with every negative experience. Daily, we face various sources of stress and the common symptoms such as headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, eating disorder, allergies, insomnia, backaches, frequent cold and fatigue which can lead to diseases such as hypertension, asthma, diabetes, heart ailments, cancer, as well as anxiety and depression. A range of practices connected with the path of spirituality— meditation, breathing exercises, physical exercises (yoga practices), and practice of positive thinking help us to manage stress physically as well as mentally. Our spiritual practices help us to maintain self-control and a calmer mindset. Research has proven that mediation brings down stress levels, improves balance and provides calmness to the mind. Spirituality facilitates intra-personal relationships. You come to know and assess yourself more, and try to grow as a person. In this way, you grow to be increasingly proficient and competent in facing life’s various circumstances. Although, the common avenue that people use to pursue their religions/ spiritual journey is through faith communities, here are alternative ways that you can use your faith to reduce stress.

Be Intrinsic-Find a personal way to experience spirituality in a meaningful way for you. Some people do this through personal devotions, meditation practice, and prayer. Be Optimistic- Phrases such as “When God closes a door He opens a window, promotes a mindset of optimism. Research shows significant benefits of optimism, which include superior health, increased determination, improved emotional health and decreased stress levels.

Melissa M. Avitia, LCSW

Find the Lesson- Those who are more spiritual tend to see life’s stressful situations as a spiritual test of their strength, or even as a valuable lesson from God / or their spiritual figure. This can be a helpful distinction, since viewing a stressful situation as a challenge can make the situation feel less threatening. Thus, you are not as physically reactive to stress, and you may even identify more effective ways to cope. In turn, you are able to change a stressful situation into a path of a better life or greater personal growth. Research shows that those who engage in spiritual practices achieve greater relief from stress and benefit from better physical and psychological health as well as happier lives. Is GANODERMA Really the King of All Herbs? Part 2 HEALTH & NUTRITION

By Dr. Donna, Editor

W

hat brings an herb or food to the superior position of the title, King of All Herbs? Is it the effects that occur in the brain? Benefits on the colon? The immune system? Or the rejuvenative feelings? Or is it something else?

The Reishi mushroom, Ganoderma lucidum, has been known in China for its health benefitsfor hundreds of years. There, it’s called the King of Herbs. Ganoderma has adaptogenic properties that include the following, according to over 3 million web pages on its benefits: r1SPWJEFTNPSFFOFSHZ r/BUVSBMEFUPYJđDBUJPO r#PPTUTTUBNJOB r.FOUBMBMFSUOFTT r3FKVWFOBUJPO r4VQQPSUTUIFJNNVOFTZTUFN r0YZHFOBUFTUIFCPEZ r/FVUSBMJ[FTBDJESFBDUJPOGSPNDPĈFF r-FTTGBUJHVF

Let’s evaluate the medical research found on Pub Med together; then you decide for yourself if Ganoderma really deserves the title. Reduces Tumor Growth and Spread Journal: Biosci Biotechnol Biochem, June 2008 Findings: In a study where Lewis lung cancer cells were injected into mice after they were given cyclophosphamide, scientists tested whether or not the usual immune system depression would occur. Ganoderma suppressed the metastasis of the cells to the lung. Scientists concluded that by combining Ganoderma with cyclophosphamide, it was possible to obtain a reduction in the tumor growth and spread, and would be beneficial. Stopped Breast Cancer Cells Dead in Their Tracks Journal: Int J Mol Med, May 2008 Findings: The triterpenes from Ganoderma were tested against highly invasive human breast cancer cells. The ganoderic acids suppressed the growth and invasive behavior of the cells. Researchers concluded that Ganoderma could be a promising natural agent for therapy in those with invasive breast cancer. Metastasis Prevented by Ganoderma; Mechanism Discovered Journal: Carcinogenesis, Jan 2008 Findings: Researchers discovered how Ganoderma prevented

metastases to occur – by suppressing metalloproteinase 9 enzyme ability to phosphorylate an extracellular signalregulated kinase 1 / 2 through a medicinal constituent called lucidenic acid B. The constituent also inhibited NF-kappaB and activator protein-1’s DNA-binding activities in human liver cancer cells. Reishi Mushroom Holds Cells Tightly Together Journal: Phytotherapeutic Research Nov 2010 Findings: Scientists were on a search for herbs or botanicals that affect cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) at the Tai Sophia Institute in Laurel, Maryland. They searched the research studies and found that Ganoderma lucidum was amongst about a dozen herbs from around the world that had the ability to affect intercellular cell adhesion molecule, vascular cell adhesion molecule and integrin and selectin families of cell adhesion molecules. They concluded that botanical medicines may have the potential to provide therapy in those who had diseases involving CAMs. Ganoderma Prevented Itch Associated with Allergies Journal: J Pharmacological Science 2010 Findings: When an alcohol extract of Ganoderma lucidum was given to mice that had been sensitized with mosquito saliva, the Chinese mushroom suppressed scratching. The scientists found that the mechanism that is behind this is related to something happening in the body peripherally, not through the immune system’s mast cells and H1 histamine receptors. Medicinal Mushroom Found to Be Strong Antioxidant Journal: Phytotherapeutic Research October 2010 Findings: One of the favorite types of tests that scientists like to do is test foods and herbs for antioxidant activity. If a food or herb is found to be high in antioxidants, it can usually be counted on as a substance that eliminates damaging free radicals and prevents fats from oxidizing. One of the other benefits of antioxidants is that they may be antibacterial. Scientists in Serbia found high levels of antioxidants in Ganoderma extracts as well as strong antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. They concluded that this fungi is a potential source of antioxidative and antibacterial agents. This is some of the latest information on the “King of the Herbs.” What do you think? Does Ganoderma lucidum – Reishi Mushroom – deserve the title? For a free report on Medicinal Mushrooms, see www.GoodGanoderma.com/freereport.html

Grilling squash is a great way to bring out its amazing flavor and you can season young squash with herbs and olive oil for a healthy and mouthwatering side dish.

By Christine Szalay Kudra

Grill

Cut your squash down the middle, ensuring that the pieces are not too thick else, they will take too long to cook. Keep the pieces evenly sized. You might need to cut a winter squash or big squash into three or four pieces. Clean out the stringy part and seeds and rinse the squash pieces. Mix some olive oil with fresh herbs. Basil, oregano and cilantro work well and you should chop them finely. Brush the herby olive oil over the exposed squash flesh and put the squash directly on the grill, over a moderate to high heat.

How to Grill Squash For Succulent Results

If you like to make grilled fresh vegetables, you will find squash great for grilling. The best squash for grilling is one that is heavy, richly colored, and free of blemishes and bruises. Crookneck squash, zucchini, patty pan, and other kinds of summer squash should all be bright colored. Turban squash, spaghetti squash, Hubbard, butternut, and other kinds of winter squash should be deep colored and have a tough skin. Preparing the Squash for the

packages, you should grill these on the side of the fire or on an upper rack, turning them every few minutes so they cook evenly. You can also thread squash on to kabobs and cook them on there. When making grilled vegetables kabobs, use ingredients with similar cooking times so you do not end up with some undercooked pieces and some overcooked ones.

GrilledVegetableRecipe.com - The Veggie Side of Grilling

It is nice to get grill marks on the squash but watch it so that it does not burn. Because squash has a concave shape, this will help to steam the inside and trap moisture. You can also cut the squash into smaller pieces or combine it with other vegetables to make a grilled vegetables recipe. If you want to wrap chopped vegetables in foil JANUARY 2011

nowshoeing is a fun winter recreation activity whose popularity has stayed strong since its inception and right up through today. It’s also a popular and easy way to get around in snowbound areas during the winter. Nowadays, there are many types of snowshoes for many types of activities. Here’s a rundown of each type to help you choose the right snowshoes for your lifestyle and activity.

inches and 10x36 inches. The smallest snowshoes are usually for children and the middle sizes are usually best for women. Your weight will also be a consideration, as the heavier you are, the larger size of snowshoe you will likely need. You should also consider the weight you will be with your other equipment, skis, snowboard, backpack or other supplies you will be carrying. There are two types of bindings available, the free rotation and the limited rotation. In the limited rotation style, the toes do not go below the decking. In the free rotation the toes are freer. Free rotation bindings are preferred for running, racing and sometimes hiking. It’s best to try both styles and decide which is more comfortable for you.

RUNNING & AEROBIC STYLE

These snowshoes were built with lighter weight materials than normal snowshoes to allow for faster movement. They also feature an extra cleat or cleats for additional traction while you are running or walking fast. Also, the bindings will allow you to insert running or athletic shoes, so they lace up and cradle as well. There are actually snowshoe races, and this is the type of snowshoe that is used in that type of race. This type of snowshoe is right for anyone who will need to move fast or just wants to walk around town. These are not appropriate for snowshoeing in rugged terrain. MOUNTAINEER STYLE

Mountaineer style snowshoes are built much tougher and heavier than, say, running style snowshoes. This is for added traction and stability on steep and icy hills. They typically include larger crampons to achieve this added traction. The binding will also be able to accommodate larger shoes including climbing shoes and boots. Extra heavy duty material is used to create mountaineer style snowshoes, for better performance during different types of weather situations and various types of terrain. This also makes mountaineer style snowshoes the best choice for walking in deeper snow. Mountaineering snowshoes are the right choice for any serious snowshoeing enthusiast.

HIKING/RECREATION STYLE

This type of snowshoe tends to be the most popular as it is appropriate for hiking, backpacking and light to moderate terrains. Recreation style snowshoes are made to be comfortable, with ease of use

7 SKI TECHNIQUES TO

ONLINE SKI LESSONS

SPORTS & EXERCISE

LEARN TO SKI WELL T

he following fundamental drills are foundational to learn to ski well. While there are a variety of ski techniques, all use these 7 basics in one form or another. This is by no means an exhaustive list of exercises or drills, but they are the roots to learning to ski. Downhill skiing must of course be learned on the ski slopes. The following text will give you context, descriptions, and metaphors to give you a better understanding both before and after you actually ski.

ONE: SKIING ON ONE SKI If you’ve seen the Karate Kid, you’ll remember how Mr. Miyagi tells Daniel that he “must first learn balance!” Now, you won’t need to stand at the bow of a rowboat or get pummeled by ocean waves (you can if you wish). You will, however, need to practice skiing on one ski. Start on easy terrain such as the beginner’s area, and slowly traverse across the hill lifting up one leg. Do this until you are comfortable with either leg raised. Practice both legs equally. Simply cross the hill back and forth, gently descending. Next, when you’re comfortable, start straightening out your turns more directly downhill. Practice this drill in small increments. It may be awkward at first, but you’ll improve rapidly. TWO: SKATING This drill is exactly what it sounds like - skating. Just as in ice skating, you push off one inside edge of your skate to the other to move forward. You’ll just do this with skis on. On gentle terrain, push off the inside edges of your skis to propel/push yourself forward. You’ll notice that your skies with naturally form a V allowing you to push from the back (somewhat) to create the forward momentum. You want your skis to become an extension of your body. Just as a tennis racket is an extension of Andre Agassi or a golf club of Tiger Woods, you need to feel, know, and trust your skis. THREE: SIDE SLIPPING This drill is also just as it sounds. You’ll be slipping down the hill sideways.. Simply stand perpendicular on the hill (so you’re facing the woods or the side of the hill). The edges of your skis, which you can feel really well because you’ve practiced “Skating,” will hold you in place. While on gentle

terrain, slowly flatten your skis by relaxing your ankles to the point where you start “slipping” sideways downhill. Let yourself slip side away. Tighten your ankles to stop. Then start again. Practice this exercise facing both ways. Next - have a little fun and try slipping slightly forward by pressing your toes down while you flatten your skis. To slip backwards, lift your toes up. Once comfortable with this, try it on steeper terrain. FOUR: STEPPING We do this every day when we walk down the street. We put one foot in front of the other. We don’t lean too far forward or tilt backward - we walk in perfect balance. With this drill, you’ll just be walking with skis on. On gentle terrain, try stepping through a turn. Traverse slowly across the slope and prepare to step through another turn. What you’re doing in this exercise in training your body to lean forward (just like you do when you take a step). Just as you lean forward to begin walking down the street in perfect balance, you need to lean forward to get your body down the hill, while maintaining balance. Not an easy exercise to illustrate, but imagine taking tiny baby steps around a corner. You want your skis to stay parallel - avoid the “snow plow.” While the snow plow turn (also known as the wedge) may be helpful to brand new, or nervous skiers, stepping is “just as easy to learn.” The stepping exercise has the added benefits of not encouraging bad habits and helps you to learn to ski better faster. FIVE: SHUFFLING SKIS This lesson is similar to “Stepping,” except your skis are kept on the snow. Start by sliding one ski forward and the other back. It will be similar to Cross-Country skiing or using a NordicTrack Skier. On gentle terrain, shuffle your skis back and forth as you traverse the slope. You want to train your body (your hips specifically) to stay directly above your feet. When your hips are positioned above your feet, you have optimum control of your body and skis. SIX: RAIL ROAD TRACKS This is a bit more of an advanced drill that will take your skiing to new heights. Essentially you want to ski on the edges of your skis (by shifting your ankles) so you leave rail-road-track-like marks in

the snow. Start with wide a parallel stance tipping both ankles and knees while simultaneously engaging your ski edges. Traverse gentle across the slope, back and forth. This should be done on gentle terrain. SEVEN: PIVOT FLAT SKI Master this and your skiing will skyrocket! Start perpendicular on the hill (like you do with the “Side Slipping” technique), but release the edge of your skis by leaning your upper body across and over your skis - rather than relaxing your ankles. This body positioning will force your skis to flatten naturally. Once you feel your skis start to move, steer your feet so you swivel and face the opposite direction. Repeat and turn in the other direction. Try doing this with as little forward momentum as possible. It takes practice, but will give you the skills to ski virtually any terrain - trees, bumps, powder...etc. Own it! SPORTS & EXERCISE

Head Over Heels For Gymnastic Classes By Katie Appleby What comes to your mind’s eye when you think “gymnastic class”? Is it the Olympian smiling out from the cover of Sports Illustrated? Gymnastic classes benefit all kinds of people. Every year, millions of gymnasts enroll in gymnastic classes, from toddlers on small-scale equipment in parent/child classes, through teenagers learning skills on balance beam, uneven bars, floor exercise, and vault (for girls); and pommel horse, high bar, rings, parallel bars, floor exercise, and vault (for boys). Keep these factors in mind when enrolling your child in a gymnastic class:

Safety

Although your child’s first goal upon setting foot in the gym may be to flip and leap, you should investigate the gym’s safety record first. Safety includes the physical setup of the gym as well as the certifications held by coaches, such as CPR and basic first

aid. Find out if your gym’s staff has taken the USA Gymnastics Safety/Risk Management Certification course.

How Does Class Start?

Before your child does his or her first skill, warming up, stretching, and body preparation are critical to get his or her circulation moving and prepare joints for impact.

Learn About the Gym

Word of mouth is always useful, but keep in mind that each child’s experience is different. Some children like a big gym with lots of classes going on simultaneously. Others prefer a smaller, more individualized environment. Either way, an 8:1 ratio is best for children ages 4 and up. Municipal gyms are often cheaper than private facilities. Private gyms, on the other hand, may offer some amenities that municipal gyms do not. Be on the lookout, however, for a private gym that wants to accelerate your child through the ten levels of gymnastics sooner than your child is ready solely to rake in more tuition money.

Communication

You and your gymnast should have a very clear idea of what to expect your child to experience, as well as what is expected of him or her. Gymnastics is learned very incrementally; coaches and parents should help kids deal with

the patience involved in learning the sport. Although gym policies about parents watching workouts vary, the gym should never completely deny you access; if the gym does not want you to observe their coaching techniques, you should stay away.

Gym Joy!

Coaches have many responsibilities, including supervising young children in a potentially hazardous environment, motivating kids to do more than they thought themselves capable of, and fitting in the planned activities for each section (oh, and then there is the topic of managing parents, whose expectations are frequently out of touch with their child’s abilities). In the long run, however, the experience of a gymnastic class should be fun. Once a child is training competitively, the ratio of “fun” to “pure hard work” grows smaller, but for a recreational gymnast, the enjoyment of the sport should outweigh the challenges

Vault your child to fun - enroll him or her in gymnastic classes! Katie Appleby is an accomplished niche website developer and author. TRY SOME FUN TREADMILL EXERCISES!

By Christopher W Smith

If you think that you can only do limited things on a treadmill, think again. After all, with a little imagination and innovation, you can make your treadmill workout just as challenging as you would like. Here are a few suggestions for creating an intense treadmill workout. Of course, it’s always a good idea to check with a doctor before you start a new exercise program or up the intensity of your current workouts.

Be sure to warm up with some stretches before you try this technique, as with any other type of physical exercise. The best way to do a speed interval exercise is to walk or run as fast as you can for one minute. Then slow the pace down for a two-minute breather. After the two minutes are up, do another minute at full speed, and so on. Repeat this cycle five to eight times, as this is an excellent example of a good aerobic treadmill workout.

DUMBBELLS HAND WEIGHTS

CHANGING INCLINE INTERVALS

Tired of your legs doing all the work while your arms just hang there - or worse, grip the safety bars? Try raising and lowering five to ten pound hand weights as you walk along. Also, if you’re used to hanging onto the bars on your treadmill, you should start slow so that you don’t fall, and then simply increase speed as you gain confidence. By the end of a vigorous walk, you will have given your upper and lower body a good treadmill workout.

WALKING BACKWARDS

It is obviously best to do this at a slow pace and without hanging onto the bars. Walking backwards uses the muscles in your legs in a whole new way and challenges you to pay attention to your balance as well, which is incredibly important in any sort of exercise routine. After this treadmill workout, you are guaranteed to develop aches in muscles that you never knew you had; remember that this is a good thing however, and that this means that your muscles are truly getting worked out.

Again, be sure to warm up before you try this exercise. Walk as you normally would for five minutes. Then set the incline on your machine to four or five. Continue walking for another five minutes, then return the incline to zero. Repeat this cycle two times for maximum benefit.

TOES AND HEELS

Walk as you normally would for five minutes. Then slow down your speed and walk on your tiptoes for thirty seconds. Resume your normal walk for another five minutes, then slow down again and walk on your heels for thirty seconds. Repeat this cycle twice to exercise different muscles in your legs and feet. A good routine for your treadmill does not have to be bland. Make sure to vary the type of treadmill exercises that you do to keep motivated and healthy. DOG TREADMILL -

TIPS ON USING A CANINE TREADMILL By Kathryn ONeill

LOOKING FOR A DOG TREADMILL?

A doggie treadmill is a great tool on blizzard or storm days when you can’t get out. And for dogs that have weight problems, it can help them trim down and fight off other diseases that come with extra weight (diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc.). When buying a treadmill for your dog you have 2 options:

OPTION #1

BUY A REGULAR TREADMILL AND TRAIN YOUR DOG TO WALK ON IT

The advantage to this is that you can use it, too. So it can do double duty as both your treadmill and your dog’s. The disadvantage is that you need a belt long enough for your dog (I have a rottweiler and he needed the longest belt length available so he wouldn’t fall off the treadmill - 60”). You also have to make sure your dog’s nails are trimmed so he doesn’t rip up your tread belt. Dogs also drool and shed a lot, even while walking and this can affect your treadmill and even hurt the operation if too much dust and hair get under the tread belt. So make sure to clean the treadmill thoroughly every time Fido uses it.

PETS

Canine treadmills are becoming more popular as they give you some great benefits. Walking your dog on a treadmill can help drain a lot of his energy - especially on those days where you can’t get out for a leash walk. It’s also helpful for those high-energy breeds like labs or boxers.

Plus you’ve got to use a leash at first while training them to walk on a regular treadmill as they can often fall off the sides and may even injure themselves. So it takes a bit of work this way.

OPTION #2

BUY A SPECIALIZED DOG TREADMILL

Specialized canine treadmills get around many of the problems of a regular treadmill. They are built lower to the ground with side rails so your dog has less chance of hurting himself. They are also built with dogs in mind so the shedding hair and drooling doesn’t matter so much. They’re also built to accommodate the length of your dog - you can choose small, medium or large treadmills for dogs so your dog has enough belt and won’t fall off the back of the treadmill while walking. So those are two options you have to get a treadmill for your dog. As a third option, some people try to build their own dog treadmill but I wouldn’t recommend that. This is one machine you don’t want to make a mistake with as it could cause serious injury to your dog. You can find regular treadmills at many places. However doggie treadmills can be more difficult to find. The Pet Food Ingredient By Dr. Randy Wysong

Human Grade

PETS

Then there are claims about “USDA approved” ingredients, “human grade” ingredients and ingredients purchased right out of the meat counter at the grocery store. Again, at first glance - and superficiality is what marketers like to deal with - it may seem that such foods would have merit over others. But such labels only create a perception of quality. People would not consider the food pets are designed for in the wild - whole, raw prey and carrion “human grade” or “USDA approved.” Because something is not “human grade” does not mean it is not healthy or nutritious. For example, chicken viscera is not “human grade” but carries more nutritional value than a clean white chicken breast. Americans think that chicken feet would not be fit for human consumption but many far eastern countries relish them. On the other hand, “human grade” beef steaks fed to pets could cause serious nutritional imbalances and disease if fed exclusively. Pet foods that create the superficial perception of quality (USDA, human grade, etc.) with the intent of getting pet owners to feed a particular food exclusively is not what health is about.

Pet Nutrition Is Serious Health Science

Pet nutrition is not about marketing and who can make the most money quickly. Unfortunately an aspiring pet food mogul off the street can go to any number of private label manufacturers and have a new brand made. These manufacturers have many stock formulas that can be slightly modified to match the current market trend. Voilà! A new pet food wonder brand is created. Pet foods are about pet nutrition, and nutrition is a serious health matter. There is an implied ethic in going to market with products that can so seriously impact health. But the ethic is by and large absent in the pet food industry. Starting with the 100% claim and on to all the fad driven brands that glut the shelves, health is not being served. Nobody other than our organization is teaching people the principles I am discussing here. Instead, companies headed

by people with no real technical, nutritional, food processing or health skills put themselves out to the public as serious about health ... because that is what the public wants to hear and what sells. Never mind whether producers really understand or can implement healthy principles. The façade sells and selling is the game. Ingredients are important, true, but not less important than the expertise and principles of the producer who is choosing them, preparing, storing, processing and packaging them. Consumers place a lot of trust that nondescript processed nuggets are what consumers are being led to believe they are. Many a slip can occur between the cup and the lip. There are many slips that can occur between the cup of commercial claims and what ends up in the lips of the pet food bowl.

Are By-Products Evil?

Consumer Blame

Wysong is a former veterinary clinician and surgeon, college instructor in human anatomy, physiology and the origin of life, inventor of numerous medical, surgical, nutritional, athletic and fitness products and devices, research director for the present company by his name and founder of the philanthropic Wysong Institute. The consumer is not without guilt in this unfortunate - steady diet of processed pet food - approach to pet feeding. They want everything easy and inexpensive. They don’t want to learn or have to expend too much effort, and they want something simple to base decisions on like: “corn, wheat and soy are evil,” or “USDA approved,” or “human grade” or “organic is good.” They also want something for nothing and think they can get it in a pet food. People want prime choice meats, organic and fresh foods all wrapped up tidy in an easy open, easy pour package, hopefully for 50 cents a pound. They may even pay $1 or a little more if the producer can convince them about how spectacular their product is or how much cancer their pet will get if they choose another brand.

In the processing of human foods there are thousands of tons of by-products that cannot be readily sold to humans. Does that make them useless or even inferior? No. Such by-products could include trimmings, viscera, organs, bones, gristle and anything else that humans do not desire. Should these perfectly nutritious items be buried in a landfill? As I mentioned above, while Earth’s resources continue to decline and people starve around the globe, should we feed our pets only “human grade” foods and let perfectly edible - and sometimes even more nutritious - by-products go to waste? How is that conscionable or justifiable for either the consumer or the producer?

There are other electronic bark control methods. If a dog is well behaved but barks in certain spots (like at a neighbor’s fence), there are bark control units that can be hung in trees or on fence posts. If they detect dog barking they’ll emit a high pitch ultrasonic sound that humans cannot hear, but that is unpleasant to dogs.

So how do you get one of these coveted jobs? First, decide on the mountain you want to work at. Next, contact Human Resources before the season, online or in person. Or try talking to a ski instructor; you’ll get all the information you need and more. Once you contact your resort of choice, you might have to have an interview, which means you’ll ski around the mountain and chat on a chairlift with the person responsible for hiring. Most resorts do not require any experience and will train you in what you need to know, making you both a better teacher and a better skier in the process.

SKI INSTRUCTOR JOBS –

TURNING A PASSION FOR SKIING INTO PAID WORK

C

onfucius said it best, “Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life.” This is a motto that we should all live by, becaeuse enjoying life is what it is all about. When you think about your job, do you dread it? Or do you go to sleep at night excited about work? If you want a job that will make you smile, then consider becoming a ski instructor. Getting a job as a ski instructor is not hard. You don’t have to be the world’s best skier. In fact, the most important thing is to be personable and be able to teach. When it comes to getting a ski instructor job, a friendly intermediate skier from Kansas is often a far better instructor than a picture perfect expert skiing Ivy Leaguer with no personality. Anybody at any age can be a ski instructor. Professional ski instructors come back year after year and love their career. But even if it’s not your career, it is just as satisfying to be a weekend instructor teaching for extra income or a college kid working holidays to earn a free pass.

When it comes to ski jobs, ski instructors are at the top of the pay scale. Many people come to resorts to shovel snow or work as a lift operator. They often barely make enough money to eat. Though ski instructors are not exactly pulling in a doctor’s salary, they are doing quite well compared to their ski bum brethren. Plus every once in awhile, a satisfied “student” will shake you hand and you’ll find a tip - helping you with your next tank of gas or your next night on the town. Some ski instructors even make enough in one season to take the entire summer off !

SPORTS & EXERCISE

If a country has a ski resort, they also have a ski instructor association, like PSIA, BASI, or CSIA. Being a certified ski instructor will usually increase your pay rate and boost your chance of being hired. If you want to have a certification on your resume before you apply, there are several instructor certification courses you can find by searching Google.

So what does a ski instructor’s job consist of ? Skiing everyday - up to 150 days a season! Your “work” will always be within your skiing limits, and everyday can be different. Friday might be spent hucking cliffs, getting lost in bottomless powder, or carving a fresh groomer with another expert skier. Saturday you could be teaching a group of 5-year-olds how to stop, but also how to make snowballs. Sunday you might sip hot chocolate at the lodge and do a couple of runs with your private client. Monday you could teach in the half pipe. Tuesday might be spent helping a student learn to stand up without any help. Then, Wednesday and Thursday are your days off and you’ll do the same thing you did at “work” on Friday. As a ski instructor, you’re guaranteed to have a smile on your face and you’ll be doing what you love – skiing!

So if you love skiing and are looking for a laid back job that keeps you out of a cubicle, give ski instructing a try. People will be green with envy, when you tell them that you are a ski instructor. And that on your days off, you do the same thing you do at “work,” but you just don’t wear your uniform! Not many people can say that. Kevin Lutgarten is an author for JobMonkey.com, a website for adventurous job seekers. The website features some of the coolest jobs on earth, including Ski Jobs wwwjobmonkey.com/ski/index.html, Summer Camp Jobs, International Volunteering opportunities, and Alaska Fisheries summer jobs. JobMonkey is free and has an active job board as well as hundreds of pages of free content. Find out more about Kevin at www.jobmonkey.com/ski/html/instructor_training.html

It is estimated that 10 to 12 percent of the US population visit ski resorts each year. Of those enthusiasts, 75% are skiers. This includes adults, children, teens, and adaptive skiers. And they want both group lessons and private lessons. But what is really important is that at every resort - from Vail, CO to Beech Mountain, NC - ski instructors are in demand. Often during the busy seasons, resorts can’t find enough ski instructors! JANUARY 2011

we get begins to decline at around age 6 for most. Yes, 1st grade is the prelude to the sedentary 6-8 hour workday. Add in homework, video games, and television and the amount of sedentary time increases. The decreases in physical activity continue with our increase in age. Exercise, whether for fitness or sport/competition can have many positive effects on your life regardless of age or level of participation. Regular exercise may increase confidence, energy, and memory. Exercise can also assist in creating a positive body image, increasing work efficiency, and improving academic performance. Research shows that regular exercise decreases absenteeism at work and also decreases anxiety, hostility, depression, tension, and anger. How does it work? First, exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which gives the brain more “food.” A change also happens to the chemicals in the brain where neurotransmitters release feel good chemicals such as serotonin, endorphins, and norepinephrine. This also creates a reduction in

e’ve been hearing about the president mixing it up on the basketball court. George W. Bush would drag his security guards out on gnarly mountain bike rides. The jogging habits of past presidents make national news (let’s not forget those flattering photos of Bill Clinton in his jogging shorts). Why would important and busy people like our presidents take time out of their day to participate in sport and fitness activities? What is significant about this?

ANSWER:

Research shows that exercise and physical fitness are associated with better mental health and overall well being. When we feel good we do better in our jobs, create healthier relationships, and improve our overall day-to-day performance. Exercise is also associated with stress reduction, decreased depression, and decreased anxiety. The amount of physical activity

muscle tension thereby promoting a more relaxed state on a daily basis. We can all come up with many different reasons and/or excuses for not exercising or participating in sport. Here are some of the most common: Perceived lack of time Lack of energy Lack of motivation Not feeling in good enough shape to start I’m too old for this stuff Perceived lack of time: If you really look at your day-to-day activities, the problem more likely lies in prioritizing. People find time to watch television, read, and hang out. Setting goals and prioritizing fitness can become a part of your daily routine. Lack of energy: Fatigue is often more mental than physical. Fatigue can be the product of stress and anxiety. Even just taking a brisk walk has been shown to relieve tension and stress and actually be energizing. Lack of motivation: It takes commitment and prioritizing to be able to take 30 minutes of your day to engage in some form of fitness activity. An important motivator to keep in mind initially is all of the benefits you can gain from exercise, one being an increase in motivation! Join a team or group. The social experience can also increase the desire for participation. It comes down to making the commitment to get started. The rest will follow. Not feeling in good enough shape to start: Getting in better physical condition is the purpose! Fitness can start with a walk around the block. From there one can slowly increase until maybe it is a jog around the block, then 2 blocks, etc. I’m too old for this stuff: Being too old has become an excuse of

the past. There are masters and seniors running groups, bike groups, sports teams, and even senior Olympic Games. The senior games actually consist of many different sporting events such as basketball, bowling, tennis, cycling and mountain biking, racquetball, road racing, softball, swimming, triathlon, volleyball, lawn bowls, square dance, table tennis and track and field. Divisions range from over 50 yrs young to over 70 years young. There are even people who start running in their 60’s only to do their first marathon at 70. Clearly it is never too late. It is New Year’s resolution time. Start out with setting some short term goals. Join an established group or find people to join you. If you are having difficulty motivating, getting started, and/or setting goals for yourself, counseling can help by first identifying and then working to remove psychological barriers to participation.
